  1. Going into device manager - I accessed the advanced settings panel and changed the link speed from auto detect to 10mbps / half duples, per your suggestion. The yellow exclamation mark is removed and the info bubble informs me that it is trying to acquire a network address. The lights on my switch = Link/Act (on) 100 (off) Full/Col (off). After a while - the yellow exclamation point returns with the same error message. When I reset it back to auto detect - all 3 lights on the switch are illuminated again. The Motherboard is several years old - so a return is not in the works. If it is in fact defective - than a PCI network card may be my next step. Where is it trying to acquire a network address from? I see that there is an option in device manager to assign a locally administered address. Would putting value in that field resolve anything?
  2. Trying to add a computer to my home wired network. Gigabyte 8I-EXP motherboard with ethernet connection on motherboard (Intel Pro 100/ve network connection). I have activated the device in bios and applied the manufacturers device driver. The device show up as functioning properly in device manager. I have the computer attached to a wired switch - and the display lights are illuminated. (BTW - I use a dial-up modem for internet - don't think that would cause any problems). The device is show as not connected in the system tray icon and in the LAN network connection screen. The specific message is " Limited or No Connectivity. You might not be able to access the internet or some network resources. This problem occured because the network did not assign a network address to the computer." I have tried running the repair option, but it did not resolve anything. I have tried turning off my Norton and Windows Firewall to see if that was a problem - no change. Wondering if anyone might have some suggestions for my next steps... Thanks -
  3. I had to download an inf from the web for my monitor. After unpacking the zip file - I am left with 3 files - 1) security catalog 2) setup information 3) icc profile I updated the drivers via the hardware device manager by clicking on update drivers and then browsing the folder containing the 3 files and selecting the only item displayed - the setup information file. This installed the monitor. However, I was wondering, rather than having to browse to the folder and point to the file - could I transfer the setup infomation file to my system directory so that it would be recognized automatically? Would I only need to copy the one file *.inf (security) and not the other two? What directory would I transfer the file to? C:\Windows I did a search for *.inf - but did not come up with any on my c:\ drive
  4. Well, after a bit more research - it would appear that the problem is basically a conflict - he is running XP pro - and is setup to automatically log onto his companies network via a domain. From what I read, the domain need to be terminated in order to connect to the home network workgroup. In as much as he does not know his domain password - I'm going to pass and have his IT guy at work get involved...
  5. Having a bit of mind block... I'm trying to network a friends new laptop into his existing home network. The 3 existing desktops are networked and sharing an internet connection as well as the 3 local printers conntected to each machine using a linksys wireless network. Two machines are running XP-SP2 and one is on W98SE I can run the add printer wizard on any machine, and it will locate all 3 of the networked connected machines. I've now added the 4th machine - a dell d600 with internal wireless network (running XP-SP2). It finds and connects to the network and I am able to access the internet. However, it will not find any of the other machines or printers. I'm guessing that there is some setting or port that needs to be opened in the default firewall so that we can see the various network devices. Hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Would this change be required on the new machine - or on the existing 3 machines - or on all 4? Appreciate any pointers - I'm lost...
  6. after hours searching the web - finally found a source: http://www.frontx.com/order_c.html I'm sure there must be others - but at least its a start...
  7. I'm having the same problem with my Gigabyte 8I-exp motherboard. I looked and looked in the various bios settings and can't see anything... If anyone has info on how to access the smartdisk feature for the board as well - Thanks!
