  1. o im sorry, are u trying to b funny? hows about you translate that into a 'joke' we can all share..
  2. the funny thing is these technologies from such a stable OS couldnt even stabilise ME on many systems lol
  3. I believe i read that Gape was wanting ppls support to help the development of sp2 rather than jackass comments towards fellow members.
  4. funny that, i have 3 systems running IE on win98se and they all run stable. but get this, 2 of the systems are running Cyrix processors. the only IE probs i have faced when dealing with other ppls IE probs is where JAVA applets freeze the browser. For those of you who play yahoo pool on 98 im guessing you know what im talking about? simple fix - updating JAVA.
  5. Explain how it is illegal. As far as the license issues go, to my knowledge there is no such harm using those files, as you have a Windows OS license and it is simply software. Therefore you already technically own these software titles and if you were to begin using the ones from Windows ME it would be the same as updating your software. Nothing illegal in that. Intel makes the defrag utility (not Windows or MS) and everything that people want to add already exist in Windows. No one has to pay to buy just Scandisk or the defrag utilities, as they come with all Windows. So I would see no harm in using the Windows ME versions, as I would personally view it as being like freeware in a sense. if you look at the majority of DLL files in a Windows ME installation you will see that they are componants of Windows 2000. So Tarun, i also believe that there is no harm in using such files. Does this mean every licenced copy of Windows ME should be rendered illegal due to it not being accompanied by a Windows 2000 licence?
  6. hopefully this will stablize this operating system's explorer interface. I cant remember how i did it exactly, but i did manage to achieve this on a clean install of windows ME. Im pretty sure i used a combination of IE radicator and 98lite 4.5/4.6 to achieve this. Im thinking i used IE radicator to remove IE 5.5 and then i installed IE6 and used 98lite to re-integrate it into the desktop. but last time i tried this with IE6 SP1 i ran into problems. i got an error wen i tried to install IE6 SP1 When I use 98lite 4.7 to install MElite, I have to first install IE55, then remove it, then it will install IE60SP1. Trying it first it gets an error because it [erroneously; I have all the files!] believes it has to contact an MS file server and it can't do it, etc. Also, the Help stuff that comes up [forcefully!] in safe mode is now fixed in MElite; however, it requires the WBEM option be set [MElite will prompt you warning you to NOT delete it, etc.] but the WMI interface is still optional. Additionally, I reported [just under the wire for the release of 4.7!] various other ME-isms that were broken in MElite SLEEK [V1] such as the OSK, etc. Improved in 4.7 but not totally fixed: MSCONFIG with SLEEK [V1] will apply correctly when you exit, but will create a minor crash and will not actually reboot. Manual reboot will work OK, etc. Anyway, try 4.7; most of the effort was placed on fixing ME past 4.6, etc. [sLEEK [V2] still on hold .] cjl i hav had 4.7 for a whilte, just at the time of doing this i had 4.5/6.
  7. mine is 7 yrs old. costed me $150 australian.
  8. win me dusnt like ISA hardware. its best to run ME without any ISA hardware. I had nightmares when i was running an ISA network card under win me. My laptop supports to only go as high as windows 98, however i am pushing it. i cannot seem to enable power management successfully. and it does not list 'composite power source' or 'apm battery slot' in device manager in normal mode, however in safe mode it does. i hav tried doing a clean install on win me...and an upgrade from 98 but no luck. this is the only difficulty im having.
  9. its kind of pointless to buy a new laptop when all i need it for is instant messaging and internet browsing. so to me i dnt class it as obsolete cos its doing what its capable of. if i was to try and upgrade it to XP, THEN i would deem it as obsolete as its something it cant do. so i dnt see your logic. believe it or not this thing runs windows me REAL good. ive never seen it so stable. Tarun: im aware that SSL test was farely pointless. how long have ppl been saying there are security holes in IE for now? since wat 1996? im sure 8yrs later there wouldnt be as many.. i dont keep large amounts of money in my bank account so i for what i use IE for it is adequate. besides, a properly written server side script should secure the holes found in IE if any. i cant c my bank, The Commonwealth Bank of Australia, or any other banking institution releasing 'NetBank' or similar to internet users to make their transactions to have their customers come bak to them saying ppl hav gotten their credit card numbers and made transactions from them due to faults in the software the customer was using. its the web developer that allows for these software flaws which can b a potential risk. sites stating that 'IE has 20,000 security holes and will steal ur credit card details' is misleading. its not always the software's fault. as for the button command, obviously it exists. but i have never seen it used in HTML up till 4-5 days ago. and ive been using HTML for 7 years now. It looks as tho its mainly used for JavaScript and XML. as for firefox being able to view your website perfectly, you and other firefox users may be able to, but what about the other 80% of internet users? using HTML tags which only a minority of internet users can properly execute in their broswers is not a smart move for any webmaster. u really no how to endorse firefox huh lol. Gape: I screwed my installation of win98se by fiddling with stuff trying to find a solution to the prob. so im re-installing with windows me once i sort out some APM probs. i found an uninstall prob which should be corrected in ur next edition. when i clicked to uninstall the service pack, it couldnt find the win98 files as they were on a network share n a screwed up the PC Card settings thus not having access to them, so i had to cancel and the uninstall deleted the INF files. so when i tried later to uninstall it said it could not find them.
