  2. From XP hotfix thread (Laughs) Well, we're about to issue a new hotfix list for XP anyway. Give this a try
  3. ACK! WHOA!! Okay, first thing's first. HFSLIP is a slipstreamer that replaces older DLLs of the same name with newer ones. So, imagine if a vulnerability exists in the TCP/IP stack of your Windows 2000 SP4. You will address it by downloading the appropriate hotfix, in this case 951748, and put it into the HF directory. Now, once HFSLIP runs, your TCPIP.SYS file will be 5.0.2195.7162, which is the latest, and you don't have to worry about any other vulnerabilities of earlier versions. You don't need to track versions of components, though. Just follow the Win2k update list, the official one for HFSLIP, and it's as simple as this: only put in to HF what we tell you! If a new hotfix replaces an old one, the old is removed from the list. Internet Explorer 5 is entirely replaced by version 6 when you use HFSLIP to slipstream 6. I can't really link anywhere else as a source for that claim, because honestly, no one knows more about IE 5 and IE 6 than the guys here in this subforum The same is the case for every other component. Let's even take DirectX 7 as an example. DirectX 9c not only replaces all of the 7 files, it also adds a bunch of them, so version 7 is totally replaced. If an older DLL never gets installed, it's registry entires don't, either (except for one single DX 7 key in one of the HIVE* files, but I don't want to get too far off topic). I will address the others I haven't so far off the top of my head: BITS1.2 (=w2ksp4?) correct, it's in 2ksp4 BITS2.0 subsumes earlier version IE5.01 (=w2ksp4) correct, and it's patched by monthly hotfixes IE6_SP1 subsumes earlier version OE5 (=w2ksp4) correct, and it's patched by monthly hotfixes OE5_SP3 No, it's OE6 SP1, technically, and this is also patched on a monthly basis XML 2.0 (=w2ksp4?) Yup XML 3.0 (=ie6?) No, not particular to IE6, but included in the Post SP4 Rollup XML 4.0 May be installed separately and does not replace 3 You are correct in surmising that XML 5 isn't specific to Win2k, but rather came with MS Office XML 6.0 May be installed separately and does not replace 4 Details on MS XML packages and versioning information DirectX 7 (=w2ksp4?) Correct There was a DirectX 8 for Windows 2000, and even hotfixes for it, but let's not even go there DirectX 9c subsumes version 7 and 8 WMP 6.4 (=w2ksp4?) Correct WMPcodec 6 (=w2ksp4?) Correct WMP 9 Does not totally replace version 6.4, but don't worry about it WMPcodec 9 Does not totally replace version 6.4, but having earlier codecs is fine MDAC 2.5SP3 (=w2ksp4?) Correct MDAC 2.8sp1 subsumes earlier version .NET FW 1.1 (=w2ksp4?) Does not come with Win2000 .NET FW 2.0 Is totally optional UpdateAgent 3.0 This replaces the Automatic Update in win2kSp4, but not all of the DLLs. Installer 3.1 This is an add-on that is necessary and nothing quite like it came with Win2k I hope I've answered your questions!
  4. I use Intelliadmin here at work to monitor PC usage, which is part of my job. Search for it, I didn't link but it's easy enough to find. It's not freeware but it's worth the price because it is unobtrusive. The end user will not see it running and you can install it remotely.
  5. Gurgelmeyer is gone, but a parallel project is still going on, called HFSLIP (for HotFix Slipstream). Welcome aboard.

Little MSI? No, you need the gazillion hotfixes. TommyP is punching up the hotfix list and it will be put up shortly. You could use the_guy's list at the moment if you want, though it ends in August. As for firewall, I use a hardware one, but my sister in law runs my fileset on her home computers without a firewall. I mean, nothing -- direct to the 'net. To this day when I visit her, her computer is fine. She's never had a problem. Maybe that's something I should try -- hook my home machine up to the net and give my IP address and see if anyone wants to take a crack at it ;-) There is stuff like this, too, that's good for a laugh... FWIW, Zone Alarm Pro is free for a few hours. I've never used it, just so you know.

I know you can remove the Favorites menu with TweakUI, but it would be nice if it was removed out of the box. Its built into explorer, as a menu item. I suppose editing the binary in a reg hack tool could do it. AFAIK tweakui doesn't remove it. I agree I would love it to be gone out of the box. I wonder if Lineback and "OS2Fan2" are the same person? Doubtful; Wendy is a "she" ;-) I can see chimes is 'semi-coloned' but chord and ding aren't. all three give the 'File not found'. Ooops. I meant to have them all removed. I could set them to nothing in the HIVE files too. Thanks for noting that; I haven't paid any attention to system sounds in a long time. Except "Start Windows", This is my Windows startup sound, from 0:56 to 1:08 ;-) 2) Explorer -> View now has Thumbnails as an option. It doesn't do anything which is good. I can't remember seeing this. I saw 'thumbnails' in the registry and thought 'oh, more junk! deleted!!' at that time i didnt know what it was [laughs] Then I discovered that it showed up as a menu item with nothing behind it. So I decided that at some point, I could embed a CLSID for a thumbnail viewer like Irfanview some day so that I can quickly see graphical thumbnails. For now, it will continue to do nothing. Oh and yes I intended set 8e to replace the current. I made no announcement; sometimes I am bad that way! Thanks as always for the testing...

