Cant use dvd rw device as general storage device
InTheWayBoy replied to hambone's topic in Windows XP
Well the trick to burners is that they work as a CD without any extra software. To use the burning aspect of the drive, you need special software to perfom those functions. Since there are several ways/formats to burn CD's, you need a robust application to handle the dirty works. The built-in CDR support of WinXP is laughable at best...I only ever use it in dire situations. Nero is the best commercial application, but there is a large selection of freeware burning tools. And DVD's in particular are special, since there isn't a universal standard yet. -
Free VM To Test Unattended!

Only IM server I've ever heard of is Jabber...but why not just make everyone create an MSN account (Free) and just make them all buddies? I know it's not as limited as a LAN only solution, but it's by far the easiest.

something to capture the output of soundcard (digitally)

Double Post: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showforum=19 You bet me at suggesting Total Recorder by two minutes! -
something to capture the output of soundcard (digitally)
InTheWayBoy replied to prathapml's topic in Software Hangout
Total Recorder...best there is. I've used it for years! It'll catch anything that comes out of your speakers, but before it leaves. There is a driver associated with it that can get a little funky, but you can disable it if need be. -
I don't think you can...since that happens on the first boot-up, how would you apply any custom setting without going through the mini-setup? You could try going into safe mode first, but I still don't think that will do you any good. Most of the topics here are related to unattended installations, which by design is limited to a fresh install. Of course, I hope I'm wrong...good luck!

BartPE is far from illegal...I suggest you read this: http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/#legal The only issue left is the fact that people don't buy a seperate license to use only for BartPE. There is no 24 hour limit, because they found a legal way around it (PELoader) BARTPE IS NOT WINPE!!! THEY SHARE NO FILES!!! All the files from BartPE come from a standard WinXP source, and none are altered. Now, back to the project. Yes, you can boot BartPE from USB devices...but it's not quite what you are thinking. As I understand it, the only successful ways of doing this involve loading an ISO image from the USB device into the RAM, and the booting it from the RAM. This is good for speed, but bad because you need twice the RAM. That, and no changes are saved. Also, this process needs files from 2003 SP1, so it starts to get a little illegal... You can install BartPE to a regular HD, as use it as a regular OS. If you look in the menu of a fresh BartPE, you'll see an item like "HDDInstall" or something...they keep changing the name to much for me to keep up with. This will copy your current BartPE setup to a HD and set it up to run from it. I've never done this myself, but it should give you insight as to what's going on. This will allow you to make and save settings/documents. But it's still a little slow when compaired to a regular install of WinXP. And since you legally should have a seperate license for BartPE, it really doesn't save you any money. I don't know if these other people have seen some of the things you can do with BartPE. They have XPE, which basically gives you a fully-functioning shell based off explorer.exe, there are thousands of plugins to run everything from Office to Nero to Citrix to even certain games, and there is a large (And growing) base of hardware support that lets you use things like sounds cards, usb devices, printers, modems, etc. I would suggest you check out their official support forums for more info. It's the best place to find out more: 911cd.net/forums Good luck on your project!

Wow...I would seriously look into a different ISP. To me that is insane...now I might have my terms mixed up, but it sounds like you have a fractional T1...and if that's the case, then something is wrong. Cause I have two T1's for under $1000 a month...so $100,000 would be WAY too much! Of course, this is all just me looking from the outside in. You might have situations that dictate that price...but even something as simple as a business class DSL/Cable connection would be better than a 256K leased line. Oh, and one thing you might wanna look into is some kinda internal mail host that can sync with your external host. The idea is that your internal mail host would periodically download all the messages from your external host, and then distribute them to your clients from your internal server. This would save some bandwidth, as you would be downloading all the messages in one large chunk, instead of 20+ different sessions.

What about this page: http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=7000 As you can see there are many different error 7000's, so could you post the text of the message you are seeing?

Save yourself the headache and get an Intel Gigabit NIC...just got one off ebay for $30, and that's including shipping. They are generally the most universal in regards to application compatibility. For instance, VMWare ESX doesn't support my on-board Marvell Gigabit NIC, but it does support the Intel NIC I just bought.