  10. IE has become the internet standard, and for me as an occasional web designer it is important to make my designs cross-browser compatible. in order to do this i use a combination of IE6 and Netscape 4.08. So personally, i have no use for firefox. Tarun: i would CLICK the link on your site to try the encryption test...but in IE i cant. i looked at your HTML and i have never seen the <BUTTON> </BUTTON> tags before? You would be much better off compatibility wise to leave that tag out. i tested IE6 SP2 on verisign and it reports that it needs no upgrading. so thats good enuff for me to believe its secure enough for what i need it for. soldier1st: i use scheduler in order to check for windows updates. i leave my laptop on out of standby during the day/nite so when im out and about it checks for me, i cant be bothered doing it manually nowadays. i used to configure all systems i built and fixed for people with scheduler disabled. but in the last 2 yrs ive started enabling it due to the amount of internet threats. as with nowadays i configure my virus scanners to update daily, automatically. gamers who tweak their systems probably disable all this stuff to get the xtra 0.1ms out of their bootup speed to they can play quake as soon as possible wen they get home from skool, but thats their choice to put their system at risk. gape: i tried the above and it didnt help. still the same.
  11. my laptop was running flawlessly before applying the SP, so i dont see how the current running programs can be effecting it? ive used firefox before; google toolbar is installed to block popups. i can usually tell when spyware is being downloaded to my computers anyhow. I would prefer to trust a Microsoft product with secure connections when doing my online banking than a release candidate/preview edition of mozilla firefox. although it is a good browser, and many geeks are turning to it, im still sceptical of using it. im aware of IE having hundreds of security holes, as others should be that microsoft and its employees are smart and are most likely aware of them. if they were of a high security risk to the 80% of internet users running IE then they would bring out a critical update.
  12. i actually successfully installed IE6 SP1 on win me a few hours ago even after uninstalling IE 5.5. However i was unable to successfully replicate what i had done in the past.
  13. This makes no difference. This experience is bringing back memories of my last encounter with windows me...crashes...low resources in white boxes...lockups....explorer reloads...
  14. soldier1st: my laptop is a non mmx pentium 1. it dus not support 32bit cardbus cards. ie radicator and 98lite DOES work wonders for win me, tho im yet to see wonders in win98se. Tarun: attatched is the hijackthis log file. it seems all in order to me, nothing there that shouldnt be. i couldnt find my copy of hijackthis so i went to ure site to download it, and i couldnt download any files after clicking the buttons. perhaps there is a bug with the HTML code and IE6 SP2. Gape: i think that cbss.vxd file u reffered me to is for cardbus, not standard PCMCIA as i could not find a previous version of this file on my system, and the one i extracted did not overite any files. however i rebooted and tried this and no difference. found something else that was interesting as well. wen i went to system properties to check the resources again 3 times in 10 secs, each time the resources dropped by 15~% from the previous time. i ended up with 17% free! hijackthis.log
  15. yes, downloads all setup files. if some1 doesnt have internet access then they can obtain IE6 of a computer magazine cd or internet starter kit cd. or if that specific computer doesnt have access to the net and u can access it from somewhere else then u can follow the above steps n burn the files on a cd and take back to the computer u want to install it on.
  16. not true. there are command line switches which can allow you to download the FULL installation files for IE...you just gotta download ie6setup.exe. this is also possible with IE5.5 SP2 for windows ME but im not sure about 2000 or NT. download the ie6setup.exe file and alter the following line in the run box as u would need 2...(use quotes as provided). "C:\Downloads\ie6setup.exe" /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E" This will allow you to burn this to CD and use it later. This does not have to be done on the destination computer, it can be done on other computer. usually you will find the full installation of these files on Internet Starter CD's. I will see if i can re-construct the movements as described in my last post and i will report back later letting you all know how i went. if IE6 SP1 fails yet again, i will use IE6 as i originally did.
  17. soldier1st: i am experienced with using 98lite and havnt particularly noticed of much performance gain in on the systems i have used it on except when using the 95 shell. people can measure the 9 milliseconds of xtra speed gain with all their diagnostic and performance software all they want from using 98lite but that small speed gain aint particularly noticable to the user. i use the latest IE browser on all my systems which of course is IE6 SP1, and SP2 on XP (i dont care for alternatives). 1.6.2 is the version i was reffering to. mine is a Pentium 1 laptop and im guessing yours is a P2 or higher judging by the 32bit cardbus. Mine is obviously non-cardbus so perhaps this could be affecting it? i have no spyware on my system; hidden behind that system properties box is the latest version of ad-aware. im aware its reccommended to use combinations of other spyware programs, but personally i dont see the point. before some1 notices that i am not CURRENTLY using a resident virus scanner, i would like to comment that im aware of this and that its not a stupid move made by me or anyone if they no what they are doing. Tarun: I do have a copy of this program and i will attempt to re-install the SP and run this program, however i had trouble shutting down windows with only 33% in resources. i was unable to load the start menu so if im able to run this program i will post the log. Gape: I will try this and post my findings in my next post. im curious to know of where the updated files come from? they dont look to me like they are files u would like in the patches from windows update.
  18. I tried applying the latest SP 1.6.3 to my Compaq LTE 5300 laptop which i installed a clean install of 98 onto it about 2weeks ago. After a fresh boot i was only left with 33% in system resources. Usually its 94% without the service pack. I'm suspecting this to be something to with with the PC-CARD manager. I currently hav a Xircom RealPort 10/100 16bit in the PCMCIA slot. The only additional program that loads at startup was MSN messenger 6.2. Prior to installing the service pack my laptop contained all updates from windows update. i have installed this on 2 of my other systems and it works flawlessly. well done. i look forward to your ME service pack release
