  1. A friend asked me to reinstall windows for him, so i did, but it appears that neither nForce audio drivers (4.62), neither realtek ac97 drivers work fine (tested old version in manufacturers site and new WDM_A406). Only when i set maximum volume on pc and speakers i can hear some sound (and it is barely audible). Any ideas? Motherboard: Abit KN8 Ultra Chipset: nForce 4 Ultra AMD Edit: It was hardware problems. Thread can be locked.
  2. Try AnyDVD HD. I heard that it lets you to play HD DVDs without compatible harware. Haven't tested it, but many people say that it works.
  3. You can use xCHM to view chm files without internet explorer's core.
  4. Gimpshop: http://gimpshop.blogspot.com/ It isn't Linux only, it has Windows, Mac and Solaris versions.
  5. Which distro installs all programs sources by default? Sure some distros include kernel sources in /usr/src but it doesn't take much space.
  6. I've tried again now and adding trusted site works normaly! But windowsupdate still doesn't allow to update. So i've tried updating with other administrator account and everything worked fine
  7. Well i can't set security level below High in IE. I have nod32 running, i've just scanned my pc with ad-aware and spybot and they haven't found anything (except few tracking cookies) :/ I don't use IE for browsing, but i need it for windowsupdate.
  8. When i enter any address i get this error: Maybe there's workaround or fix for this bug?
  9. You may need to replace pidgen.dll file from original cd (because your pirated version may be VLK not retail and they have different cd keys), so copy PIDGEN.DLL from your original cd's I386 folder to your windows\system32 folder.
  10. After reading some information at this page i believe that IE engine can be replaced by other browser's engine. I've tried this tool, but app still use IE engine (i've installed mozilla and activex control). Mozilla activex is used to show web pages on linux through wine, so why this can't be used in windows? I've tried installing ReactOS special executable which is used in wine after removing IE engine and apps are not working Maybe someone succeed repacing IE engine and can help me
  11. I use both OS'es, but i would never create anti-ms site, because it's your choise which OS you want to use. I think Windows advantages are: 1. Compactibility with devices (lots of drivers) (All my devices are working properly on linux...). 2. Lot's of games for windows only (Cedega can run some games on linux (like battlefield2, world of warcraft and etc. if you want to know more visit they'r website). Wine and cross over office can run many windows apps too like Photoshop ). Linux/Unix advantages: 1. Open-source (if i don't like something, i can always change it) (That doesn't mean there's no open source apps for windows, but almost everything in linux is opensource). 2. It has great apps (i don't know why some people thinks that there's no good apps for linux) witch runs faster (you can argue with me, but simple console app worked twise faster than in windows) (There's 64bit windows versions, but there are separate linux distros whitch are optimized for different platforms). 3. Cool package management systems (apt-get, emerge, etc) whitch makes software installing much easier than in windows (I don't think microsoft will ever do such thing for windows, but it would be cool ). Windows disadvantages: 1. Registry and other trash. This thing slows windows and i need to reinstall it again (don't say you never had to reinstall windows because it began to run slow or etc.). 2. Mallware (spyware, adware, viruses, trojans...) tons of these. Some programs like kazaa, dap, flashget installs spyware. 3. Stability. Server running windows hung every day, but when we switched it to linux there's no problems. Linux disadvantages: 1. Lack of 3D games. 2. Programs like wine, cedega, cross over office won't run every windows app or game. 3. Ease of use depends on distribution. You can have nice gui mandriva installer and surf the web without many problems. 4. You still need to know some bash commands. If your device is not automaticaly mounted you need to use command line to do that, or edit fstab to suit your needs 5. Too much distros, but i've chosen mine.
  12. Nevermind. Moderators delete this thread.
  13. You talk about user-friendlyness. Well take for example Mandarake distribution. Very easy to install (next next...) installation can even partition your hard drive automaticaly. Most linux distros has it's package management tools so you don't need even to hit next tree times to install or uninstall. I currently use arch linux (not that user friendly) but if i want to install some app i type "pacman -S application_name" (easier than typing url and pressing download) and it is installed automaticaly. Want to uninstall? "pacman -R application_name". Want to update whole system? "pacman -Syu" (windowsupdate updates only windows but not other apps). Another thing is about desktop environments. There are lot of them, but the best looking is KDE which has a lot of own programs. Sample kde screenshot: I see only one negative side: many commercial games is not designed for linux.
