Note to all the other MSFN members...if u spot any mistakes pls do let me know so i can fix this for old-man. i hvnt made an unattend cd in the last 2 months so im out of touch with things for a bit. thanks ok see for most ppl this should work simple and easy 1. slipstream sp2 2. create a folder called d:\xpcd (where d can be any drive with enuff space) 3. put ur slipstreamed xp source in this folder 4. create a folder called d:\xpcd\$oem$... this folder is going to be the main place for all ur customisations etc. 5. make all the appropriate changes in the winnt.sif file as listed in the unattend site. 6. now here comes the choice part. u hv a number of options: u can install all ur software at a number of stages which include: - a. svcpack.inf - 13 min mark - b. cmdlines.txt - 12 min mark - c. guirunonce - when windows first boots i would recommend u go for cmdlines.txt as it is one of the simplest ones, yet also b/c it allows u to catch ur mistakes early on, ie u dont hv to go through with the entire setup and wait for windows to boot the first time to spot the mistakes. but its upto u. ill continue my explanation using cmdlines.txt example 7. create a file called cmdlines.txt in d:\xpcd\$oem$ with the following contents: 8. now create another folder d:\xpcd\$oem$\$1\Install stuff here gets copied to ur c:\install during installation 9. in this new folder create the following: - a. file apps.cmd - b. file hotfixes.cmd - c. two folders called Apps and Hotfixes 10. in your apps folder, dump all the applications u want to install, eg msn, photoshop etc, and in the hotfixes fodler dump all the remaining post sp2 hotfixes 11. now set up ur apps.cmd as follows: for each application.... u hv to start it with the correct switches, and make sure its installation finishes until u move on to the next stage. And for most applications, ul hv to setup the executables properly which is explained quite well in the unattend site. so for eg for msn messenger http://unattended.msfn.org/xp/applications/msnmessenger.htm says u should extract the downloaded setupdl.exe file and extract the file msnmsgs.msi from the exe to d:\xpcd\$oem$\$1\install\Apps\Msn messenger\ you hv to do this for all the applications u wish to install. you can get the silent install swithces (like /qb) for each application in the forums. theres a sticky post titles unattend application switches. head there.at the end of the file..just typte 12. now set up ur hotfixes.cmd file as follows: for each hotfix file, determine whether it is type1 or type 2. the difference is explained quite well in the unattend site. when it comes to the unattend cd, they both hv different switches thts all so for a type 1 hotfix like Q******1.exe, you will add the following to ur file start /wait %systemdrive%\install\hotfixes\Q******1.exe /q /o /n /z ( pls double check the swithces from the unattend site) and for a type 2 hotfix like Q******2.exe u will add the following start /wait %systemdrive%\install\hotfixes\Q******2.exe /Q:A /R:N dont forget to add 'exit' at the end of the file 13. for the drivers adding part, i think alanoll is already guiding u. just follow his wise trail and you should be there in no time. hope this all works out. let me know if there are any problems

hehhe....looks like someone's in a grumpy mood eh its ok alanoll...i can understand uve had a rough day, wat wth all those autopatcher ppl wastin our time on <<spam>>...but give the poor guy a break....afterall...havnt we all looked for a shortcut in life sometime or the other (for me = all the time ) dont worry old-man. the site is quite simple. and let us know wt u need help with.... someone will always be there at MSFN cya

Save HOURS of time from making ur cd
dtmunir replied to shadowfla's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
ok....i agrree autopatcher may be a lil attractive for TOTAL noobs! but u hv to realise one thing: the HUGE size of it is self defeating. the point is, everytime microsoft releases a new patch or there is a new build of WMP or direct x, u'll hv to re-download the huge file in its entirety. u say theres a lite version. well i say this: wt if i want all the things the full version has in it. this MSFN unattend method lets u hv the best of both worlds. i can CHOOSE wt i want, and i dont hv to re-download EVERYTHING. only wt i want updated so there my 2 cents peace danish -
oh my god oh my god oh my GAAAAAAWD!!! this is AMAZING!!! where hv u been hiding nuhi....ur first release and WAT a classic! absolutely beautiful my man.... i havnt tried it, but belive me, the day my A levels end....im gettin right onto this thing!!! thumbs up to u pal!

hey everybody i was wondering if there was a way i could maybe organize my collection of over 3000+ family photos by assiging keywords to each photo (Right Click>Properties>SUmmary Tab). What i really need to know is HOW can i search for a specific picture using these keywords. I exerimented by giving 2 or 3 pics in my My pictures folder some keywords and then using windows built in search, as well as the cool software Effective File Search to try and get to these pictures using the keywords, but no luck! Any one have any ideas?

