  1. Thanks for the info i find it interesting that everthing including the server still go through the router yes it is slow but keep in mind for 10 years ago that was a very solid machine and its been running non stop without a hitch for those 10 years so props to IBM on that one. i dont need it to be a domain controller so i guess just file server (will that be enough for sharepoint) and internet sharring. each computer already has its own printer and internal mail seems useless to me at this stage. on the router would i declare the server to be "on the net" so i can make vpn connections?
  2. Hey guys I have an old computer circa windows 95 a pentium I 200 Mhz 128mb RAM a solid 2Megs of video memory Instead of throwing it out I decided its time to learn about servers. I installed windows server 2003 on it and would like to run it as a server at my home for internet sharing, file hosting and windows sharepoint. This is my first attempt with a server but i am fairly knowledgable with computers so this shouldnt be too hard for me. If anyone could recommend a place to start reading material on how to accomplish what i want done please let me know. my first goals are to know what plugs into what? meaning i currently have a cable modem connected to my wireless router which connects the 3 computers in my house. how would i make the server act as the dhcp instead of the router and where would i plug the router? into the server or remain with the modem? How do i create a domain? Any help would be appreciated thanks, Josh
  3. Hey guys As you know office 2003 has rights management tools to keep your files protected. HOWEVER if you give someone the right to "change" a document, which you need to do if they are to work on it, they can also copy paste it to another unprotected document. I havent found a way to use IRM to stop copying without giving the user on read access which would defeat the point. I'm thinking maybe a VBA script that would remouve the copy and cut features from the document entirely. Can this be done? and how can I force the user to run the script when opening the document? Thanks, Josh
  4. no it was norton client security Now im trying to get internet sharing to work which is provong to be equally bothersome i get my internet through my wireless card and want to share it through my ethernet card as soon as i try to enable internet sharing all hell breaks lose and reconfigures the ip's and nothing works
  5. unfortunately i know windows often needs a swift kick. I put both computers on a workgroup called TRY and then restarted each Each computer can only see itself and typing it into the adress bar doesnt work This is starting to get really annoying Thanks for the last post I disapled my firewall and then it worked enabled my firewall and it still works stupid thing is i configured the firewall for the computers IP and subnet mask. Thanks for the help everyone
  6. ok i got it to connect i went into the properties of the NIC and manually entered my ip adress Now both computers say connected but i still can't see the other computer in my network places. I actualy did this before you wrtoe that my computer is already on a network called MShome should i create a new workgroup for the second computer or can i join it to MShome?
  7. I connected the 2 now via the crossover cable the second compueter gives IP 169.254.229.45 and is connected while my computer has the limited or no connection message. I'm not sure what to do at this point
  8. thanks i'll go buy the crossover cable now With that the connection should be fairly automatic ?

  11. Hey guys I'm doing some work on a friends computer. I have a KVM switch so i can share my moniter mouse and keyboard. I also plugged a lan cable between the two computers. My computer is running XP pro and his XP home. My computer is on a wireless network and i want to connect his computer to mine and share my internet connection. When i plug in the lan cable, i get the message on both computers that a cable is unplugged when it isnt. How can i succesfully link the 2 computers? Thanks Josh
  12. i actually found a way out of it and im surprised it worked i logged on in safe mode and then logged off and used ctrl + alt +del to get the classic logon and from there admin account worked even though it was disabled. then i unclicked disable account and voila Happy it worked or i would have been screwed
  13. I made a foolish mistake The user account on my machine is set to power user and the administrator account is disabled. Now i can't install any software or basically do anything i'd want to do. i can't access "control userpasswords2" or use system restore to try and revert the settings. Is there any way for me to re-enable the administrator account? or to upgrade my power user to an administrator? Thanks Josh
  14. I'd love to post the HWID Where can i find this exactly?
  15. I get the same error on a Dell 8500 and in the BIOS i have no option to disable onboard audio Any ideas?
  16. I took a lok at google and whats written on msfn but i have the latest BIOS A06 and in the BIOS i have no option to disable onboard audio
  17. I've done many many installs without a problem thus far. Now I'm using a Dell 8500 Laptop with BIOS A06. When setup reaches the 35 minute mark, I get the following message. I have no idea what it means. I have 60 gigs free disk space and it's the only partirion. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks Josh
  18. i have it and i love it and remember if your going to college you qualify for academic pricing and its something like 49.99 i use it to its full potential, i record phone conversations and take notes on the calls. One interesting note is that if you also use information rights management on documents, one note is unable to copy an protected material even screen clipings let me know if you have any questions about it
  19. First of all i would like to say that i have no intention or ability to hack anything. I'm fairly uninformed when it comes to the inner workings of a computer. How exactly does a hacker get into a system and what do they see when they are there? do they have the same experiance as if they were logged into windows or do they just have access to files? How does something like a internet explorer bug give a hacker access to your system? I'm asking this because I have no clue and would feel better if i wasnt so blind about it. Thanks
  20. hey guys I have a computer thats a few years old, dell dimension 4400, P4 2Ghz with a intel 845 chipset. Thats the only information i can find about the motherboard. I'm planning to do a fresh install and would like to upgrade the BIOS as well. The latest dell bios is version A06 from 2002 but intel has newer versions but i can't seen to find which one i need as there seems to be several models of the 845 board. How can i find which model i have? Also what would be the benifit of upgrading it? Thanks
  21. this looks really interesting to me and sorry if this is a noob question but what is the benifit of running the server as a workstation?
  22. I had an idea but I don't know how it would be done In the printer preferences there is a list of ports that the printer can use and its on port: usb001. also on the list is my office image writter and adobe pdf printer. it says to select all availible ports and it will use the first availible. Is there a way i can set it to print to all availible and that way it would print to the printer and to pdf? That would be cool. I'm really surprised that i havent found anything about this. I would think that many people would be interested in knowing what their printers are used for.
  23. Hey guys I have my taskbar on two rows because i need the room to have many open applications and a large quick launch bar. The start button is always on the top row no matter how big you make the taskbar. Is there any way to move it to the bottom so it will always be at the bottom left or to grow it so that it fills more than one row? It's really annoying to keep selecting whats below the start button. thanks josh
  24. @Marsden If you read the first post you would notice that the group policy editor was the topic of this post. I know what it does but it doesn't seem to work all the time. If i set the GP to allow calc.exe to work i can then rename any executable file to calc.exe and it will run. It also won't stop people from installing non msi based installers from the web. We are looking for a solution to compliment the group policy.
