I installed a Sound Blaster 16 ISA CT2980 PnP in my 466is Win95 computer. These are the drivers I found for it on Creative's site. Should I install all these drivers? The Driver(s) available for Sound Blaster 16 on Windows 95 is listed below. ========== Normal Usage: ========== 1) Go to the Start Menu and "Restart in MS-DOS Mode" 2) As soon as you get to the prompt, type DOSDVD <Enter> If all goes well, now both your DVD Recorders should be recognized and usable. 3) When you finish, you may simply turn off the computer with the power button, or reboot, or type EXIT <Enter> at the prompt, and this will result in a full reboot (because you've loaded resident DOS drivers, so you cannot just go back to Windows, without a full reboot). Notice that if you type EXIT <Enter> before issuing the DOSDVD <Enter>, in this case you get back to Windows without a full reboot, because no resident DOS drivers were loaded yet, so a full reboot was not needed. 4) If this procedure fails to work OK for you, my first guess is that your internal DVD-Recorders are not IDE, but SATA, and in this case, you'll have to substitute OAKCDROM.SYS for another apropriate driver (look for them at MDGx's). I say this because you've never confirmed (nor denied) that your Recorders are in fact IDE. I'm guessing here. 5) Now, if you don't mind always having to do a full reboot on EXIT, or prefer not to have to remember running DOSDVD every time you "Restart in MS-DOS Mode", before being able to use the DVDs, then simply copy DOSDVD.BAT to DOSSTART.BAT (that also must be located in C:\WINDOWS), and the system will automagically load the DOS drivers for you, every time you "Restart in MS-DOS Mode". N.B.: I'm also supposing that your %windir% folder is C:\WINDOWS, if this is not true, adjustments have to be made for it, too. I didn't use %windir% in the batch file, because this environment variable doesn't exist outside Windows, that is, in True DOS Mode. HTH. I have an IDE CDROM instead of a DVDROM. Would this work for me or would it have to be changed?

I was going more by the amount of I/O holes where you plug in. I've noticed the Vibra's have 3 and the 16's have 4. This one has 4. Don't even know if thats right, just an observation. But... As you can see the 16 is much larger and has more stuff on the board than the Vibra. The Vibra also only has 3 I/O ports. And the SoundBlaster 16 has 4. And the final verification is the label.

I ordered a CREATIVE LABS - SoundBlaster 16 ISA Sound Card CT2980 (not Vibra) on Amazon that should be here any day now so I'm looking for the correct drivers for that. I think I'm probably not going to use the Vibra's since they have no bass/treble controls. Also, I'm not able to access the cdrom drive from DOS using the D: command. I found these solutions from Microsoft but have never messed with this stuff. This behavior can occur if any of the following conditions exist: The CD-ROM driver or Mscdex.exe file is disabled (commented) or missing from the Autoexec.bat or Config.sys file. The CD-ROM driver or Mscdex.exe file is missing or damaged. The startup disk does not contain the CD-ROM driver or Mscdex.exe file. You have replaced the original CD-ROM and not updated MS-DOS drivers. To access a CD-ROM drive when you boot to a Windows command prompt or restart the computer in MS-DOS mode, you must load the real-mode CD-ROM driver in the Config.sys file and the MSCDEX driver in the Autoexec.bat or Dosstart.bat file. If your CD-ROM drive is supported in protected mode in Windows, the real-mode CD-ROM and MSCDEX drivers are most likely not being loaded in the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat or Dosstart.bat files on the hard disk. In addition, if you boot from a floppy disk, the CD-ROM and MSCDEX drivers will not load unless you manually configure the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files on the floppy disk to load them.

Windows 95/98 boot disk goes through setup and just before the A prompt shows up it says the command.com file is missing or corrupted. Then it says to type the name of the Command Interpreter like C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM I typed that in and hit enter and it repeated the message. Sup with that? Ok, found problem. First boot was after splash screen expired. Rebooted computer with boot disk in and everything ran right.

Okay, I got the 256mb video now so I'm pretty well set as far as Win95 games go which is the purpose of this computer and onboard sound is ok but I think I would like a sound card that would be able to handle home theater speakers. Maybe soundblaster 16 . I have some ISA Soundblaster Vibra's but there is no separate control for treble and bass like the 16's have. I have tried to install the Vibra several times unsuccessfully. Going to have to find out what is needed to make them work.
-
So it would have to be run from a floppy?

The onboard sound is working now and I successfully installed the Nvidia GeForce FX5200 256mb graphics card. Is there a setting I need to change to use the addon card instead of the onboard video. Disable onboard video in Device Manager or change setting on the J1 video jumper? I have new settings in Display that must be from the card but dont know of any potential conflicts between the 2 graphics sources. Oh, I do have a conflict in Device Manager on the onboard video. I'll just go ahead and disable it there. Disabled onboard video, no conflicts in conflicting device list now.

Could'nt get IE5.5 to load and Windows Media player 7 said I need a newer version of windows. Installed winsock W95ws2setup.exe but still getting errors mysteriously.

