Bought this drive new and did a fresh Win7 Pro 64 install last year. I just checked alignment using this guide: http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/checking_ssd_alignment to find "Starting offset: 32,256 Bytes" on the drive's only partition (ever). Not divisible by 4096 = not aligned. A check with AS SSD shows: msahci - OK 31 K - BAD 59.62 GB Does someone know why this could be and how to fix it without data loss?
-
Good to know, I'll check out that program. But if Classic Shell is not being used, the reg tweaks above do the job.
-
all good, the wording in my second post was definitely confusing. Gotchya, my bad.
-
Hey Pink. Actually the reg tweak is needed. Read my 1st post thoroughly and you'll see what's up. Have a good one ??? no regtweak needed. Rt click Start Orb>> Properties>> Start Menu tab select "customize">> select "display as menu">> OK>>OK Done.
-
anyone? I can;t be the only one wanting a direct, menu style button that opens into "my documents" edit: I found the reg tweaks here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/92587-start-menu-user-folder-buttons-open-users-instead-libraries.html
-
I would like the "DOCUMENTS" folder (which I believe was originally "My Documents") to be in the place of the "Documents" folder. I would like to retain the menu functionality (or the small arrow to the right of both documents folders). Please help, thank you.

If I have, say, 7 songs in a playlist set to random - if the player plays track 3, then track 7, it will stop at the end of track seven although it has only played 2/7 songs on the playlist. Does anyone know how to fix this behavior?

I edited boot.ini and rebooted, and now the noguiboot check-box even functions properly in msconfig again! (a mystery to me) With the logon/guest account issue, I forgot I had checked "autologin" in tweakUI. I had to uncheck that option and go into the registry in order to prevent the admin acct from being hidden in the welcome/login screen. Now everything appears to be working properly. Thanks all
-
Thanks, so boot.ini does exist and it was set to read-only - so I unchecked "read-only" and rebooted. However, I still can't get the "apply" button to appear when I uncheck "noguiboot" in msconfig. Also, although the Guest account is on and the admin acct is pass protected, I'm still not getting a log in screen or password prompt. It just boots straight into the admin acct.
-
Pics attached I searched for boot.ini (including hidden) and only found "boot.ini.backup" in windows/pss

XP SP3 here. I just tried un-checking "noguiboot" in msconfig, and when I do so the "apply" button doesn't become selectable. If I then re-check the box, apply does become selectable, and if I uncheck the box again and hit apply, the new setting (un-checked box) is NOT applied. Also, I tried to set up a guest account and password for the Admin account, hit apply and ok, then rebooted, and none of these settings took effect (the guest account was still off, no pasword required for admin account). I'm stumped. This is not a nlite install and I have turned some services off, carefully, using proper guides. Thanks

All I found here is a Win7wallpaper: %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Themes Found some here, but not the ones I created: C:\Windows\Resources\Themes

At the time of my first post I believe I'd been using seven for 6 days. The computer does have new hardware and I'm getting used to things now (w/SSD boot drive btw). I don't quite understand your comment about the start menu. What is enabling you to use it less? These responses are very encouraging to keep going on 7.

I got a really good deal on a legit copy of Win7 Pro 64 and so far I'm not all that impressed. There are a few nice conveniences: - I was able to put a folder in the quick-launch toolbar which is convenient for my uses and I didn't have in XP (it may be possible to do this in XP though) - The search feature in the Start Menu seems fairly convenient - I could see breadcrumbs in W.E. being really convenient after I get a little more used to it - It seemed easy to make Win7 play nice with my SSD Pretty minimal stuff though... I miss the up-front nature of XP. To me at least, it seemed a lot easier to access all types of settings. I'm sure familiarity is a huge factor here, but 7 seems to really be trying to hide a lot of the controls that many people don't ever use. I don't care about nifty new themes and visual effects in 7. Previews on the task bar, etc. Whatever. I haven't figured out how to allow each folder to retain its unique view settings yet. Overall, it seems like a fairly sleek skin for the XP I know and love, a skin I think I could largely do without. Thinking about going back to XP (in 64 bit). Anyone want to convince me otherwise? Is there more going on behind the scenes than I may realize?

