  1. I have XP Home: Is there any problem if I include HotFixes in my procedures that are only for professional (so I don't have to account for the application suitability) when I create my procedures? That way I could use the same hotfix directory and bat file for both home and professional installs. " Q327696 and Q811114 are updates for IIS which is only available in Professional version of Windows XP. So if you have Home Edition you don't need to install these updates. " Is there any harm if I were to include these on the Home version - based upon the earlier posts - I would expect that the system would hopefully ignore the unnecessary fix applications...
  2. From time to time, I read suggestions (from a variety of sources) that say it is better to install windows to its own partition - apparently makes it easier when doing a reload down the road... I currently have windows and program files on Disk #1 (c:\) and Documents and Settings on Disk #2 (D:\). From my perspective - I don't see the benefit of moving program files to D:\ so that windows has exclusive ownership of C:\ If I were to do a new reinstall of windows - it would generate a new registry table - and all references to the programs @ "D:\Program Files" would be lost - requiring me to reinstall them all over again. If I were to do an overlay of the existing windows setup - my program usability and references in the registry would be maintained (for the most part) - but what have I achieved by having them on d: instead of c:\? Maybe when they say windows should be installed in its own partition - they are actually suggesting what I already do - keep the documents and settings directory separate - so the data and settings can be recovered and resued when rebuilding the OS (in case a format of C: is required)... Am I on the right track - or should I consider moving program files to a new drive?
  3. Did a little more checking: 810243 is for Media Center XP only - (not home or Professional) 817979 is available from MS web site - posted 6/18/2003 818060 is available from MS web site - posted 6/21/2003 816868 is available form MS web site - posted 7/14/2003
  4. 1) I found the (4) hotfixes that do not have an official download site @ http://warp2search.net/modules.php?name=Se...rticle&artid=21 Windows XP Home & Professional Post Service Pack 1 Updates Chart 2) RE: you do not need Q327696 (october 2002) when you install Q811114 (may 2003). Q327696 states that it is for XP embedded with SP1 Q811114 only shows a download for XP Professional - not XP Home (I have Home) - should I not install Neither - Q327696 - or Q811114? It would be nice to be able to keep in sync with everyone else who references this update... 3) I found a web site that just removed Q811383 - says it has been replaced by Q816868 (see #1 above) 4) Q812793 - can't find a download - all the links appear to refer back to MS - and the web page is not available 5) Q817287 - can't find a download - appears to be only available via the update center - yet there must have been a download at some time in the past because you have it on your list 6) Q814078 = JScript 5.6 (js56nde.exe) appears to be the german file version. I found js56nen.exe on a european ms server - this appears to be the english version. Apparently removed from the US server because of the Justice Department consent agreement regarding Sun Java... FWIW (thanks)
  5. My unscientific and untested comparison shows the following on my list - but missing from this posting: q327696 q329623 q330909 q810243 q816868 q817979 q818060 q282010 q820291
  6. Hi - I am using two distinct hard drives for my system (not partitions) Drive C:\Windows Drive C:\Program Files et al I've previsouly used: [GuiUnattended] ProfilesDir="D:\Documents and Settings" to locate the documents and settings on drive d: If I do a new install using my unattended installation cd - will I lose all the data contained in the shared documents files and the userspecific my document files - or will the install safely overlay the new directories onto the existing directories? If the users are not specified during the install - I would assume that their specific files are safe until the user accounts are created. *************** When doing a new install on top of an existing setup (no automatic format) - the existing windows directory is swaped with a new directory to ensure there is no "cross mingling" between the two. Is there any way to rename or swap out the existing "program files" directory so I can tell which are valid installations and which are bogus because they are no longer referenced in the registry? Thanks for any thoughts -
  7. Solved the problem - best described as operator error: I tried the procedure with files located in c:\xyz and everything worked ok - leading me to believe the path was not working as expected... Suggested path - C:\XPCD\$OEM$\$1\Applications\ATI_CP\setup.exe -R I had lengthed the path with the inclusion of a note: C:\XPCD (updated thru 08.15.2003)\$OEM$\$1\Applications\ATI_CP\setup.exe -R This must have make the path too long, or contained inappropriate characers for use with the -r switch. thanks -
  8. Thanks - Some times I feel like a good -DUH-
  9. Just wondering - Is there a required install sequence for the various hotfixes (that would be easily adopted)? Should I install my numeric sequence - release date - or doesn't it really matter? What happens if there is a hotfix to a hotfix, and they are installed in reverse order? Is the system smart enough to sequence and apply only the lastest file versions? *********** Just out of curosity - when using the windows update site - sometimes there are downloads that must be installed as a stand alone and the system is rebooted prior to continuing with additional downloads. How come we can install all of these hotfixes at one time - with out rebooting inbetween? Thanks for the input...