  8. Hope someone can point me in the right direction... I have an Antec 1080 AMG server case with 2 usb ports and 1 firewire port in the front of the case. The lead wires from these 3 ports terminate in individual header pin connectors. I am trying to connect to a Gigabyte 8I-exp motherboard and am having problems - the header pins are too far away and the space is too tight for my eyes and hands to properly connect the various individual leads. I would like to obtain header plugs that I can solder the various leads onto and then simply plug the 2 (or 3) connectors onto the motherboard headers. I have searched the web and local stores - but can only find what I want as part of a pre-assembled kit - I can't locate the header plug sold by themselves. I would need (1) Firewire header port header plug (gigabyte style???) I would need (1) USB 2 x 5 header port header plug (gigabye style???) or (2) 1 x 5 header port header plugs... I have contacted gigabyte tech support and then keep refering me to a gigabyte RETAIL dealer (is there such a thing) or their own sales department. Naturally, their sales department will not respond to my inquiries! The few gigabyte dealers on the web I've tried have no idea what I'm talking about (as expected). I'm sure a generic plug would work fine... Any thoughts - part numbers, mfg info or vendor information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks -
  9. Looking for some software suggestions - I'm trying to build a home DVD movie to fit on a SL 4.7g DVD disc. I have several AVI files created using MS Movie Maker and several VOB's I'm trying to stitch together and have the content controlled by a menu - suitable for use on a home TV-DVD player. I'm currently trying to burn a project using Roxio DVD Menu Builder 6 - but am having problems... The estimated size at the bottom of the screen is 4.504g (using a 4.7g disk) When I start the process, I get a warning message that the estimated final size is between 4.325g and 4.899g and may not fit on the disk, do I want to continue? Naturally, at the end of the encoding process, I get a final message that the project is too large. Reading other messages on the Roxio board regarding this problem - others have mentioned that the program does not appear to utilize the full size of the disk - often leaving 25% open after reducing the project contents to get the process to begin. Is there another way to easily accomplish what I need to do? 1) I have tried to burn the project to an image file - this works fine. The results are an easy creater image file with a size of 3,625,200 and a movie.001 file with a size of 991,490 (FWIW - combined these two files total 4, 616,690). How do I play the image file or manipulate the data? I don't know what to do now that I have an image file - is this propriety format that needs a Roxio player? 2) Instead of burning my DVD project to a DVD Disc - can I burn it to my hard disk to determine the final size? I could then use DVD Shrink if necessary to get it to fit on the disc and burn it via CD creator? 3) Would DVD Builder 7.0 work better than 6.0 in utilizing the full disk availability? 4) Is there a 3rd party program (purchase, sahreware or freeware) that would help meet my needs? I've read about Sonic DVD and others - but others have had issues... Hate to purchase something if there is a good freeware application out there... Thanks -
  10. If I copy (or move) a compress file to another directory or drive - does the file in the new location remail compressed or is it returned to its original size? If I burn a copy of the file to a CD-RW or DVD-RW drive - are they burned in the compressed or uncompressed state? (for example - if compressed files are burned - would they be readable on a machine that runs w98 or w95? Thanks -
  11. Another related question. I burned a 4.6g video over the weekend - that just fit onto the 4.7g DVD-R disk. The burn seemed to go w/o any problems. ********************** I did note that the Imation Disks I was using did not have any speed referenced on the packaging and that the only burn speed presented by the Roxio program was a max of 2x (instead of the 8x max it is rated for). Should I assume that the lower burn speed is a result of non-certified media? I checked the drive mfg web site - and did not recognize any of the disk manufacturers products - it was almost as if it is in code... *********************** When I played the DVD I just burned back on my computer - it seemed to take a while for the disk to load - constant flashing of the drive access light - but eventually WMP opened and the movie began to play. About 75% - 80% of the way into the movie - suddenly the entire computer froze - requiring me to stop WMP via the task manager. Each time I tried - it happened again. If I jumped to a late chapter in the movie - I experience freeze-up. I am assuming that the longer load times and the end-of-disk freeze-up are related. Does this make sense? Because of the media certification concern - would burning at 1x help eliviate the playback problem? Thought I'd ask for some opinions b4 I just start burning disks needlessly. Thanks!
  12. How do you turn this off?
  13. Just purchased and installed my first DVD burner. If I right click on a folder and use the "send to" option to copy the folder and 4g of data to the new DVD/CD RW drive - will XP them burn the disk in DVD -R mode (type of media I'm using) and include all 4g of data? Or does the "send to" feature just with with CD capacity RW drives? I've previsouly installed the MS XP-HighMat Support CD Writing Wizard (KB831240) - don't know specifically what this accomplishes... Or do I need to install a 3rd party application such as Roxio DVD Creator (that came bundled with the drive)? Just looking for some advise before I waste a disk... Thanks!
  14. Thank you both for your replies - Appreciate the history of -R, that was what I vaguely remembered. I think I'll start out with that format when I am buring disks for use on other hardware applications... I'm always a late adopter - I realize the DL is out now, but with limited and relatively expensive media - this gives me a chance to experiment at a lower cost - before I hand down the 4.7g drive to someone else...
  15. Just purchased a +/- DVD burner and plan on playing around a bit with it over the weekend. The clerk in the store stated that current generation DVD players can handle either version of the Media (+r/-r) and that it didn't matter which discs I used. Unfortunately - I don't have a stand alone player to test out this theory. I play all my DVD's on my computer. Would I be better to use one or another media for mainstream player compatability? **************
  16. So am I correct that by slipstreaming SP2 - I did not install any default JAVA (MS or Sun)? If so, I'll download and install manually- I have been using the rebuilt system off and on for the past two weeks and have not noticed any problems - so I may not be hidding a Java Based Web Site... Thanks!
