I think he is talking about when explorer is dead, how do you get it to start again without the 2k/xp taskmanager's "Start New Task" option?
Yes. It have "Start New Task" option.

http://rapidshare.de/files/881543/TASKMGR.zip.html (15KB!!!)
Finally i've translated (it took me whole 5 min) my simple "Task Manager".
The main benefit is that it replaces standard ctrl-alt-del taskmanager and can help even when all your programs dead.
Install: extract into \system directory. Add "device=taskmgr.vxd" to [386Enh] section of system.ini. Reboot. (Uninstall: delete files. Remove line.)
You can replace Taskmgr.exe with another good task/process manager. Just put it in your %PATH%.
If you know good task/process manager, please tell me.

In Russia, no legal software exist. So almost all my friends run XP to be with progress.

In setup files - maybe; but latest cumulative updates files for IE6 SP1 are fully compatible with 98 and 2000. Windows 9x is limited by nature, and memory leaks are fatal for it, but 2k not - that's the point for hanging.

Here:

my hack allows XP 32-bit icons with shadow to be drawn. don't sure if it ever allow to skin windows, but anyway you may try

Actually i believe Windows 9x/Me and 2000 use same IE6 SP1 code. So after 2006 security patches for IE6 SP1 for 2000 will be compatible with w9x/me.

Windows 9x support install/boot only on primary partition.
If you're using NTFS on Primary partition, second FAT(32) Primary partiton must be created. Main Primary partition should be inactive and hidden to minimize data loss risk.
If you're using FAT(32), you should install 9x on it.
Use "Install Operating System" wizard in PowerQuest Partiton Magic. It will do everything automatically. Do not forget to create rescue disks!

I need to report a bug in 9x drivers (see Revolutions Pack topic)
I've requested their support as pre-purchase question, but they didn't answered.
Its a serious bug and needs to be fixed. May someone provide his CCID/login to ask that question? Or there is another way to contact nvidia?

Give me the name of one product that can do what Preimere does... Preimere is one of the best for what it does. I don't have problems with it in XP. It's Windows 98 that I had the problems with it. Windows 98 runs everything in the same memory space, so when one thing crashes everything crashes. Windows XP runs everything in seperate protected memory spaces, so when one thing crashes, only that one thing crashes, not the whole system.
IMHO Ulead MediaStudio Pro. I like it very mush.

Under Explorer, if I do Tools/Folder Options/View, under "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" there is an option called "ioaiooiaioeoieioaoie...." except there are strange marks over the ioaea and eaoieo parts
I know I've been installing a lot of different things, but I was wondering if anyone else has seen this.
After installing my pack, mydocs.dll is mistakenly contains 1 russian string.
It means "Show My Documents on Desktop"

But what if I want to have freeware hooked up to Ctrl-Alt-Del keystroke? I believe Tihiy mentioned he had a hack for that..
There are some programs that can do that, but they aren't free.
AMN Task Manager was a great but shareware tool that offered stability for 9x/Me, but now their site is gone and i believe their company too.
I have my implementation of Ctrl-Alt-Del hooking, but they have better - taskmanager worked even in text mode if whole system crashes. I don't know if it legal to use portions of dead software, it would be great if I'll manage with it.
If not, i'll release my taskmanager as soon as it'll be translated.

hey mdgx if i were to get that explorer.exe and comdlg.dll and shell32.dll from another windows 98 pc that is setup similar would it fix the find files and folders problem or would it be impossible to do it?
Yes. Or restore them from 98 CD. After repalcing them back, run
regsvr32 shdoc401.dll
regsvr32 shell32.dll
regsvr32 /i /n shdoc401.dll
regsvr32 /i /n shell32.dll

Ok, i've a problem and can't release program without solving it. Restorator 2004 suddenly corrupts 9x/Me DLL files if replacing icons with 32bit analog, so i can't create universal ResPatcher... Any ideas?
ALSO: didn't understand about UXTHEMES. I don't sure, but it will provide additional compatibility with WindowBlinds, and not any other theming engines now.

Ok, very good news: i've been tracing nasty bug that not allowed dragging icons for 3 days, and now that bug is gone. I'm so ******g happy! Expect a BETA release today.

I am using ie6 with service pack 1, Thanks.
It should work on IE6SP1 + any updates. Try to extract .exe into some temp. directory and run .bat file. Then look onto browseui.dll/shdocvw.dll files size (they should be copied into that folder). It must change. If it won't fix, wait for next version of that patch, it'll be safer.

Hm. I've found some information in Russian, because in original it is Russian patch.
It doesn't include IE5, MDAC2.6, MSI, JET3.5 updates, does not support rollback (uninstallation). Does include ATA drives assignment patch + some Russian-specified fixes.

Ok, some good news again. I've almost rewritten it. Although currently there are some stability/perfomance problems, but i sure they're all fixable. 32-bit color is now supported almost anywhere in 32-bit app: in toolbars (i'm making new toolbar hack too), listviews, treeviews and such. It wasn't so hard (about 1000 lines of code) and that proves again that Microsoft is playing unfair game. I'm going to take a break now (passing exams) and i think i'll release it on the weekend.
Any name suggestions?

I get screwed up grey icons (win98). I have all the latest updates plus sp2rc1.
IE exact version?

Some good news. I've done a lot of hard work and haven't found unsolvable problems so far, there's may be a pre-release tomorrow. If everything goes fine, i'll also add new icons/bitmaps (including xp toolbar buttons patch) to final version, as optional components.

Firewall For Win9x/me
in Windows 9x/ME
Posted
Ok, i'm gonna to write Security Center analog for Win9x (please do not ask why) and I need some information about most popular firewalls.
- Which firewall are you using? (name, vendor, version)
- main executable filename (in which directory by default?)
- main "service" executable filename (if exists)
- does it add control panel element and if adds, try to find which .cpl does this
This information is important for me. If you can find some similar info about antivirus/anti-trojan programs, I'll be very grateful.
