From what I've seen, the 7900GT will be slightly faster than the 7800GTX 256MB, but priced much more aggressively.

Was hoping on keeping it secret a bit longer, but Ripken's screenshot revealed it all . Anyway, I'm using XP Embedded to create the project. For those who don't know, XP Embedded is basically the same as vanilla XP, with the only difference being that it's componentized. This means you can choose particular components such as DirectX or IE to be added to your configuration. Of course some of you may think that it's similar to nLite, but XP Embedded offers way more control, more than the typical user may want. And a sidenote, don't sweat too much over Ripken's rather high memory usage . It's still a beta and some nonessential services such as Indexing Service are included. @spazmire11 Firefox is supported, but I'm not sure about Steam though. There is no use for nLite, as XP Embedded offers way more control. Other .NET apps will work in future betas.

If you're just looking for the lowest price including shipping, try PriceGrabber (www.pricegrabber.com).

@Ripken204 Good job ! Really glad I chose a knowledgeable beta tester. Just messaged you on AIM, but you're apparently away...
-
I refreshed like 200 times and I still haven't gotten the new page :'(.
-
Unfortunately, the beta failed to start up due to suspected driver issues. Ripken, I'll have another beta out in a couple of weeks that will hopefully resolve the driver issues.

Windows "Monad" Shell is a new interactive command-line and task-based scripting technology in Windows that enables administrators to more efficiently and securely automate and control system management tasks on both desktops and servers. Which is the same as 8:5 . Just divide both numbers by two. Did you read my PM? And to everyone else, the first private beta is to be released on this coming Sunday. You will only be invited if you have contributed something meaningful to this project ("Wow! This project is great!" is not that meaningful).

I think it would look better without the "concept" text . And that horizontal ray would look better if the gradient was smoother.
-
@POW!! Which means you don't support the tweak . If you have any nonstandard resolution, where the width to height is greater than 4:3, then the tweak might work (Sofer's resolution is at a ratio of 8:5).
-
Fixed it . The BIOS update did the trick.
-
Ok, I've isolated the problem. Once when the CPU is installed, the thing won't power on. My processor is an Opteron 165. Surely a 450W power supply has enough power to feed it. What am I doing wrong? EDIT: Could it be a BIOS problem? My motherboard doesn't even support dual-core (or Opteron) without a revision. Would that cause it to not power up the system?
-
I'm really confused as to what I've done wrong now. I removed the processor, which was the last thing connected to the motherboard, and for testing's sake, I tried the power one last time and voila! It powered up. Might be what ironman suggested...my power cable might've been in the wrong position. Anyway just happy to find out my motherboard isn't faulty .
-
Well I'm not even going to bother posting progress on my setup anymore . I'm just cursed when it comes to hardware...
-
@Sofer Can you please take a picture of your monitor (before and after shots)? I didn't think anyone had a monitor that supported this feature . The tweak is undocumented; you can search Google and Microsoft for it and you won't find it. Only way to find out such tweaks is if you (or a friend) have access to the Windows source code.

So finally all of my computer parts arrived, and I'm thinking this is it. I assemble everything and click the power button...and nothing starts up. Getting a little irritated, I suspect it's one of my devices, so I unplug everything but the processor and fans and try again. Still nothing. Now I'm suspecting it's the power cable or power supply. Switch both of those and still nothing!!! I'm starting to think I got another DOA motherboard, but I'm hoping that's not the case . Is there anything I might've forgotten (Yes, I checked to see that the power cord was plugged in )?
-
@Gdogg Actually this tweak is built into Windows, it's not a driver tweak. And as far as I know, no one outside of Microsoft knows about this tweak and many others I'm playing with . @POW!! Nothing really different from using a normal install so far. @Sofer I used Windows Explorer because it's easier to test with. That's partly why my install's so huge. Once I replace Explorer with Command Prompt, the overall size of the build will experience a drastic drop .
-
@Ripken204 I don't think it'll have any effect other than blurring your monitor, unless you have a high DPI (dots per inch) monitor.
-
Progress slower than I expected over the last two days. But check the first post for a surprise . Also, I wanted to give you guys an example of the types of tweaks I'm working on. There is absolutely no documentation on this, but yet this tweak works . To remove the tweak, open the file in Notepad and replace the first entry with "DoubleDpi"=-. doubledpi.reg

Well the move to 90nm reduces the cost and increases performance, so I don't see how the 7800's can compete.

Source: http://theinquirer.net/?article=29799 Well guess my card's already obsolete .
-
@Lightbringer- Nope . Expect it to be released around the time Blackcomb comes out.
-
@Wicket20519 Nope. But there will be a benchmarking edition available . I was looking at the 4GHz overclock on the FX-57 by k|ngp|n (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=85695) and noticed his OS wasn't tweaked. Of course, many people started recommending different tweaks like "EnableSuperFetch" and a bunch of other tweaks that didn't work, so naturally I wanted to create something for benchmarkers who just need a few extra milliseconds .

@Nakatomi2010 There will be from me .

I thought it was just "Ludicrous" not "Ludicrous kill".
