  1. yeah i am cusrious about this as well. I am using a DSL connection and wondered if I could benefit from this broadband tweak.
  2. I got it to work also. Looks like my first *.theme file was a bit too simple. Thanx gosh!
  3. Thanx guys, Marztabators code worked just fine plus it came with the command line for drives, not just folders. I didn't explicity test it but it looks like the missing "" was the fault. The code in my first post was a cut/paste from DaveXP's Registry Hacks website. Maybe we should tell him... So any ideas on the small icons fpr explorer?
  4. The comand line reg tweak for every folder... ;Add Open Command Window Here to right click menu [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\cmd] @="Open Command Window Here" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\cmd\command] @="cmd.exe /k \"cd %L\ ...doesn't work. It installs fine but if one tries to use it the following error appears: "C:\Program Files This File does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel." How can this be fixed? Also... ;Use Small Icons in Windows Explorer [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer] "SmallIcons"="yes" ...this does not work. It simply has no effect on the explorer icons (they still appear large). Any ideas?
  5. I've tested the batch file and the result is positive. I've decided NOT to remove :sr and :pchealth. when copying files setup coplains about the following files missing but continues anyhow: Bxxx.xxx (hit escape before i got the name) MSTASK.HLP SNIFFPOL.DLL SSTUB.DLL TSHOOT.DLL MNMDD.SYS gui setup does not complain. RESULT: another 20 Megs off the cd
  6. So it wouldn't be possible to somehow automate the klicking on the :styles file and choosing the color scheme?
  7. I want to install a custom theme and color selection as my default theme. The patched UXtheme is slipstreamed and works fine. As the theme I chose WindowsMAXthin http://www.themexp.org/view_info.php?id=15577 It comes in many color combinations and I want to choose Orange2. First problem: the theme does not come with a *.theme file. Only an *.msstyles is included. I thought it wouldn't be a problem to write my own *.theme file, so i took another one, compared it and wrote my own. WindowsMAXthin.theme [Theme] [VisualStyles] Path=%WinDir%\resources\Themes\WindowsMAXThin\WindowsMAXThin.msstyles ColorStyle=Orange2 Size=NormalSize In my winnt.sif I use this: [Shell] CustomDefaultThemeFile="%SYSTEMDRIVE%\Windows\Resources\Themes\WindowsMAXthin.theme" DefaultStartPanelOff=No DefaultThemesOff=No The theme is copied over just fine but all I get is an error saying the theme couldn't be used/activated etc. because some files are missing. Right after that I proceed to activating the theme by hand and it works just fine. I've also checked the theme for the famous %windir%resources error but it didn't help either. HELP!
  8. gosh, forgive me for saying this but one can cut down the size of the i386 folder to 340 megs without going through the lengthy prcedure you are describing. the LANG folder can be safely deleted among other things for example. some cab files can be removed also by taking your INF method a step further (test results on this soon). scancurban mentioned a method of creating silent rar sfx archives for themes and other apps to cut down the total size of the cd.
  9. i got office on my CD without delete them files in the above post! yeah I know it is possible. but I would like to have a winxp cd of 250 megs. I know someone has cut xp down to 100 meg (mentioned in some other thread).
  10. very cool. but in order to save space on the install cd, which corresponding cab files can be deleted? i would love to cut down the size of the unattended xp cd to about 250 megs as it would then fit on a 8cm cd-rom or allow office to sit on the same 700meg cd. xp and office do fit on one cd now already but it has to be a 870 meg one. looking at the original INFs i have found references to thefollowing files: moviemk.exe wmmres.dll wmmutil.dll wmmfilt.dll sample.asf msmsgs.exe msgsc.dll msgslang.dll online.wav newemail.wav newalert.wav type.wav logowin.gif logo.gif lvback.gif msmsgsin.exe mailtmpl.txt and loads more. they are all listed in the [install App] section in the INF files. is it safe to delete those?
  11. gosh, i extracted sp1 but I couldn't find testroot.cer. COuld you elaborate further on the issue of creating a certificate that would meet my above requirements please.
  12. I've recently come across a reg tweak on how to remove the desktop branding in windows xp (i believe this was for beta versions displaying the version number and an evaluation message) EDIT: "For testing purposes only" Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SystemCertificates\CA\Certificates\FEE449EE0E3965A5246F000E87FDE2A065FD89D4] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SystemCertificates\ROOT\Certificates\2BD63D28D7BCD0E251195AEB519243C13142EBC3] My question is now: How can one ADD desktop branding. I don't want to use this to display the version or testing message but rather a message saying "Property of XY Corp." How can the message be edited?
  13. Yes it does indeed work! As stated above cmdlines is executed at the 13 minute mark (one can see it very briefly). I am now happily auto-logged in!
  14. Thanx valkyre. I will try that but I don't think it will work because it asks me to logon BEFORE cmdlines.txt is executed...
  15. Aaron, sorry to bring up this topic again but it doesn't work. The user/internet/register dislogs are successfully skipped now BUT I am then prompted to logon. And that is BEFORE the registry tweaks & hotfixes are installed so I don't think the autologon will work. How can I fix this? Would installing WITHOUT an admin password solve this issue? BTW: How does one change the admin password afterwards? User config?
  16. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion] "ProgramFilesDir"="D:\\Program Files" there ya go...
  17. I came across the option to set/randomly gererate the computer name the other day. On my unattended CD I used to leave this option to auto-generate. However I have a collection of computer names as a text file that I would like XP to randomly choose one from during install. How could this be done?
  18. Here's one feature in MS Word that really annoys me since I've first used it. I am designing a template for a business letter. Besides many other things I want it to include the (current) date. With the insert -> time & date -> update automatically option I always get the current date but also the following problem: When a letter is created form the template, saved, printed and sent it includes the date it was created (current). However, when one needs to refer back to the letter a few months after it was sent, the document is opened and contains the current! date, not the date it was created. How can I auto-insert the date on which a document was created from a template so it doesn't change when the document is edited again?
  19. thanx for all the help! slipstick is one very cool site too! i found that outlook only stores contacts and messages in outlook.pst. account data is stored in the registry. I've found a proggy called Outback Plus which allows backing up all settings in outlook (including accounts). It already supports Outlook 2003 as well and allows some IE settings to be backed up also. http://www.ajsystems.com/obp4.html
  20. I'M re-installing XP on a machine and since I am too lazy to enter all the account details by hand again I wanted to know where Outlook 2002 stores them? aah wrong forum..sorry
  21. Ahh thanx Aaron. I knew I missed something... And thanx for the welcome. MSFN is amazing!
  22. Hi all! I have been stunned by the MSFN guide to make a self-installing all tweaked out XP-CD because I have always wanted something quite like that. I have made a couple of those CDs and it keeps on evolving nicely. However, I still get the welcome-movie, user creation/checking internet ability/register with microsoft screens in between windows install and the cmd file start. How can I bypass this?
  23. oh yeah, I should have thought of that! thank you!
  24. I am trying - unsuccessfully - to copy something over to all users desktop. Why doesn't this work? echo Desktop Stuff copy %systemdrive%\install\desktop\*.* %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Desktop\ echo.
