[Question] - How to clean the pagin file once ?
spacesurfer replied to albator's topic in Windows XP
Here's the deal about deleting the pagefile from the UBCD: You can delete it, but the file is still stored in the recycler folder. I deleted it and ran Ghost and there was no difference in my Ghost image. That puzzled me, so then I ran UBCD again and noticed the recycler was 750 mb (the same size as my pagefile). I emptied the recycler from the explorer. The recycler folder was emptied out. You can delete the files from the recycle folder itself. You have to empty the recycle bin from explorer (the one on the taskbar). Hope that helps anyone trying to delete their pagefile for a smaller image. -
I avoid letting Ghost backup directly to a DVD. Reason is, I have several images: one with the base installation, one after all drivers installed and all the tweaks, one after all the programs installed, and several just backup after major modifications. I can burn several of those on the same DVD. You can emulate a ghost floppy disk. Then you can pick which one you want to restore from that one DVD. I've noticed that you have load CD-ROM drivers to restore from DVD if you choose my method. Otherwise Ghost will know that the DVD image was not burned from within the program and won't let you restore. (Does that make sense?)

Because sometimes you want a program running but not occupy the taskbar. Any program can be minimized to the taskbar! But what if you have 20 windows open? It would be nice to minimize certain programs you want to keep running (instead of closing it out) and get it out of the way--the perfect place for it is the system tray. It's a nuisance that I have to close and reopen Outlook Express to check email. It's a time saver to place it in the system tray. If minimizing to system tray was not a convenience, why would they have a registry tweak for MS Outlook 2003? BTW, I was wondering if there was a registry tweak (not a program), but it seems a registry tweak does not exist. I found plenty of programs however. I hope that answers your question Andromeda. (Oh yeah, let me mention that if Outlook Express is kept open, it periodically checks for new messages. That's why it's faster to keep it open.)

[Question] - How to clean the pagin file once ?
spacesurfer replied to albator's topic in Windows XP
I got internet working. Left both computers off overnight. In AM rebooted and they work. I also created a CD with Ghost 8 on UBCD. Ghost 8.2 gives errors (internal error of some sort). Then I tried Ghost 8 files and it works fine. I also created an image after deleting the pagefile and it turned out okay. I actually created a CD with both Ghost 8 and 8.2. Maybe for someone else, 8 may not work and 8.2 may work. That way, there's the option of running either one. Learned quite a few things in the process about UBCD. The only benefit of UBCD so far (for me) is my ghost images can be smaller after deleting the pagefile and temporary files. Other than that, it's just faster to put floppy in and start ghost. My ghost executable is actually on a 15 mb Fat partition and once the floppy boots, running the 0.98 mb ghost is a snap from HDD. (running ghost from floppy takes like 2 minutes). Thanks for your help guys. Zxian, albator, and the rest. -
No problem. Thanks.

In order of must have to not so necessary 1. Microsoft Money 2006 2. Microsoft Office 2003 (or 2000 or newer version) 3. Norton Ghost 8.0 (DOS version; don't care about windows version) 4. Adobe Acrobat 7 5. Norton Internet Security Antispyware version 2005 6. TrueLaunchBar 7. Roxio Easy Media Creator 6 8. Sony Sound Forge 8 9. WinTools Extra Drive Creator 10. AllToTray This excludes the OS itself and all the apps that come included such as: Windows Media Player Fax Outlook Express etc.

I know, I did search google and found many apps. But was wondering if anyone knew of a way without third-party apps. That's the only reason I created it. Anyways, I ended up downloading an app that does the job for any windows. It's called AllToTray. You simply check "Minimize to Tray" in the right click menu of the app on taskbar and it will minimize to tray instead of the taskbar. Good thing about it is you select which ones to minimize to tray. What Microsoft needs to do is add a minimize to tray button on the title bar along with minimize, restore, and close!! That would be the ultimate.

Outlook Express is not a part of Microsoft Office, it's part of XP.
-
run scandisk or chkdsk on the hard drive with the option to automatically fix and to scan for bad sectors and recover data... if any are found, the OS should mark these as bad and not write data to these sectors.

Is there a way of minimizing Outlook Express to the system tray like you can with Outlook 2003? I've seen the tweaks for Outlook 2003, but it would be nice to do same for Outlook Express (without using third-party programs of course). Thanks. Title Edited - Please follow new posting rules from now on. --Zxian

[Question] - How to clean the pagin file once ?
spacesurfer replied to albator's topic in Windows XP
Guys, I need help big time. I screwed up. Here's what I did: I got the HDD drivers loaded in UBCD environment and was able to see my HDD after all. Then I found the pagefile and deleted the file. (It was something like 750 mb). Then I ran ghost32.exe which runs in NT environment. I got an error message saying there was internal error blah blah blah. So I never ran Ghost. I didn't change anything else. Did not touch anything on my HDD except deleting the pagefile. Here's what happened: I restarted back in Windows XP and my internet does not work. I have two computers connected to a Linksys router (with Vonage). I can see the other computer, I can access files and printer that is shared. Everything works fine except that the Internet does not work. I can't browse anymore. I tried ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew on both computer. Funny thing is: INTERNET ON **BOTH** WENT DOWN. I tried turning off everything, router, cable modem. Rebooting and same problem. I can see netword resourses but no internet browsing. I booted to UBCD and connected to internet to post this message. If anyone know what going on, please let me know. (I don't think pagefily had anything to do with it because I ran ghost from DOS and returned my system back to a previuos state and same problem.) Thanks. -

