  1. Hello!

I apologize for this question, but what programs/applications/services utilize or require the .NET framework? I've just started updating my laptop w/ win2k sp4 which I haven't used since April 2007. It doesn't have any versions of .NET on it per Add/Remove programs.

I've only run into one program which stated a requirement for .NET & I think that was Nero 9.

  2. Hello!

Cheap Pentium Dual Core E6500, E6300 and Celeron E3300 all have VT

And are all slower than my existing CPU

    ---

OK, you have a point ... BTW, does your mobo support VT-d:

    http://communities.intel.com/thread/2181

Maybe OT, but if you are going to replace computer, you could add VT-c gigabit ethernet adapter: :)

    http://software.intel.com/en-us/blogs/2009...r-connectivity/

bite the bullet and get an i5 instead or go with AMD instead.

    ---

I might as well sell my existing CPU/RAM/Mobo too, and get a i5 instead as it would basically cost the same. Then again, AMD has a decent quad with AMD-V for $100...

I agree, AMD looks nice :)

  3. Hello!

Where it really sucks, and where there are no other options besides buying a new non-crippled, expensive-ish CPU (which sucks a lot if you still have a socket 775 mobo i.e. most people still), is when you want to run 64 bit OS'es in VMs :( Running the x86 version of Win2008 R2 seems kind of silly.

Cheap Pentium Dual Core E6500, E6300 and Celeron E3300 all have VT:

    BTW, there is no Windows 2008 R2 x86 ...

  4. Hello!

Is there anyway to stop users from being able to close the logon dos window?

Try free ConsoleNoClose by Uwe Sieber:

    http://www.uwe-sieber.de/dosfon_e.html

ConsoleNoClose disables the X button and removes the Close system

menu item of all console windows when they become active.

It runs invisible in the background.

If it's started when another instance is running, it ends and

    leaves the previous instance untouched.

To remove a previous instance from memory, run it with parameter /R.

To do it for exactely one console window, start it with parameter /1.

It will then disable the X button of the first console window that

    becomes active. Then it ends.

Started with /ALL it deactivates all menus of console windows. They

cannot be closed, maximized, minimized then. No access to settings

    anymore.

    Cheers, Roman

  5. Hello!

Of the FW I've reviewed, LookandStop - not free - promises to be fully IPv6 aware, but didn't work properly in my tests :(
What version of Look'n'Stop are you testing?

New LnS 2.7 beta 1 has just been released:

    http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=253226

IPV6: Extension headers support (in filtering rules and packet content display).

ICMPV6: for packet content display, added some new text description (for types 141 to 147)

Default rulesets are updated with IGMP, DHCPV6, and ICMPV6 rules to avoid systematic alerts in Vista/Windows7.

Application Filtering IPV6: port & IP selection through range & mask were not working properly.

You can describe the IPv6 problems in the official forum (monitored by author Frederic Gloannec):

  6. Hello!

I fixed Chrome Installer for Windows 2000 v2.0b.

You also can use chrome version 3.0.190.1~4.0.201.1 on Windows 2000 in this version :thumbup

    note: v3.0 and 4.0 require Win2000-KB915985-v2

Great! Using your installer v2.1 and Mulder's Chromium Updater ( http://mulder.dummwiedeutsch.de/home/?page=projects#chromium ) I was able to post this message from Chromium 4.0.204.0 (Developer Build 24436) :thumbup

    Thanks, Roman

  7. Hello!

BTW, I was wondering ... is there a small wired-wireless adapter - so that I plug the device into my existing LAN port on my laptop and then configure the device with web browser to connect to the desired wireless network ... so no wireless drivers needed :)

    Thanks, Roman

  8. Hello!

You can also get the card to work with WPA encryption by installing the WPA supplicant [Aegis2] which you will find in Program Files>Edimax folder. Otherwise it's only WEP.

