  1. Yes. Probably there will be a way to bypass these requirements, just like the Ram. When I had an Asustek L8400C with 128 MB of Ram, it was easy to modify the "Winsetup.dll" and install Vista and 7 Pre-RC onto that notebook, using vLite. At that time I was lucky to have a notebook from 2001. It had the drivers for the 9x and NT OSes. Good old times.
  2. Here I am explaining why you can't install the new Windows 8 on many Pentium 4 and Athlon 64 processors. The first limitation introduced in Windows 8 is the Physical Address Extension (PAE) requirement. While you can install Windows XP, Vista and 7 on the original Intel Pentium for testing purposes, the PAE was implemented first in the Intel Pentium Pro in 1995. Therefore this first limitation make the older Pentium too obsolete to install Windows 8. The second limitation introduced is the Streaming SIMD Extensions 2 (SSE2) requirement. It was introduced with the Intel Pentium 4 in late 2000. This limitation make the Intel Pentium II, III and their AMD competitors of the late 90s and early 2000s too obsolete to install Windows 8. The third limitation is the Never eXecute (NX bit) requirement. It was introduced around 2003, but since at that time many processors were sold without this technology, many Pentium 4 and Athlon XP are too obsolete to install Windows 8. At the software level, it was implemented from Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 SP1. Therefore, Windows 8 can be installed if you have a processor from about 2004 or newer.
  3. Surely there are many free/open source programs which can substitute the Windows Calendar. Go to get one of them.
  4. The HDD is still divided in two partitions. Windows 2000 SP4 English (UR1 + UR2 + UURollup 10b + One piece's Windows 2000 postSP4 Update Pack) is installed in C: (39,9 GB) WIndows XP SP3 Italian is installed in D: (192 GB) Windows 2K has the default IDE Driver installed. Probably I must use the Intel Chipset Driver provided by Acer.
  5. This is the situation on Windows XP SP3 Italian http://i48.tinypic.com/22ccw0.jpg I thought that the same behaviour can be replicated on Windows 2000 (ACPI Multiprocessor with the three files selected by default) but I was wrong. Maybe I must accept the normal ACPI on 2K, although it is not the best solution. Sometimes Windows 2000 don't shutdown or restart correctly. When this behaviour happens, I see the black screen (with or without the blinking cursor) and I must turn off the computer manually.
  6. The Vista Sidebar can be used on XP, including the Calendar Gadget, but you cannot use the Vista Calendar itself.
  7. Before installing again Windows 2000, I have checked the ACPI Multiprocessor files which XP SP3 was using. It was really strange to see the default files used in normal ACPI by XP Hal.dll ntkrnlpa.exe ntoskrnl.exe There's a way to install "ACPI Multiprocessor" while maintaining the three files mentioned?
  8. My webcam works fine in Windows XP using the usbvideo.sys How can I install it on windows 2000? Just importing the related usbvideo.inf?
  9. I have tried to change the hal, but Windows 2000 didn't boot. My video card is Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 My bios is Insyde H2O Bios (v 1.26) And the VGA Bios version is Intel V2001 Do you refer as "Atom VGA Drivers" the video card? If yes, the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 works fine on Windows 2K.
  10. There is a kernel and/or hal update which can use the two threads of the Intel Atom processors? The single core is not good, because it suffers too much. I do not search the Atom VGA drivers.
  11. Intelppm.sys is the SpeedStep driver. I doubt adding a (patched?) intelppm.sys would change situation. Most likely combination BIOS, kernel and hal is the issue. Probably an update of the kernel's and hal's files can solve the issue.
  12. Hello everybody, As I said on another thread I have, unfortunately, an Intel Atom N450 http://ark.intel.com/products/42503/ and I cannot use both cores on Windows 2000. Windows 2000 selects automatically "ACPI Multiprocessor" during the text mode, then stops working after loading the drivers. It is strange, because with other modern processors (recent Intel Pentium and Intel Core i3) the setup detects automatically the processor without problems. Looking on the Insyde H2O Bios (v 1.26) I have seen this information VGA Bios version: Intel V2001 Looking more deeply on Windows XP SP3, I have found more informations: ID: ACPI\\GENUINEINTEL_-_X86_FAMILY_6_MODEL_28\_0 and \_1, depending from the core. Driver: Intelppm.sys I have seen that there's no Intelppm.sys on Windows 2000. Few days ago I have seen this topic And I thought: If the cpu.inf and the intelppm.sys will be backported into Windows 2000, they would be useful to me. Am I wrong? P.S. I don't want to spam nor to bother everybody with this argument, but it's important for me.
  13. I have done the trick It's interesting for me with a tunnel broker (for the people which still have only IPv4 support) you can surf in IPv6 on Windows 2000
  14. The only thing I can say is this: The Windows XP loads correctly the driver for the Intel Atom, using Intelppm.sys. As far as I know, Windows 2000 don't have that driver, then stops working after loading the drivers in text mode. In some way we must integrate this driver. It would be helpful for me.
  15. I have returned to XP because the system was again compromised when I used this procedure. I'll talk about the problematic hyperthreading on my Intel Atom on a totally separate thread, which will be only CPU-related.
