  1. First, you need to work on the partitions. There is no use in creating a partition for the swap file, unless it is on a diffrent Physical drive. As for doing this all without reinstalling, I wouldnt recommend it. All registries get larger of time. and not all registry entries are stored correctly, for example all references to program files should be in a REG_SZ, but someting they are an encoded binary, like some settings. To move everything you will have to search through and replace every occurance of everything that you want to move. It would literally take you longet to follow the guide to create an unattended install using winnt.sif, and then reinstall than it would to move everything. Also it would be more stable, and isnt that what you are really looking for, organization and stability?
  2. sure you can get access to the SVI folder. Just make your user an authority user. Use a program called supershell http://p-nand-q.com/download/supershell.html and then you can get into it just like any other folder.
  3. try going back into the repair, and make sure you repair the MBR that way you might get to clean off bad data. As for it not restarting, that is microsoft, and you will need to hit them. As for the data, BartPE is great, allows good access, also can diagnose problems on the hard drive and has CD burning support to get data off. BartsPE also has some tools that might help you fix windows. Also check the boot.ini to make sure that it is pointing to the right spot. As for recovering the data from the Win31 drive, spend 30 bucks and make it external, then just plug it in. Getting XP recovered shoudnt be too bad, if recovery will run, you fix the MBR, and the hd has marked the bad sectors, then it should come back.
  4. Sorry, for the second post, but for issue two, the slow browsing, there could be a couple of reasons. You could have a bad master key. (Very unlikely) but it probable some process that is montoring IE. Like Norton or something that is trying to scan every incomming packet. Norton doesnt integrate into firefox / opera etc so it just has to ignore that information, but the integration peice with IE allows it to "listen" to the encrypted packets as they get decoded. That way it can prevent malware etc. This slows the process down considerably. Do you have some kind of product like norton running?
  5. This may seem weird, but I get this every now and then, not sure if you have tried this, but if i get something that comes in blank, I usually have to add http://www.* to what every it was and it works. Also I get this from users at the office, when squid caches the wrong information. Are you using a proxy server, or something?
  6. As a side note, IE has the functionality that if you hold down the ctrl key and then use the wheel section of the mouse, the text will get bigger or smaller. Since you said that it happened all of a sudden, you probably bumbed the ctrl key and then scrolled using the wheel, hence larger text. Hope this will help you avoid the problem in the future.
  7. Here is another thread, that has the answer and the registry key location. http://www.nibbleguru.com/probs/119/1775 good luck! NOTE: openoffice has the same functionallity as 97, maybe just go to that?
  8. check the properties of the shortcut, and check the working directory. If they dont work, just navigate to the directory with the program, right click drag to the desktop and click make short cut, then in a few minutes you will have all new working shortcuts. Also, if you want make jsut one shortcut, as mentioned, and then compare it to the one already there. See what is diffrent.
  9. Move up, it is just better. Also more customizible, and as was mentioned nlite works perfect for this scenario.
  10. Sure it can be sidabled. Just right click on the cd and go into the properties. then you have the pulldown, under music, pictures, etc just select an action to perform, "take no action" that way it may still scan but it wont do anyhting. Also searching on the forum for the reg tweak, to completely turn it off.
  11. For thoes of you who dont know what AST is then look here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/tec...esoverview.mspx As for the response, i am going to break down what you said. Just about anything can be disabled. When I do my installations I use a completely full installation (in case i need something) then I go through and turn everything off. If you dont mind registry editing go to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services and you can actually see everything that is started, even down to TCP/IP Stack, and can control it. some of the keys you cant directly access, but if you use a tool like supershell and edit the reg as authority, you can disable all the process that you REALLY dont need. As I said in the paragraph above, you can customize your operating system quite a bit, as for the brokn bit, microsoft is moving towards a "trusted computing" environment and this is part of the "progress" that they are making. take it with a grain of salt, if you really dont like it then you will have to move to some *nix, becuase that way you will be able to get the source and do whatever you want. The firewall and popup blocker can betaken care of in winnt.sif. The TCP Limit connections can be taken care of in a registry entry. DEP is now integrated, and cant be directly removed, unless you dont want to use SP2, also DEP will be required at some point in the future, not entirely sure when. Windows Security Center can also be disabled. Other items that control the gui can be shut off manually as well. Idont think that we will see much more customization, because microsoft is trying to code for the planet, but the "hacker" will figure out how to make the chnages that we really need. just take a look at the registry location above and you can start to get an idea of what can be done.In general, you can do what you want. It is just going to take time. as for the registry location mentioned above I am working on some documentation for what they all are in a default install and what happens if you mess with them. hope this helps.