Thx DW (I should have named this thread "Several Hundred Windows 95 Questions")

I need to load cdrom drivers in DOS for my Win95 system. I found this method on http://www.bootdisk.com/txtfiles/doscdrom.txt . Does this look like a good way to do it?
-
No. Name of the package should be "W95ws2setup.exe." I don't have a link for it handy at the moment, but if you can't find it I will upload it somewhere. Try looking on MDGx.com under the 95/95OSR2 Updates sections. OMG!, that should have been the first thing I checked a week ago.

Is this the right Winsock to be using? ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winsock/winsock2/ It's the ws295sdk.exe file.

Added TCP/IP, rebooted, tried to reinstall Winsock 2 for win95 and get same message. "Install TCP/IP network protocol from win 95 disk (I looked for it on the disk and didn't see it). Restart setup. If it is already installed, reboot and run windows\WS2BAKUP\WS2BAKUP.BAT to restore Winsock components. Run setup again." I have WS2BAKUP on c drive but not WS2BAKUP.BAT.

Links already given. I doubt you would be able to "easily" find it on Microsoft's site these days... Ah, ok I have already downloaded both of those and installed them. I forgot the first one was DCOM95

I only have 2 nVidia cards in all of my computer parts stockpile... I always used 3dfx (long ago ) and ATi cards, so I am not very familiar with nVidia... I believe later versions of the nVidia Control Panel do not work on 95 at all. I seem to remember something about the 77.xx (??) release of ForceWare being the last version that works 100% under 95, but I can't remember where I got that information. The later drivers may work, but the Control Panel itself does not. Many of these may be unrelated, but besides DCOM95, and DirectX8, I always install the Winsock2 update, the Windows 95 Y2K update, Dial-Up Networking 1.4, Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2, and Windows Media Player 7 (or unofficial 7.1). Should be able to get MSCONFIG from here... Many searches said I could download DCOM95 at this site but which link is the right one? http://www.microsoft.com/com/default.mspx

Winsock2 says it needs TCP/IP, how do I get that?

No DOS CDROM driver is loaded. You will have to load a DOS CDROM driver or copy the DETECT.EXE to your hard drive (C:\). Since you have no DOS experience, the easiest way to get a DOS CDROM driver loaded would be to use a Windows 9x Boot Disk... But the best thing to do for now is place DETECT.EXE in the root of the C:\ drive. When you get the C:\WINDOWS> prompt, type "cd\" and press ENTER. Then type "DETECT" and press ENTER. Not quite sure how to place detect.exe in the "Root" of the C:\ drive. I placed it in a folder on the C drive but not working yet.

So if I restart Win95 in MS-DOS mode, I can run it from there? Yes, or press F8 while the machine is first booting up and choose "Command Prompt only" from the Startup Menu. Ok, I am at the command prompt with the detect program on cd. I'm trying D>setup, D>detect, not sure what to do here. Never ran DOS programs. I assume you are at the "C:\>" prompt? If so type "D:" (or the letter of the CD drive if not D) without the quotes and press ENTER. Should get a "D:\>" prompt. Then type "DETECT" and press ENTER. Actually I restarted in DOS and it is a C:\WINDOWS> prompt and the commands are not working

On my BIOS screen "Default" is the name given to the section containing the "Original" file and the "Optimal" file. When you open the Original file it says "Restore Old values?" and I've noticed the "Old values" seem to change when I change settings in the BIOS, so I don't think they put in a static set of values that would be truly called "Default". I think I'm going to try running the "Optimal" setting after I've got everything running right and have run programs for a while just to see if it makes a difference.

Last BIOS post updated and will run BIOS identifier program tomorrow.

So if I restart Win95 in MS-DOS mode, I can run it from there?

I don't see any "Boot Sequence" definitions? AFAICR, using the "Auto Detect IDE Devices" (when "Standard Setup" set to "Auto" if possible) allows the BIOS to look at the Device and set parameters accordingly. As for CD-ROM being listed, I can't actually remember, but I believe it needs to be or else the CD-ROM drivers need loaded in Win9x. It seems I remember that using the "Auto-Detect" that it wouldn't "stick" unless you Saved -AND- Exited. BTW, how do you "Save"/"Exit" - a Function Key(s) or a Screen Selection? Would it be possible for you to press the "Pause" Key when you first turn on the PC or in the BIOS Setup Screen to get the BIOS Version/Identifier? It would help in determining a BIOS update. You may need that to support (e.g.) larger HDD or faster CPU. Look here, scroll down to "Florida-TG" for "examples" of what you should see - http://www.elhvb.com/mboards/trigem/bios/list.html Notice to all - This info accurately provided will/may assist others with older eMachines (and maybe Gateways) in the future. edit - AHA!!!! Confusion OVER!!! Take THIS Link, insert into the NEXT link and set "From Language"="Korean" for translation! Voila! Your BIOS Settings! http://www.elhvb.com/mboards/TriGem/profile/FLORIDA-C/FLOC_cmos.htm http://translate.google.com/ I'm trying to get it into some kind of "stored" format now... Looks like I didn't include a few details. In "Optimum" mode, for the "Primary Master Hard Disk", the Type: is set to "Auto" and the "Optimum" boot sequence is 1 ATAPI CDROM 2 Floppy 3 IDE HDD I will go over everything again this evening and make sure everything is in there. I will try the pause key for finding the version too. After leaving the BIOS setup screen there is a screen where you can choose to save changes or not.
