  1. My swap partition (2 GB FAT16) has a large swap file on it. I get constant "low disk space" warnings asking if I want to do Disk Cleanup. Is there any way to shut this off?
  2. Hi, is there anyway to extract a bunch of archives into the same place, WITHOUT overwriting newer files with older files? In other words, if you have a bunch of files, how can you get the set of all unique file names with the newest choices only when there is a conflict? I have a few GB of archives (mostly ZIP) and the best tool for extracting them seems to be TUGZip. However, of all the tools I tried (TUGZip, IZarc, ZipGenius, PowerArchiver, 7zip) there is no automatic option like "always overwrite older files". Also, extracting into different directories and using Windows Explorer to merge the directories doesn't help, Windows just wants to overwrite everything. Any ideas?
  3. Does anyone know which OS's ATI X1800 is compatible with? Will it work with DOS 7.1 (from 98 SE) / 98 SE / ME / 2K / Linux? Or only XP and 2003 as claimed? Thanx.
  4. Does anyone know how to automate installation of VIA USB 2.0 drivers, e.g. with nLite? There seems to be no inf file.
  5. I have a "Samsung Yp-55" - a portable hard drive / digital music player. It's not working under a fresh install of Win 2K SP4, with USP5.0SR1. I have a VIA motherboard and the latest VIA USB 2.0 drivers installed. This doesn't help. Also I installed the Yp-55 drivers. I try to select either USB Mass Storage drivers and Yp-55 drivers, or try to select driver files manually; but it keeps claiming that the best drivers are c:\winnt\drivers\usb.inf. Changing the inf dates doesn't fool it into thinking they are better. Whenever I try to change the drivers it wants a reboot but the device always has a question mark on it when it boots up. It says something like the device failed to start. The application for stopping attached devices starts up when I insert the device, but it also shows a yellow question mark next to the device. So far I've been having to boot into Windows 98 SE to use this device. Any ideas?
  6. When I install Win2KSP4 it wants to format 190 GB and it takes about an hour. Is there anyway to do a "quick" format? Further annoyances: If I shut my computer down and restart while it is reformatting, leading to a "damaged" partition, or sometimes if I just have pre-existing FAT32 partitions, it won't recognize all of the disk. So I have to reboot into DOS 7.1 and use Ranish Partition manager to fix the disk up for it Furthermore, it claims the disk is only 127 GB but it will go ahead and add 190 GB partition to it. I assume this is some residual 48-bit LBA bug that MS never fixed...
  7. FYI that doesn't show Windows adoption. It shows the browser-reported Windows usage among users who frequently browse the Internet, who do not have thecounter.com blocked from their HOSTS file It's interesting, though.
  8. I installed a fresh Win2KProSP4 followed by USP5SR1. Then I tried AutoPatcher 2000 October. AP2000 offered a lot of "patches" - .NET Framework, DX9, WMP9, etc.. as well as a lot of hotfixes. AP2000 sees some hotfixes as installed already, and a lot as non-installed. Some hotfixes pertain to DX9, WMP9, etc.. but a lot of the non-installed hotfixes were labeled "Win 2000 security update". Why is this? I'm assuming it's one of these reasons: 1. USP5SR1 doesn't contain all the latest win 2000 hotfixes? 2. USP5SR1 contains those updates, but they are misidentified so AP2000 wants to reinstall them? 3. Those hotfixes were mislabeled in AP2000, and really pertain to DX9 / something else? Anyone know? Also, AP2000 wants to install Rollup1 V2. I assume all of that is already installed by USP5SR1 except for the undesired beta kernel mode driver thingy that Gurgelmeyer warned us about.
  9. I don't know about the card's support for DOS 7 I mean 98 SE's DOS - e.g. press F8 while booting and choose command prompt only. I doubt any Audigy drivers suport this mode. I have an SB AWE64 gold - I wonder how good it is? - but its ISA only so I haven't used it yet How long do you keep your OS's installed? I've used 98 SE on my home PC for about 6 years (since it came out). Lately, I've been trying 98 SE, 2K, and different Linuces and have been changing every few days FYI, I tried Linux 11 years ago and I don't like it any better today. I'm considering XP. I have a valid license and key but I really resent being hassled with cd key + activation + genuinecheck stupidity. I'm not into cracks either. I might just give Windows Neptune a shot.