Silent install for UXTHEME.DL_, SFC_OS.DL_ and TCPIP.SY_
InTheWayBoy replied to Niktareum's topic in Application Installs
Zxian - Nice application...have to keep this in my horde Niktareum - I see what you are trying to do, and wish you the best! After looking at the link Zxian provided, I found a link at the bottom that looks to be what you need. Essentially the application supports scripting to replace multiple files...as I have never used it I can't verify it works, but if it does that should be all you need...here's the link: http://www3.telus.net/_/replacer/txt Good Luck! And if you really wanted it to be slick, you could take the finished product and make a 7zip SFX for it, so in the end it will be just one file and silent...perfect! -
Okay, so I've already posted about this in the Software Hangout forum: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...0&gopid=407609& VMWare just released a new application called VMPlayer. It's a limited version of VMWare that only plays pre-constructed VM's. It'll work with VMWare, M$ VirtualPC, and Symantec Live Recovery (Not 100% sure about that last one). And here's the kicker...IT'S FREE! So here's my idea. Someone who has a legit VMWare Workstation (Me) makes a new VM. It should be configured to boot from an ISO file, and should be blank in regards to data on the virtual HD. Then, we host that VM (If it's blank it's not even 3KB of disk space) for all our people to download. Once they download and install VMPlayer, then they can use this blank MSFN VM...but for what? Well to test unattended installs of course! I've only had a few minutes to test it, but it looks like it's good to go. There is an issue of the path to the .iso being absolute, so we'll have to decide on a proper location for everyone. I guess the root of C: would be the best...also, we'll need to decide on the file name. Probably something like MSFN.ISO would be good. Then all you would have to do it take your finished ISO and rename it and put it in the right place. After that, the VMPlayer would boot the VM, which is pre-configured to boot the MSFN.ISO image...at which point you can test your unattended...FOR FREE! This could be a big help to those of us not fortunate enough to have a full VMWare. Any ideas? Suggestions? Etc? I've attatched a blank VM, that is configured to boot C:\msfn.iso if you all want to play with it. It may give you some notice about a UUID, I would just create a new one. I don't think it's an issue really...and if you haven't read the other post, you can get the VMPlayer here: http://www.vmware.com/products/player/ Let's see what we can do with this! MSFNBeta.rar
-
Okay, so initial tests look good...you have to setup the VM using VMWare, and if you tell it to use an ISO file it will save that. Then, you install the VMPlayer on another machine and load the previously mentioned VM into it. It will still look at the absolute path to the image file, but it works! So if you made the VM to point to C:\Temp\unattended.iso, then anyone who uses the VMPlayer must have their iso in that same folder (C:\Temp\) and it must be the same name (unattended.iso).
-
Okay, so I haven't been able to try this yet as it can't be installed on a machine running VMWare. The VMPlayer looks to be a tool that will let you load a VM and run it. You can't make them, but you can run them. It'll also load M$ VirtualPC and Symantec Live Recovery images as well...neat! And it's free! Here's the new tip: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/VMwar...er/1129825589/1 Here's the official page: http://www.vmware.com/products/player/ And here's the official FAQ: http://www.vmware.com/products/player/faqs.html So what you all think? I'm wondering if we could legally use this to help test out unattended installs. See, even though you can't make a VM, what if someone made a VM that was a blank HD and setup to boot from a CD ISO file. Then, all MSFN users could download this VM, and since it wouldn't actually contain any code it should be legit. After that, a user could load the VMPlayer with our blank VM to test out their install CD. Good idea? Eh?

I don't think that's WPI...at least, that's not WPI in the image he posted. WPI runs after installation, usually during the first login. In truth, you can run WPI at any time AFTER the install is done, but most script it to run at first boot via winnt.sif.
-
I would have to agree with chilifrei64. I'm almost positive I've read somewhere that you can't do dynamic disks with USB devices.

Try searching your error code as well...searching antispyware + error + 101 pulls a lot of results...this post as the fix most of us use: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...yware+error+101 Enjoy!

Copy / Delete question for Unattended install.
InTheWayBoy replied to Nightlord's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
You should look into implimenting the $OEM$ folder structure. If you put the files in the right place, then you can run WPI from the HD like you want. Just know when you configure WPI that you point it to where the files will be on the HD, not the CD. -
Then you would probably need to look into "Delegating Control"...I don't know if you can key in on just a single computer, but you probably can. I don't use that enough to help, but a google should give you enough to get started.

If you are worried about SID's and don't wanna fumble with SysPrep, you should check out this: NewSID Made by the wonderful sysinternals crew, NewSID is a free GUI tool to help reset the SID in cloned machines.
-
I think it does that so you don't get caught with your pants down...some installers delete things, while others revert to previous versions. So in order to make sure you don't get the wrong version, you'll need to reboot before running another MSI uninstall. A regular EXE uninstall should work fine though...

Supposed to equal the knowledge a basic computer tech should know after a year. It's mostly hardware config/diagnostic, software install, inane hardware info (What's the IRQ for COM4), and windows troubleshooting. But then again that's me talking about an old version. The new one means the same thing, but I hear it's much more in-depth.

Curious...why preinstall applications at all?
InTheWayBoy replied to -.-PhanTom-.-'s topic in Application Installs
And even though I only have a small (3 PC) network, I use these skills daily in my job as Network Admin. Most people in here seem to be in the technical field as well, so I'm sure many profit from these skills as well. As for frequency of reload, at one time I was reloading every week! That was a few years back, now it's more like once a quarter. The funny thing is that by the time I do a reload, I've gone through so many revisions that it's never the same install! So in essence that special UA only got used once, before I wasted more time making a newer and better one...that will eventually be replaced. So if you are speaking in strickly time measurement, then I loose time on these at home. But at work, where I don't change the UA unless it's proven effective, each revision saves me countless hours since I can just reload instead of troubleshooting. I saw on a site a quote that went something like this: "Minor Problems, Reboot...Major Problems, Reload." Only problem with that is you don't stay so sharp with your diagnostic skills. But hell, I got other things to worry about right? So for those who are in the computer industry, in almost any field, benefit from it...for the rest it's something else. And as yoyo92 pointed out, it's just fun...all the scripting and compressing and research...I dig it! -
