Formatting doesn't remove the Vista boot manager. You'll either need to repartition or use the XP CD to boot up to the recovery console and then do the fixmbr, fixpart, fixboot commands. Jim

I think I'd be tempted to go into safe mode and re-install SP2 to see if the client computer regains stability - after all you'll be no worse off if it doesnt work. Then we can work at fixing the connection-sharing issues. Has the IP address of the computer changed? I seem to remember that the "basic" connection sharing requires a IP of 192.168.0.1 - at least it always used to require this. Safe mode, reinstall SP2 and subsequenct fixes, then report back. Jim

Not sure what you mean. If the copy of windows shows as being registered to Owner you need to update the text in your winnt.sif file. If you've ended up with a folder called Owner in your Documents and Settings folder then you must have somehow logged as Owner. WHen I slipstream-install I just end up with the normal stuff - Administrator, Default User, All Users etc. If this doesn't help then I think perhaps you need to clarify your question. Jim

Hi Synamite, It's a bugger isn't it! I was dreading this happening. I've opted to scrub the system, reinstall a slipstreamed SP1, and then apply all the pre-SP2 hotfixes from Windows Update. It's not ideal, as the PC is now "locked" to a pre-SP2 state, but I don't see any alternative. If SP2 didn't break systems then we'd be okay - SP1 never broke anything! Best of luck! Jim

Hi all, just a general note. My Dad's install of SP2 failed miserably. Even a scratch/reinstall failed miserably. Symptoms - freeze during boot. A safe-boot boot shows the infamous "mup.sys" as the last entry. Board - Asus P4P8 Deluxe. Same with my uncle. Identical board, identical problem. In both cases, flashing to the latest BIOS solved the problem. And why am I writing this posting? Because I'm currently pulling my hair out with a friend's Time Computers ( ) system. Same problem, but no BIOS to download. £1/min for technical support - I don't think so! Sigh....slipstreamed SP1 currently going on. I'll then apply all the hotfixes (via my SuS laptop), and then disable Automatic Updates. So....the moral? There's something seriously stuffed in SP2. BIOS updates seem to solve the problem, but if you cannot get a later BIOS, it's just tough! Jim

Hi Screemer, There's no updates on the Mfr website (Nevidia has a unified driver), and I don't remember seeing a checkbox re: modes. The "List all modes" option only lists up to the 969 res. I'll check nvidia again to be sure. Jim

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop with the "GeForce2 440 Go" display. When I installed SP2 the resolution changed from 1024x768 to 969x768, and now I cannot go higher than 969x768 (or 800x600). I've now done a full reinstall with slipstreamed SP2. Same problem. I've also installed the latest NVidia drivers. Same problem. Seems like it affects this card - others found the same problem in the beta (see here) Can anyone suggest a workaround/solution? It's a pain having a big black band on the right hand side of the screen! Jim

Slipstreamed XP Pro SP2, brand new clean install from a winnt.sif file Whenever I shutdown I get a brief glimpse of The title of the dialog is UsrPrbDa.exe. Anyone know what could be causing this? I have a US Robotics modem, and this file shows up in the driver file-list for the modem. But it's a signed Microsoft driver, and Windows Update shows no new version available. Any ideas? I've just had a go at that, and have read the MS docs. The problem I have now is that you need to re-sign the modified file (netwf.in_). But I can't find any way of doing that! The alternative is to install it and then copy across the modified file, but I'd rather it installed the SP with the modified file already in place. Any ideas? Jim

Hi all, I look after a remote site running 20 XP desktops. I administer the server (2000 SBS) via Remote Desktop, and then access the PCs via VNC. If I install XP SP2 via VNC, when the machine restarts will I be unable to reconnect via VNC (port 5800/5900) due to the firewall? If so, is there any way around this? Obviously I have Remote Registry access and can start/stop services. I'm also running Software Update Services, but I think I'll have the same problem. All advice welcome! Jim

Scenario: Home PC running Windows XP Pro connected to the internet via 56K dialup (rural Britain - no b/b available). Full admin rights. Work PC running Windows 2000 Pro connected to the internet via dual 2Mb lines. No admin rights. Is there any way at all for me to download the XP Windows Update files at work, and then take them on CD-R to my home PC? Windows Update (v4.windowsupdate.com) tries to be smart and says I don't have admin rights and can't install the fixes, which is correct. However, it stupidly denies access to the Windows Update Catalog link, so I can't manually download them. If I can obtain the Windows Update Q numbers required, can anyone point out links to files, or mirror sites, or something like that so that I can install them manually? Many thanks, Jim

The purpose of this exercise is not to limit the sites that the kids can see, but to limit the phone bills! 40% of the UK cannot access Broadband, and as such we have to pay for our internet calls. In XP Pro is there an easy way to prevent the kids surfing the web? There are four users on the PC, each with a separate account. Two people (Admins) need to be able to access the web (dialup) but we want to prevent the kids (users) from getting Internet access. We don't want third-party software (if possible), and we don't want to rely on things like hiding icons. Can anyone suggest a solution? Many thanks Jim Willsher

Sure. I have XP installed on two 10K SCSI drives with no problem.

It runs fine.However, I think you need SQL Server 2000 PERSONAL, as opposed to STANDARD or ENTERPRISE. I stand to be corrected, but I believe this is the case. I'm using SQL Server Personal on my PC. No real differrences btween it and standard. Jim

Not sure what you mean. You can manipulate the file extensions how you wish (e.g. remove, change to fixed etc.). If a user has elected to not show file extensions then it doesn't matter, as the software will still show extensions. Does this help? If not, email me and I'll try to help. Jim

Bulk Rename Utility is a small utility I wrote which allows you to rename multiple files and folders using flexible renaming criteria. Have you chosen to enable scripts? Without this ticked it won't run any code. The attachment you posted appears to contain valid ASP code. Also, within IE, untick the option sayng "how friendly HTTP error messages", then you should see a better error message. HTH, Jim
