  1. I'm moving a SBS box from a 5 user location to a 20-25 user location and need some more CAL's. It is a SBS 2003 Standard OEM and I need to know where to purchase CAL's. I quoted the new location $100/CAL and told them they have to purchase them 5 at a time. Would someone kindly tell me where to purchase CAL's at (and hopefully at the best cost to me, as I'm a reseller). The proper part number(s) would suffice and i can search for them myself, but need some professional advice as to the differences. I think this is what I may need... T74-01094 for a 5 pack, but I'm not sure. I've also found this part number... T74-00137 for 20 packs, but I don't exactly know what an open license is and if they can be used with an SBS OEM. I'm going the route of device CAL's and also have a question about printers. The new location has 2 network printers. How does that enter into the Device CAL picture? as always TIA Jim
  2. Yes I did a clean install, installed whatever updates there were, right clicked a few times and rebooted a few times, just to makes sure everything worked (the second time), joined the domain as the domain admin using the local admin account and then the ability to view properties vanished. when the control panel did open, it was empty, as in no icons. I did get the 32 bit SP and it was installing on another perfectly working vista business client when i left tonight. In the morning, I will join it to the domain when I come in and see if it exibits the same behavior. The original PC that it happened to twice after joing the domain was 64 bit, but that should make absolutely no difference. I'd be curious if having the SP applied makes a difference. It is the wierdest thing I've seen for awhile. Again I thought the first time it happened was because the PC was O'Ced pretty hard and the registry or windows got a little corrupted, so the second time I did my install the right way and had the same results. Maybe it is just my crazy-assed luck though, or maybe it's just the fun of beta testing. I'll let everyone know.
  3. I have a technet subscription and that is where I acquired 2008. I haven't seen any beta sp's there and I don't see it on the connect site. I suppose I could find it on a torrent. BTW it's the 64 bit version of vista business I'm using (also from my technet sub). If you wanted to point me in the "proper" direction to "acquire" both 64 and 32 bit SP1, I'd happily try that and report back. It's no big deal if it doesn't work or fix the issue as I don't have any critical domain needs inside my small business and I can quickly do a reinstall of Vista. I just wanted to get in on the ground level w/ 2008 as it looks quite promising and I can hardly wait for the SBS version to evolve. Cluberti.... I'm the one who is still trying to get a handle on folder redirection/roaming profiles and would like to accomplish these 2 things before 2008 goes live. I haven't had a chance to make a test enviroment and experiment w/ the concept much, but really, really need to make the time. i doubt that it will change much w/ 2008.
  4. No. I don't have SP1 and wasn't aware of different DC modes. I just ran dcpromo on the server and after the upgrade and a reboot i chose the roles I wanted. Another sidepoint.... I d/l'd the ftp 7 upgrade, but haven't figured that out yet. There is alot of new stuff to learn, but admittedly, all of the changes are pretty cool. IIS 7 is radically different. Why did you move this as it is a server\client issue as opposed to a vista issue?
  5. I got a 2008 server up and going this weekend and joined a vista business client to it yesterday and lost the ability to right-click and see ANY properties. Control panel wouldn't open and when it did there wasn't anything there. I never could get the ability to right click and leave the domain, so I ended up doing a reinstall of vista. The vista client was a new dual core pc, 10000 rpm hdd, 2 gig memory, but at the time was overclocked from 2.2 to 2.93. I thought the overclocking caused the problem. Today I reinstalled vista, did all of the updates, and joined the domain with the client pc being a different name. I had exactly the same result exactly after joining the domain. In safe mode, I regained the ability to right click to get into the various properties. Both times I joined the domain as the domain admin and lost the ability to view any properties. It was like when a pc doesn't have enough memory to open an app like quickbooks. when you click on it, it just acts dumb as if nothing ever happened. Any ideas from anyone would be welcome. this is just for testing and learning the 2008 server and it didn't have anything done to it as far as tweaking... such as gp., etc. Seems kinda wierd to me. I have been using vista on all of my PC's since February, so I know Vista isn't misconfigured in any way, and these were both fresh installs.
