  1. well the comp crashed on me, so i upgraded wile i was replacing it. at this point any game i cant play i'll just throw away. the new comp is defenetly set up for gamming. its lowes ratting is in computing power.LOL im now running a NVIDIA 9800 512 iwth 512M dedicated ram with 2303MB available memory. and lost planet plays great, looks like a movie. and all for right at $1000.00 tax included. thanks for the help. James
  2. Sorry about the color changes, I thought it would help keep stuff separate. I have most of the stuff loaded on the new laptop and will attempt the wireless connection with the router tomorrow. I still need to get Microsoft outlook working ??
  3. glad to hear the site was not carrying a virus. i had a full battery and was on a plug here at home trying to get it working. it just had a bad hard drive or like you said it came from the coffee shop. stuff happens. for the record, i in no way intended anyone to think i was putting any blame on this site. you guys have been nothing but help to me. 4 that a thank you . the geeks at BB replaced the laptop, or rather took it back and i upgraded. figured i would improve my graphics wile i was at it. on the brighter side i now have a clean network setup to start over with. but i need to take a day off and get the new lap up and working first. i went to a ASUS G50VT really nice setup with a NVIDIA 9800m GeForce card in it for graphics. thanks again James
  4. sorry, not trying to ignore you. i went to the link you gave me for drivers , downloaded them and the owners manual at the coffee shop . got home and went to turn on the computer only to find its crashed, dead, nothing ??? couldn't find my way back to here for help, but found another microsoft linked site to help as well as the comps home site. any way long and short of it is i'm on my desktop now but will get back to you and this as soon as i get the new laptop up and running. big thanks for all the help, i really do appreciate it and your being so patient with my computer illiteracy. James P.S. the site asked me to download acrobat 9.1 when i went for the owners manual. i suspect thats a possible virus, or my hard drive died on its own ?? no operating system and even the recovery disk they gave me would not work. i even made a new one from the VISTA site, again mo can do. p.s.P.S. man do i suck at this computer stuff.
  5. OK so I'm trying to figure out this ip address conflict possibility ??? i cant find how to make changes to the pi's ? and are we talking ipv4 address or ipv6 address or gateway addresses ??? here are a few i found ( but no idea how to change them ? ) and not shore these are the settings I'm looking for ?? Vista-laptop Wired network info Physical address 00-23-54-F2-47-CF DHCP Enabled yes IPv4 ip address 192.168.0.15 Ipv4 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Ipv4 default gateway 192.168.0.1 Ipv4 DHCP server 192.168.0.1 Ipv4 DNS Server 192.168.0.1 Ipv6 ip address 2002;49d;50b2;a.f5f2.f0c;c8af;262 Wireless settings Physical address 00-21-5d-2b-6f-c4 auto configuration ipv4.… 169.254.60.35 Ipv4 subnet mask 255.255.0.0 Ipv1 default gateway blank Ipv4 DNS Server blank Ipv4 wins server bank Link-local ipv6 address fe;;41e6;d26d;a5eb;3c23%12 so is this what I'm looking for ?? it doesn't look like the pic's in the articles ?? but the one on USB only connect is leaving me with a lot of blanks as to how to get to the places to change settings ??? i also don't seem to be able to rid myself of previous versions of networks in XP. i changed over to a new work group on both computers, but even my wired network is now "network2" ??? so my attempt at setting up with just the USB to internal laptop connection is crashing fast. i thin i will try the router version later on today to see if i can get better results. he seems to give better instructions ?? we will see if i can work my way threw it and get hooked up. wish me luck.. first i think i will take a break from all the thinking and play a lil C&C Red alert 3 to calm the nerves. just found out theres an expansion pack. thanks for the help James
  6. having no luck finding access to win.7 spent the day at a coffee shop to have high speed access to the net, but only found one option for win.7 and it was fallowed by a slew of warnings about fake versions that were Trojan or other problematic things like that. why would some one think its funny to crash one one else's computer, especially people u don't know. i mean i know a few people i wouldn't mind getting back at, but even for them crashing a computer is a bit drastic. oh well i guess I'll just have to trudge along in Vista thanks for the help all James
  7. duuuuuuu, i should have gotten that. i was thinking too much to see the obvious. lol
  8. this should be fun, looks like 71 things going on ?? i'll make a list of all the stuff and we can take it from there. im a slow typer, so ill make the list in word and then copy it to here when done. be back in a wile,,,,,,,,,,,a long wile .LOL thanks james
  9. sorry, newbe here. whats a WASD and mouse ????
