  1. I have been also wondering about whether the folders get added using that method...! Anyone tried it yet? If no one answers this question, I will run my next Unattended test tomorrow on VirtualPC, but it takes me about 2 hours... It crawls along, even though I have 1 GB of RAM Memory... If anyone knows of good tweaks that will allow VirtualPC 2004 to run faster on these tests, please let me know! Especially annoying, is that VirtualPC slows down almost completely when using the computer to surf the web, or do anything else at all that does not keep the VirtualPC Window active...
  2. j4ever, Thanks for reply! Just a question... you said: What is MCE2005?EDIT: Found out on my own...! Here's what Media Center Edition 2005 is all about: (From http://www.xpmce.com/forum/ftopic84393.html)
  3. I own Nero 6 Ultra Edition. The latest Nero version, which is compatible with XP SP2, was hanging during my install. I finally figured what the problem was. "Nero 6.3.1.20" itself installs fine silently, as does "InCD 4.3.0.3". However, "Nero Vision Express 2.1.2.18" was causing the installation to hang because it prompts for desired file associations for "Nero Showtime", and with silent and no GUI, it hangs. Allowing GUI, you have to check or uncheck the file association boxes desired. My question, actually, is this: Do I really need what Nero calls "Update Package 2" and "Update Package 4"? UP2 = NeroVision Express 2, Nero Recode 2, Nero ShowTime UP4 = NeroMix If all I need is UP1 and UP3, then that would help me make my Unattended truly silent and prompt free. But maybe some shared files are installed by UP2 or UP4? UP1 = Nero StartSmart, Nero Express 6, Nero Cover Designer, Nero SoundTrax, Nero Image Drive, Nero Burning ROM 6, Nero BackItUp, Nero Wave Editor, Nero Toolkit UP3 = InCD Thanks for any help...!
  4. swgreed, Hey, so that was your old post that helped me out...! Just a question, regarding what you just said: Did you mean that now WMP10 already comes with all the codecs, or did you mean that with your updated codecs post, on that link, we now have the right codecs to add to our unattended install?
  5. Based on some great information from this forum, I had been installing codecs for WMP9 in my Unattended installs. This involves copying codec files to the System32 folder, and adding registry entries... I have now included this same procedure in my WMP10 Unattended CDs. However, lately I have been reading some confusing comments regarding WMP10, whereby some claim it already comes with all the necessary codecs... Is this really the case? These are the codecs in question: Here's the Registry entries: Registry Codec File So, codecs, or no codecs? Or perhaps new codecs?
  6. I have this problem too in XP SP2. However, Office 2003 installs fine in SP1.
  7. Using XP SP2 Unattended install, I noticed this same problem. However, if you leave "Access" out of the administrative install options, it seems to install fine. I hope this problem does get addressed, so that we can install Access as well.
  8. Alanoll, Thanks for that info...! Very useful. Based on that, I eliminated those Media Center and Tablet PC directories from my Unattended CD. (I kept them on my DVD version, of course)
  9. dirtyepic, Thanks for the info... True regarding MM2, I haven't used it yet either...! Still, was curious, and intend to check it out in the future. What's the deal though with DNF 1.1? Why does it not also install by default? Is there a way to enable its installation from "\cmpnents\netfx\i386\netfx.cab"? B)
  10. Ok, it seems from what I have read elsewhere that: 1. You will still need to install DotNetFramework 1.1 However, the strange thing is that there is a DNF cab file in the SP2 Unattended folder: Is this one DNF 1.1, and if so, why doesn't it get installed? 2. Apparently, MDAC 2.8 does not need installing, as MDAC 2.81 is supposed to be part of the SP2 install, thus replacing our previous MDAC unattended install and the hotfix patch. 3. Movie Maker 2: no info yet. I'll edit this once I complete my first successful Unattended SP2 install, which is in progress, as I write this. 4. Haven't seen anything regarding old registry tweaks not working. However, I think it is logical to assume some won't, and will need new tweak settings.
  11. Is it just my imagination, or are people rather reluctant to help these days? Anyway, I found the answer to this problem after trying different things. It seems the solution was very simple. Should anyone else encounter this problem, the solution is as follows: For some odd reason, the folder was missing the file "CONTROLS.MAN". Therefore, I copied that file from my previous, old, SP1 Unattended CD, into that folder. It came from the same folder structure. I am writing this as Microsoft VirtualPC 2004 is finishing the install, so in truth I haven't tested yet to see if XP Pro SP2 is installed without any problems at all. But all seems to be progressing fine in the install...
