    MicrowinX Poll

Voted "Some From All Of The Above" All I want from an mini XP system is to run on a 455hz machine, allow windows shares and azureus meaning also java.
  3. Intresting question that is normally asked around exploiting If im wrong and you get no luck I know of an exploit that uses a built in account for one off programs but isnt usable. A better way uses the flawed AT command. It runs as a service so anything run from it runs as "NT_AUTHORITY/System" unless you us /u -------------------------- read above for the first howto must have been typing, anyway both end up using "NT_AUTHORITY/System" --------------------------
  4. Following the setup program ive posted on msfn I want to know how to change a service startup programmatically. On my games computer I disable just about everything but want this to be optional at install. Title Edited - Please follow new posting rules from now on. --Zxian
  5. Not sure if I fully understood the questions but:- When buying a new PC ive not seen any shipped with XP Pro (not unless you pay extra) they all come with Home. Maybe the people your trying to fix dont have Pro? which is why there key doesnt work with your CD?
  6. Any chance in english? bedankt "Thank(ed) you" German - English convertion only worked out the last word
  7. Im writing to try and allow lots of user control. This will mean you wont need 3rd party products to customize. Ive writing a couple of scripts one which will be used during install (first post) the other im working on to create the imput files needed for customization, a nice gui. @Frechdax3000 Thanks for your input upto now but please dont guess what or how im writting my program. From all the screen shots your posted you didnt use or want user control other than buttons. If you want other to rate or to advertise your programs any further please create your own thread. Im sure you understand as your post has already confused others.
  8. Thanks for the comments. @Frechdax3000 Seems like in on the right lines!!! This too used indigo rose's studio. @muiz All the buttons and background are images which could quickly be changed. For example the background is a jpeg in Source\dat01\ap6.dat
  9. Your question is asking too much Whats the difference between apple and brick Ones good for cooking the others good for making homes. Both are good for what they are used for but some arsehole will always favour one over the other. I hate the ethos of saying blindly xyz is better than abc. Sorry if this offends but you will get over it with age. The best reply to your question is that Windows was written for the mass home market, linux wasnt. - Three out of three large corporations (Philips, Atos & EDS) ive worked with banned linux from the network via its security police. - Both Linux and XP can be tweaked and bloated or cut down to a core. - For a usable (as you know it) home system on a P2 455 - Gentoo used 120Mb, WinXP 190mb. - From experience both systems update as much as each other but linux will normally be updated quicker.
  10. Im writing a script thats turned into something bigger that others might find helpful. I have several computers that WinXP is a standard unattended install but the extra's change. This is where this program comes into use. This is a pre release that doesnt do the final installs but gives you a good idea In the final release im adding ini files for all options (description, install file & options) Download Please give feed back and if this is helpfull to anyone else Just seen wpi but feed back would still be good
  11. My god I doubt I would ever have thought the graphics driver could shag up something that looked like a codec problem. I was using a guru3d forceware 77.72 driver for a nVidia 6800GT card Your link to 81.85 driver didnt like something leaving me in a 640 x 4colour screen. I think that driver is for a 64bit setup. Went back to guru3d and grabbed 79.11 http://194.71.11.70/pub/games/PC/guru3d/nv...ru3D.com%5D.exe (link taken for a europe download) Worked like a charm Thank you
  12. I believe this is from an uninstall that does do its job properly Blanking the regkey instead of deleting it Ive noticed it once, just delete it as it doesn’t correspond to any problem
  13. Ive never had a codec problem before but always relied on codec packs to do the work for me. Just been testing an unattended rebuild that worked without a problem. Then came the time I wanted to watch a movie (xvid)!!! After running the full klite codec pack and using windows media player. The picture is washed out and a little corrupted aka unwatchable. So I thought it could have been the pack, so uninstalled and installed a pack I used to use (Gordian.Knot.Codec.Pack.1.9) but the exact same problem. Gspot says I have the xvid codec installed File properties agree the codec is xvid Mplayer properties codec said XviD MPEG-4 Video Decoder And this is what I don’t understand If I boot the computer into safe mode the movies play without problem Ive tried other players, mplayer 6.4 & vlc both with no change HELP this is driving me crazy
  14. thanks Yurek3, must have been typing when you replied
  15. Posted a bit to quickly Think ive found whats needed REG ADD %KEY%\029 /V 4 /D "%XPCD%\install\7Zip.exe /S" /f
  16. Oddly I cant install 7zip unattended. It always asks for its install directory. This is whats already in my RunOnceEx REG ADD %KEY%\029 /V 4 /D "%XPCD%\install\7Zip.exe -y /q /r:n" /f I would like to keep away from autoit or other external methods and stick with the runonceex & $oem$ structure.
