  1. ok then. I thought xml3 sp5 was newer than the ver in xp. Scripten - my bad! If I build a box from "bare" xpsp2 WU recomends rootsupd - so I figured it wouldn't hurt. Even looking at the dir AGAIN - it took me sev seconds to SEE the 2k hotfix...for win 2k SERVER? how the H--- did that get there? geeez. Maybe 4 years is too long on my glasses Will rebuild in a little while - with the crap outa there. Thanks for the looksee.
  2. @Tommy re: Gurglemyers - ya but I did it anyway and since it worked, mute point. Had a chance to redo the build for XP, same problem at T-9. Here it is, another late nite at work, but before I head out, I wanted to drop this... XP SP2, English, Not using fdv removal, am using winnt sif for serial # can't do hfnetchk as it system is non runnable. Not adding anything on this last attempt (removed tweakui and a small reg file that I had used last time - just in case). Will attach zip with contents of fldr. What am I not seeing? contents.zip
  3. @Tommy @ FDV Used the aug-something hfslip on my Win2k sp4 (+Gurgelmyers URP) and worked like a charm. CHA CHA freaken CHA CHA CHA!! THANKS! It worked so well, I have build a 2nd slip folder (XP_SLIP) and downloaded the appropriate files. The build locks up at T-9 (OUCH) and a reboot resumes from T-39 minutes only to hard-lock up again at the T-9. I just built a disk from the source folder and it worked. Will try again tomorrow. After I tripple check with a clearer brain. btw I thought I read somewhere on MSFN that a cmd window can be called up during gui? I can't find a shift/ctrl/alt/function key combo to do it. Am I delerious? If the lockup occurs again I would ike to poke around to see what is up. Guess a post-mortem using bartPE could work too. Thanks for the hard work guys! I must go sleep....
  4. @ Gurg As I read it (on the MS Bulliten) if you enable the large LBA and the BIOS can't handle it - you will be screwed. Although, it would also require a drive that is bigger than 137G. If you enable it (and I am for that option) you may want to post a note warning against using larger drives if the bios is dumb - since that would be a bad thing. My test-bed system can't handle it, but It only has a 40G drive so not really a problem. Just a caveat. BTW: BLESS YOU! Fantastic job. I am chomping at the bit waiting for the ver with IE/mdac,etc. Feel like a kid waiting for Christmas - wheeeeee
  5. Actually, it works quite well. You need a VALID key or the RIGHT type. Changing the pid alone won't do it - also be sure to change the key (if entered) in the winnt.sif
  6. If you changed the pid value in the setupp.ini, did you also change the key in the the winnt.sif? Use the right type of key with the right pid and you should be fine. - Well except for any oem drivers that would have been on your oem CD. You could always add that stuff - see the unattended forums.
  7. Although I use nlite to process files for a win2k build, I am running it on an XPsp2 system. Have not had any problems with makecab.exe The version in my sys32 and ddlcache are 5.1.2600.2180 Size 84KB. So I don't think it is TRULY a problem with makecab, since you guys verified the file by copying. Have you tried running makecab on any file from a cmd prompt?
  8. @TommyP Ya I know, but re the dialog here, it seemed you were working on other language integration which is not an issue for me. But, hey, I will DL the new one if you say it works better. Step 3? Are you refering to the contents of HF or IE6 files? @pene DUH. My point was (not clearly made) that the lack of winnt.sif in favor of the reg hack - whilst allowing an in-place upgrade, still gave errors regarding unsigned files. But, gee, I still have the build, maybe I will drop the sif back on the disk and do re-install. JUST to make sure it is related to the presence/absence of winnt.sif. THEN I will look into using the newest slipstream cmd.
  9. @TommyP Yep, virgin source (Not nlited like last time). BTW Did a build early today (still used the 711 script) to make a non-winnt.sif disk for an in-place upgrade. Added Pene lines manually to wu.inf. STILL got messages about incorrect versions (on new files) and a driver - perhaps due to not having the NOoemdriverSigning? Anyway, (re)buillt system worked. But needed rootsupD, IE 6 sp1, mdac patch per WU.
  10. Yes, they are older, I verified that by extracting the files from the sourcess folder and from the URP/KB's, etc. I got NO chksum errors from the last build - just a few older vers of files and a missing reg entry. I ran the experiment at work, so I don't have access to the files/notes. I THINK they were mshtml, odbc32, and sqlsrv. I have been experimenting with other things I want in my tools dir, so haven't repeated the build (yet). Still using the 711 script.
  11. @pene Yes, I am aware of that. Forgot to mention in my post.
  12. @TommyP You might want to update your 1st post to point out the new abilities! btw: I still end up with files that are older (as pointed out by hfnetchk and verified by me) - can't see why, as the newer files also have newer file dates. My quick fix is to put the newer ones (compressed) in the FIX fldr.
  13. @TommyP The WUINFCREATOR subroutine of your cmd file is not called because the sub is called ": WUINFCREATOR" the space looks like a typo - unless you are intentionaly disabling it? also, under INTEGRATE, the line reads DIR WORK\I386E DIR /A-D /B /ON > HFFILES.TXT shouldn't it be DIR WORK\I386E /A-D /B /ON > HFFILES.TXT ?? @pene GREAT Idea, but I thought that windows RE-enables driver checking during install -no matter what is in the reg. I remember reading on this site, somewhere, and there was a progie that would actively watch for and turn it back off.
