what you must do is uninstall norton systemworks everytime you upgrade your os and get rid of all the files and registry keys then reinstall it after the upgrade is complete, the manual states that.
do it in this order
1:in add/remove remove all(norton systemworks)then restart.
2:double click on this registry key to remove all reg keys left by systemworks 2005.
3:delete the norton systemworks folder.
4:use any reg cleaner, preferably crap cleaner at http://www.ccleaner.com.
5:reinstall norton systemworks 2005
then update the hell out of it before you do anything else
my recomendation is to use norton antivirus 2002 instead of nav 2005
it has a few less features but doesen't slow the system up or take along time to start
just use systemworks 2005 for the rest except nav 2005

what version of windows are you running?if you can use xplite if you got xp or 2000 you can remove mdac and reinstall it

the only way to install xp from a usb hard drive is that the bios must support that function or feature in your case boot from a usb device or boot from usb
0 -
maybe the bios doesen't support that large of a hard drive, maybe update the bios to the latest and see what happens

tweaking the system.ini would be a good thing, also use 98lite to remove stuff, also is the computer ol or new?if it's old then thats probably it,only install apps your gonna use
-Establish a dial-up connection=give it time, does it freze before and after making a connection?
-Attach a USB hard drive=give it time, win 98 se takes time for usb hard drives, also what size is the hard drive?also what usb is it using?usb 1.1 is slow, usb 2.0 is faster, make sure your using the latest usb drivers
-Write a large file - it seems to buffer up to 500 MB of writes instantaneously and then thereafter it will lock up for 10 seconds while it actually does the writing.=how much memory do you have?also what are your system specs?my windows 98 se does that and it's on a fast computer and i got it fast,i think because windows 98 is built on top of dos, that may be a reason for it

also doesen't windows 98 not support drives past 137GB?

did you try beta 2 of sp 2.0?maybe that will help
also that error sounds to be a wrong setting in the bios
drive a is the floppy drive, try turning it offin the bios if you don't use it(hardly any1 uses it now)
also aol does suck for there internet connections
post some specs like what motherboard n stuff then we can help

i tried using 98lite micro
on startup it gave me explorer.exe errors n stuff=format
use ie iradicator instead to save yourself a format

98lite version 4.7 works with me so yea it is possible but me may not like you and crash on you till you put ie back

yes post his system.ini settings and he should try what i stated, that often helps, but if having more than 512 then take it out then after setting it higher put it back in

goto run/ type msconfig, under advanced for limit memory, raise that to 999 or use that unnoficial windows 98 se service pack that removes the 512 MB limit

it's the way it is
not much we or you can do about it

and bill gates doesen't care about windows 98 se now, only xp and server 2003 and ick longhorn, right now i hate longhorn for everything it is,too complicated interface, stuff kinda works on it and takes so long to bootup even on a fast computer
windows 98 se is not dead,i tell ppl that n they glare like it is dead, and if you keep good updated software around that you will use it will help more than hurt
also you really don't need an antivirus for windows 98 since many ppl go after the nt based oses,i know a business that uses windows 98 se and he hates xp,it would cost him too much to goto xp( i get parts from him cheaper than anywhere)if you remove ie 5 from windows 98 se then put ie6sp1 it works best since it doesen't have the older files, also using 98lite can remove more windows 98 fluff than normaly,i use windows update all the time and it is great for me,also i do recommend you use it 1.6.2 since the service packs are cumulative,no need to uninstall it just install it over top,but if you install it you'll have a windows update bug that can be fixed, there is a beta version of the sp but i've had problems with it,if you like the windows me desktop icons then install it,if you don't then wait since 1.6.2 doesen't give you the option to not install the newer icons and the new one will give you the choice of installing the newer icons & the windows 2000 color scheme or not(it's a bit more lighter than the windows 98 one)you could always switch back if you don't like the color scheme under apearances just go there and you'll have the taskbar looking like before.hope that helps

i have 512 pc3200 ddr 400(being used to it's full capacity)there are no problems or stabilty problems so i go for more speed,if problems arise i revert what i previously did,the comps i make now come with with w2k or xp,not 98 se
i plan to upgrade to 1 GB someday

well a simple fix for xp is to remove system restore not just disable it
norton goback is kinda like system restore

the drivers you get from the manufacturer instead of microsofts are fat better
he is probably using microsofts generic or connexent drivers
the drive error means he has his floppy set wrong in the bios
what kind of floppy is it?is it a 5/25 inch or a 3/one half?
i've used the sp on many older windows 98 se pcs and i never get this problem
well here in canada not many ppl use a floppy but a floppy is a good thing to have around just in case
if nothing else format it and put the sp after installing new ie then install directx and newest drivers then install your apps
i did it a different way and it messed it up so thats the way i recommend
