  1. alos, i've tried grldr. and i'd like to ask one more question on this issue: how to edit grldr, and save the edited application without changing its format? since the grldr i've adopted is with default chn locale which is unchangeable, and i wanted to make this bi-lingual one. thanks
  2. yes, and thanks for your replies. i've tried dumping an xp image ghosted from a hd with different mrb and disk geo to my first primary partition after backing up mbr and paritition table. then the pc frozes at booting and all my logical/ partitions became inaccessible. obvious it's because the image records a different disk geo and a different mbr, and moreover, partition table is stroed in mbr and each partition has a LBR. yet, for HDs with the same geometry, esp the geomerty of the first primary partition and the same mbr, dumping is successful. so, backup the mrb and partition table, then ghost, then restore mbr and partition table to the original
  3. no, not at all the default homepage is set to be "Blank" hehe. this whole process manifests itself as: open ie -- then it goes to :http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=54834 -- then redirect to: http://runonce.msn.com/runonce2.aspx the latter reqires to me check some ie setting options and requires me to check "join ms experience..." every time after the ie temperory contents are cleared ie goes to this page annoying thanks
  4. problem description: every time ie 7 is opened, ie 7 directly goes to "http://runonce.msn.com/runonce2.aspx" if no human interventionand loads the ie 7 cumstomiztion page, it's very annoying -- how to disable it? thanks
  5. thanks, LLXX i've got it done. ms dos 7.1 is able to configure a dual boot while keeping the existing hd geo and ox intact, so that there's no need to treat 3~5. thanks for all your replies.
  6. @jaclaz: i've read the contents directed by the links, yet don't know how to do this. @LLxX: well, now i'd like to try to install dos 7.1 right on the partition where xp is installed, would this porcedure be feasible: 1. backup partition table and mbr 2. install dos 7.1 without formatting pri partition 1 3. ???? what would be the next? thanks
  7. thanks. from the experience i've got these days: 1. separating/remove drivers is easy. 2. the most dangerous and difficult thing is hard disk geometry: since each fresh xp installation will record Hd geo and wrtie its own ito the MBR, so this "universality" would probalby render the totoal loss of partition table on another's pc, and consequently cause data loss. though there's disk management tools to backup partition table, there's still the problem of fixing/writing MBR. wiring MBR with only a disk management tool may not make the ghosted xp bootable, since the MBR is the same as was recored by the source xp. so if someone has no xp installation cd, this ghosted xp is "dead" since no rescue mode is available to fix mbr or fix boot. 3. as for cdkey and activation of xp: there's the key assigned to each MS engineer, which allows as many installation of xp as possible. the methods posted on ms official site could change the cd-key into this "universal" key ---- hence ,the key is "reserve disk geo and renew mbr" any more insights? thanks
  8. thanks for your replies, yet LLXX's suggestion is perhaps the mot difficult for me to understand and carry out, since i'm not good at dos manipulations, could the suggestion be explicted: how to sys ? thanks again!
  9. 1. on the title: by "ghostability", i mean "the possibility to be dumped by ghost". 2. why this bothers: it's boring to install xp pro to every pc and during the installation process, xp will inspect pc hardware configurations and select corresponding drivers shipped in the installation cd. hence, each xp installation on each different pc configuration results in a uniqure operable xp pro. consequrently, each successful installation of xp pro contains pc-specific drivers and hard disk geometry. is there a way to make an xp installation independent of pc config, that is, seperate from a successful installtion of xp those specific drivers (i.e, remove simultatneously installed drivers as many as possible), then ghost this xp, and this xp could be ghosted to any other pc. and the only thing after such a dump is to to installed specific drivers. 3. any workarounds? thanks! 10. by the abbreviated topic title, i mean: 1. say, i've a primary partition, where xp is installed 2. integrate a pure dos environment into this partition, while the disk partition scheme remains intact to be explicit: 1st primary partition: xp 2nd primary partion: fedora others: logical paritions i'd like to integrate dos in to 1st primary partition, without 1. installing a real dos to any other partitions, say, dos 6,7 or win9x ------ why this bothers: 1. for those in need to run dos progs without a cd-rom/floppy driver, especially 3rd party disk management tools, backup tools,... -- thanks
  11. thanks! i'm still collecting info and i'll try all your suggestions this summer vacation
  12. thanks! (especially to Jaclaz, for his kindness and mastership ) i've downloaded windows vista beta1, and wanted to try it out! i'm reading the contents your links guide me to! and i'll post more/later if needed!
  13. thanks! i just wanted to try vista out most of the time i'm using xp sp2+ fedora core 4. i personally don't think this is an easy problem.
  14. due to lack of disk space needed for an installation of windows vista, i venture to raise the following question: ---- is it possible to isntall Vista/longhor to a USB hard disk? and, how to boot such an os from the USB hard disk if the former is feasible? ------- any suggetsions will be appreciated! 15. thanks! i've reinstalled it and changed the registry key values! now it works well!