  14. @pene The presence of winnt.sif on the cd causes the MS setup process to assume install is scripted so it skips the whole initial boot options. I miss it too, can't do an in-place upgrade from boot if the sif is there!
  15. It can remove components from Windows (like unneeded languages) it can re-compress files, and add certain reg teaks, etc etc etc. Very nice. Just remember to keep a backup of your "finished" build before you nLite it, because you can't re-nLite the same directory, and running TommyP's batch on an already nLited folder doesn't seem to work out well.
  16. Dude, that is cold - and uncalled for. This project is not vaporware, Gurgelmeyer has released product to beta testers as he saw fit. The man has dedicated a LOT of time to this cause. <inflamitory remark removed> @Gurgelmeyer I am glad you are not caving to the evil forces of the dark side! Stay the course. We all look forward to the final release candidate! Thanks, again.
  17. Looking it over, I thought, big deal - just removes useless crap. Shuts down indexing service, drive performance monitoring, removes cache's and defrags the HD. I didn't think that the replacement of the boot code would do much. Based on comments elsewhere on MSFN, I thought I would do a test on my home machine. It has always been slow booting. WOW. Measuring (one test only) the boot time from power-on to desktop -WITH NO HOURGLASS - the before and after time decreased by a little over 20 seconds. Doesn't seem like much to say 20 sec, but it sure FEELS like a lot when you are waiting to begin. I already keep my box defraged with several diff pgm's and have ample space, and disabling zip folder viewing seems stupid, so the rest of the bat (badly written) is of no interest to me. Think I will look thru the reg files again, though.
  18. That created your content ok? 1) Assuming you are NOT doing this on a LAN... So you want to do a multicast ? and now you need the OTHER half, which isWindows Media Server, is it running on the same machine or a remote machine? The server reported errors, the Encoder had errors, or both? A Plugin is a chunk of code that tells another program how to do something, this allows for programs to do things that the program designers hadn't forseen. In this case, the Protocol Plugin, is used to tell Media Services how the content is packaged and what protocol (http, RTSP,etc) to use between the two machines MSoft site says to see the Media Services Help file (but you are doing that already) btw My only experience is with using Realmedia Encoders to send info to an account on a corporate server. Had to do that a couple of times. So I am really shooting in the dark.
  19. I have really grown to like the XP ability to "Restore previous folder windows at logon". Does anybody know how or IF this can be kludged into Windows 2000? I have searched all over this forum and found nada. edit NEVERMIND ! I've done a bit more poking around with the files. That is def a function of the new explorer.exe which has WAY too many dependencies on other XP binaries. OH well. Sometimes it's the little things......
  20. 21. When you ping (good) is it by name or IP address? if IP is good but name is not, then you might have a DNS issue. if ping by name works then it is likely just an IE setting. Check any proxy or firewall settings you have set on your network connection. If you connect to your cable/DSL modem via ethernet, then: In IE, check Tools | Options | Connections | LAN Settings and Check to Automatically detect.
  22. Ahh come ON GUYS! We are all just hackers mucking our way thru. I don't think anyone is trying to "one-up" the other. This could be an interesting thread, espec. if the correct bits can be slipstreamed into Win 2k. I did some poking around on Msoft and came across this link kernel improvements Which treats Win 2k3 and XP as the same, at least logically -if not identically. Looks like there are too many parts to simply "xfer" a functionality (or two).
  23. @hoak Other tweaks aside, is swapping out two files all that is required to make the change? Perhaps the performance boost is really a result of the tewaks and NOT the change in system files. Would there be an advantage to using either the XP or W2k3 files in w2k? Has anyone tried it that you know of? At work, I have to downlevel install 2k in place of xp (actually, we buy the xp Lic but install 2k) so it seems to me, in this case, legality would not be an issue. Perhaps I should swap the files on my build CD and try it.
  24. Been playing with the MSoft urp. the integrate replaces a bunch of files - but still puts itself in the svpack folder to run during install. Same ol same ol. If only there was a slipstream. Wonder why it creates a separate folder for WMS instead of just replacing the files? edit: btw: Doing it the Msoft way (updates in svcpack) removing the svpacks that the MSurp replaced cut out 43 MB but adding the urp 31 MB. Reduction of 12MB -HOWEVER- the "integrate" increased the I386 Dir size by a Whopping 54 MB yeilding a CD that would be 42 MB larger. All that and the C*** isn't even slipstreamed. YUCH. Save us oh Gurgelmeyer - you are our only hope!
  25. Perhaps Unoficial Service Pack (USP) 5.0 Wait, that would be another name change. OOOH you say the nicest things! Fine by me! With the slipstream, it can be added easy. Is it here yet? Is it here yet? Is it here yet? Is it here yet? Is it here yet? What a gentleman! Catering to those who can leave the bloat behind! <envy> If the IC pkg only had a slipstream... Meanwhile, TommyP to the rescue. Is it here yet? Is it here yet? Is it here yet? Is it here yet? Is it here yet?
