  1. Red herring.... Windows was telling me in a polite, but completely useless manner, that one of my little-used IDE drives was on the way out. I have 3 SCSIs and one IDE, which I use for temporary ISO images etc. Anyway, the IDE disk has breathed its last. Unplug the disk and - bingo - explorer is working again. Jim
  2. False alarm. Problem still there. Aaaaarrrgrgggghhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!
  3. Thank you, and well done! That is exactly what I needed - problem resolved. Thanks again, Jim
  4. I have a P3 PC (700Mhz) PC with 768Mb SDRAM and plenty of SCSI160 disk. I have a clean install of Windows XP Pro with SP1. I have this on two separate hard drives, i.e. two completely independent copies of XP. Very very frequently, if I use the windows key and E to launch explorer, the shell list is displayed but My Computer is not expanded. No amount of effort will expand this, and I can never see my drives. Task Manager shows "My Computer" as Not Responding. All I can do is end the My Computer task, or alternatively end the Explorer process. If I do a Start, Run then type "Explorer C:\" it works okay. I can recreate this on both partitions. This never used to happen with XP Pro. It is only since I installed XP Pro with SP1. Has anyone seen this before, or does anypne have any suggestions? I have already done the "REGSVR32 /u zipfldr.dll" (and CAB) to prevents scanning of ZIP files. This is driving me insane! Many thanks. Jim
  5. Does anybody have any suggestions for sucking the maximum performance out of my discs? I have the following config : PIII 700 768Mb SDRAM Adaptec 29160 card with 2xQuantum Atlas 10K 9Gb 1xQuantum Atlas 10K II 9Gb XP Pro is installed to C:, ad my page file is split across D: and E: However, is there anything more I can do to boost the throughput - volumes, stripe sets, anything? Thanks, Jim
