  1. What value would you expect to see for an 8GB hibernation file?
  2. Removing the Intel Rapid Storage Technology software corrected the constant disk activity. However, after removal, the computer would not resume from hibernate. The computer would reboot shortly after displaying the "Resuming Windows" splash screen. I attempted to run the hibernation boot trace 4 times. In each case the computer would reboot during resume. I re-installed the Intel Rapid Storage driver (iastor.sys) alone, without installing the full software package. Constant disk activity became a problem again, but I was able to resume from hibernate. Strangely enough, if I remove the DVD burner from the laptop, I no longer experience constant disk activity with the iastore.sys driver. Disabling the DVD burner in Device Manager also correct the disk activity problem. Attached are my new trace summaries with the DVD burner disabled. Let me know if you need the full ETL's. summary_shutdown.xml summary_hibernation.xml
  3. I think i found the culprit of my disk activity problem. Looks like it was the Intel Rapid Storage Technology package. I will repost traces later this evening.
  4. Is there any way to correct the hanging services? No updates were being installed during the shutdown process. The HDD *is* busy all the time. If the computer is turned on, even when idle, every second or so the HDD indicator LED will flash. This is even after the laptop has been on for several hours and idle. I have been unable to determine what is causing this. Is there anyway to speed up the write time of the hibernation file? Could this be due to having a large amount of memory installed?
  5. Andre: You referred me to this thread after helping me speed up my Windows 7 boot times tremendously. Would you mind analyzing the following traces and see if there is any room for improvement? 6. if you really need all tools at startup this is the best time you can get because the startup tools delay your boot for 20s: postBootDisturbance="20200" Where in the summary can I find the software that is calculated in the postBootDisturbance? I have made more modifications without affecting my backup clients, VPN client, or encryption software. bootDoneViaPostBoot="42771" osLoaderDuration="2638" postBootRequiredIdleTime="10000" postBootDisturbance="2900" This is a HUGE improvement over my original values: bootDoneViaPostBoot="1489166" osLoaderDuration="2779" postBootRequiredIdleTime="10000" postBootDisturbance="48000" I cannot thank enough for your time and advice in helping me resolve my infuriating boot times. Do you know of a resource for decrease shutdown times? Hebram
  7. On second thought, I can probably make a scheduled task that turns up the Windows Home Server services and launch the client shortly before it is needed for the nightly backup. I will tackle that after I ferret out more startup items.
  8. Thank you. I read it over a few times and couldn't find it an area clustering these processes. I will see what I can do about slimming down startup items more. Already I am seeing a tremendous improvement in boot time. There are several packages that I need, such as Carbonite (offsite backup to cloud), Window Home Server (onsite backup to fileserver), and Truecrypt (whole disk encryption).

  10. Here are my latest results after cleaning up more software. http://www.mediafire.com/?j5psvcx5829yxkx [http://www.mediafire.com/?x3v50elr03qcc2c Even with a 59 sec boot, there still seems room for improvement. Any suggestions? (Edit: I neglected to subtract the postBootRequiredIdleTime of 10 seconds. That would put me at a 49 second boot. Is this about the best I can expect?) Hebram
  11. This is a Lenovo laptop. The HDD is connected to an onboard Intel 5 Series 6 SATA controller. I will try to reduce the number of tools and post another summary. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Hebram
  12. Andre: I ended up removing alot of software that I don't need anymore and ran another optimization. See below for the new summaries: http://www.mediafire.com/?3y6rvz87djrxddf http://www.mediafire.com/?5o5go65o69nkn78 Here is a full boot trace made after the optimization above: http://www.mediafire.com/?6hg4c8mtmv8b1u2 Thank you for your assistance, Hebram
