Look under my avatar, below where it says "MSFN Sponsor." There's a little plus sign followed by a number. Hovering over it reveals a black balloon that says, "Member's total reputation." What would one do to help this number go up (or down ) ? --JorgeA
-
I just noticed the "reputation" number below my avatar. Can'remember if it was there before the board update. What affects whether this number goes up or down? Thanks! --JorgeA

Yes, pop-up notifications are what I remember from using Linux, and then only when I first boot into the OS. But no forced updates. AFAIK, any 'tards saying otherwise are indeed pulling it out of their a**es. That's not to say that no such version of Linux exists (there IS a lot of variety in that universe), but it's far from being standard practice in the penguin community, and to say that "Linux does forced updates too" would be a gross misrepresentation. --JorgeA

Just for the record -- it was @Drugwash who wrote that paragraph, not me. But thanks for the info, that should help Drugwash (and it was educational for me). --JorgeA

Which versions of Linux are said to be forcing updates automatically? I've used Zorin OS and Netrunner, and neither of them forced the user to install new updates. --JorgeA

I remember seeing something about that the first time I logged in today following the board update. I went back into the notification settings, and while it tells me that I've enabled these browser notifications with a big check mark over on the right, I haven't found a way to disable them if so wished. it all happened so fast, I'm not even sure if it was a browser setting or an MSFN account setting. Don't give up yet -- we'll miss you! --JorgeA

Excellent -- thank you, xper!! --JorgeA

Yes, something like that. With additional standard typeface options, like the previous versions of the board software include. --JorgeA

A victim of MicroBorg assimilation declares: Microsoft knows what's best for you -- stop fighting Windows 10 Nothing from the article itself worth quoting here, but he gets rightly skewered in the comments. My favorite one, though, isn't a criticism of the article but a set of observations about Windows 10 that closely tracks my own views -- --JorgeA

^^ LOL Do you know if it's a matter of @xper's flipping a switch somewhere or tweaking a setting to re-enable font selection, or does the New & Improved Board SoftwareTM simply lack that option altogether? It would be really clunky to have to create a post in a word processor first, only to then insert it into the reply box here. --JorgeA

Not sure if this is a bug/error, or if it belongs in the "how-to's" thread, but here goes: How does one change the typeface used in a post? Note that I'm not referring to using boldfacing, coloring, or strikeouts -- I mean changing from Arial (or whatever this current font is) to, say, Times Roman. Posting here in case it's a bug or an oversight. --JorgeA

All right, Trip's images do show up in QtWeb. Thanks, jaclaz. The question now becomes, how to make them display properly in Pale Moon. --JorgeA UPDATE: Well, what do you know -- when this page refreshed after submitting this post, both Trip's and bphlpt's images showed up.
-
I have no idea how you managed to get the full link. I'm using Pale Moon (fully up to date) to view MSFN. It's ridiculous that the board software would not work properly on a modern browser. Will try that portable browser you suggest, but it would be tedious and annoying as all h3ll to have to open a dedicated browser just to view MSFN properly. --JorgeA

Looks like at least one of my posts got lost in the IPB update. I remember distinctly replying to this post. Anyway, that was pretty funny. --JorgeA

The images are hosted on photobucket : hxxp://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k63/Tripredacus/streams2_zps7pcvjlw2.jpg and often that doesn't play well with all browsers. (it's OK with Chrome derivatives and QTWeb, but not with my Opera). Welcome to the new internet, where after years of standardization everything is more difficult, incompatible or both. jaclaz The problem is, there is no URL, let alone a hyperlink underline. All it looks like to me is the isolated filename of a JPG file: I am shown no way to view the file. Here's a screenshot of what Trip's and bphlpt's JPG files look like on my monitor: (Well, OK, I can't figure out how to make the screenshot show up embedded in the post. It doesn't show up when I click on "Preview Post".) --JorgeA (OK, somehow the screenshot did show up correctly.)
-
Yes, exactly. Their filenames begin with "streams1" and "streams2". And there's something at the bottom of your own post that reads "yEv6k.jpg". --JorgeA
-
How does one view those JPG files? --JorgeA

^^ Fantastic writeup of the issues involved. He carries the analogy very well. --JorgeA -
Woody posted this letter from one of his readers: The folks at Microsoft really have to realize (or admit) that not all Windows users have the same needs, and that thus they cannot all be treated the same way (i.e., with forced updates). You talk about "personalizing" one's PC, how about letting me personally decide whether and when to update my computer based on my personal circumstances?!? --JorgeA

"User control" is the critical concept here. A somewhat parallel process (no pun intended) has been going on in home video. It used to be you would rent a film on VHS and then fast-forward through the government piracy warning; now, you have to let it run as the FF function won't work while the warning is being shown. Also, if you stop a DVD or Blu-ray disc before finishing it and turn the player off, the chances are about 50-50 that you'll be able to start up where you left off when you turn the player back on. Of course, the chances of being able to resume a VHS tape where you left it were 100%. (Barring a jammed tape of course, but then optical discs have their own annoyances.) The bottom line is that the customer has less control. At least in the case of videos, the benefits of the newer technology are literally visible, whereas in the case of Windows 10 they are questionable, and at best arguable. --JorgeA

(No dig against Jorge, here, but) clearly your font was too small and too jammed-in between two Quotes. In case somebody had touched on that news item, I visually scanned recent thread pages before posting, and it did escape me. --JorgeA

Here's another angle on the subject of Windows 10 games: Epic co-founder calls out Microsoft's UWP platform, calls it a 'walled garden' [emphasis added] Them's fightin' words! --JorgeA

My first thought when I read your post was that Microsoft was trying to get people used to living with buggy software... --JorgeA