  16. I removed these updates UURollup (Global) Windows2000-KB935839-v10b-x86-ITA.EXE Windows2000-KB979683-v8-x86-ITA.exe And I have installed the English version of the UURollup. Now I'm writing from Firefox 14. I know that the unofficial updates aren't tested, unlike the official ones, but I think that the UURollup must be a little more optimized for performance, with less consumption of the processor. But it's only my suggestion. Now I am trying to solve the problem about the ACPI. I have tried to boot the system with ACPI Uniprocessor [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional (ACPI Uniprocessor)" /fastdetect /hal=halaacpi.dll /kernel=ntoskrnl.exe But it failed. Maybe the system cannot use others hal and kernel than the default ones (Hal.dll, ntkrnlpa.exe, ntoskrnl.exe). Therefore, a way to boot the system can be to rename the files Halaacpi.dll (or halmacpi.dll) to hal.dll Ntkrnlmp.exe to ntoskrnl.exe ntkrpamp.exe (in case of using ACPI Multiprocessor) to ntkrnlpa.exe I don't know if worked or failed, but i have seen the computer a bit slower when I have installed the Intel Speedstep, then I have uninstalled it. The combination of the power management is Portable/Laptop.
  17. I have downgraded two times on my netbook. First from the slow Windows 7 to the faster XP, and second from XP to 2000. The only thing missing is, aside my webcam, the other core of the Intel Atom.
  18. Some time ago, when I was surfing into the net with my old desktop pc, I have downloaded the IPv6 Technology Preview for Windows 2000 from this link http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=21676 Now, checking again this site, I viewed this message "We are sorry, the page you requested cannot be found." I have found the file on 4shared, but they are trying to move the customers to their new sh**ty OSes. I'm beginning to hate the Micro$oft. Why don't they simply keep the updates somewhere on their servers?.
  19. http://www.crocko.com/2E4BD9F9524149AFAB59B78C800EEE73/ie6setup.rar This is a package which contain Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and Outlook Express 6 for Windows 2000/XP in Italian. http://www.oldapps.com/internet_explorer.php?old_internet_explorer=11 This is the full package of IE6 http://www.mediafire.com/?42fmogldfs2 This is the package of IE 6 SP1 for Windows 98 in Italian.
  20. Excuse that please...l have cds/discs that you place in the disc drive drawer to save/read data....CD Roms? If l save my data on a disc thats been formated to my XP pc, can l just put that cd into a new Windows 7 disc and it will read it? Thanks for your time and patience. Your CDs can be read on Windows 7.
  21. Thanks. Now the temperatures of the processor and the diode are normal Before applying the patch Processor: 28°C Diode: 95° C After applying the patch Processor: 47°C Diode: 80° C at this moment. This is my choice but I didn't knew Blackwingcat updated the HAL files. Maybe with those HAL I can use "ACPI Multiprocessor" Among his articles, I have seen an Intel Atom Z520 (HT) working with Windows 2000. http://blog.livedoor.jp/blackwingcat/archives/08995.html Did he used "ACPI Multiprocessor"? If yes, then it's possible. Edit: I have installed the unofficial updates in this way UURollup (Global) Windows2000-KB935839-v10b-x86-ITA.EXE Windows2000-KB979683-v8-x86-ITA.exe And the system still boots up, but slower than before. In the System Properties the words "Service Pack" disappeared. It remains only the number 4. http://i50.tinypic.com/1zdr7s7.jpg Maybe (but I'm not sure) I must remove these updates from the latest which I've installed, and install the UURollup (English). I used the drivers provided by Acer http://www.acer.it/ac/it/IT/content/drivers Go to Netbook > Aspire One > AO532H Then select "Windows XP Home Edition" and download the Atheros Wireless driver and the Atheros Lan Card Wireless After installing wireless driver you must install the Atheros Client Utility (not included into the driver, as far as i know) If after configuring the wireless network with the program you can go only to 192.168.1.1 follow the procedure of the KB318584 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318584 And then you can surf the net When booting the netbook the wireless card connects automatically, like in XP LAN If after installing the Lan driver you can go only to 192.168.1.1 follow the same procedure. Do you mean the restore thing?
  22. Probably I'll go back to XP until someone will get the solution about the multi core on a Atom processor. The diode of the processor go to about 95° C against the more normal 87° C when using Windows XP in dual core. The ambiental temperature is about 32° C and, when the diode reached the 87° C, there were about 38-40° C at the beginning of August. The single core suffers as hell.
  23. Ask again in 2015. Are you stating that XP will supported until 2019? The version 5 of the kernel NT will die in 2019. If the updates of Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 will be backported into the normal XP, we can have all the updates until that year.
  24. I made a mistake. I said "ACPI Uniprocessor" instead of "ACPI Multiprocessor" but selecting both ACPI the Windows 2000 setup fails to start. The version of the hal.dll is 5.0.2195.6691 Now I have installed Windows 2000 SP4 Italian OEM + Update Rollup 1 + all security updates until July 2010. Despite of being OEM, it's integral. The Bios is "Insyde H2O" version 1.26 (updated from previous 1.21) I can try to boot the others ACPI. I don't know if installing Windows 2000 on a recent Pentium with dual core can start from this netbook with the Multiprocessor thing. But, if I'll have the opportunity, I'll try to do this. Where I can found the SpeedStep driver?
  25. That's good for me. If I knew before asking the help of the MSFN community, I could save a lot of time. The Hal was selected manually because the Windows 2000 setup selects automatically "ACPI uniprocessor" and simply freezes. The IDE mode isn't really a big deal. In Windows XP the IDE mode was a bit slower than the AHCI mode. My CPU is an Intel Atom N450 http://ark.intel.com/products/42503/