  10. I've thought about this for a while. Just using SYS to install IO.SYS and COMMAND.COM is too easy. What I want is the best installation of DOS 7.1 I can get, excluding all non-DOS files. The point is to have a nice 9x DOS environment for playing DOS games when I'm not using Win 2K. So, Windows\smartdrv.exe should be retained, but Windows\notepad.exe should be deleted. I tested a bunch of exes in the windows directly manually and unexpectedly found several that are usable from DOS mode. The logos are still usable. There are also a lot of windows\*.txt files that pertain to DOS usage. The WAV's are still usable (I have a DOS-compatible sound card) but not of much value really. I think to do this I will install 98 SE 98 SE USP2.02 98SE2ME olddos.exe and dossup.exe (I can't remember the names exactly, but I have these two DOS 7.1-related packages from Microsoft's ftp site) 3xStart? XXCOPY? I could go crazy installing lots of nice tools like savepart, Ranish partition manager, NANSI, etc.. AVGFreeEdition's boot-time anti-virus scanning could be installed, though this would have to happen before Windows support is removed since the installer is Windows-only. Then I will clean out irrelevant files. Is anyone else interested in this? Or has someone done this sort of thing before? I am not sure how to distribute the results of the work. Just a TXT file listing the relevant files might be useful. Maybe a BAT file doing the work would be good. Is osbetaarchives is a better place to discuss this?
  11. One week I'm using 98SE, the next week im back on 2000. You mean you keep a single OS installed for a whole week? BTW I am interested in which sound cards ppl use with 9x. The Creative Soundblaster Live Value! is one of the best cards that still has DOS 7 / 9x / 2K (XP?) support. The one I use is CT4830 (some kind of OEM card I think), there are other Live! Value's that are different part numbers internally and I am not sure how well they work. Creative support told me that the SoundBlaster Live! SB0060 is their newest card with DOS support, but I bought one and it had multiple part number labellings all over it (on the box and the card) including SB0060 and SB0220. The POS didn't have DOS support and was actually worse than the older Creative card so I gave it away If anyone knows of a better sound card for DOS 7 than CT4830, please let everyone know.
  12. MSI K8T Neo Fis2R (MS-6702), Athlon64 3400+, 2x512 MB DDR400 NVIDIA GeForce 5900 Ultra 256 MB 200 GB PATA100 10K RPM, 100 GB PATA100 (? RPM) SoundBlaster Live! Value (CT4830)
  13. Actually this looks like a good start... this gets 98 SE down to about 4.38 MB: http://www.etek.chalmers.se/~e8gus/nano98/
  14. Is there a way to strip down 98 SE so its nothing but a DOS shell? I'm using Win2K now and it's not very compatible with some DOS games I'd like to run (for example, Tyrian 2000). I tried DOSBox emulator but it's ridiculously slow, even though my CPU is Athlon 64 3400+. The best way to run DOS games seems to be to dualboot 98, but I only need the DOS portions from it. Is a stripped down ME a better idea? Any other suggestions? Thanks!
  15. venice 3000/3200 But the CPU I'm using right now is socket 754 Athlon 3400. So you are suggesting I get a new motherboard (socket 939) and then get a slower processor? Seems a bit odd. Thanks guys, I think I will either sell the ATI X1800 or will wait a few months and then upgrade everything else.
  16. Hi, I have this PC: MSI K8T Neo Fis2R (MS-6702) Athlon64 3400+ (socket 754, 2.4 GHz 512 KB cache - NewCastle?) NVIDIA GeForce 5900 Ultra 256 MB (AGP 8x) 2 x 512 MB RAM DDR400 (generic brand, 8-3-3-3 or something) I recently got a ATI X1800 256 MB, but I can't use it yet since it's PCIx. Should I get a mobo with 754 and PCIx? This would probably only cost $70. Or should I dump the CPU and mobo (and memory?) and get a 939 socket CPU? My CPU seems a bit slow trying to run games like Morrowind (this game really drains your CPU power), but even the fastest CPU's aren't much faster than mine, I think. So for a $70 socket-754 mobo I might get by for another year or so.. Thanks!