  6. where did u d/l the file from? was it originally a dvd or multi cd's? vista w/ sp1 isn't available anywhere, except maybe msdn subscriptions. technet has cd d/l's. did it work before u vlited it?
  7. yep.... 2.8 gig. so can i use a erd disk and safely delete them? or will they repopulate like the dll cache of xp? or worse.... prolly hose my vista install?
  8. Does vista cache the setup files.... something like the i386 directory XP uses? I'm trying to free up some harddrive space and am not finding many disposable files and dir's. I asked before and didn't get much of an answer to this.... Is there anyway to move the hibefil.sys file to another partition???
  9. Frontpage has a backup and restore function. companyweb is a sharepoint database and all SBS OS's come with a legal copy of frontpage, that works perfect for moving the database between servers.... http://msmvps.com/blogs/cgross/archive/2006/03/31/88760.aspx Hope that helps. Should be alot of examples on google.
  10. I too would like to know.... I sell lots of dell optiplex and started selling the C2D's, but don't exactly know the diference. Even today, I ordered a C2D E4500 2.2 for a Shuttle PC (for personal use). I see lot's of these various optiplex's and they all seem the same to me. Today I set up a 3.2 Pentium D. I have to admit that the 1.6 that I had side by side seemed every bit as quick. I tend to sell Pentium D's, because 3.2 gHz sounds much faster than 1.6's. I've sold 3 1.6's lately though. A link to the differences would be nice. I've asked my Dell Rep and she doesn't know.
  11. How can i move the pagefile\hibernation file for my notebook from the c drive to the data drive (D)? I made my c partition a little bit to small and don't like it chewing up 2 gig of my hdd. I've disabled the pagefile, but use the standby function all of the time by just closing the lid. I know its a change needed in the registry, but all I see is a \hiberfil.sys value and I'm afraid to try something like modifying it to something like d:\hiberfil.sys. I also see something in the registry something like this... ?:\hiberfil.sys. I've already burned 3 of my VLK licenses from my technet subscription with experimenting and don't need\want to do another reinstall. TIA Jim
  12. dexter.inside.... i am so impressed with this guide. I can't wait to give it a try, as it is something I intend to master also. i'm sure it's a tremendous timesaver especially when used with driverpacks. Thanks for the major contribution!!! This guide should be stickied on the msfn.org homepage along side of server 2003 -> workstation guide, as it is equally as valuable. Jim <edit> what software do you use for your explorer? as in picture 1?
  13. I don't post much in here, but read alot and take what you say as gospel. I thought if the users profile was set not to save locally and the server location was setup right, it would always look to the same place on the server, regardless of which workstation they were on. The theory sounds good. Do you have any roaming profiles at all? or if it's a nightmare, maybe you don't do them at all?
  14. No, just a local ISP that as users business cards run out they have them printed with the new address... a government address that we have a semi local ISP host. I know all of those passwords as I administer them, so that isn't a problem either. Some users like outlook express and others like Outlook. I konw they should all be on outlook, but I tend to leave things the way they are as long as they work. I just need to implement roaming profiles and my work would still be cut down immensely. Just reluctant to change until I have somewhat mastered new ways. Cluberti.... do you use roaming profiles in any of your networks?
  15. It's a 24/7 facility and there are several nitetime users that occassionally I need to logon and change their email server or move a user to another PC. I don't carry a list with their passwords around and don't like staying late or working at nite to make occassional changes. When I need to do this, I just reset their password to a blank pw and let them know that if they can't login, try a blank pw and then I set the reminder to change pw at nect login. edit... Another thing, like today, I'll be installing a new PC where there are 6 users and having a working roaming profile would make my life easier. I can move their profiles to the server from the old PC, as described in the following link. http://www.windowsdevcenter.com/pub/a/wind...g_profiles.html I really, really need to try this, but I don't want to make myself alot more work while learning and transitioning the way things are now. Bottom line is, I have several floating users that I get tired of changing emails from PC to PC. I know how to move doc's to the server so that's not a problem, it's the rest of their profiles that I need to learn to make reside on the server. Incidently, this is a Sheriff's Dept. that I have an independent contractors contract with, so I like to keep my time minimal, In other words, I'm on call and don't work directly for the sheriff's dept. I also want to disable offline files so logoff's are quick. I know that you do that through GP, but haven't crossed that bridge yet, either. I would ultimately like this to be transparent to the users.
