  1. Hello!

If anything, I think Windows 95 is notable for representing the last (and perhaps even only) time Microsoft Corporation engaged itself with serious usability research in developing an interface and system around. The development of the OS, when it was in its prototypical "Chicago" stages, is actually rather interesting to follow.

Considering that I use it today, it's kind of ironic to note that I was actually rather resistant to Windows 95 when it was new: ...

BTW, here is an interesting comment about "desktop UI": http://itmanagement.earthweb.com/article_c...y-Advantage.htm

What should a desktop be? Merely a way to launch programs. No "innovation" is needed. Innovation in desktops has only led to useless eye-candy which increased system requirements. The ultimate desktop GUI was reached when Windows 98 was released, if it had been secure and didn't crash nothing further would have even been needed, except to make a free clone of it. Once Windows 2000/XP came out, the crashing problem was fixed. The security problem will never be fixed in the Windows world, but that has nothing to do with the GUI. Gnome and KDE should congratulate themselves on each having produced an acceptable clone of the Windows 98 GUI, close down shop except for a few bug-fixers, and go over and help WINE actually get more Windows software to run. Software working is what matters, not eye candy.

    Best regards, Roman

  2. Hello!

    http://www.computerworld.com/action/articl...eNumber=6#win95

The Windows 95 phenomenon was a lot of fuss to make over a steppingstone between 16- and 32-bit computing. The technical aspects of the thing were washed away in a marketing tsunami -- and on the subject of flooding, it cost more to develop than 1995's other bloated headline-grabber, the Kevin Costner film Waterworld.

But we appreciated Windows 95 back then, and we still think of it fondly.

    Cheers, Roman

  3. Hello!

Radeon HD2400... (no drivers installed) but same problem with Geforce 7600GS and "normal" drivers...

Hmm, some PCI express based graphic cards have problems when used with Windows 98 - it also depends on the motherboard: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...mp;#entry625851

Maybe you can try with the old PCI (not express) interface, for example:

    1. PowerColor 9250 128MB PCI | http://www.powercolor.com/Global/products_...sp?ProductID=40

    2. Sparkle GeForce FX 5200 PCI | http://www.sparkle.com.tw/product_detail.a...6&sub_id=15

    3. Matrox G450 PCI | http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products...series/g450pci/ | http://geizhals.at/a10610.html

BTW, Matrox Windows ME/98 drivers are here: http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/support/...isplay/#WinME9x

  4. The 'Buy Now' link is blocked by an entry in MDGx's excellent hosts file...

"Your request for https://www.regsoft.net:443/ could not be fulfilled, because the connection to www.regsoft.net (127.0.0.1) could not be established."

Hmm, weird, regsoft.net is also used by ghisler.com (Total Commander): http://www.ghisler.com/online2.htm

But it seems that there have been indeed some issues with regsoft:

    http://successfulsoftware.net/2008/03/09/r...stomers-beware/

Thanks for pointing this out - I was not aware of the problems!

OTOH, apparently the parent company (Digital River) is doing well:

Digital River extends contract with Adobe Systems, launches e-commerce platform

    http://www.thepaypers.com/news/article.aspx?cid=736962

    Cry me a Digital River

    http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/02/18/c...-digital-river/

The company's continued success in the consumer electronics segment is evidenced by winning new opportunities or launching stores for including Samsung, Seagate, Phillips and Hewlett-Packard among others.

Maybe it is time to remove regsoft.net from HOSTS file ...

  5. Hello!

Someone know which is the most powerfull processor for this motherboard?

I pretend to use a quad core Kentsfield, if possible.

If your mb is revision 2.0 than you can put in Q6700(G0).

The latest BIOS 3.20 must be installed to recognize it properly:

    http://www.asrock.com/mb/cpu.asp?Model=775i65G%20R2.0

FSB1066-CPU is supported by overclocking only when you adopt an external VGA card and DDR400 CL2.5 memory modules.

