Never knew that Nvidia made media players...
-
Yeah, lots of changes to the forum lately...some of them that aren't so good...
-
Gdogg has mention several times that his project goal is different then mine. Can you explain?
-
I think it's useful in places like the Funny Farm, where you can rate jokes and such. But usually in the Windows XP forums, there's no use for it...since no one really asks stupid questions. Anyway, seems the admins agree with me .

Windows Desktop Search (WDS) helps you find virtually anything on your PC or your networked drives including e-mail messages, calendar appointments, documents, and more. Searching your computer is now as fast and easy as searching the Web. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. I'd suggest keeping multiple copies on different media. That way, if the backup is unreadable in a decade or so, another backup might still exist.

I don't think it's a good idea. So far, I haven't really seen it put to good use. I've seen many topics with a 1-star rating when it contained useful information, probably because a single person rated it and didn't have the technical background to grasp the usefulness of the information. I've also seen even more 5-star topics that had the poster rate it, simply because it was his/her's topic. More recently, I've noticed many people who supported my competitor's project (MicroWinX) rate my project down before they even read everything. Therefore, I'm requesting that either Martin L or xper remove this "feature".

No he means progman.exe. I think that's a 16-bit app that dates back to Windows 3.0 . Dunno why so many people like it...If you want to use it as a shell, just edit the Registry. I can't support it because it's 16-bit and by default, GE won't have 16-bit support (we're already moving on to 64-bit ).

Interesting. While we're on the subject of data loss, I'd like to stress the importance of backing up. Twice I've lost about 40GB of important files accidentally. One time, I foolishly deleted the wrong partition in Windows Setup, and only realized my mistake when the Windows files had overwritten any chance of recovery.

@Spazmire11 They are all supported. I just want to know which one should be default.
-
@Ripken204 You mean shell? Available choices are Task Manager, Windows Explorer, and Command Prompt.
-
First release as in the first beta? That's already been released . If you mean the first public beta...that might be a month from now. The final product might take about a week or so from the public beta, depending on the amount of bugs. And a new poll. What shell does everyone want?
-
@Suryad Already posted on the front page . Nothing's really changed in terms of features.
-
@Gdogg I've checked that out already. But my philosophy is that if you want a minimalistic system, you shouldn't go top down. The right way to go is bottom up .
-
@Gdogg What I don't understand is why everyone comes along and overexaggerates the disadvantages of this project, while omitting all the good stuff . The download is not 3.5GB. It's closer to 1GB. The user won't need to build and rebuild images...I've done that for them. Dependency checks don't take an hour. Takes more like 5 minutes on a slow computer. Something around 2 minutes on a fast computer. Command prompt isn't the only option in XPE, you know . And the reason why everyone gets annoyed when anyone posts negative comments on the project is because they're usually misinformed and haven't read the last twenty pages of information. Interesting reads: http://www.bsquare.com/licenses/embeddedos...nxpembedpro.asp http://msdn.microsoft.com/embedded/howtobuy/default.aspx The development tools cost nearly a grand...but most users of GE won't need to use the development tools for longer than the evaluation period. As Bezalel mentioned, the cost for the runtime is $90.

@Jeremy Companies do not decide the future of computing on their own; they listen to feedback from the users. And these companies don't just hire anyone. They hire people who are enthusiastic about technology: the very people who might've benched 20,000 on 3DMark06 . I don't want this thread to turn into a flaming contest, so I'll leave it to you to decide whether this project is worth your time or not.

@Jeremy Have you ever seen the insane overclocks at XtremeSystems? They spend hours tweaking their hardware, even resorting to building their own cooling systems when commercial products have reached their utmost limits. Why do they strive for such perfection? For breaking world records? For fame? I believe it's neither; it's the need to explore the possibilities, the need to push the boundaries ever further. These very people are the ones who got us to where we are now, and will get us to where we will be in the future. To answer your more technical questions, I'm trying my best to make GE a more well-rounded OS; that is, to make it more than just a gaming OS. And I doubt you've read my previous posts about using XPE, else you would be more enlightened than to claim that I'll distribute an ISO. The download file won't even exceed 5MB. DLL's also won't be much of a problem; you're taking what I've done with Mindows and expecting GE to be similar. Without even seeing the beta yet, you're making claims about what GE's capable of. Now about your system. Of course you can still run games, even with bandwidth-hogging applications on, but if you've always played like that, you'd never notice the lag. Assuming you have a good firewall, which filters all incoming and outgoing traffic and actually inspects the contents of the packets, that's probably 20% of your bandwidth down the drain. Throw in Trillian and your other programs, and you don't even know what you've been missing out on . With GE, I promise to create a more secure OS that doesn't rely on such crude mechanisms as firewalls. There's many benefits that will hopefully surface soon, but in the meantime, best thing I can tell you is to be patient.

Not sure if this would work but...get into the Recovery Console, delete wpa.dbl and then rename wpa.bak to wpa.dbl. You might have to reactivate.
-
So umm...why hasn't Beta 3 been released yet?
-
I'd rather prefer that he doesn't. The first beta has not yet been optimized yet, and the poor benchmark results might give you a false impression of what GE is capable of.
-
I've been using Windows for nearly a decade and I didn't know both of these tips .
-
I'd like to note that NVIDIA video drivers do work, but are currently limited to FX-generation chips and below.
-
That would cut into their profits. The 7800GT is ~$100 less than the 7800GTX. Since the 7900GT is equivalent in price to it, and will cost $300, then the 7800GT will cost only $200!!! And the 6800GS costs $100 less than the 7800GT, so it's new price is only $100. And so on...
-
All chips aren't made equally .
-
Well I'm sure there's...uhh..."methods" that some individuals may find to solve that problem .
