No, it's not related to login verification where you would receive an e-mail with a link to click on in order to verify it's you. Nothing like that at all. It's about the username and password fields when you're logged out and you want to log back in. You could previously either type in your e-mail address or your display name as the username. While now you can only type in your e-mail address as your username, but not the other. That's the change that was made. I do have a static IP, or public IP rather, and I use a router. I have several of both actually. It's not so difficult to change my public (and static) IP address, but I would have to give my ISP a call. Not as easy as release and renew, but it's workable. I have some public services running from my home. I always figured why only use one half of the Internet service I pay for, for accessing external resources, when I can do the opposite and serve up resources for others to use, including myself. But running servers and services from your home is becoming less common these days. Most people don't know how to do that. But even the techies shy away due to the risks involved by exposing your network to the Internet. But Internet would not be Internet without at least two interconnected networks. The Internet landscape has changed for the worse over the years though, with dark forces lurking around every node. So I do understand people who are perfectly happy with putting their Internet connection devices behind a CGNAT and then host their services with a professional server/VPS provider. (I do that too.)

Where do I find miscellaneous topics? Isn't that in General Discussion? It's not a big deal. Assuming of course you know how to update your records in your password manager. I just find that interesting. Usually, like 95% of all websites with login will use your e-mail address as the username. But then you have discussion boards or web forums (I prefer this term) where you have a username, and a display name, and with some weird website you may even have a nickname. I have been foruming for a long time, and it's only in more recent years that I have come across the term "displaly name". The idea here is to allow a user to easily change the most prominently displayed name in discussions and on the profile page. Without having to beg, or ask, or request it from administrators. I know the pains and implications of username changes. Depending on the software, some are more workable than others. But usually, if it can't be done easily, or if it means breaking changes, you're left with creating a new account with a new username, and then if possible, merge the two accounts by moving the old topics and comments from the old username to the new one. Typically, this is too much work, so it's never done or it's done but very unwillingly. So this is the gap that the idea behind a "display name" fills. Also, you can have two different usernames with the same display name, without any conflict. Other than possibly impersonation, but that requires a little more than just two users having the same display name. As for username, this is typically your e-mail address. But some forum software can allow both a username and a display name to be used for login. Usernames have to be unique, but display names don't. This is part of the reason why e-mail addresses are typically used as usernames. The second part being the ability to reset a password and receive a recovery link by e-mail. However, this is also a risk, if someone gains access to your e-mail account. That's also something to consider, for users and for system designers. In case of MSFN, you have to have a unique "display name". This automatically disqualifies it as such. It's not a display name. It's a username. I'm not sure how changing the login to e-mail address will stop the spam any more than using a "display name" (username in fact). Thankfully we have HTTPS now, otherwise, every login or login attempt you make could be intercepted and your e-mail address revealed and sold to spammers on the black market. That would mean more spam for you personally, maybe not so much for the forum itself. This forum is using Invision Power Board for software, is it not? As for "nickname", the only places I have come across that will require or hand out all three types of identifiers (username, display name, and nickname) are sites that for various reasons use more than one piece of software. They could be having comments on blog sections or chats that use nicknames (WordPress I think), and then the remaining two (username and display name) on the site's forum.

I was previously able to log in with my "display name" and password. But now all of a sudden, when I try to log in, I see this: "Please enter an email address." I can still log in, but I have to use e-mail address and password. Is there any particular reason for this change? Are our e-mail addresses in fact stored as usernames in the database? I see there's a topic for requesting a username change for manual handling and approval. A "display name" change should technically not require manual handling, and be editable at will, within profile settings or account settings. I think you will find this kind of setup on sites like Disqus and many other sites that have a "display name". I believe all Discourse based forums have this, and they may have even coined the term "display name". Are our display names on MSFN in fact our usernames? Usernames are required to be unique. That's not a requirement for what other sites refer to as display names.

Yes, indeed. That is the most likely explanation, as I was using a VPN connection at the time. Sorry for the very late reply! The good news is, the link works today. No less than one and a half months later! I can see quite clearly now that MSFN stands for: Microsoft Software Forum Network. Thank you @NojusK for the link. Also, I found this poll of the day (2003-03-29) quite satisfactory: I think I would have cast my vote on the first option. Even in today's mobile world, I am still more reliant on my computer than on my mobile phone, even though I have a smart phone that's technically a palm-sized computer and much more capable than the computer I had in the early 2000s. It could be. But I think that was a different kind of issue with the forum itself, I was logged out due to inactivity or taking too long to finish my post, and no draft was saved. It happens from time to time. It's one of those moments where you have to retype everything, I think we have all experienced it. I usually do it all over again. But in this instance, I was unable to recollect my thoughts properly and decided not to retype and repost. It did appear as saved at first. I always refresh the page to check my post. But that may have been a cached version or something. I was alluding to Lick's Intergalactic Computer Network, or IGCN for short, the broader network. But sure, Metaverse Society For Nurds, or MSFN works too.