A bit late but hope this helps

Thanks - and it's not too late. Currently I have the following options:

    - Edimax 7618Ug and ASUS WL-167g (both are USB adapters with Ralink chips)

    - Level One WNC-0305USB (Realtek 8187)

    EDIT:

    - Edimax 7318USG (Ralink RT2571W) is also available for 39 EUR: http://technicianspot.blogspot.com/2008/04...ireless-ew.html

  10. Hmm, it seems that I cannot update Office 2000 via "office update" any more ... :(

    http://www.thetechherald.com/article.php/2...fice-2000-users

Microsoft has presented music to the fat lady, and on July 14 she will sing the final notes for Office 2000.

    ...

In addition to Office 2000 support, the Office Update Inventory Tool will also be decommissioned. The tool will be available for download, but will no longer be updated as of July 14, 2009. Instead, businesses should use Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).

Moreover, Microsoft will discontinue support for the Office Update Web site.

Customers can access the equivalent functionality of the Office Update site via Microsoft Update. This change takes effect on August 01, 2009.

  11. Hello!

I am persistent in my “obsession” that the IPV6 issue, is going to be the ultimate challenge for 9x users.
BTW, thanks for starting this thread
" For example, Windows XP supports a little bit of IPv6, but not enough to make it work transparently, said Woundy. It would be difficult to get IPv6 operational on the average consumer's Windows XP computer today. "

I actually find the statement above, if it is true----to be rather perplexing, bordering on shocking!

If it is true, you can bet an IPV6 patch will be forthcoming from Microsoft (if it does not exist),

and that 3rd party's will produce many.

    DNS lookups over IPv6

    http://www.ipv6style.jp/en/action/20050905/index.shtml

DNS resolver (DNS query function) of Windows XP does not support IPv6 transport. The function can query AAAA records (IPv6 addresses) to DNS, but on IPv4 network only. This is a well known issue, and KDDI Lab solved this by developing a new DLL for name resolution.

    PPPv6 PPPoE

    http://internecine.eu/systems/windows_xp-ipv6.html

PPPv6 is not supported in Windows XP, as stated in the official documenation. No PPPv6 support was (covertly) added with any of the service packs. Maybe third-party vendors (will) offer PPPv6 software for Windows XP in the future, if a market arises through more widespread IPv6 dial-up adaption.
    but http://www.cfos.de/ipv6_link/ipv6_link_e.htm
IPv6 dial-up driver for Windows, Automatic routing and address configuration

IPv4 <-> IPv6 DNS mapping, DHCPv6 Stateful, Stateless, Prefix Delegation

High-speed, 10x faster than the Windows driver

    Configurable DHCP DUID, VLAN support

    and (in Hungarian): http://ipv6.niif.hu/m/IPv6_DSL_architektur%C3%A1ja

    DHCPv6 - 3rd party (GPL) solution is available: http://klub.com.pl/dhcpv6/

It even works in Windows 2000/NT (experimental)

BTW, IPv6 downloads for Windows 2000 are mirrored on:

  12. Of course there is no IPV6 established where I am in this part of town, so it might be a waste of time; yet, if I can see the turtles "swimming"---not dancing, I will know it works.

    Any advice will be appreciated!

    http://cable360.net/ct/news/ctreports/36250.html

There are some interesting challenges in the home. One is making sure that the home gateways support IPv6. There are still a number of devices that only understand IPv4.

For example, Windows XP supports a little bit of IPv6, but not enough to make it work transparently, said Woundy. It would be difficult to get IPv6 operational on the average consumer's Windows XP computer today. It is important to weave network address translation (NAT) into the backbone network seamlessly between the existing IPv4 world and the virtually limitless IPv6 world.

Many devices in the home, such as portable media players and cameras, only support IPv4, so Comcast will have to retain legacy support for these devices over its network.

  13. if win98 had better support for NTFS and some good file system for big files.

I should have use it now instead of windows 2000.

    Windows98 is a fantastic OS.

and with RP9 and kernelex it is really good.

But there is no good way for NTFS.

Yes there are a few NTFS for win98 but for me they have not worked very well.

Have you tried free Paragon NTFS for Win98:

    http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-win98/

    It supports NTFS 3.1: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310749
