gpedit "transplanted", but the re-direct is still enabled even with the GP fix. This is very strange.
-
Yes, the computer was restarted but no luck. Is it possible to use GPE with XP Home?
-
Thanks, but that didn't work on my home sp3 install.

There is a folder that I use so often that I've created a shortcut to it in my start menu. However, this folder is deleted from time to time (out of necessity), and when it's gone, if I click the shortcut link, I get redirected to another folder, and this redirect becomes permanent (unless I go in and alter the shortcut properties). What I can't figure out is that I have the same setup on another xp system (pro) and this auto-redirect behavior doesn't occur when the deleted folder cannot be found. I realize this situation could seem ridiculous and be dissected in a number of ways, but I'd prefer if it was not. This is what I'm dealing with and I'm simply looking to find out if I can avoid this redirecting behavior in my xp home install (like my Xp pro install does). Thanks

That didn't work either.

A slight miscommunication. When I wrote "So I've downloaded and installed the program." I was referring to MPC-HC, not FFDShow. I thought FFDShow came bundled with MPC-HC based on post #4, but I guess not? Anyway, I've now downloaded and successfully installed FFDShow, but it's not appearing in my Start Menu->Programs. Is there any other way to launch it? Must it be launched separately every time in order to work in conjunction with MPC?

So I've downloaded and installed the program. How do I activate ffdshow and get to this screen?
-
So it does have a built-in EQ? How does one use it?

So, if I want to use Media Player Classic then I have to find codecs so I can play DVDs, CDs, MP3s. FLAC, WAV, etc. MPlayer and MPUI is something different that (packaged) is all ready to go. Well, I'd like to see why you both have chosen to use MP Classic, so I guess I'll start looking into the codecs I'll need (unless someone can point me in the right direction). Edit: So far MP HC is playing most everything in my arsenal: CD, DVD, MP3, MP4, & FLAC - but no EQ! Hopefully there's a workaround. Thanks
-
There are a couple of things about the player that really annoy me. The main two being the volume control that goes up to 200% (and distorts) and the fact that the EQ settings are never retained. Anyone found a good free alternative for playing music and DVDs?
-
No, I believe it's verizon (not my account, I'm helping a friend).
-
Anyone? Thanks

In general, many emails sent to this address are received on the laptop, but not all. Outlook Express is also installed on a desktop (using the same account) and the problem doesn't seem to be occurring there at all. I came across THIS thread, and thought I found a solution in it, but both computers are already set to leave a copy of messages on server. TIA

I'm not entirely convinced that you know exactly what my commuting needs are, or what state I live in. Hopefully though, you're right, because all the other extras on 7ult. are unappealing.

So if I'm looking at cars, and there's a BMW with some spiffy traction control that I've never heard about and never used, does that mean I shouldn't check out that option? I'm B.Y.B. I appreciate the help Magic.

Isn't that kind of like saying "If you've never heard of chocolate, then get vanilla"?

For someone like me, a home user who doesn't particularly know what to do with VHD, what might I use it for?
-
It's pretty much between 7 Pro 64 and 7 Ultimate 64 at this point. I'm just trying to figure out if you all use the VHD feature. Thanks, Magic, for the link, but I still don't quite understand what Microsoft was aiming to accomplish with that feature. For home consumers who don't want to wipe their drives clean? Is it more for servers? Why do you all use it (if you do)?
-
Do you all use the VHD feature? I could see myself potentially using that alot. It's like a sandbox, isn't it?
-
Thanks, I can't (for me) see any reasons to go for 7 Ult. - so it's going to be either XP Pro 64 or 7 Pro 64.
-
Thanks for the explanation. So I'll definitely be buying a new OS then. Now, which to choose...
-
Interesting. Poking around online I found that XP won't support more than 3.xx gb of RAM. That's pretty much a deal killer right there (I think). Also, why go 7 ultimate (vs 7 Pro) when the only differences are language support and bitlocker (which I won't use)? Am I missing something?
-
I'm gearing up for a new system and I'm not sure whether to buy 7 or stick with XP. I'm not a gamer (though I may occasionally install an old game or venture out for a new one), nor am I obsessed with syncing smart devices and the like (I hear 7 is good for that). The system will be used primarily for basic tasks such as internet, word proc., playing music, movies, etc. I quite enjoy my XP installs (currently using XP Pro) - they feel very streamlined and fairly no-nonsense for a Windows install. I'm committed to sticking with Windows for now. Would I be missing out on performance or the maximizing of some great new hardware if I stick with XP? Flashy looks, etc. I don't really care about (although I've seen some really nice custom desktops running 7). TIA

I'm not sure if I need a dedicated sound card.

CoffeeFiend, Thanks for the generous post. I've never built my own PC before, but with your suggestions I'm definitely tempted to. I've already begun reading "A beginner's guide to overclocking" and checking out some of the posts over on OCN. Thanks again.