  16. this morning i patched xp pro with sp2 and updated ie 6 to ie7beta preview, but ie 7 beta preview CAN NOT open any webpages. system spec: xp pro sp2+ie7beta preview No third party firewall, just kaspersky antivirus attempts to open any web site will be directed instantly to access the web site: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=54834&clcid=0x409 and then the browser freezes and stops! while other browsers work fine! any one could help me out? thanks in advance!
  17. sp2+ie 7 beta preview works me out! i got up at 6am this morning and tried patching xp with xp2 and then installed ie7beta preview. this combination allowed to set colors as desired!
  18. does anyone notice that after the installation of sp2, the text or background color of the ie browser can't be changed or set to the color desired by the user. the only available scheme is the default windows color! is there a solution to this, cause i'm wearing heavy lens and afraid of dazzling white background color! To change the default settings of the text/background color, please follow: internet options:general:colors:text+background but this is all but futile! help! 19. thanks Elec. i've done it perfectly following your instructions via system-user profiles-copy to.. yet, one more question: what the directory "c:\documents and settings\default user" is for? thanks again!
  20. sorry for the mistake in the title of the topic, it should be: how to transform a user profile completely/identically into one for another user account os specification: win xp pro +s p1a problem description: after installation of xp sp1a, i forgot to install all applications with the account name "administrator" but with the account name "chee" required to be created during installation. i don't want to leave a chance for a second user log-on or to maintain two such full-previlige accounts on my pc. the user account "administrator" just has a default but comparatively "blank" user profile! so: i want to transform all profiles of the user account "chee" to "administrator" My attempts: i've tried to copy all contents from the directory c:/documents and setting/chee to c:/documents and setting/default user but failed to do this perfectly, some of the profiles available to "chee" ARE UNAVAILABLE to "administrator" then i ghosted the os back! ------- could anyone suggest some other way to make a nice transformation? thanks in advance! 21. 1. make sure the (ghost) image file is well prepared and has no bad blocks (use "check image file") to check this out 2. make sure NOT to use an previous version of ghost to dump the image file made by a newer version of ghost 3. sometimes during compression or decompression, ghost will, with a very low chance, make mistakes 4. your problem has nothing to do with vista, since dumping will format and overwrite the whole source partition from which the image file is extracted and compressed. good luck
  22. well, i just didn't get what you meant!
  23. some days ago i got a mail asking how to change/edit WPA keys in the registry. i think it's necessary to share this how-to here if some still don't know how to edit protected keys/values/data in the registry! any suggestions and corrections are welcomed! some keys/values/data in the registry are protected while xp are running, indeed they're no more than keys/values/data in these 3 files: system usres system in the directory %systemroot%\windows\system32\config so it's not possible to edit contents marked protected in these files while xp running. but to accomplish this kind of task, all you need are utilities in which files could be copied without running xp itself, win 98 bootable cd, dos.., will be ok. here's how: 0. back up your registry if needed 1. non-xp environment: boot your pc through other media--cd or other os--win 98,dos,..,any evironment that the task of copying/moving files from dos partitions could be carried out and which doesn't require xp to run is ok. copy files: system software from %systemroot%\windows\system32\config (always in the "c:\" partition, for multi-win os users, it's appropriate to remember the partition label where the files to be edited reside and to write the extract path instead of using %systemroot%\) to any partition accessible to window xp without renaming them ( , for easy manipulation, not necessary to rename them),since we're going to edit there files via registry. now exit from the environment and boot into windows xp 2. xp environment: in windows xp there's also a shell with command prompt, which could be activated by executing "cmd.exe". now at the command prompt, mount the files: system software you've just copied to the registry by: reg load directoryofthecopiedfiles\system HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\sys and by: reg load directoryofthecopiedfiles\software HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\soft these two commands will mount files: system software as: sys soft right under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ you can mount them wherever and with whatevername desired in the registry. now exit from the command prompt and run registry editor to open your registry. under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\sys HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\soft find the whatever you want to edit. after edition, exit registry editor, this will save changes you've just made into the copied files without renaming them at all. now run 'cmd.exe" and at the command prompt unmount the files you've just mounted into the registry by the commands: reg unload HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\soft and reg unload HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\sys 5. non-xp environment: shut down xp and boot into the previous evironment and overwrite the orignal files by the files you've copied and edited through registry editing: copy directoryofthecopiedfiles\software %systemroot%\windows\system32\config copy directoryofthecopiedfiles\system %systemroot%\windows\system32\config chose overwrite while executing these 2 commands exit and restart and boot into window xp done good luck
  24. since sp2 will automatically upgrade the existing ie 6 and partially disable the option of changinge text background color in ie 6 when browsing online, is there a way to NOT upgrade ie 6 when installing/upgrading to xp sp2? i found this somewhat annoying since after upgrading ie 6+sp2 can't show all web pages with the user-set background color which dazzles my eyes by its default white background color, while ie 6 definitely can. any ideas? thanks in advance
