  1. When booting the XP disk, what error do you get??? On your OP you said that the update was happing inside windows and then froze, and it happened again when trying to load xp, was this also inside windows or before boot?

  2. Well, actually I'd prefer to use Winamp. I didn't think it was possible and have gone thru all the settings. Ok... an example... you go to "My Music", right click that folder and enqueue everything in it into winamp. Now you have a 1000 songs in a winamp. You click play, song number 1 starts playing. But next, instead of hearing song 2 you wanna hear song 45, and then after that 66 and so on. Without having to drag the songs you want into playing order under the current playing song, I want to be able to right click the songs I want next and click "Queue" or "Play Next" whatever the case may be. I'll try out the iTunes tonight though and see if it'll work. If anyone knows how to do this in Winamp though, that'd be great.

  3. Right clicking the file itself in explorer and doing this adds it to the bottom of a playlist already created. But, I like to load all the songs I have into winamp out of a particular folder/genre and then once in winamp scroll thru the playlist and find what I want. However, you either have to go with random, or straight thru the playlist. I want to be able to queue what I want to hear next inside the playlist itself.

  4. I'm on the hunt for a music app that will allow you to queue songs within a playlist. Something simple, right click the one you want next, click queue... somthing along the lines of that. I'm tired of having to drag songs under the current playing song in my winamp playlists. A while back I had an app like this but can't remember what it was called. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks. :thumbup

  5. Like booogy said, don't post the same message in multiple topics. We know how to search and find things in the forum, if you don't get an answer 10 minutes after you post just wait longer.

From what I can extract from the broken english, it seems to me something is running in your temp directory under the logged on user. Have you tried spyware, virus scans?? Clear your temp internet files, run CCleaner.

  6. No prob beppe... this is a learning forum. You actually don't need a central PC for a hub. Although, a hub will divide available bandwidth by the number of computers connected (by DHCP) whereas a switch will offer full-duplex and maximum bandwidth allowed to each PC connected. Let me know if you have any other problems.

  7. Correct. And remmber with either one or all computers connected at the same time, they will all have the top possible speed of your broadband due to the full duplex of the router/switch. The only way to go these days! :thumbup

  8. The answer is yes. With a switch and broadband, connect your dsl/cable into the uplink port of the switch and then plug in your nodes into 3 of the 5 ports on the switch. As you said, switches are full-duplex, you will be able to share files among all the computers connected to them if they're in the same domain/workgroup along with them all being able to be online and send/recieve data simultaneously.

  9. I have a buddy that has a few machines, different models and makes. He's looking to upgrade the RAM in all of them but isn't sure of the type of RAM in them and would rather not open them up untill the RAM is ready to be upgraded. Is there some RAM app out there like the equivalent of CPU-Z for CPUs that shows speed, type of PC RAM etc? TIA.

  10. I figured the P5WD2 was the best... thanks. I've got the LCD, vid card and am getting the case today. I suppose I'll go ahead and order the mobo next and then I may have to hold off on buying for a little while and let the cash flow replenish. I could probably handle little things though like fans and other accessories if you can think of anything.

Also, could you tell me what actually occurs when my RAM will be running in "Dual channel" mode. Once I have 2 1GB sticks in, obvisouly it will be quicker, but what actually occurs within the mobo itself when dual channel is activated?

  11. jcarle... What are you opinions on these two boards? The ASUS P5WD2 Premium ATX (the one we've been looking at since the beginning of the thread) and the ASUS P5AD2-E Premium ATX. Which one is better? It looks like on the P5AD2-E the wifi or radio is built in. Looks like 800MHZ RAM is native only to the P5WD2 and 533 on the P5AD2-E. Is the P5WD2 the best of the two?

Also, I was reading more on the specs for the P5WD2 and under the description for CPU support on the ASUS website it says "This motherboard supports the latest Pentium 4 CPU from Intel in LGA775 package. With 1066/ 800/ 533MHz FSB, 1MB L2 cache, Hyper-Threading..." does the part about the L2 Cache mean it only supports CPUs with only a 1MB L2?? B/C as you know I'm looking at the 3.2/3.4 w/ 2MB L2. TIA.