I wonder if he has system restore enabled. That usually takes up a lot of space on your hard drive. I immediately disable system restore. No need for it when you use imaging software. -

Just to rule out any other reasons/causes of your image being bloated, can you verify with an image explorer that your pagefile is non-zero in size? Ghost has Ghost Explorer that lets you view your files. I'm unfamiliar with Acronis. Does it have a similar program that let's you view and extract files if needed from the images it contains? -

@net_user Ok, I'll try that tonight when I get home. One other problem I ran into, however. While trying that last night, although my HDD was not recognized, I thought since ghost executable recognizes all HDD types, it should recognize the drive. However, the DOS ghost executable would not run. The error I got was "cannot run in NT/2003/??/??" environment. I know there is a ghost32.exe that runs in winxp, i wonder if that will work. -

I tried that, however, HDD still not recognized. I know the drivers work because I can install Win XP using these drivers. I think I may be doing something wrong. Do you have to include the txtsetup.oem file? If so, what should be the directory structure. The driver files on my CD have this structure: txtsetup.oem winxp\driverfile.inf winxp\driverfile.sys .... Should the txtsetup.oem file be moved to winxp folder so all files are in the same folder? -
[Question] - How to clean the pagin file once ?
spacesurfer replied to albator's topic in Windows XP
You're correct. Ghost Explorer will not let you delete files from an NTFS image. For some reason NTFS images are read-only according to the documentation. If the partition type is FAT, however, deletion is allowed. Sure wish I can delete the pagefile.... it's 700 mb of the image size. BartPE does not recognize my HDD, even though I added the RAID/SATA drivers. Haven't figured out how to do this yet. -
I think I may have found a solution. Try this. Word resizes your image so it fits within the boundaries you have defined. If the original size of your image is longer than the boundary, then Word will decrease it to fit and thereby reducing the quality of your image. Find out the size of your image (in inches), then import the image into word, double click, go to the size tab, then specify the original size of your image. This will hopefully display the correct image size and resolution.

Need more info: how do you have the data set up? Are the city, state, and zip in one field or are they separate fields? what about street? Are you sure the original data does not have carriage returns? where is the original data, in an excel file? To overcome this issue (without know the answers to you questions), you should format the fields the way you want before you merge.

Yup, I'm looking for a solution to this as well.

You don't need to write google in the underline. All you have to do is record a macro that replaces <company> with google (or any other company), select Replace all. then end the record. That should replace all occurrences of <company> with google.

All you need to insert is http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-1823331-10296033?cm_ven=CJ&cm_cat=1653155&cm_pla=1823331&cm_ite=Kodak+EasyShare+Gallery ** Do not insert the entire html code, just teh web address. That should solve your problem. ** If you're trying to attach a link to an image, insert the image using from the Insert menu, then attach the hyperlink to it (not the entire html code--just the url).

Office 2003 reinstall=all SP2 error 1935
spacesurfer replied to chiners_68's topic in Microsoft Office
Chiners, I've applied SP2 to an Admin Install with SP1 and some hotfixes and I've been able to install it fine without errors. I think what you can do is run the "Save my settings wizard", remove office completely, install your SP2 version and import back your settings. Fresh installs are better and cleaner than installs over previous installs, in my opinion. -
I guess I'll be the only proponent of Norton Partition Magic. I haven't had a single problem. I've repartitioned my hard drive several times (both from within windows and from DOS). From within Windows, I've partitioned my data partitions. From DOS, I've increased the size of my OS partition to install programs. From both, I have not had any trouble, no errors, no data corruption. I've never tried Acronis and as long as Partition Magic works, I probably won't give it a try. 1) Whatever you choose, it's best to backup! It's not worth the risk. 2) Run chkdsk for errors before and after repartitioning on all partitions.

[Question] - How to clean the pagin file once ?
spacesurfer replied to albator's topic in Windows XP
OK, I'll give it a try. Where is the default location and what is the default name of the pagefile? I'll search using Ghost Explorer and delete that file. If I'm not mistaken its simply called pagefile in the root of the OS drive. (I'm not sure if Ghost Explorer lets you delete files. I know you can extract files. But I can experiment on this one). -
Hitachi vs. Western Digital vs. Seagate
spacesurfer replied to Jeremy's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
Based on experience, I'd go with Maxtor instead. Never had a problem with it before. I know of someone who's had problems with Western Digital, but I'm sure we can find others who have has problems with every other brand. It all depends on which one you have luck with.