Thanks! Sadly, I think that's not compatible with this Pentium III processor. But it might be a perfect fit for someone with a more powerful processor. There are two ways to look at it. You either look for a new browser to support web browsing on Windows XP, or you look for a new web browser to support web browsing on your old processor/hardware. (It's both in my case.)

Wait... what is Thorium? A chemical element? This! It's the same on this old Fujitsu. Actually, I turned my pockets inside out and found another 67 MHz! It runs at 800 MHz. I think I remembered 733 MHz from reading a data sheet. It may have been for a different configuration of the same model. Or I may have confused it with my 733 MHz Pentium III that I have in a desktop PC. Will they immediately block you if they see you have Windows XP? Or they only use that for statistics? I think you have a typo here. It should be rv and not "rw". Small detail, but I doubt it will accept it or read it correctly if it says "rw" and "rv" is expected. I'm just guessing. I have not tried it. But does it have to be a valid Firefox version? And do I have to change it for both browsers if I have more than one in the string, like changing "Firefox/52.0 PaleMoon/27.10.0" to "Firefox/48.0 PaleMoon/7.7.7"? I'm using 7.7.7 arbitrarily here (God mode) because I don't know what to set it to. I will have to look it up if it has to be a valid number. This one is not compatible with my New Moon 27.10.0? It says on the website that it's compatible with "Pale Moon 29.0 to 31.*". This is for version 1.7.2, last updated December 25, 2022. So it's not a good recommendation, I guess? But I do understand and appreciate the suggestion. I will have to find an alternative. I have used one such extension for Firefox before. I still have it on my main PC. It's called User-Agent Switcher (by Linder). I don't use it unless I have to. I don't like to mess with user agent strings to be honest. They don't make sense to me. As I have pointed out here already. I mean if and when done so manually. So I agree that using an extension is a sensible thing to do. One fun way I used the extension in Firefox, back in 2015 and 2016, was to trick Microsoft into presenting me with the option to download the generic Windows 10 ISO files, by making them think I'm using a Linux or Mac computer, and therefore cannot use their Media Creation Tool. But it's such a perversion from Microsoft... as a Windows user, they make me use their tool to create what is essentially a custom ISO, and not the original and verifiable ISO file. But yeah, that's one very good use case for a user agent switcher.

How low is low enough for Google? Of all the browsers I have installed, only Firefox 45 didn't have that string. I have installed Basilisk/Serpent 52.9.0, Pale Moon (New Moon) 27.10.0, K-Meleon 76.5.4, and Firefox 45.9.34. They all come with overrides already in place? Except for Firefox? Here are my current user agent override settings for Google and Google Videos (the second override). SERPENT 52.9.0 general.useragent.override.google.com;Mozilla/5.0 (%OS_SLICE% rv:71.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/71.0 Basilisk/52.9.0 general.useragent.override.googlevideos.com;Mozilla/5.0 (%OS_SLICE% rv:38.9) Gecko/20100101 Goanna/4.8 Firefox/38.9 Basilisk/52.9.0 NEW MOON 27.10.0 general.useragent.override.google.com;Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:52.0) Gecko/20010101 Goanna/3.6 Firefox/52.0 PaleMoon/27.10.0 general.useragent.override.googlevideos.com;Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:52.0) Gecko/20010101 Goanna/3.6 Firefox/52.0 PaleMoon/27.10.0 K-MELEON 76.5.4 general.useragent.override.google.com;Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:52.0) Gecko/20010101 Goanna/3.6 Firefox/52.0 PaleMoon/27.9 general.useragent.override.googlevideos.com;Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:52.0) Gecko/20010101 Goanna/3.6 Firefox/52.0 PaleMoon/27.9 FIREFOX 45.9.34 general.useragent.override N/A (none!!) --- general.useragent.compatMode.firefox;false general.useragent.locale;en-US general.useragent.site_specific_overrides;true What number or numbers do I need to change? I'm not familiar with user agent strings. So if I look at New Moon for example, "Gecko/20010101 Goanna/3.6" indicates browser engine? Why are there two of them in the same string? Goanna is based on Gecko. So why not just say Goanna? Or just Gecko? Is this number truthful? Is it really version 3.6? Is "20010101" a date? Why 1 Jan 2001? Similarly, "Firefox/52.0 PaleMoon/27.10.0" indicates browser version? Why are there two of them in the same string? Yes, Pale Moon is based on Firefox. So why not just say Pale Moon? Or just Firefox? Is this some kind of fallback thing? What number do I have to change then? And to what, for Google to accept it? Test and see, trial and error? What is "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:52.0)" saying? What is "Mozilla/5.0"? I see OS is Windows and it's NT version 6.1, and it's 64 bit. Revision 52.0 is another indicator of browser version.