Up and running. FFD EQ starts up automatically with MPC and retains EQ settings from previous sessions. Big thanks to allen2 and the other contributors for helping out.
-
Awesome, that resource had the (seemingly elusive) exe file. I probably installed a bunch of FFD options I don't need (I checked all of them), but oh well. Tomorrow I'll hopefully get MPC set up to use FFD as a filter. After I customize the eq in FFD, will it be enabled automatically every time I use MPC?
-
Because the interface is clearly meant for playing videos and I think it would really suck quite badly for playing music. I'd much rather keep using WMP for music, where things are neatly organized by albums/groups/whatever and rated, where I can sync my mp3 player, where the same songs can be streamed to other computers and devices or even used in media center and so on. Gotcha, nice.
-
I've never tried. But I wouldn't want to use it for that either. I'm curious why. [for those who care, the bare MPC-HC install will play flac and mp3] Thanks, looks like a great resource but it's also quite extensive and I couldn't find instructions on how to install ffdshow initially.
-
I'm confused. I requested recommendations for a music/movie player and MPC was highly recommended. Also, post 9 shows an EQ for the player. So MPC won't play FLAC, MP3, etc? What about the eq mentioned as being part of the FFDshow package? After downloading FFDshow, I was referring to the "Install" document that states: "Binary distribution: Run ffdshow.exe and follow instructions." I guess I don't have the binary distr then. The second set of install instructions (shown below) are totally confusing to me. I'll try to search elsewhere for easier instructions I guess. "From sources: 1. Install cygwin with gcc, binutils, make and mingw runtime (maybe others) Cygwin can be downloaded from http://www.cygwin.com 2. Install nasm 3. Go to ffmpeg directory 4. Edit config.mak and config.h 5. Go to libavcodec directory 6. Type make 7. Copy libavcodec.dll to windows system directory (or somewhere to PATH) 8. Go to mplayer directory 9. Edit config.mak and maybe config.h 10. Type make 11. Copy libpostproc.dll to windows system directory (or somewhere to PATH) 12. Go to dshow directory 13. Open dshow.sln (for VS.NET) or dshow.dsw (for VS 6) and build it (xvid.ax should be registered after build) 14. Try to play some XVID AVI with Windows Media Player 6.4 (may work also with other players)"

FFDshow downloaded but I can't find the exe

Late night last night, the question could have been clearer. The OS SSD I let Win7 do its thing on and installed a few crucial programs (firefox, word proc, etc). It is currently at ~33gb/64. The storage drive was the one I was formatting and I wound up formatting it as "basic" ntfs. Right now the storage drive only has one partition, I'll probably just use folders to organize it.
-
I never got MPC-HC to work, but I'm trying again. The program is installed but I can't figure out where to enable the EQ.
-
I am using a 64gb SSD for the OS and minimal programs. I also have a much larger storage drive where I will be keeping, music, media, etc. to access from Win7. What type of format should I do (basic, primary, I don't know)? TIA

A common sentiment seems to be that over-saturation is a problem with wide-gamut displays (with non color-aware programs). I'm confused as to what specification qualifies a monitor to be wide-gamut. The HP zr24w is not considered wide-gamut and has the following specs: Color Gamut Area vs. NTSC 83% (CIE 1976), 72% (CIE 1931) Color Gamut Coverage of sRGB 97% (CIE 1931) Another monitor (I've forgotten the model) is said to have a wide-gamut and displays 91 percent of the NTSC color spectrum. Am I to assume that the 91% wide gamut monitor will have over-saturation issues? I am not a photo/graphics editor and I'd like to know what spec I should look for to avoid that issue. Thanks
