I just came across this thread on another forum, discussing Windows 8, and it provides a link to this provocative new article: Windows 8 uptake falls even farther behind Vista The whole article (which isn't all that long) is worth reading. A couple of highlights: (emphasis added)--JorgeA

Thanks, I can't wait to see the article posted on their website. (At least, I couldn't find it.) I know that many publications hold off for a while before putting their paid print material online for free. However, looking around the site I did find this interesting analysis. I don't know enough about that issue to comment, but I have to wonder what relation it might have to the "Scroogled" campaign. The latter could be a reaction by Microsoft to Google's YouTube foot-dragging. For sure, "Scroogled" isn't giving the Google folks any warm, fuzzy feelings about helping out on the YouTube score. --JorgeA

Wow, that tells you something, doesn't it. Microsoft doesn't rate even a mention in a discussion of the smartphone market. --JorgeA

I take the lazy approach and enter the forum here, that always shows me all new posts that have occurred over a time frame I can choose, no matter where in the forum the posts are. That's pretty neat. B) I didn't even know you could do that! I come in mainly by getting automated notifications of new posts in the threads that I subscribe to, and secondarily by then looking around once I'm done with the new posts. Your way should not make a difference which subforum the thread is in. As long as people keep posting, it'll keep showing up. --JorgeA

... with no further explanation, here or in private. We're apparently supposed to be mind readers I guess. What I want to ask is: concessions to who, and why, but I guess I shouldn't bother lest its gets snipped or something. I'd suggest that we continue carrying on exactly the sort of discussion about Windows 8, and its consequences and implications, that we were having before the thread got moved. Then we'll learn what the limits are, if any -- if the thread gets shut down permanently, we'll know for sure that the problem wasn't simply going off-topic in a technical subforum; while if the thread gets to go on unmolested, then we'll know that everything's cool now. Quitting at this point would merely hand to any possible Softies the victory they'd like. Let them show their cards. Good to see you here. Let 'er rip!!! --JorgeA

you have to add the 0.1% of Win8 on touch devices (x86 tablets, AIO PCs with touch) and the 0.02% for RT. Whoops, you're right! I totally forgot about them. --JorgeA

For those considering making the switch to perpetual rent "cloud" computing, be careful what you write, lest it get deleted by your landlord cloud service provider. This particular case of course has to do with e-mail, which no one has as yet figured out how to send and receive without entering cyberspace. But it serves as a warning against putting ever more of our stuff in the cloud: If it's not in your possession, you don't control it! Delighted with the prospect of Google Docs or Office 364 scanning your documents for forbidden phrases? --JorgeA

Thanks for the update, Andre. Wow, I just went to that site and now it's saying 2.67%. Here's another counter that has Win8 share at 2.72%. (These two sites have Vista at 5.17% and 5.28%. ) --JorgeA

Personally, I think we should just declare victory (we did rescue the thread) and pick up where we left off. Consider this: if there was in fact a deliberate attempt to bring the discussion to a close this week, then right now those hypothetical nefarious parties could clearly claim success!! From a purely technical standpoint, AFAIK just because the thread got moved should not be affecting people's participation in it, at least those who were already aware of it. I subscribe to the thread and get notices of new posts, regardless of where the thread is located. Or, if your method is to navigate via browser to the Windows 8 subforum, you'll still see the redirecting link there (last time I checked), so you'll still find it. How do other people (that means you who are reading this ) come to visit the thread? --JorgeA

FWIW, the same warning appears if you open any thread in the General Discussion subforum. So it's not aimed specifically at this thread. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the warning is a way to steer people with technical Windows questions over to the right places, whereas here in this thread we can get as deep and technical as we wish -- but knowing that we're not seeking any "what should I do now?" kind of advice. --JorgeA

Because you asked... ...I added the suggested subtitle to the thread! (Though I left out the "rants" portion. We don't do none of that 'round these parts. ) I did leave the main title unchanged, mainly so that readers would know it was still the same thread. Hope it works! --JorgeA

PC, Windows 8 Manufacturing To Lag Through Q2 Could it be that the retailers and manufacturers have a better handle on users' wants and needs, as after all they sell to customers directly whereas Microsoft's connection to users is mostly indirect. And it sounds like what customers are telling them is that "touch" technology just isn't worth the added expense; while the Surface is a strange hybrid that's also overpriced in whichever category it tries to compete. --JorgeA

Love that quote!! And, thanks for the encouragement. --JorgeA

I got a chance to wander around the Neowin site for a bit this morning, and here's what turned up. More woes for the phone version of Windows: LG says it has no plans to return to Windows Phone (emphasis added)More reason to be wary of depending on the Cloud for your e-mail service: Microsoft Outlook.com and Hotmail down for some users [update] Of course, anybody who uses e-mail will necessarily depend on some server somewhere to deliver the goods. The difference, though, is that if you download your e-mail then it's available anytime you need it, whereas if you keep it stored in the server then you're outta luck if the server happens to be down when you need to access (for example) an old message. And a brave soul who decided to stick his hand in the hornet's nest: I don't care for Windows 8 Didn't read through the whole thread, but the first several replies were suprisingly mild or even sympathetic. --JorgeA

Thanks @SIW2 and @351837 for the good wishes. It's good to know that we're performing a valued service. --JorgeA

OK, now that we're rolling again -- here's something I came across while doing research on something else. It speaks to the efforts by Microsoft to pull its customers into the Cloud with its low-storage capacity Windows 8/RT tablets and the revamping of Office into an online service: Electronic Communications Privacy Act (emphasis added)This should give pause to anybody who relies on Outlook.com, Gmail, and similar online-only e-mail systems, and leaves their e-mails on the servers indefinitely. Why make it easier for snoops and busybodies to get the intimate details of your life so that you can be properly sorted, stamped, and approved? Here's another angle, with apologies to British readers: imagine if the King of England had had access to the communications that the American Revolutionaries sent to each other via the Committees of Correspondence. Had Microsoft (and yes, Google) been around back then, they would have made things a lot easier for the "swarms of Officers" that the King "sent hither"... --JorgeA

Thank you! --JorgeA

We had a big scare today over the future of this thread. The end result is that we are now in a different subforum. Let's hope that our new location offers as much public exposure to the analysis we're offering, as we have enjoyed all along. A big THANK YOU to all, in whatever their roles, who helped to save "Deeper Impressions"!!! --JorgeA

From a few months ago, a nice roundup of UI tweaks to make the Windows 8 experience more tolerable: How to make Windows 8 look like Windows 7 Maybe someone can update the writer with @Tihiy's and @bigmuscle's projects on MSFN to further improve Win8. (I didn't read through the comments.) --JorgeA

... See, you don't understand this Metro thing. What those cars are doing is just trying to get a more flat look by flattening everything. Stop living in the past man, everything is supposed to be flat now. I hate to do this because it's so tragic for the people involved, but -- ROFL!!! --JorgeA
-
Great find, definitely a Deeper Impression! While researching @TheBigBang's issue, I came across this thread from another forum which seems to dovetail with your discovery. Note the sarcastic Win8 fanb enthusiast, who confidently declares: and: Ohh, now they tell us. Hadn't we been led to believe that the Metro Start Screen was basically a new-look Start Menu? :angrym: --JorgeA

Ah, very good, thanks! Now that you mention it, I do remember that name coming up somewhere in this thread. --JorgeA

Interesting discussion I came across as I was researching something else: Is Microsoft On The Verge Of A Sudden Collapse Or Just A Long, Slow Decline? --JorgeA

I meant to ask you: what XP theme are you using there? Looks really sharp. --JorgeA