  12. try http://www.memtest86.com/ you can download an iso, that is a bootable cd, and then run it over night and see if you get errors that are reproducable. if you get errors, then try once stick at at time, and see if it is just one stick. Then if one stick is still bad try it in another computer. If you still get bad then it is probably the memory, if you dont get bad in the second computer, then it is probably some kind of chipset thing.
  13. I personally use http://www.backup4all.com/. It isnt that expensive, only 45 and supports cd burning, network, full, mirror, diffrential, incremental etc. It is fully featured, and I have it on my entire network. I backup the dozen or so copmuters at my house alone using it. Very nice.
  14. you will need to reuse the 2003 resource kit to make the prober changes, then just call it like you regually would during runonce or somehting. http://unattended.msfn.org/intermediate/ap...03_advanced.htm
  15. We tried all the free guyes that you have mentioned. Including PDF Creator. We wanted to get away from adobe at the office so we tried all. All kinds of documents we sent at all. None worked completely. If you need general PDF capabilities then PDF Creator worked about the best, and is easy to use. If you start having problems with the creation on complicated doc etc, then go to kinkos and for a couple of cents, you could open your doc, save as pdf using acrobat professional, then email it to yourself, and quickl log out of their computers. Or just buy acobat. It flat out works the best. We moved the office back to it.
  16. It has only been mentioned once, but the stuff from Jetico, is awesome! http://www.jetico.com/jpfirewall.htm it is a little technical, and can redirect packets etc as well. It also has all the layers of support, by application, ip, port, time etc. It also takes up very little resources. It is worth the time you spend with it. and as a side note the complete setup and configuration can be automated, so that it can be made unattended. try it.
  17. This may seem a little extreme, but I just grabbed all the basics, and put it into a simple vbs script for you. it is attached below. It is not the most elegent, but it will show you how to do all this. Then if you want to have it available from the web, just write a simple cgi script that call this, graps the output and drops it in a html file. remember not to just run this from prompt you want to run it as cscript first.vbs otherwise you will get 100+ popup windows. I made this becuase I grab all this info, run it througha special algorythim and then that it how i generate install keys for one of my products. Guarantees that the key is unique. for some reason I cant add an attahment so here is the complete code. It will allow you to get just about anything that you want. strComputer = "." 18. This may seem weird, but is the option to delete existing partion still on the screen? IF it is you could probably just delete and then recreate, then XP would have to do at lease a quick format.
  19. You are correct I forgot, also remember after downloading it to put it into the $OEM$\$$\System32 directory so that it will be available from where ever you wish to call it. sorry.
  20. there are several, if you do a search in the registry under the key, HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services then you can do a search for anything with SQL, write down the sub keys that are titled, "Display NAme" and what they are set to start as, usually a reg_dword. Then change them or use the "sc" command to stop them. Another way, is to google site:www.microsoft.com sql and see if it is listed somewhere. Also check the documentation.
  21. check the system restore directory. usually this is where people are missing a couple of gig. also use tools that can read it, search for supershell on this forum,) i already posted it once) it will allow you to be nt/authority in a command prompt, then you can cd into any directory and do a dir /s to get the proper size.
  22. what is your goal, and you already posted this question in another thread, I answered the original question there. As for the gui, you cant directly, other than doing the system commands for a dos prompt. If you want to use a window then you need to create it in code, not someting you can do in three lines. You need to google it and there are lots of exmaples on how to create a window.
  23. but, if you really wanted to trick it you could just do a batch file that calls the exe inside another call to cmd. that way the exit from the programm closes the second cmd, laving the first cmd window open!
  24. this is actually a windows thing. If you open a dos prompt directly, then run your exe, the window wont close. If you double click on the exe from explorer then the window will close. This has to do with how the process open and closes in windows. If you want to make sure that a window will open when you double click, and not close then you need to move away from a command line process, or you have to have the pause.
  25. couple of questions 1. Which database are you trying to connect to, specifically? 2. How much programming experience so you have, you say familar with php, but what about the other languages? 3. How familar are you with threads? To have the lookup, it works best with threads. 4. Do you have to write any data back, or are you only going to be reading? 5. Do you want to do this by hand, or by IDE? 6. does it need to be multi-platform? I can refer you to several places that show you how to do this but you need to tell me the answers to the questions.
