  1. I got the server installed this weekend and everything went great. However, I made an interesting discovery. I'm quite resistant to wizards and SBS 2003 has lots of them. I've installed 4 SBS servers this year now and this is the fist one that I ran the http://server/connectcomputer wizard to attach them to the domain. What I've done in the past is set up users on the server and then ran the "network Identification wizard" on the client PC to attach to the domain. The SBS wizard has an option of selecting the current user and in essence "migrating" the settings to the new domain user account. It tells me to make sure to uncheck "keep the documents private box". That box was never checked anyway, so in order to get throught the wizard, I checked it, let it apply the settings, then unchecked it. Long story short, it did also what I wanted it to do when I started this thread perfectly. It even didn't make a new account, nor any accounts had a .000 eg Administrator.000 accounts. Everything was very clean. All I had to do Question is "is it possible to do this with a standard 2003 server"? I know that wizard isn't available, but that was so clean that there has to be a similar way. I tried the scanstate/loadstate method of USMT 3.0 in a test environment and it worked, but still took extra time, both ways. I'm a little hesitant to use it until I've practiced a few times in order not to loose documents. I know it must work if enterprise domain admins rely on it.
  2. you can dowload acronis true image here and make an image of the share. then you mount the image file and it will appear as a drive.
  3. I did get 3.0. Fizban, would you briefly explain how you automated it? Prolly what Cluberti meant by scriptable. Remember I'm a noob at such things, but am learning quickly.
  4. Looks like an awesome tool. I will report back after some experimenting. edit... All I can say is how cool is this!!!! I have countless times backed up clients profiles the manual way (copy and paste) and obviously wasted countless hours and lots of harddrive space. I absolutely love this forum. Thanks Cluberti and everyone for all the helpfulness up to now.
  5. How do I maintain exact user profiles going from a peer to peer network to SBS2003. In other words, When I join clients to the domain, I don't want to have to reconfigure (or copy into the new account) all desktops, documents, email and favorites etc. I would like the upgrade to be fairly transparent to current users and keep my work minimal. When I do this I am going to implement folder redirection for my first time as described here and need the install to go as smoothly as possible while taking my skills to the level.
  6. I meant what does HKLM\System\CurecntControlSet\Services\Netlogon do to the DNS Situation? edit.... nevermind, i reread what you said and you explained it. thanks
  7. thanks valter for the website.... looks like a great resource.... Valter... what exactly does that reg edit do? Okay, I found the DNS forward tab and got it configured. I still don't know how to configure DNS in AD. Now the error has turned to warnings, so I made progress.... I will try and figure it out from the site that valter mentioned here The terminology is a little over my head though (eg - single label namespace). Here is a quote from that site that I would like to learn how to do... Again thanks to all for the guidance and I WILL eventually understand this.
  8. I feel dumb. I had configured that for the old ISP DNS not the new. Thanks Jim
  9. Would you mind posting (or emailing me) screenies of what the forwarder tab properly configured? and a screenie of where to find DNS in AD? as far as wins, I know where it is and in 7 years of experience (with small networks), have never had to configure it. I am installing another SBS next week and would like to get it right (this is the 4th server install this year). I'm also trying to learn folder redirection and caching of local settings dir so domain logons don't take so long. thanks again. jim
  10. It is a single DC. When it was installed, the dns pointed toward itself. The "installers" of the server told me to put in the IP of the server in each client's dns settings. This is in a sheriff's dept where they have a cisco router doing dhcp. When I configured it as they told me, the internet just crawled. I ended up putting the ISP's dns settings as the secondary dns server (in the DC) and the internet became the normal speed. All clients are set to get dns automatically. As far as WINS, I don't have a clue about it's configuration. Also, I don't see in AD where to do any dns configuration. I fairly new at this (domains) and haven't had any formal training. What should I look for in AD and WINS? thanks for the input. jim
  11. Yes, most PC's have this (actually all that I have looked at) and have since the server was installed in April. Most PC's had a fresh install of XP prior to server upgrade. I had one lately say the netlogon service wasn't running so I removed and readded it to the domain. the dc has a clean log I'm not sure how to add the suffix (in this case .local) as you mention
  12. I admit I'm a rookie at domains. I have 1 - 40 client domain w/ a 2003 standard server and when I look in the event viewer, I see these errors on almost all clients. They logon to the domain and have all domain resources available. Here's the message with a screenie... Everything seems to work properly, i just don't understand the error or how to correct it. they all have this error also.... thanks to everyone helping me to understand and hopefully correct this. jim
  13. How do I "configure forwarding on your DNS server to your ISP's DNS servers"? In network properties, I set primary DNS to the IP of the server and the secondary to the DNS IP of the ISP. When it was setup without the ISP's DNS, (I had all of the clients pointing to the server), the internet was painfully slow. It was the expected speed when primary dns was the server and secondary was the IP (on the server). The clients are confiured to getr dns automatically. Also, what are reverse lookup zones?
