    Windows Updates

I guess I need a new contributor for the XP list... No hard feelings if you're reading this, Mup, but we've gotta keep moving forward... any takers? Tom and I will help any new taker until they get on their feet. The faster someone steps forward, the easier this will be.
  3. I deny permission to the system at install time. I expanded DEFLTWK.IN_ I commented out: "%SystemRoot%\Prefetch",1,"D:AR" I added: "%SystemRoot%\Prefetch",2,"D:PAR(D;;FAGAGRGWGXWD;;;SY)" I makecab'ed the file and renamed the original to .OLD Now when I install, the directory doesn't get created Ha!

anyone seen muppethunter? in the meantime, go to the 2003 list, load the KB articles, and select the XP patches from there...
  6. Search is in explorer; the trouble is that it is registry dependant. That is to say, explorer calls reg entries for it. If it doesn't see them, search won't work right. I do not offhand know which XP happens to need.
  7. Yes, I forgot to put REBOOT.EXE into the fixed fileset. It's a looooong f'ing story that I won't even get into You can skip it, though at some point I will put it back. I set up a custom menu item that calls it. If you want it, and it is handy, here it is http://www.vorck.com/windows/data/reboot.zip Put in system32
  8. Hi Yee, thanks for the fixes. I will implement them later today or tomorrow.
  9. I believe, IIRC, that the sequence is found at the only instance of the following byte sequence in the file: 90 90 90 90 90 8B FF 55 8B EC 8B 45 2C 33 C9 3B C1 So, search for that in any version of the file, and you should only find one such sequence, and that's the one to change.
  10. Thanks man. Where is your listing? Are obsoletes removed from it? Edit: Apparently my list does include the bottom fixes; the problem is multiple hotfix KB numbers assigned to the same issues. Example: KB973354 links to Security Bulletin MS09-037, which is itself KB973908... So I have to add more numbers Thanks for the list, it will help me sort this multi-KB issue out
  11. Hello all, I have updated the 2003 x86 32bit hotfix list at http://www.vorck.com/windows/hotfixes_2003.html I am wondering if I have left any out... thanks for having a look

    Directing sfc

; ------------- SFC Settings ------------- ; You can set the dllcache path here. To disable WFP completely, set the path to something invalid like "Z:" HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon","SFCDllCacheDir",,"%SystemRoot%\System32\Dllcache" HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Windows File Protection","SFCDllCacheDir",,"%SystemRoot%\System32\Dllcache"

    Fileset 9, all done

Give this set a try http://vorck.com/windows/data/fdvfiles-xp.zip It actually leaves some junk in, as you can see if you run the following: expand -r syssetup.in_ expand -r sysoc.in_ I actually wanted a version of XP with a working Firewall (for reasons I won't even start to explain). This set also leaves in Internet Explorer because I needed to run Adobe Acrobat 9 and didn't want to figure out which file Adobe thought they needed. If you want to remove IE, just comment it out in the syssetup.inf file (and then recompress it of course).

Shoot, I just can't get this right!! Sorry! Anyway, reboot is not an essential file. Hit ESC during setup if it's a problem to skip it.

    Fileset 9, all done

"(Will have to find a text editor that numbers lines!)" Try this. I guarantee you will VERY quickly come to love it and use it for everything. http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm You can redownload the set too. 8K and 9 are both fixed.

    Fileset 9, all done

Thanks man fixed For those who simply had better luck with Set 8, here is the last version (set 8k) before Set 9 came out. @jimmsta - check the URL in your sig, it has some invalid chars

Beartown is in the readme As for the download problem, no idea

    Fileset 9, all done

Yeah... WU3 was left to shut up ignorant critics who claimed that Windows could no longer be updated. They forget manual downloads from the list TommyP keeps, and WU3 was an option but after a lot of internal debate I decided it's not important, because what really got me thinking was the fact that hotfixes will come to an end on July 13, 2010.

    Fileset 9, all done

"So if it's antivir that delays set 9........" @Brabant - to clear any confusion, Antivir and most others require the Post SP4 Rollup. If you slip that you will be fine. I myself have pre-slipped it so that my slip goes faster. I have also made sure to add the reg entries, which HFSLIP does automatically. So I may misunderstand but if I implied that set 9 won't let antivirus software work, I would be wrong, becuase it really -should- work okay. It was just me at one point that had a problem. I probably didn't read you correctly anyhow since I have had a few beers tonight so never mind me
  22. It's hard to describe the exact mechanism, but when WBEM and WMI are gone, some Windows performance counter files will not function, and that in turn will prevent some utilities from working, like for example, PSLIST from Winternals as well as two or three others, I forget which exactly. IE6 has only 2 or 3 (really) "new" files that IE5.x does not, so using MDAC IE6 removal will not harm anything if IE 6 is not slipstreamed. You can go ahead there.

@Crash & Burn -- I actually used Kubuntu for a while. At least a year. I liked it okay, but when it got to the point where I was twiddling with WINE because I was running more Windows programs than 'nix programs... I realized it was kinda pointless. Look at the tiny uTorrent. Look at the Linux equivalent in 2007/2008 -- WAY bigger, less features. MS Office, Xnews, Adobe Photoshop (don't give me that Gimp or Gimpshop song and dance), it came to the point where I decided to go back to 2000 (and 2003 on a machine). @Muppet Hunter -- if TP gives his blessing we will proceed and pin a thread. I can put it at vorck.com OR simply put a redirect on my page. An important element is, of course, marking old KB's as replaced/obsolete so people can del them from the HF folder. As an added incentive, nearly everyone on the web is giving up maintaining these lists, so if you choose to proceed, your effort alone will drive a lot of traffic to MSFN. That would be a good thing. Scout around for well-maintained, non-abandoned Windows hotfix lists... you won't find many left. BTW you also need patience for people who will IM you the SECOND that a fix comes out if you didn't make an update Let me clear it with Tom though I am sure he'll be okay with pinning a thread and of course handing over the existing source, now frozen, for you to reformat any way you like for your own presentation.

    Windows Updates

Hi folks... I'll repeat the point. It would be ideal if someone took this now, while the changes are minimal. Otherwise the XP list will get pulled since it's going to be a useless resource within a few months. That would be a shame... I don't imagine it would be that much effort to take this up. I don't think it kills me to update 2003, personally. I'm going to solicit in the XP group later today. I don't need XP fixes either, so I'm not gonna do it.
