  1. Thanks for the answers. I was asking because Im planning to migrate into 2000 after the fail with 98. Just one question: Can Windows XP drivers work with 2000 fine?
  2. For example this site says that IrfanView latest version for Windows 2000 is 4.33 BUT IrfanView says that the latest version STILL supports even Windows 9x. I think only the supportfor Windows 95 was dropped but the main question remains: Can I trust to the Old Apps site?
  3. I haven't got battery problems and my final plan is to install 98 SE on a real machine. VB is not on my list at all. Im just testing the OS there.
  4. Yes, sorry for the lack of information guys: Im using Virtual Box 4.2.16; Bootable Windows 98 SE CD 656,6 MB; The virtual machine have 512 MB RAM, 128 MB video card, 1 processor and 4 GB HDD; This disk gives me 2 options: Boot from HDD and Boot from CD; Im choosing Boot from CD; Then 3 options are appearing: Start Setup from CD, Start PC with CD-ROM support and without CD-ROM support; I chosed the first and maybe this is my problem. With the second which seems logical decision a DOS prompt is appearing with A:\>. From there I can use fdisk, then run the setup. Using fdisk at first seems to me dirty job. And for some reason always Im unable to format after partitioning and after that Windows is saying that it need from 739 MB memory to run or something like that. My first try was with the "Start Setup from CD" and THEN my problem appeared with the drivers. Looks like the virtual PC was unable to detect my disk at all.
  5. Because I have detective skills I found one good bootable CD for Windows 98 and decided to throw it out of the window. Well, well let's get serious now, shall we? Thanks to this CD I learned why it's called bootable - I can install it on bare bones hardware and run the setup directly from there. So far so good, the install went fine, I saw my favorite loading screen, then the white mouse, the blue screen of life (BSOL)...Everything was like in a dream except the drivers! I mean that something went totally wrong - when the usual screen arrived and Windows started detecting my hardware it started also asking me to insert the install CD for the drivers. The CD was there, the path for some reason was to the Windows folder (I don't know why and I don't know what is the path of the CD). Anyway no drivers were found because of the "missing CD". I stopped the VB at this point. Where is my mistake? Notes: I removed the CD at one point after the install and after the question for the CD I inserted it again. I was doing this with Virtual Box. I have a strange hope that my Acer will someday say "welcome" to my first and favorite OS... EDIT: Looks like I was blind for some options. I will see what I can do about it. EDIT 2: Nope, looks like I don't understand fdisk properly.
  6. Im sure Windows 2000 will work just fine here, does there exists any extra benefits for having it over XP? Of course the support for 2000 was dropped a while ago but you guys and all the community here are doing great job for extending it. I'm going to go out on a limb and say yes simply because UURollup contains blackwingcat's kernel and core updates which actually contain some Vista/7 extensions. Simply put, Windows 2000 with UURollup installed will have some XP/Vista/7 components in it which I believe makes 2000 a lot better than XP. Of course you still have a bit of an issue with drivers but there are even unofficial drivers that work great with Windows 2000. We've also modified a lot of programs that were XP only to work on Windows 2000 as well. I also personally believe that Windows 2000 is a bit less resource dependent than XP so it seems to have a bit more power. Funny though because my Windows 2000 computer really seems a lot more stable and less crash prone than my Windows XP laptop downstairs. But I've been using Windows 2000 for 12 years and have used it well beyond the cutoff date, doesn't bother me a bit. Oh, and tomasz86 has also created a compilation where you can install every single NET framework from MS, from 1.0 all the way to 4.0 and applications that require 4.0 really run on Windows 2000 now. Yeah, I saw also the unofficial SP 5.2 project. Im interested to find Windows which is not a target for hacker's attack's because Im sure that after April 2014 there will be massive XP destruction... Also low res Windows because my laptop is getting old and more hardware expensive OS make it overheating easily. Anyway Im also Linux user so I have big choice.
  7. Im running NT4 SP6a with Virtualbox. The only problem which I have with it is the display driver. I have only 16 colors. But in terms of perfomance it is very good. Software support amazingly is well too and you can run most of the modern programs just fine but I do not recommend installing NT 4.0 on a real modern machine. PS: Installing NT 3.1 or 3.51 on a real machine is overkill.
  8. Im sure Windows 2000 will work just fine here, does there exists any extra benefits for having it over XP? Of course the support for 2000 was dropped a while ago but you guys and all the community here are doing great job for extending it. That's very easy and practical, I had done that already on both my laptop and PC.
  9. Well if I can't do it, XP will always work fine for me. Anyway my retro feel about 98 will never die (most probably I will buy old PC specially for 98).
  10. My laptop consists of the following hardware: Intel Pentium T4400 (2.2 GHz, 800 MHz FSB) Intel GMA 4500M 15,6 HD LCD 3 GB RAM 320 GB HDD DVD Super Multi DL drive Acer Nplify 802.11b/g/n Bluetooth 2.1+EDR Multi-in 1 card reader 6-cell Li-on battery (which is most probably f*cked because of me ) Im very eager to learn when I must apply this hotfixes and in what order to do the things (if any). But first of all what do you think about this Acer? Windows 98 SE friendly or not?
  11. That's fine. Anyway Im motivated enough to try it (in case the worst happen I have Linux live USB).
  12. Yes, but I do not find any specific things about my hardware. Anyway I must have at least a few CD's with data before I try to do this.
  13. Hello guys, Im new here but for me Windows 98 SE is not a new experience at all. This was my first OS and still the favorite one but now I have a huge dilemma: I want to install Windows 98 SE on my laptop which is Acer Aspire 5738Z. If further hardware specific things are required I can give them. The reason why I want this? Maybe because Im crazy nerd but hell I love retro software and games! Now Im using here Windows XP SP3 x86. There are a few problems although: 1. Drivers, drivers, drivers... Any advice where I can get them for 98? With XP was fairly easy. 2. Installation - I'm a little bit afraid about MS DOS and Windows 98 installations because my hardware at all and my skills at second place. I can install every Windows but in a virtual machine the feeling is different. Is there exists any 98 SE install which can be installed without first installing DOS? And how I can wipe out my C drive before the actual 98 install? 3. How I can pass the limits of Windows 98 - for example RAM size, etc...? 4. Which programs to install/to not install? KernelEX is a must for sure. 5. Any other advices? Any advice will be appreciated and sorry if I sound like complete noob but I want this thing on my laptop... Also sorry about my spelling because English is not my native language. And by the way my real name is Georgi (in English George). Nice to meet you all!