Not! - it does not work. Each time I start it, I get the same error twice. mypal.exe - Programfel Det gick inte att initiera programmet korrekt (0xc000001d). Klicka på OK för att avsluta programmet. It's a critical error and execution comes to a halt. The message says it could not initiate the program correctly, and I am only offered the option to click OK to quit the program. I extracted the Zip file on the target laptop and then also on my main desktop PC, just to ensure file integrity. That was not the cause of the error. Yes. These two worked correctly, palemoon-28.10.7a1.win32 (XP mod with SSE optimization), basilisk52-g4.8.win32 (XP mod (for IA-32)). I'm not sure if one is faster than the other. They were about the same in terms of performance. After Mypal failed, I tried Basilisk first and then Pale Moon (New Moon?). One thing I noticed is that Google Search is quicker on Basilisk, and that's because a more simple, legacy style Google Search interface is presented in Basilisk than in Pale Moon. Is it possible to manually switch interface on Google.com to the legacy interface? That's less intense for this PC. With only 733 MHz and 256 MB, there is not much performance to talk about. Everything was very slow. Paging file usage in Task Manager was often above 300 MB. On an old and tired IDE HDD. So you can imagine. Thanks. I will install this too as a fallback option. The reason I asked for a working link is because I wanted an official link from Mozilla. But I could not find one now, 5 years later. The Internet Archive link is as official as it will get. Unfortunately. I still wonder why Mozilla never released this version if it was the last version for XP. It will remain a mystery. I have now downloaded it from both Sdfox7 and from Internet Archive, and I have checked them both. The files are identical and clean. Nothing personal Stephen! @sdfox7 I am always very cautious about downloading files from unknown sources. Thank you for hosting the file for reference and for posterity. I still think Mozilla should be the number one source and hosting this file. But for whatever reason, they don't.

I should have mentioned, I have a Pentium III processor with SSE and MMX running at 733 MHz. Is this good enough? I am test running Mypal 68.14.3b now in a VM, and I want to know, how do I register it as default browser? It doesn't come with an installer like some other browsers. Is this the right download page? https://rtfreesoft.blogspot.com/search/label/browser Under "NM28XP build" is the stable release? It too has a "Win32 SSE" release? The "Win32 IA32" release is not for Pentium III? This is for even older processors? I should get the regular "Win32" if I don't want SSE? palemoon-28.10.7a1.win32-git-20240720-d849524bd-uxp-8fbf81bb8a-xpmod.7z palemoon-28.10.7a1.win32-git-20240720-d849524bd-uxp-8fbf81bb8a-xpmod-sse.7z palemoon-28.10.7a1.win32-git-20240720-d849524bd-uxp-8fbf81bb8a-xpmod-ia32.7z These three are based on the Pale Moon browser? Am I right? And this is what it means to be "New Moon"? basilisk52-g4.8.win32-git-20240720-3219d2d-uxp-8fbf81bb8a-xpmod-ia32.7z This one is based on the Basilisk browser? And it's for processors older than Pentium III? I'm not quite sure of the difference between the designation "Win32" and "Win32 IA32". They are both indicative of 32-bit processor. Or rather, the first indicates 32-bit version of Windows, and the second indicates 32-bit Intel processor.

And 5 years later... Can this still be downloaded from Mozilla? Does anyone have a working link? The download CDN and archive links in this post are now dead. Surprisingly, the Mozilla FTP link for Thunderbird 52.9.1 is still alive. What's the difference between 52.9.0 and 52.9.1 anyway? And why wasn't 52.9.1 officially released by Mozilla if it's the last one? I see @luweitest looked at this very thing, but I didn't understand his conclusion. Something to do with SSL and SHA1? But what about it? If not Firefox 52.9.0 (or 52.9.1), then what do you suggest I install on a reinstalled Windows XP in 2024? Mypal?