  12. Thanks nomisuk. I got the LCD today!!! It's absolutely gorgeous and huge!! Going from a standard 13.1 on my laptop to this 19" is just INSANE. Can't wait to get it hooked up into my new machine once it's built and see this baby on digital. Even on analog it looks awesome! I'm most likey going to order the case tomorrow and possibly the RAM or WD76. Just an update. Later!

  13. I have my reasons ;) ... I have 2 degrees in network security and network tech and when I was in school we learned that SYSKEY hadn't been cracked yet and don't even try it b/c it's impossible (nothing in technology is impossible, look at blowfish, RSA, etc). This was right at the verge of xp being released and 2000 Pro/Server in full swing, and I know XP incorporates SYSKEY encryption as well. Just curious if progress has been made because It would be nice to have a tool to crack it, LC 5 laughs at you. Jcarle, have you seen my other question back in Hardware? Thanks.

  14. I haven't read up on this in a while and was curious if someone had successfully

been able to find a way to brute force a SYSKEY protected 2000/XP password. I have LC5 and I know it warns that it cannot break SYSKEY encrypted passwords. Thanks.

  15. Quick memory question. I was reading this review of the P5WD2 and they are talking about overclocking the memory. Using PC2-5400 Corsair@667MHz they were able to reach clock speeds of 1066! Think the kingston can do that or atleast achieve 800MHz and stay stable? And second, I know that the board comes with alot of new features that allow you to OC inside of windows itself. Yet they are in the BIOS... Looks like they are selecting DDR2-889?? Why are those not the normal frequencies and is this where I would go to safly OC the RAM in the BIOS? Thanks.

  16. Alright, thanks for the drive suggestion.... looks like a good one to me. And I think I will just go with the Antec and get the whole package on the first time. No sense in buying a case then paying for another PSU and shipping and all that jazz. Plus I like the 1394 in the front. Which brings me to something I was wondering. I notice on the board there are extra connections for USB, 1394, Game port and all that... the cables that are coming with the board itself... can I just run those to the front of the case and then the ports become active? I was wondering that looking around at all the cases, and that seems the only way. Thanks again jcarle!

  17. jcarle, as far a dvd drive I was wondering if you could help me find a good one for a good price. I know you said you love that Pioneer but I'm really looking for a SATA DVD burner with Dual-Layer capabilities for DVD-R so I won't have to upgrade later. Just wondering if you knew of any good ones or could make some suggestions... or any one else.

This is what I currently have:

    Asus P5WD2 Premium $215.50 Newegg

    Intel Pentium 4 640 3.2 800MHz FSB LGA 775 EM64T $267.99 Newegg

    Kingston KVR667D2N5/1G 1GB DDR2-667 PC2-5300 $167.00 ZipZoomFly

    SATA Dual-Layer DVD +/- R/RW $?

ATI RADEON X300 SE 128 MB Freeeee

    19" Samsung Sync Master 910t $300.00 Friend

    Western Digital Raptor WD740GDRTL 74GB $188.89 Newegg

Antec PERFORMANCE TX640B Black $120.99 Newegg

    Total: $1260.37

I guess all I'm lacking now is the DVD. I'm planning on upping the RAM to 2GB at some point down the road to be able to use the dual capabilities, and most likely the vid card too. The case seems a little high, but I guess it's about right for a quality case. What do you think about this case? Any more suggestions, cheaper places to buy, different components? Thanks.

  18. Thats what I though, I will definatly be getting the OEM 76. :D I will be getting the retail processor though, like ya said. So now I'm looking at 3.4 P4 650 Prescott however, there is no 650j... It still looks like a great processor though, 64-bit support, 2 MB Cache but it just looks like I'll need to invest in a good fan of some sort to keep it cool as all the reviewers are saying it runs hot.

Also thinking about just going down to the 3.2, p4 640... its over $125 cheaper, same exact features as the 3.4 (2M L2, 64-bit)..... 200MHz really worth an extra $136? I'm kinda doubting it.