In SHELL.IN_ simply replacing line 106: I decided to just pull those lines out. I never really needed to set the path variable, I was testing it out and just absentmindedly left it in thinking it would cause no harm. I was wrong about that! I said there's too many "s in Axant.in_. No biggie I guess and maybe I'm just wrong. I am looking but I still don't see. My line 100 is "; 842773 BITS" (no prob there) and my line 113 doesn't appear to have a problem either...? How do I get scroll bars in a Code Block? I actually don't know, it used to be automatic. No idea...

Odd, I don't have that, but I DO know what caused it, and I have fixed it, and here is a reg file for you to fix yours. (The reg file attached should fix yours, but I am positive that I fixed the problem in the fileset; it was in shell.inf.) path.reg

I am re-testing now with a CLEAN Win2k with SP4 already slipstreamed, and my hotfix folder has only: D:\2k-trial2\HF\MDAC253-KB927779-x86-ENU.exe D:\2k-trial2\HF\msxml4-KB927978-enu.msi D:\2k-trial2\HF\Windows2000-KB891861-v2-x86-ENU.exe (This is the Rollup) D:\2k-trial2\HF\WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe And I am including the DX9 cabs where they belong. I will post results. Favorites: my fileset removes History: open SHELL.INF and look for [addreg.optional.1] Quick launch: this wouldn't exist but my fileset creates it, see AXANT5 The throbber: OS2Fan2 gave me a regedit to suppress it. The problem is that this will make the Standard Buttons and Address Bar hidden in each window. You can turn them back on of course, but it's kind of a pain. I took it out a long while back but I can add it back into a SHELL optional section. System directory empty: that's on purpose! (Look at an unmodified TXTSETUP, you will see that this is a holdover from Windows NT 3.1! No, Not NT 3.51, it's from 3.1!) I posted this bit of advice in the nLite forum but I don't think they've adopted it as a feature. Only saves a little bit of space anyway, but I put all of my $OEM$ programs in system now instead of system32 so that I can very quickly see what utilities I have without having to search the "jungle" of system32. Ok, update: on a virgin win2k, running the installer, xml4, mdac, and post sp4 rollup, I get some filecopy errors (using my fileset). They are ALL drivers. Textmode filecopy cannot seem to find pjlmon, rca.sys, svgb.icm, tosdvd.sys, etc so I will figure out what's going on here. By the way, while I wait, a useful tip. 1. Download FILEMON and put it in SOURCE\$OEM$\$$\system 2. During setup GUI mode, press SHIFT and F10 to get a command prompt 3. Type filemon 4. Filemon will start. You might get an error, ignore it. 5. You can now "record" the Windows setup process. You can also run REGMON too. 6. Before Windows reboots the last time, save the results. I will warn you that with all of that data, saving will take a long time, maybe a minute or two. Don't worry, the program is NOT locked up. 7. Once you save the log file to the desktop, you can reboot. 8. When Windows starts for the first time you'll have a logfile of all of the files Windows used in the setup process. Ok, "clean" windows sp4 + rollup + fdvfileset is done. Result: No 'search internet' and no 'task scheduler'. ?!? Maybe try adding that one line to HFSLIP that I have in a codebox in my earlier post?