  14. So what are the Profile path and Local path for in the above screenie? And another noob question, I'm almost embarrassed to ask... Is the profile everything in the Documents and Settings directory for a particular user? I also know there are profiles for outlook also. I'm learning Domain Administration the hard way and have 5 domains with a county entity account that I picked up with 90 clients. So far I've sold 2 sbs 2003 servers and have had mixed luck,
  15. That is easy enough. What is this option for (Profile Path and Local Path).... see attached pic? would that method work for users that use several different PC's? (Would their doc's always be available on any PC)? I guess that is roaming profiles, right? Last question is how come it takes so long when one user logs off and another logs on to get to the desktop? The server is a under utilized P4 3.0 and there is a $2000 nortel switch and the 10 client PC's are P4's, so it's not hardware. I assume it is copying (or updating) their profile somewhere (either locally or on the server)
  16. I know this is elementary.... but I'd like to make a domain I support have their doc's on the server, rather than on local PC. I use a logon script that maps drives to apps, shared and user's directories, but some users still save documents locally. I'd like it so that when they open my doc's, they are really looking to the server unknowingly. Ideally, their "my documents" would be their user dir on the server.
  17. I can get to the other PC's via RDC... It's just slow (especially video). I think this Himachi will do the trick. I have a little password problem right now. Mainly, I am constantly on the server remotely and sometimes I need to get to another PC for my Quickbooks. I know I can also VPN to the QB datafile. I've been using PC anywhere to get into QB, but like RDC much better. I also have several fun PC's that I would like to get into remotely, so I decided to ask here about how to do it.
  18. I don't know where to put this post, so I decided here would be good. I want to access several PC's at my office with Remote Desktop Connection. I can get into my server and then another PC through the server's RDC. That makes things (video) really slow. How can I get into my other PC's directly from the internet? I assume that you assign the host PC a different port other than the standard RDC port and then access it by the domain name (or IP) and the new port number. TIA aj EDIT... I found out how to change the port number http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306759/
  19. How does one get or make WinPE 2.0? I'm a registered MS Partner and also am a beta tester and have the latest vista build. Can it be somehow "extracted" from the Vista DVD? TIA aj Edit... N/M, I read the post at the bottom of this forum and found it.
  20. Yes the 8 CD set works just fine and does activate. It appears to me that it is some sort of misprint on the MS part of the CD jackets. The key is the yellow sticker common to retail software, yet it says something about illegal without a Volume license. (From what I understand Volume license software doesn't need to be activated, so there is a problem right there). It passes the genuine test. I wonder about acquiring extra CAL's though. I asked a MVP about CAL's and he gave me a ration of BS saying it was illegal and CC'd the email to piracy@microsoft.com and told me to talk to them. How does one go about purchasing CAL's anyway for SBS2003??? aj Edit... the part number on this is the volume licensing media kit.
  21. I made the mistake of buying this... http://tinyurl.com/9zqzx The CD's say it takes a Volume license, yet it still has to be activated.
  22. Is there an easy way to convert all of the CD's that come w/ SBS2003 premium into 1 DVD? It's a big PITA to keep switching CD's. Also once converted, will it know what dir the cd2, cd3, etc is in automatically? TIA aj