  17. Thanks for the extra info, shame you cant use the same methods but note taken about winiso.
  18. Im at pressent unable to try myself while being away from home so:- Ive got my UACD source setup so that the OEM directory uses NTFS hardlinks to save time and space. Now im looking at making a multi boot cd I would like to use this on CD. I know UltraISO has an option called optimize but I want more control. Can any ISO format handle something like the NTFS hardlink? and if so what utils will be needed.
  19. Every company ive worked for ive not seen this done. The normal is to have the source on network to deploy and ease install and upgrades also to use "Install on first use". Good luck, id also be intrested for small sites.
  20. If you think how compression works decompression shouldnt take anywhere near as long but after winrk finishes i'll test and also add more infomation for each prog. Normally I would completely agree but think of it more like this. 30Mb is the difference between using NERO or Windows built in cd burner. DreamweaverMX or Notepad how about Symantec Norton AV or the luck of the gods.
  21. Personally ive never seen winrar compress better than 7zip. When you have limited size like a CD you need compression over ease. This is why ive tried different programs, but for sure rar & zip are the fastest and more user friendly.
  22. Ive been playing around trying to squeeze ever meg from a standard Full Office install without removing files by means of archiving. Thought this could be helpful to others to know roughly what could be achieved. The archiving machine is a 3.4Ghz p4 1Gb (400hz) Intel with hyperthreading turned on. Some archive utils take many hours so to help save time for others im going to add details of the programs ive used, time taken, file sizes and ease. All archiving will be against a full version of Office 2003 with SP1 and hotfixes 4179 Files 635 MB (666,304,573 bytes) ---------------------------------------------------- ZIP Zip SFX Best 320 MB (335,891,547 bytes) Archive time taking ~5 Minutes Info:- Not a lot else to say about this program as its been around since the start. This is the standard windows archive format and should only be use for speed, multi platform or backward compatibility. Better archiving tools exist but still has its place on the windows platform. Compression - 5 Compress Speed - 9 Decompress speed - 8 Recommend - YES / default in winxp ---------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- WinRAR 3.50 RAR SFX Best (with default options) 262 MB (274,966,810 bytes) Archive time taking ~22 Minutes Info:- The RAR format quickly became the internets default pritate format due to its increased compression over ZIP. WinRAR comes with a good gui and shell intergration along with other options like volume splitting, a comprehensive SFX and the ability to read / write NTFS ADS's. I believe WinRAR has taken the market lead from Zip but not very popular with older users. Compression - 7 Compress Speed - 8 Decompress speed - 8 Recommend - YES ---------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- 7Zip 4.23 7z SFX Solid Archive Ultra/LZMA/Dictionary 96Mb/Word size 64 234 MB (245,592,982 bytes) Archive time taking ~2 hours Info:- From obscurity to mainstream, 7zip is a free open source archive utility found on sourceforge. The benefits in this archive program is that you have control over the memory and thus the archive size. 7zip format has also recently been added to WinRAR for compatibility. Fully integrated into the windows shell, 7zip was quickly adopted by internet users and normally a plugin within install programs and used by many here on msfn. Compression - 8 Compress Speed - 4 Decompress speed - 7 Recommend - YES ---------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- PAsQDa 4.1 -7 214 MB (224,738,133 bytes) Archive time taking ~42 hours Info:- This is an experimental command line program with very limited options. Uncompressing will only use the same full path so unable to decompress onto a second drive (c: to d:). Decompression would have taken ~6 minutes but unfortunately corrupted itself in the process. Not willing to rerun the test. Compression - 9 Compress Speed - 1 Decompress speed - 4 Recommend - NO ---------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- WinRK x PWCM 700 210 MB (221,068,682 bytes) Archive time taking ~21 hours Info:- Good clean gui with plenty of options but old online forum support. I would like to see better support for a program that seems to out compress its competition. From tests I have seen uncompress times ranging from 4 minutes to 12 hours! With and without errors. This is also reflected on the support forum making it unfortunately an unviable alternative but well worth experimenting with. This product is good but needs finishing so keey an eye on there site for updates (if ever). Compression - 9 Compress Speed - 2 Decompress speed - 5 Recommend - YES for test only ---------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- FileCompress 2.0 beta (UHARC 0.6) ALZ Best | Dictionary 32768 241 MB (253,595,126 bytes) Archive time taking ~44 minutes Info:- tba Compression - 8 Compress Speed - 6 Decompress speed - x Recommend - tba ----------------------------------------------------
  23. Within the $OEM$/RunOnceEx.cmd I have the following which adds a few reg settings. As you can see you need to precreate a reg file and use the REGEDIT /S command. REG ADD %KEY%\027 /VE /D "Importing Reg Tweaks" /f REG ADD %KEY%\027 /V 1 /D "REGEDIT /S %XPCD%\install\regtweaks.reg" /f
  24. Yes I do use MS Paint for only one reason. From some products and screen print, I cant paste direct into photoshop for some reason. So I use paint as a midway cut-n-paste between products.
  25. Shocked not a single person could reply. How to change a few icons with reg has been posted so added here for completeness. If more are know please add a reply.