Well, I'm confused too. Here are 2 screenshots. I don't see these problems. I have 3,841 files but I deleted many. (This goes WAY off topic, but here is the story about my source: I use HFSLIP. Because I had too many hotfixes and was losing track of what files were in which fixes, I manually slipstreamed 90% of the hotfixes -- I had to, because of the way I work with files, I need to know which files are updated. It got tiring to have to keep 2 full directories just to see what files are new, so I ran HFSLIP, then manually extracted all of the hotfixes (that took a while) and did a comparison to check to see if everything was going in. I determined that HFSLIP does not skip any fixes and slipstreams all of the reg edits in the INF files without skipping any. I also needed to determine which reg edits were redundant (already in HIVE files), which were unnecessary (like the filters added in the post-sp4 rollup) and which were in fact necessary. Once that was done, I added new regedits to my HIVE files or in the case of IE, to IE.INF. Now, going forward, my HF dir contains only: D:\opsys2000ie5\HF\MDAC253-KB927779-x86-ENU.exe D:\opsys2000ie5\HF\msxml4-KB927978-enu.msi D:\opsys2000ie5\HF\WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe As we enter 2009, I will be adding hotfixes to HF and not slipstreaming them manually. This way, for my own purposes, I have a fully up to date 2000 source and have been able to verify HFSLIP's ability right along. Because I can verify it, I do not recommend manual slipstreaming except in very unusual cases, like modifying HIVESFT.INF to add current time zone information as found in the file in my fileset.) I do have a change made to HFSLIP itself: under "FDV CLEANUP UTILITY" I have added a line: ECHO>>SOURCESS\I386\HFSLIPWU.INF HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx\ZZZ",989,0,"RunDll32.exe %%11%%\AdvPack.Dll,LaunchINFSection %%10%%\inf\ie.inf,FDVPATCH" ECHO>>SOURCESS\I386\HFSLIPWU.INF HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx\ZZZ",990,0,"RunDll32.exe %%11%%\AdvPack.Dll,LaunchINFSection %%10%%\inf\shell.inf,FDVPATCH" But this shouldn't affect these things... bottom line: my result should be the same as anyone else's.

okey-doke, I will get on these issues too. I for some reason do not have all of these, kinda weird. Its 1am and I need to go out for something. I have a gas station about 50 seconds from my house but all they have is candy and soda :-P
  14. What's the driver? Link to it on the 'net. Maybe there's something odd with the file, or its syntax, that is throwing nLite off, because it should just work. Also, you can get USB support during setup IIRC but only at the GUI setup stage, not the early first part of copyfiles.
  15. I am sure some folks know this, it's something I have been doing for a while now and in case some are unaware of this little 'trick', I present it here. First, you need Filemon for Windows. Put it into your install media's $OEM$ folder (you know -- $OEM$\$$\system32 -- I'm not going to get into that here) so that on install it gets dumped into system32. Start the install process, and as gui setup begins, hit Shift and F10 for a command prompt. cd to system32 and type filemon. A license agreement comes up, click ok An error might come up, click ok As setup runs, filemon catalogs what files are doing what during the setup process. Don't forget to click the 'save' button before the final reboot. When you save, it's going to be a LOT of data, so the save might take a while. Be patient, it doesn't mean that the program has locked up. You also have other options during setup such as Regmon, Process Explorer, and of course, Pinball...

Try this one Most issues are fixed I am looking at the 'clicking on REG files gives an error' and I get it too, still, but I don't know what is causing it right now. All other issues should be fixed now. Thanks for the bug reporting!!
  17. Put README.TXT into your i386 directory Replace the contents of your AXANT5.INF file with this: ------------ [Version] signature="$Windows NT$" ClassGUID={00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} AdvancedINF=2.5 LayoutFile=layout.inf [DestinationDirs] file.copy.dt = 16409 ; All Users\Desktop [SourceDisksNames] 1 = "Windows 2000 CD",\cdrom_ip.5,,\i386 [SourceDisksFiles] readme.txt = 1 [DefaultInstall] CopyFiles = file.copy.dt [file.copy.dt] readme.txt [Strings] I use this in my fileset, so I know it works.
  18. You can make Windows 2000 totally FLY in speed. And, using nLite, you can make XP run faster than it normally would.
  19. Well, try putting a SP2 (two) setupdd.sys into SOURCESS\i386 and see if that works in your VM...? Worth a shot. FDV, travelling on business
  20. This is likely not an HFSLIP issue... it's a bad RAM issue. (No, seriously!) Try running memtest, or swapping out modules and trying new ones.
  21. I -just- went through this myself. Do you have the resources to make a bootable PE disk? You can use 'Driver Wizard' (on the PE already) to download drivers -- it might be able to find the correct ones for you. I made a PE disk (Ultimate Boot CD 4 Win) and added 'Unknown Device Identifier' and ran it and got the Hardware ID string for the disk controller (looks something like "PCI\VEN_13E6&DEV_3603&SUBSYS_004613E6") and then I downloaded ALL related drivers for the computer including some from the mobo manufacturer, then did a text search for the Hardware ID string, found the .INF file, crafted it to fit within TXTSETUP.SIF, and integrated it manually (it worked fine).

  23. Sorting by metadata, eh? Have a look at this, it might help
  24. It does. I guarantee it will make your machine fly. Wait til tomorrow when I update the fileset.
  25. Here's a few Q's for you about modular PSU's... 1. don't you worry that over time the modular plugs would get loose? 2. what if in the future you need to replace them because you're rough on them, are they standardized in the industry? Could I buy new modular plugs on their own? (New to this modular stuff... have steered clear out of ignorance of them)