hehehe pretty detailed explanation justice thanks a lot...i knew i was stuck with this one..was just hopin that someone might hv tried somethin similar and maybe got it to work... oh well...i guess its back to the lab aagin danish

ok...i dont hv 2 computers... i hv only ONE computer with TWO windows sp installed on different partitions, ie C drive and D drive. i want to access the folder E:\my documents from the user 'Danish Munir on Winxp1 on C drive' as well as from 'Danish Munir on Winxp2 on D drive' but i dont want any other users on either OS to be able to access it. thanks a lot danish
-
ok...i hv the same question but with a bit of a twist for the pros here... this ought to get ur thinkin caps out heres my problem: i hv dual boot with 2 xp pros running on my system. i do this so that i can optimize one installation for gaming, while the other one i do my normal work ie surfing, chatting, programming, etc, as well for being able to access the NTFS drives for recovering data in case one installation gets messed up. Now there are some folders that i wish to restrict access to as this is a family computer. however i want to be able to access these folders from both installations by anyone particular user or group. ofcourse i tried by having the same user name is 'Danish' in both installations hoping that since the user name is same, windows would assign the same rights in both installations. However to my grief i discovered that the permissions are not assigned to the user name only, but to a string which includes the user name AS WELL as the computer name and a couple of random digits. so now i need to know how to make folders secure so that they can be accessed by the same user name in each windows installation, eg Danish on WinXP1 as well as Danish on winXP2 i hope you can understand my problem thanks danish

i second this question... ive been lookin for somethin like this as well.... or if someone cud teach me how to make context menu additions in somethin like VB6 or VB.net, tht wud be nice too thx danish
-
just a quick question....if im using this method, do i HAVE to leave the user info blank in the winnt.sif file? and can i use this ONLY for the user info, ie store the product key in the winnt.sif file, but only hv the user enter his own info thx
-
no, not really. Unless you can manage to achieve some MAJOR overbuurning on some superb combination of high quality cdrs and cd-writers. However, you can in SOME cases achieve wat you are looking for. The utility from microsoft called CDIMAGE, allows you to create images (*.bin) files, for burining on CDs, that CAN be larger than the normal prescribed 700 mb. How is this done? well, if your compilation (or the stuff u wanna burn) has mulitple instances of the same identical file, CDIMAGE will write that file only ONCE to the image, and in the remaining places it will post the address of this one file. For example, if you want to create a n-in-1 windows xp cd that containts window xp home, windows xp professional, windows xp mediacenter, etc, under normal circumstances one would think this is impossible, since each of these OS'es is 500+ mb in size. However if you use CDIMAGE, you can achieve this. Since each of these 'flavours' of XP have 60% of the files similar, CDIMAGE will write these common files to the Image only once, and you can fit in many windows onto one CD. if you need help regarding any specific software your tryin to burn, do let us know. hope i didnt get too complicated in my explanation ciaos

Gosh's Unattended Tips And Tricks
dtmunir replied to gosh's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
wooow...really cool jazkal. now i get wt ur doing here. this also answers another question ive been askin everyone around here for a month now: ive been tryin to find out wt was the earliest point i could eject the XP cd and hv the user put in the second install cd so tht stuff like ms office, photoshop etc could be installed at the cmdlines stage. now this solution of urs gives me an idea to hv the installation run from the harddisk which SHOULD allow me to take out the xp cd after the first restart immeadiately after text setup thanks amigos PS: if u hv any more tips on implementing this method of urs...im hungry. also if uve figured how to use in combo with gosh's reducing source method or GM's XPcreate, or both, i wud appreciate if u cud guide me how to do the same -

Hey guys been off this unattend forum for a couple of days (3 or 4 only) cuz my cousin was here from outta town. Hope i didnt miss much anyways i just wanted to clarify one thing. Any commands that are processed in cmdlines.txt, are they processed COMPLETELY before moving onto the next command. for example, if im calling two batch files in cmdlines.txt (batch1.cmd and batch2.cmd for example), then will batch1.cmd be COMPLETED entirely before batch2.cmd starts, or will the setup parse them one after the other without waiting for the first one to finish completely. what i want to know is weather i need to use something like: [commands] "start /wait .\install\batch1.cmd" "start /wait .\install\batch2.cmd" or can i do without the "start /wait" part? thx danish

Giving Your Windows Cosmetic Surgery
dtmunir replied to b0r3d's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
I tried following these procedures on an existing installation but the registry entry didn't seem to help. I made sure the file existet though. Have any of you been able to use this successfully? Thanks! Try this to change the wallpaper. Ive used it plenty of times and it definitely works: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 ;Set Custom Wallpaper [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop] "TileWallpaper"="0" "Wallpaper"="%windir%\\web\\wallpaper\\wallpaper.jpg" "Wallpaperstyle"="2" When you run the registry in your normal windows environment, you wont notice any change, ie the new wallpaper wont be implemented until you do 1 of the following things: 1) log off completely 2) restart 3) simply use winkey + L to use the switch user feature to goto the login screen, and login to your account again. (This is the shortest and my fav one) Hope it helps Danish