How to create a simple volume in an extended partition using DiskPart?
Hackerman replied to Hackerman's topic in Windows XP
I got this. DISKPART> list part Partitionsnr. Typ Storlek Start ------------- ---------------- ------- ------- Partition 1 Primär 10 GB 32 KB Partition 2 Utökad 10 GB 10 GB DISKPART> sel part 2 Partition 2 är nu den valda partitionen. DISKPART> create partition logical Den angivna partitionen har skapats. DISKPART> list part Partitionsnr. Typ Storlek Start ------------- ---------------- ------- ------- Partition 1 Primär 10 GB 32 KB Partition 2 Utökad 10 GB 10 GB * Partition 3 Logisk 10 GB 10 GB DISKPART> All it took was a wrong turn at Google, https://www.google.com/search?q=diskpart+create+logical+unit+in+extended+partition+windows+xp To find the right search terms, https://www.google.com/search?q=diskpart+create+logical+volume+in+extended+partition+windows+xp And then the right resource further down the popularity list, https://www.partitionwizard.com/partitionmagic/diskpart-create-partition.html So it's not called "local unit". I tried to translate it literally from Swedish "logisk enhet" which I saw in use in Disk Management. It's also not called "logical volume". The right term is "logical partition" and the company that makes Partition Wizard has the right command covered on their website. Just in case you don't like their own product, I guess, or they want to drive the point home how painfully difficult it is to use DiskPart compared to their product. A partition inside a partition... who would have thought? Ask them (Microsoft) the next day, and it's "volume". Anyone here care to explain to me the difference between a "partition" and a "volume" in Microsoft jargon? Specifically, the "simple volume"? So no RAID volumes. For all I know, I now have a simple volume. But I could not specify it as such in DiskPart? -
As the title says, I'm trying to use DiskPart to create a simple volume inside an extended partition. DISKPART> create volume simple Volymen kunde inte skapas. Kontrollera diskarna och parametrarna DISKPART> Isn't this the right command? It's giving me an error. The help in this version of DiskPart is a lot less than fantastic. It's the direct opposite! But I have looked it up on Windows 10 where you get usage examples in DiskPart, and this should be the right command. Or... the right command for Windows 10... maybe not so in Windows XP. I noticed, there are substantial differences. I have the extended partition selected of course. I even tried to add a size parameter, like they do in the usage example in Windows 10. DISKPART> create volume simple size=1000 Volymen kunde inte skapas. Kontrollera diskarna och parametrarna. DISKPART> The extended partition itself was created in DiskPart just seconds earlier, and it's 10 GB, so it should be able to fit "1000" (presumably MB, it's not documented). I could do the same with a better version of DiskPart, but that would require me to jump the hoops and install yet another Windows in a VM. What I have here is a Windows XP VM. Can't I use that to do the same thing? I am more curious than anything, why it's not working.

Thank you for confirming! Speaking of big corporations... Sadly, I am unable to visit the page you have linked to. The Internet Archive appears to be under DDOS attack again. I am only met with the following text. I don't know for sure if it's a DDOS attack. They have not made any updates on their Twitter account yet. But it would not be the first time. They were under attack earlier this year, in May. I hope it's not the same jokers as last year, who were potty training their AI models on historic web texts. Later on, Internet Archive said that it may not have been the work of an AI company, but an "eager" user. I call it like I see it. They can call it whatever they want. It's not normal behavior nonetheless. Sadly, this is becoming normal by each passing month. I can sense the shift in vocabulary by Internet Archive, from "AI company" and "harvesting" to "DDOS".I hope it's not the same jokers as last year, who were potty training their AI models on historic web texts. Thank you! I was just curious who the owner is. As long as it's not VerticalScope, I am happy. I agree. That's the only term I recognized in that text honestly. I have some experience in running and customizing XenForo. But I haven't used it in years now. It does come with a price tag though, unlike many. I think it's still one of the more expensive options, but well worth it I think. There is also one called Flarum, a more recent development, which I have great hopes for when it comes to forum software.

Is there any particular reason why I would encounter this? This appears when I try to post a reply. It appeared in this thread. But it also appeared in another thread I started, and I wrote a reply there, and posted it. And it seemed to be saved, earlier this morning, only to find out today that my reply is gone. Just wondering what's going on. Where do I post about such issues?
-
Sounds good to me. Is this individual publicly known? The Canadian company I thought of is called VerticalScope Inc. They bought out such sites as Tech Support Guy at techguy.org, and Tech Support Forum at techsupportforum.com. This is what they write about themselves on Tech Support Forum, https://www.techsupportforum.com/about/ They write out the same text on all the sites. They run them all on some kind of "Fora" platform - "The Fora platform includes forum software by XenForo". So all the sites look and feel the same. It's like they are trying to put together an alternative to Reddit. I hate these big corporations. They are like poison to society. They destroy everything that's good about community driven efforts like a web forum (and what's left of these relics from the web's infancy). Just my two cents! I feel good about finding this forum, that's till not taken over by a big corporation. Any chance you know what MSFN stands for?