  6. I plan to replace in the next few months the E4500 CPU with an X6800 CPU, which should make my custom-build one of the faster Win98 computers around

BTW, there will be 3500 MHz dual-core Intel CPU: E8700

    http://www.dailytech.com/Intel+Prepares+Ne...ticle14066c.htm

Another project would be to find a way to use both cores under Win98, maybe there is Win98-compatible software to manually assign programs to specific cores.

IMHO this is not possible ... OK, one way could be running two Win98 virtual guests :)

  7. Hello!

I recalled that I intended to try Babelpad before; however, I couldn't locate the 98 version from the official website. Therefore, I gave up.

    Hmm, let me check ...

Indeed, author (Andrew West) removed the link.

On my disk I have an old file called BabelPad9X.zip with BabelPad.exe dated 2005-JAN-19 (version 1.6.5).

Fortunately our powerful friend archive.org can help us:

    http://web.archive.org/web/20070613120235/.../BabelPad9X.zip

This is version 1.9.3 with datestamp 2006-APR-04

BTW, here are two interesting links:

  8. Hello!

Did you try BabelPad: http://www.babelstone.co.uk/Software/BabelPad.html ?

BabelPad uses Microsoft's Unicode Script processor, Uniscribe (filename usp10.dll), to format and render Unicode text. The more recent a version of Uniscribe you have installed on the computer the better support you will have for complex scripts such as Indic and south-east Asian scripts, Tibetan and Mongolian. The version of Uniscribe that BabelPad is using is indicated in the About BabelPad... dialogue box.

Uniscribe should come pre-installed on Windows 2000 and Windows XP, and should also have been installed if you are running Internet Explorer Version 5 or above on other Windows operating systems. However Uniscribe may not be available on some PCs running Windows 95, 98, ME or NT 4.0 that do not have Internet Explorer 5 or above. If when you attempt to run BabelPad, a dialog box entitled "Unable to Locate DLL" with the message "The dynamic link library USP10.dll could not be found in the specified path" appears, this means that Uniscribe is not installed on your PC.

Uniscribe is constantly being updated to support new scripts and to add new functionality to existing script support, so it is important that you have the latest possible version of Uniscribe installed on your PC. Even if you do not use complex scripts, you will only get advanced features for Latin script such as ligatures with a recent version of Uniscribe (to see this try entering <s ZWJ t> with Code2000). You may run BabelPad with a particular version of Uniscribe by simply placing a copy of the Uniscribe file (usp10.dll) in the same directory that BabelPad.exe is located. Note that the latest beta version of Uniscribe is available to members of the Microsoft VOLT Users Community.

Some versions of Uniscribe may have bugs that may cause BabelPad to crash. Those that I know of are outlined below :

Versions of Uniscribe greater than Version 1.405.2416.1 may only work correctly when running under the Windows XP operating system. The following unexpected display behaviour may be observed in BabelPad's character map utility when running under Windows 95/98/ME, Windows NT4 or Windows 2000 with a version of Uniscribe that is greater than Version 1.405.2416.1 :

Strange characters displayed in the range U+0000 through U+001F of the Basic Latin block

Strange characters displayed in the range U+0080 through U+009F of the Latin-1 Supplement block

Only digits displayed for Indic scripts (including Tibetan and Mongolian) if the selected font does not have OpenType tables defined for the particular script

Version 1.453.3665.0 has a bug that may cause any application that relies on it to crash if an attempt is made to display any character in the Lao script range.

Version 1.460.3707.0 has a bug that may cause any application that relies on it to crash if an attempt is made to display a sequence of 16 or more consecutive Tibetan letters without a break (i.e. a space, tsheg or shad).

Some early versions of Uniscribe may crash when an attempt is made to display Arabic text with the "Arial Unicode MS" font.

Early versions of Uniscribe have a bug that causes it to return to BabelPad the wrong character position and screen point of Unicode characters outside of the Basic Multilingual Plane when in Right-To-Left (RTL) mode. This means that you may be unable to click on or select text composed of characters from Unicode Planes 1-16 when in RTL layout mode.