  17. I just did a new installation with a SP2 slipstream disk. From what I have read - the slipstream service pack removed the MS virtual machine (Java) that was on my original XP disk - so I am lead to belive that I do not have Java installed on my machine. Should I install either Sun Java or MS Vm Java at this time - or wait until I need it in the future? Which leads me to my main question... Briefly - what does Java do - and how would I know when it was required and not available (so that I could install it in the future)? Only slightly confused...
  18. Another way to find keys on an already installed system is to use the BELARC Advisor.
  19. I have the common tasks option on - but don't see any option to hide the contents of the folder... Is there another setting I need to verify?
  20. The OEM condition of viewing a system folder in Explorer is a screen with the message: These files are hidden. This folder contains files that keep your system working properly. You should not modify its contets. I had to display the contents of Windows\System32 to modify a file. How do I reset the folder to again show the warning message? Thanks!
  21. gregD - thanks for the script... In as much as the folder is placed on the bottom of the menu, rather than the top of the menu with the other MY FOLDERS - I have been rethinking what I am trying to accomplish. Here's what I now envision. In the Shared Video Folder - I have a sub-folder Named "DVD Videos". In that folder are various shortcuts that start the videos. I created a shortcut that points to the "Shared Video\DVD Videos" folder - thinking that I could pin that short cut to the start menu (upper left corner). However, the pin option is not available, and the shortcut does not appear on the most frequently used list (at least during my brief testing). Therefore, I conclude that you can not pin a shortcut. Would it work if your script was modified so that it displays the "Shared Video\DVD Videos" folder instead of the "My Video" folder on the start menu? Or won't this work with non-system special folders? What would need to be done? It looks as if I would also need to substitute C:\ in place of H:\ That way, I would click start>DVD Video>and then the specific video shortcut containted in the folder! 1) Is this special folder icon transfered to the start menu? 2) If I were to employ the MS File Transfer Wizard - would this register change be included - or would it need to be reinstalled when I rebuild my machine in the future? (Not a problem - I'll just save the reg file - just curious). Many Thanks!
  22. Thanks - I'll give it a try and play around - funny that MS didn't think enough of the video folder to give the the same treatment as pictures and music....
  23. The default install configuration includes "My Docments", "My Music", and "My Pictures" on the upper right corner of the start menu. Is there a way to include "My Videos" on the same panel? Thanks -
  24. The default configuration shows My Documents, My Pictures and My Music on the start menu. Is there a way to also display my videos? Registry change? Utility (tweak or X-setup)? XP option switch? Thanks -
  25. If I may hijack this thread - I'm totally confused about RAID and PCI Hard Disk Controllers.... From reading bits and pieces, I've setup my ATA/133 controller as follows: [MassStorageDrivers] "Intel® 82801BA Ultra ATA Controller" = OEM "Primary IDE Channel" = OEM "Secondary IDE Channel" = OEM [OEMBootFiles] idechndr.inf IdeBusDr.sys IdeChnDr.sys Txtsetup.oem [Unattended] OemPnPDriversPath="Drivers\000_Intel_Inf;Drivers\001_Promise_FullRaid;Drivers\002_Intel_AppAcc;Drivers\004_Intel_Lan;Drivers\005_Nec97f;Drivers\009_Maxtor_ATA In 009_maxtor_ATA -I've included: readme.bat txtsetup.oem ulcoins.dll ultra ultra.cat ultra.inf ultra.sys I am installing windows on Drive C:\ I am installing my Documents and Settings Directory on D:\ (mirror raid) [MassStorageDrivers] "Intel® 82801BA Ultra ATA Controller" = OEM "Primary IDE Channel" = OEM "Secondary IDE Channel" = OEM "WinXP Promise FastTrak TX2000 (tm) Controller (PDC20276)" = OEM [OEMBootFiles] idechndr.inf IdeBusDr.sys IdeChnDr.sys Txtsetup.oem Fasttrak.sys Fasttrak.inf Fasttrak.cat TXTsetup.oem In 001_Promise_FullRaid I've included: fasttrak fasttrak.cat fasttrak.inf fasttrak.sys readme.txt txtsetup.oem Because the raid is not being used for windows installation, but only for D & S setup - will I be able to install the drivers this way? Do I have a problem with (2) txtsetup.oem references under [oembootfiles]? I'm totally confused---