  12. I created my Windows XP Pro Unattended CD following all tips on this web site, e.g. I used the original, unmodified XP CD as the source to slipstream SP2 into. I used nLite 0.98.7 to slipstream SP2. I just tested using Microsoft VirtualPC 2004, but got this fatal error at T39: After pressing OK, this is the log file that came up: And this is my winnt.sif file: Any suggestions on what may have gone wrong?
  13. The following questions are for Windows XP Pro: I.- Does SP2 include the following, or do they have to be added to Unattended? 1.- DotNetFramework 1.1 2.- Movie Maker 2 3.- MDAC 2.8 (plus Q832483.exe hotfix). II.- Will most SP1 registry tweaks work alright in SP2?
  14. jrzycrim, Very Useful! Thanks for your help! Can't wait to try it...!
  15. Somewhat related question... In my unattended setup, certain customized shortcuts get placed on my Desktop. However, I would like to arrange some on the left side of the screen, and some on the right... For example, it could be my games on the right side. And, I am not interested in having them displayed in alphabetical order, or any other sorting routine, other than my owm customized placements. Is there a way to automate the placement of these shortcuts? I tried the method of taking a snapshot of the registry, but it didn't work for me... Thanks...!
  16. Yong, You could rename it "bliss1.bmp", or "blisss.bmp". People should figure it out then, plus you get a preview window when looking at Wallpapers. I don't mean this in a mean way, but is it just me, or does anyone else out here also think that perhaps bliss.bmp is probably the ugliest of all the Wallpapers? I actually chose a different Wallpaper that I actually liked, as a default for my Unattended CD. And that better Wallpaper was renamed to bliss.bm_, thus saving me the agravation of finding out where to change any settings for a different name to be loaded. Well, Yong, good luck, I hope you get it all the way you want it. The truth is, there's nothing like the feeling of getting it all working perfectly, as your heart desires. And it took me about a year to reach that level of satisfaction...! I never quite got Norton Antivirus as Unattended as I would like, but I can live with that. I just have to go through the NAV registration screens after the whole Unattended completes, a bit of a nuisance, but I am not good enough to automate this with a script file, biggest problem being different speeds, or timing, on my different computers... Also, NAV can mistake .JS script files for Viruses (or an attempt to install a virus). Ooops! Bit of a ramble. Sorry...
  17. Did you try just renaming "bliss.jp_ "and/or "bliss.bm_"? Change it to something like "hills.bm_", that way I believe it will not assign a wallpaper to the Desktop. Or does it do so anyway? If it works, people can still have that Wallpaper available, it's just that they will choose it by its new name...

  19. I find MS Virtual PC 2004 extremely useful, but agonizingly slow. Does anyone have any recommendations to improve on the speed of my testing? My computer has 1 full Gig of RAM memory, 2.4 GHz P4, and nVidia GeForce 3 Ti 500 (Dell Dimension 8100) I have tried allocating 128, 256, and 512 MB of virtual RAM memory to Virtual PC, with no noticeable speed improvements... Is there something else I need to look at? Example: a DVD Unnattended install test will take me over 3 hours on Virtual PC, vs only 55-70 minutes on an actual computer, with even a P3 processor...!
  20. The problem with placing a temp Drivers folder on the hard drive is the extra time involved in copying the files over, when only some will be recognized and used for each computer model. Additional time is spent deleting the temp Drivers folder at the end as well. I have opted for an Unattended DVD solution, and therefore have placed many different Graphics, Modem, and Audio drivers in my Drivers folder. It adds about 10-15 minutes to the Unnattended install to include them (still better than adding them later manually). The very best solution, would be if there was some way to: 1. Not place a temp Drivers folder on Hard Drive, via "XPDVD\$OEM$\$1\Drivers" 2. Direct winnt.sif to look for drivers on driver folder on DVD, instead of using "Drivers\Nvidia;Drivers\NvidiaGo;etc..." Is there such a solution?
  21. AaronXP, You are right. Seems my browser did not refresh from previous visit. At least that's the only explanation I can think off...! Thanks!
  22. AaronXP said: I too don't see where it is mentioned. I just looked under both Q828028 and KB835732 (Q835732), but both say "Security Update Replacement: None".
  23. Did you mean to spell your reg file like this? Or, did you miss-spell it, and it should be: "registerwinzip.reg"?