  9. Hello!

    3 mistakes:

Via is having Windows 98 SE and Windows Vista drivers for souncard on P4M900 chipset (my earlier mistake)

P4M900 chipset is having SATA2 and Windows 98 SE drivers !

I do not see point in Nvidia 5X00 GPU. Much better are Nvidia 6x00 and ATI 9x00

Hm, IMHO this is again a mistake. P4M900 is just a northbridge,

but SATA functionality is in southbridge.

For example the following P4M900 motherboard is not SATA2

    http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Mode...X90-VSTA%20R2.0

because it has VT8237A SB, while the following PT880 Pro Ultra is

SATA2 capable since it has VT8237S SB

    http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Mode...al-SATA2%20R2.0

For example, MSI P4M900M3-L is SATA2

    http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=pr...amp;cat2_no=170

And IIRC, Windows 98SE driver works only when VT8237S is running in RAID

mode (this is configured in BIOS) ...

  10. Hello!

Any one here knows if it is possible to buy a new laptop that can be used with windows 98?

Maybe Fujitsu Siemens ESPRIMO V5535. Specifications of its motherboard:

    Northbridge ... SIS M672

    Southbridge ... SiS 968

Graphics ... SiS Mirage 3+ Graphics, 64-256 MB shared memory

    LAN ... SiS196

  11. Hello!

I ran into a similar problem. See my post at VS 2008 and NT 4.0 (if the link doesn't work, search Google groups for "VS 2008 and NT 4.0").

I'm not sure if that helps you, but it worked for me. Not an elegant solution, but it does the trick (since that post, I do a post build step and modify the exe directly).

Thanks for great info. BTW, here is shorter link:

  12. Hello!

Can you latter write if everything is working OK ?

I will - I do not have that mb (yet) ...

In the meantime, I was able to install Windows 98 SE on

Gigabyte 8I945GZME-RH. It has Intel chipset 945GZ and

the southbridge is ICH7 (82801GB). Because there is

no driver for onboard graphics, I put in PCI GeForce 6200.

OTOH, has anyone installed Win98SE on

    Intel 965 motherboard (with ICH8) ?

Finally, there is an interesting (cheap) ABIT board with

new P35 Express chipset and old ICH7 instead of ICH9

    southbridge - IP35V:

    http://www2.abit.com.tw/page/en/motherboar...ODEL_NAME=IP35V

    http://www.digitimes.com/print/a20071203PD202.html

... makers have employed several strategies including

the use of the older ICH7 southbridge on their P35

motherboards which is against Intel's official

    specification ...

IMHO this one could be compatible with W98SE ...

  13. Hello!

I've been trying to find drivers for some HP LaserJet printers, recently. The result is there are Windows 9x systems listed as a download choice, but there are no drivers available. All one can get is some management software without any drivers included.

Is there any HP driver repository with old systems drivers?

I've heard Lexmark did something similiar to HP. Since, I'm not fond of the Lexmark printers, so I had no opportunity to test Lexmark drivers servers.

I've found small subset of Windows 9x drivers here:

  14. Would you be willing to create one as you seem to be two expert users of that OS ?

Sure, as soon as I get Nathan Lineback to explain to me how to install the newest TCP/IP stack included with Dial-up Networking Upgrade 1.4.

    http://www.infinisource.com/win95.html#upgrades

On the 27th February '98, Microsoft released Windows Sockets 2 for Windows 95. also called Winsock 2. This is an update of the Windows Microsoft Sockets 2 version which was previously available as a Software Developers Kit (SDK) version only. This new release is available as W95ws2setup.exe [986 KB]. This release includes a new version of the TCP/IP stack and resolves several previous winsock issues. This winsock should supercede all previous winsock upgrades, however, Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom, still has the other two versions available, as mentioned below, so we'll leave that information available here until we learn otherwise.
