  1. I've been using various versions of theworld for at least a year now. Prior to that on the i ex shell I used Maxthon and before that Myie2 . The beta versions of the 2.0 series are gradually implementing the features already in the 1.0 series, Previous beta versions hardly had any user confiurations and were very buggy on win98se TheWorld 1.0 series has a lot of useful features that aren't immediately apparent. ie I have about 30 different webpage urls set up to open from various keyboard shortcuts so I'm hoping they get into version 2.0 You can even string a number of urls together and launch them from one key. Browse with safe and silent mode enabled it is an excellent filter and blocker over and above the various adfilter/blocking features. Theworld has its own plugins section but its not easy navigating the chinese forum for them. Some maxthon plugins can be used in theworld - its trial and error. http://forum.maxthon.com/index.php?showtopic=31637 or you could try maxthon itself, I can verify the comments made above by whatever420 about it.
  2. TheWorldbrowser I know because my 98se comes on a vendor's oem restore disk which has internet explorer 5.5 or something already on it Last time I reinstalled the o/s I quickly loaded up theworld before upgrading to int ex 6.0 first, the world popped up a dialogue saying int ex 6.0 required. It would still function, but minimally so without all its security features. Theworldbrowser has many similarities to maxthon and can also utilise quite a few of its plugins. Both are more secure than plain internet explorer and far better featured http://www.ioage.com/cn/download.htm translated http://64.233.179.104/translate_c?u=http:/...cn/download.htm You can download the installer or non install version and simply run it from its folder Version 2.0 of the world is more advanced with multithreading but like maxthon 2.0 is still in beta stage with limited features compared to the 1.0 series http://www.ioage.com/en/index.htm downloads for different os inc win98 http://www.ioage.com/en/download.htm
  3. Thats useful to know oscardog, thanks. I've used clean disk for ages and had it lock up from time to time when overwriting but no explorer errors or blue screens. Maybe forcibly terminating it with ctrl alt + delete one time too many screwed things up. I don't get any glitches with it on xp but there you go - software versions aren't released with 98se in mind now. I'm just happy not to get those explorer error boxes popping up so often if the intel extension was causing anything amiss, its a moot point now because its staying removed I don't need it.
  4. On a forum of highly resourceful people it is natural to extend credit to those of us who are basically duffers. A few hours will tell but I'm pretty sure its either clean disk security which has a right click option for fully erasing files or folders. or possibly the right click desktop option provided by the intel graphics control driver which I came across via the nirsoft shellexview page http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/cs-003927.htm Even tho' the rt click wasn't slow I already ran the reg file to disable it as it doesn't sound to good.
  5. Looks like its fixed ! An afternoon without errors - despite trying everything to get one - since removing a bunch of 3rd party shell extensions http://www.helpwithwindows.com/techfiles/e...er-crashes.html Credit to Arie on bbs for putting me onto it. I ended up using regsupreme to remove a bunch of shell extensions that shellexview didn't list. Now I can progressively restore the backups to find out exactly which extension is the culprit. Thanks for your assistance here.
  6. Thanks I haven't touched anything like that. Maybe the vendor did but that was 4 years ago, if so its taken a long time to surface. This pc doesn't get any heavy usage I use my other one with xp for burning and stuff.
  7. Here we go: Any software I can see listed there i have used before without explorer errors in the past. I need point32 for different mouse button assignments, dodgy forefinger, I can't use normal left click mouse button position. I know it is a hook but I've blocked it from internet access and again no previous explorer troubles with it installed.
  8. Thanks I've not tried dr watson before. Apart from starting it and taking a snapshot I'm not sure how to use it? I can't pinpoint what brought it on. I first noticed it over a month ago, however I've had a stinking flu since then and what I was up to on the pc at that time is a distant vague blur. scanned disk for errors defragged Tried unistalling any recent new softwares cleaned registry of them scanned for nasties etc. It doesn't happen when my partner uses voice recognition software on the pc. Only happens when I'm doing things with the mouse Tried a different mouse. but I'm sure its nothing to do with a mouse as I can see from searching around that loads of people get/got explorer errors on 9x it can be copying or moving a file, opening or closing a folder or application rightclicking on something - seems very random. Can go for hours with nothing then can get a whole spate of it. If there is a pattern I've not spotted it.

  10. Despite your kind help I'm lost already I find the mdgx thread and home page baffling Haven't a clue what to download, Plus some links take me to microsoft I don't get it ? I remember now that is originally why I posted this thread I think a lot of you guys think this forum is user friendly but i can assure you much of it isn't to the uninitiated.
  11. Hey thanks for the terrific replies whilst I've been away. I'll sift through and implement what i like or am able to.
  12. Thanks I've done that - working well I was just wondering from reading about the other different packs/fixes mentioned in the stickies here.
  13. Bearing in mind that I want 98se to continue looking like 98se
  14. Just in case the above is miscontrued it is a legitimate licensed version from a company I'll purchase a cd if it is really best to apply fixes that need the cd files and they aren't available on the net, but would like to know the score first . rgds
  15. I'm new to this and reading the thread is a bit daunting in places I bought my p3 secondhand and it only has a restore disk which 98se and office 97 et al is installed from this means I cannot choose the order of install on many things and cannot do things like " Copy \WIN98 directory with its contents from CD into your hard drive " which is mentioned in the slipstreaming guide I actually came across 5p2.0 elsewhere with no info apart from what was on the download mirror, installed the options I wanted and that was it I get the gist that 98lite and sp 2.0 alone will significantly help or do I really need other things to speed things up ? thanx ps Just noticed since writing the above I also need the cd fo installingl 98lite is there anywhere to get the necessary for this and other installs mentioned here on the web ?
  16. Thanx for the help guys I'll untick avgamsvr and avgcc from startup. Resetting the disk cache size has rectified the slowdown rgds
  17. Thankyou Gape I've reset the cache with cacheman to the old min and max of 8192 which seems to have improved things, but haven't been on long enough to tell in the long run. just a couple of hours now, mainly browsing and opening a few folders in explorer and typing, nothing heavy. [i've tried numerous other cache settings in the past from reading up on it but non worked very well. As well as my usage I have to allow for my partner running Dragon naturally speaking voice recognition software in tandem with other programmes and this uses a lot of resources] According to cacheman physical memory available = 522736 kb memory free = 302112 kb wintop indicates around 95% cpu idle Here's my current processes: Platform: Windows 98 SE (Win9x 4.10.2222A) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KERNEL32.DLL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSGSRV32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MPREXE.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mmtask.tsk C:\PROGRAM FILES\AGNITUM\OUTPOST FIREWALL\OUTPOST.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KB891711\KB891711.EXE C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE C:\WINDOWS\TASKMON.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\PROMON.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SYSTRAY.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\GRISOFT\AVGCC.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\GRISOFT\\AVGAMSVR.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT HARDWARE\MOUSE\POINT32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DDHELP.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SPOOL32.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\IEXPLORE.EXE Outpost and avg are light on resources We have Office 97 pro my partner uses dragonpad and word a fair deal for dictation, but I only use Editpad lite which takes up negligible resources we don't use anything else in office. I have applications such as nero and power dvd etc but they weren't being used. rgds
  18. Thankyou very much for the work that has gone into this I was very impressed after installing it, programmes were loading faster and folders opening more quickly. However within an hour or so of not too demanding usage each time I am down to a crawl and running out of memory and have to reboot. I've noticed that since the install of 2.0 the disk cache size has been altered to to min 8192 max 264415 do you think this is the reason ? rgds EDIT - I'm using a pentium3, 1ghz with 512mb [recognized] and plenty of free HD space
