  1. But, there seems to be some stuff that don't actually require Internet Explorer to run, but the installer checks for Internet Explorer and punishes you unless you're able to lie to it that Internet Explorer's installed!
  2. To prevent that problem, use a firewall!
  3. But the file is monstrous! That's about as big as an OS ISO! Also, if it supports Windows ME, then there's a chance of someone being able to make it work with Windows 98 SE! I dunno if Windows ME is that much different then Windows 98 SE.
  4. That problem usually is seen only with older PCs, AFAIK. No big deal if that problem only occurs during the Windows installation process and it don't lock up.
  5. I have heard that Linux can do that if you mess up when using the chmod command!
  6. That's prohibitively expensive. I minus will get an Athlon 64 FX55 if that costs almost $800.
  7. That's for the registry and ini files only!
  8. A while back, I caught a major virus. The symptoms were similar to what you had, but no bloody diarrhea. I woke up with a major stomach ache then started having diarrhea. 2 hours later, still having diarrhea. I had major diarrhea. When I was in the middle of having diarrhea, it seemed like it wasn't gonna stop filling the toilet. I ended up going to the bathroom every approximately 20 minutes. Then at 2 PM, I started feeling overheated and the stomach ache got worse to the point that I started barfing. Then around 6 PM, finally was feeling better and thus stopped barfing. I hate those viruses.
  9. FAT32 Are you experimenting to find the upper limit, or do you need a fixed size swap file that large? I discovered this by accident when wondering which fixed swap file size to set.
  10. With Windows 98 SE, (probably other versions of Windows 9x too) if the swap file is set to bigger than 768 MB, Windows then refuses to continue with the error message saying that there's insufficient memory to run Windows and to disable some stuff in config.sys and autoexec.bat. But, the swap file isn't physical memory! So why does that matter? This is NOT RAM I'm talking about, it's just the swap file size! Has anyone else seen this?
  11. It appears to be fine.
  12. I dunno. You should use ActiveSMART, which is available at the following web site: http://www.ariolic.com/activesmart/ Even the trial version is fully functional, AFAIK. After you ran ActiveSMART, please post the results. Because the HDD may still be bad, even if there wasn't any bad sectors found.
  13. Bad news, that sounds like a bad HDD. It likely has bad sectors. Thus, you should replace the HDD.
  14. If you're OC'ing your processor, increase the Vcore.
  15. Wrong. Windows 98 does support ACPI. And there are security updates. Probably just another troll promoting Windows XP.
  16. Probably impending HDD failure.
  17. That's if crashes occured with benchmarks and games. Usually, if you can't even complete a Windows installation process, then there's no way that it would pass benchmarks and games! Just checking. With bad caps, the crashes would get worse until it completely fails to boot!!!
  18. It's probably because of a flaky motherboard or processor. Possibly caused by processor overheating. The motherboard may have bad caps. For more information about the bad cap issue, please go to the following web site: http://badcaps.net
  19. fdv, I have the same problem, too. For me, Windows 2000 always bugs me about txfaux.dll during the Windows 2000 installation process. With your Service Pack 4 fileset, sp4files.zip, Windows 2000 has always bugged me about txfaux.dll.
  20. I see a problem here. It's obviously looking for files using the wrong file name! I see that it's looking for a file with a name contaning a comma in between. There's no such thing as a file called "wbem, msiprov.dll" nor "apppatch,slayerui.dll". Windows is freaking out, because it's being instructed to look up a name of a file that don't exist.
  21. That error message looks like the error message you can get if you don't have administrator rights. If you have administrator rights, your account probably is corrupted. Sorry. Thus it's likely time for another bug report. Did Windows crash? Did you check the event log for any bugcheck code? (when I said "crash", in this case, means that Windows freaked out with a stop error)
  22. A bad HDD likely is the cause. Did you check your HDD?
  23. Good news, even Microsoft says that it supports 1.0 GB of RAM! The Vcache issue is a bug. Because Vcache, the Windows 95 and Windows 98 32-bit disk caching system, when not explicitly limited can hog the RAM to the point where Windows runs out of RAM. The workaround is to: Open System.ini with Notepad and then look for the following entry: [vcache] Add the following entry under "[vcache]": MaxFileCache=524288 Then save and reboot Windows.
  24. Thanks again for the help but I have just installed Win 98 so I have barely anything on there.... 5.47 GB left out of 6 on my main hard drive. All programs are closed, nothing in the taskbar..... My other hard drive also nearly has 2 GB left. Thanks for the support guys... Edit: I just really don't know what my problem could be... I meet all minimum requirements. Any more ideas guys? 2nd Edit: Problem fixed, turned off a few things under startup. Thanks for the help guys. Probably a corrupted download. If the problem persists, you may have a buggy modem driver.
  25. May also want to run Prime95 and then check the Vcore.