  10. Hi - I've downloaded both the tweak shortcut and the TweakPowertoyUI Setup. Running the setup file through WinRAR - I extract 2 files: powertoys license and TweakUI interface. The example posted on the web shows three files - I'm missing the taskswitchpowertoysetup. I assume that I do not want the original file (which I did the extraction on) transfered to the install\powertoys directory. Is there something that I'm not doing or understanding that reults in my having 2 instead of 3 files in my install directory? Thanks -
  11. Would appreciate it if someone would verify my setup to see if I am on the right track: Do I need to specify the particular driver (as I have done below) - or just specify the directory path where the drivers are? Trying to add drivers for: 1)OnBoard Promise Raid 20276 Chip 2) Maxtor Ultra 100 PCI Controller Card (promise chips) 3) Maxtor Ultra 133 PCI Controller Card (promise chips) To summarize in my particular case: 1) Add the following four lines to my winnt.sif file: [scsi] FastTrak133_xp = "WinXP Promise SBFastTrak133 Lite Controller", FastTrak Ultra133TX2_xp = "WinXP Promise ULTRA133 TX2 Controller", Ultra Ultra100_xp = "WinXP Promise ULTRA100 Controller", Ultra 2) Add the following two lines to my winnt.sif file: [unattended] OemPnPDriversPath="Drivers\PromiseRaid\Fasttrak.inf;Drivers\MaxtorUltra\ultra.inf;Drivers\Catalyst3_6\Video_DriverKXP_INF;Drivers\Catalyst3_6\TV_Capture\WDM_XP" (Note: in the above - I've specified the specific inf driver for the 3 disk controllers - but not for the video and capture - I assume that I should remove the fasttrak.inf and ultra.inf portions...) 3) Added the following two files to the directory ~ c:\xpcd\$OEM$\$1\drivers\PromiseRaid\ FASTTRAK SYS Microsoft WindowsXP miniport driver FASTTRAK INF Microsoft Windows miniport setup file 4) Added the following two files to the directory ~ c:\xpcd\$OEM$\$1\drivers\MaxtorUltra\ Ultra.sys Ultra.inf ultracoins.dll (do I need the ultracoins.dll?) Thanks -
  12. I have the same problem - I'm trying to create a setup.iss file for my control panel 3.6 and the -r switch is not working. When I "setup.exe -R" - I get a message that the file can't be found. If you could post the revised code that works - I could cut and past for control panel. It would be nice to understand what I'm doing wrong - so I can use the procedure for other iss applications...
  13. Correction on above: 2) Add the following two lines to my winnt.sif file: [unattended] OemPnPDriversPath="Drivers\Promise Raid\fasttrak.inf;" 3) Add the following two files to the directory ~ c:\xpcd\$OEM$\$1\drivers\Promise Raid\ FASTTRAK SYS Microsoft WindowsXP miniport driver FASTTRAK INF Microsoft Windows miniport setup file
  14. So to summarize in my particular case: 1) Add the following two lines to my winnt.sif file: [scsi] FastTrak133_xp = "WinXP Promise SBFastTrak133 Lite Controller", FastTrak 2) Add the following two lines to my winnt.sif file: [unattended] OemPnPDriversPath="Drivers\Promise Raid\; 3) Add the following two files to the directory ~ c:\xpcd\$OEM$\$1\drivers\Promise Raid\fasttrak.inf; FASTTRAK SYS Microsoft WindowsXP miniport driver FASTTRAK INF Microsoft Windows miniport setup file