  16. How do network admins handle stuff like setting up emails for domain users without knowing their login password? What i do is reset their password to blank and let them know if it's ever different from what they had try a blank password and then reset again. I know there has to be an easier way. I support a network at a sheriffs dept where there is a lot of movement of users, and it't a pain to follow them around and make the changes, especially in the detension area. I should get brave and learn roaming profiles or folder redirection. Is there a way to do a runas if you don't know the users password and are the domain admin? TIA
  17. I tried from a different PC and got this error.... http://www.akronpc.net/error.jpg however I logged on as administrator with the correct password, I can remote desktop into it. I can post a screenie of the permissions on the ftp directory if anyone needs. This, BTW is longhorn server build 6001, but I have the same issues with 2003 server family, and have about half of my installs work. My router has the server in the dmz and it's the same router as I haved several working 2003 installs with over time. The firewall on the server is off for the time being. I don't think it's a firewall issue, because I can log in from a command prompt and upload and download files from just about anywhere. Again, about half of my installs work and I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong. It seems like to me, I used this dialog box and somehow got the administrator and pw in and the unchecked use anonymous connections. http://akronpc.net/account.jpg <edit> I can access, upload and download files with Filezilla, just not with a browser.
  18. Do you know what I need to do to be able to browse FTP with a browser, instead of via cmd.exe.
  19. I run into this every now and then on my own server installs... I can login to ftp site using command prompt with appropriate username and pw, however I can't login using a browser. I have reset all ie options to default. What happens is a authentification dialog box comes up and I put in my user name and PW. It says website found and the "can't display this page" While I'm asking, what is the difference between active and passive ftp? Further more.... How does one properly setup ftp, assuming that is it installed? I go to the IIS manager, make sure service is started, accept the default directory C:\inetpub\ftproot. set permissions to read and write. I have mixed luck, but can always make the cmd prompt method to achieve what I want.
  20. I just had this happen. So far it's costed me 2 of my technet volume license's. I thought I was gonna have to reinstall vista yet again and have it come inactivated and have to burn a 3rd. (Hopefully if the system works like it should, those should come available again in 6 months). What is the command to repair the mbr from vista? Also, how do you install the command console with vista?
  21. I have the R2 version on DVD and have tried unsucessfully to repack the SP1 version of SBS2003 and always get an error. I think it has to do with the bootsector (which points to CD1). I will look at the dvd structure and let you know. PM me and I can make put an empty DVD ISO (without the actual CD DATA)for you and you can try to repack it with SBS SP1. I have had the same question and get tired of feeding the server CD's.
  22. I want to implement this on a small domain as a test for a larger domain. Question is.... What is the difference between the Application data\local settings and the "stand alone" local settings directories? It seems according the the quote below and the diagram on the website, that \Application Data\Local Settings is the one without the users email data. quoting the above mentioned website... the main thing I want to be sure of is the email settings (either outlook or outlook express) gets in the right place on a server, so the roaming users can access all of their email. When I look in the directories of \Application dat\local settings the *.pst file or the *.dbx files aren't there, but they are in the local settings directory (the one not associated with Application data). My goals is that some users who share PC's always have access to their email, doc's, favorites and desktops on what ever PC they may logon to. A second and related question is most of the users have their own pcs, in which I don't want to implement folder redirection with (just yet). How do I accomplish that? I assume by putting the "roamers" into a different group, but I'm not exactly sure of how to do that. Again I want to test this on a small 5 PC domain, before I attempt it on the 35 PC domain w/ 50+ users. referencing the larger domain, I get tired of setting up the same emails on several PC's and "leave a copy of the mail on the server". In the case of Outlook express, they never have access to their sent mail, unless they are on the PC that they sent it on"