  17. I use IZArc and TUGZip all the time. Each is excellent, but not perfect enough to choose it over the other. Iceows also deals with a lot of different compression format, but it is crappier if I recall correctly. Then there are the tools like PowerArchiver and ZipGenius which are pure bloatware. Why does anyone make rar files anymore? 7z files are more compact and the 7zip tools are completely free.
  18. my girlfriend told me its not the size of the HD its how you use it What if you only have a floppy? I have 200 gb and 100 gb hd for a total of 300 GB. I use only about 50% of the total space but I place things on both drives to (hopefully) speed up access. I have 45 GB of backups (mostly software CD's, software, game mods, soundfonts, and music). I can mount the CD images as virtual CD rom drives using Daemon tools. Actually, I have this 45 GB on each drive in case one blows up. So there goes 90 GB. Approximately 20 GB is for some miscellaneous partitions I have (I dual-booted Win 98 and 64-bit Linux for a while, so I had a lot of partitions such as swap, temp, var, etc). I probably only use about 30 GB for my main OS partition at any time. I reformat now and then, but If I installed and extracted everything at once then my 300 GB would probably fill up.
  19. I'm going to try Win2K Pro (for gaming + development) and had some questions... 1. Does 2K have any problem with the >128 GiB hard disk barrier (lack of 48-bit LBA access)? I know XP pre-SP1 has this problem and I'm wondering if 2K SP4 has it as well? 2. Should I reformat my HD to use NTFS? Should I use a program like Ranish partition manager? Or is it better to boot from the CD and do this? I'm keeping all my backups in a FAT32 format (easy for data recovery) but I'm willing to try anything on my OS partition to increase efficiency. 3. I have a 2 GB FAT16 swap partition on a different HD right now, should I use that as swap? Or reformat that partition as NTFS as well? What's most efficient? 4. Does 2K SP4 have good support for USB and TWAIN devices? I'm worried about whether my hardware will work right away. 5. Is it safe to assume that DOS programs will basically be busted? Are there any worthwhile DOS emulators (e.g. for games like DOOM) or should I just forsake DOS programs entirely? 6. Is it a good idea to use AutoPatcher 2000? I want Win2K SP4 + Update Rollup 1 v2 + Dx9.0c + IE6sp1, and it looks like AutoPatcher 2000 can help get there. 7. I've been using mostly either XP or a 98 SE / ME hybrid, will there be any nasty surprises with switching to 2K? Thanks!
  20. Thanks guys. I think I'll probably switch from 98 SE to 2K Pro. Is 2K good with DOS games, or is it best to dualboot 98 SE / 2K? And my 64-bit Linux distro is full of bugs and needs to die - I can't stand having a continual mishmash of non-alpha and alpha software and the endless babysitting of configuration files is tiring. Also it can't play Morrowind natively. I don't trust / want to pay for WINE / Cedega.
  21. sounds like you are afraid of M$ finding out you use a pirated version they can't get past activation Whatever, I feel sorry that you can stoop low enough to subject yourself to being treated like a criminal and pay hundreds of dollars for a self-destructing coaster. It will get even worse with Vista. If you want a free OS that doesn't need activation, go for Ubuntu or Suse. Are you honestly suggesting these are the best OS's for gaming? I have had 64-bit linux installed for a long time and I can safely say it's not the best for gaming. Also, a lot of OS's do not require activation (though most aren't free): 98, ME, and 2K. Please stop straying off topic. The title of this thread is "Best OS for gaming (excluding XP)".
  22. If you don't want to activate each time Look, I don't want to activate, meaning even once. Why is it so hard to stay on-topic? I am interested in non-XP OS's only.
  23. you'd only need to activate it again if you reformat your HD. Changing hardware doesn't affect activation But dude, I change my HD's + OS's all the time. That's why I DON'T want to use XP. Anyone have an on-topic (i.e. non-XP) suggestion? Thanks!
  24. I thought nLite just makes XP smaller? I change hardware a lot and don't want to need activation all the time. nLite can help solve this problem?
  25. Ignoring XP, which OS is best for gaming? 2K Advanced Server? 2K professional edition? Something else? FYI I don't like XP because I don't agree with the instrusive activation system.