  10. this is my first laptop and my first computer in 5 years . fist thing i noticed is its got all kinds of trial versions installed. add to that its got about a billion things running when I'm not doing anything ???? whats up with that ?? can i fix it, or reduce the amount of stuff ruining in the background ?? i get the idea of going into the start menu and telling stuff not to start, bu as a newbie or maybe just a non-programmer i have no clue what all this stuff is ?? its not like they tell you in plain English what the stuff is. so how do i know what i can turn off without causing a shutdown or freeze up ?? seems like every thing gives the "warning this may effect the programs or performance of your computer" so whats a newbie to do ???? is there a program that spells it all out for you ?? making it possible to know if its really needed or just taking up space and memory ?? or is it even possible to lose the excess baggage of Vista ?? thanks for the help. James
  11. I'm having ruble with the mouse controller option. every thing moves waaaaaaayyyyyy!!! to fast with the slightest movement of the mouse. i suspect its just a question of figuring out how to slow down the mouse response, but right now it makes e dizzzyyyyy and is not doable as a control. i will try an X-box 360 controller this pay day i think. with the new laptop and all the network stuff this month i have wiped out my game savings and then some. i also want to get rid of some of the extra garbage running on the new laptop ( I'll start a thread about that if i cant find some thing in a search) before really getting into it. for now I'll be OK with my new C&C games. on the brighter side the wife made me do it, so I'm not in trouble with her... :) that's a big + thanks for all the help James
  12. i hope this makes it better not more confusing. sorry its so confusing, the link you gave me seems to walk me threw the hole setup using a wireless router. so i may just g that way to simplify things as its a step by step explanation. as for what i have to work with, I'll try to break it down better computer 1 desktop desktop is running win. XP 32 bit, with all updates installed has a 56K modem ( inside case attached to mother board, came with it) that i connect to the INTERNET directly with. has a NIC (CAT5) card installed ( again inside, came with it ) i added a Belkin N wireless USB Adapter, P58560-B, Ver. 4001 , PT# F5D8053 in hopes of using it as my network link from desktop to laptop. it is hooked up now and the computer said its working properly. before i got the USB network card i tried a Linksys N Rangeplus wireless Router this router is not hooked up but i have sitting in box if needed, or can be returned to save me some $$ computer 2 laptop laptop is running Win. Vista 64bit, probably needs updates as its new and they always want 200MB of updates when you first turn them on has a 56k modem built in ( came like that ) Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0) has Intel® WiFi Link 5100 AGN right now i have the 2 networked together by wire as fallows desktop computer 6ft cat5 cable linksys 5 port workgroup switch ( model # EZXS55W) 50 ft. fastCAT 5e ( run to bedroom for laptop when I'm in there, empty when not) 50 ft. fastCAT 5e ( run to living room for laptop when I'm in there, empty when not) the 5 port workgroup switch is just to keep me from dragging wire back and forth, by allowing me 2 plug in options in the house. so its only used as a convenience, not needed but worked a a splitter for me to have 2 cables. it dose not control my INTERNET, just lets it run threw with the rest of the connection as i have INTERNET sharing (ICS) on my desktop (XP) and it shows up on my laptop network places as a gateway device ( apparently this is Microsoft's way to label it) and i have INTERNET on both computers at he same time. yes i have to turn on my desktop first and connect to the INTERNET with it , then i have it every where as long as i don't disconnect it at the desktop. i also have my printer/scanner attached to the desktop and shared so i can print from it with aether desktop or laptop.( this is also working fine ) this is what i want to do wirelessly. being as the wireless signal will cover the hold house i should not need a router to act as a switch due to only having a total of 2 computers.i should be able to have only the USB adapter attached to the desktop and use the internal laptop wireless, allowing me to get rid of all the cables and the 5 port workgroup switch. i would prefer to use the USB wireless adapter as i have managed to lose its reseat, so i cant return it. the router was returned weeks ago but i picked up a new one today so i could fallow the above article's directions. .................................................................................................... ............................................ Trust me, what you want CAN be done and it's not rocket science. If it comes down to it, you can "reset" both PC's and start from scratch one-step-at-a-time. If you keep "experimenting", you will aggravate the problem. Again, WITH the USB Wireless follow my instructions, and WITH the Router follow the Link (above) instructions. If it doesn't work, you're doing something wrong... .................................................................................................... ............................................. thats what i thought, and don't understand why it all went south on me ??? how would i go about resetting it all back to scratch ?? and as i was looking around in properties to try to find a conflict i noticed the fallowing. Properties for nic card Advanced tab The fallowing properties are available for this network adapter 802. 11 chanel width for band 2.4.……………….20 MHz Only It has an option for AD Hoc Channel 802.11 b/g Ad hoc default wireless mode And so on the desktop is not set the same as the laptop ? laptop is set to 802. 11 chanel width for band 2.4.……………….20 MHz Only desktop is set to property Ad hoc Wireless Mode Value 802.11 B/G Mix (its here now) or 802.11 B only it has several options such as property auto chanel select value enable or disable property Network type value 802.11 Ad hoc or infrastructure so should the 2 computers match here ??? is this a part of the problem ? i was thinking the desktop being set to 802.11 B/G MIX would drop my signal straight maybe but would still be backward compatible with the laptop being an N and backward compatible if its about signal type. i could be wrong, and may not need to mess with any of this ???? keeping in mind the USB wireless adapter is N Type. could just be adding to my problem even worrying about it. did i say thanks for the help and sorry for the head ache, i hope so. if this all makes any sense at all to you?? how would you proceed ??? step one "reset" both PC's and start from scratch one-step-at-a-time. sounds good, how do i proceed ?? i humbly await your advice.
  13. i supose its all what you get used to. i'll have to give it a try. resetting the keys might help, getting used to them will defenetly help. i'll practice on lost planet, then try stepping up to fallout.
  14. i don't have a router any more. i started out with a desktop, wired to router, then wireless from router to laptop wireless. dial up went into desktop then cat5 cable from desktop to router ( not into DSL slot) then went wireless to notebook. when i turned on the router stooped install at the install DSL point. i managed to get it to connect one time with the dial up connection on my desktop showing up on my laptop as a gateway device. all was god i was surfing the web on laptop with just wireless connection, at the same time wife was surfing net on desktop. after i turned it off for the night it wouldn't connect again in the morning, no matter what i did. so i started thinking the router was the problem, and not needed with only 2 computers. so i just got a wireless USB network device for the desktop. the new laptop has a built in wireless network some where ??? i had better luck with creating an AD-HOC network with just the desktop USB wireless device and laptop. then it seemed like Vista on my laptop would setup security on the laptop and cut the connection ??? i asked at my local computer repair shop and they just said it cant be done ?? but i did it a few times so i know it can be done, and it seems like it should be a simple thing. its not turning out to be so simple . the desktop has Windows XP on it the laptop has Vista 64bit on it. i went on line and downloaded every update i could find for XP and they were all already installed ?? it seems i will have to take the control away from some thing in order to keep them from conflicting ?? just don't have a clue how to do so ??? if i need to get another router, thats fine with me. i just need some one to tell me what i need and what to do to make it stay connected. right now I'm hooked up with cat5 cable so i can have an access point in bedroom and in living room without dragging wire back and forth. so i added a router/switch so i could have to cat 5 cable's hooked up at once. basically using it as a splitter. works fine without , i just want 2 points i can plug in. I'll g threw the articles you mentioned. thanks for the help. James
  15. i have dial up on my desktop computer and want to share its connection with my laptop. problem is as soon as i try to hook up the router it asks for a DSL or cable connection. i cant seem to get one to just pass along the network connection with shared dial up. i made it do it once, but when i turned it off to go to bed it was gone. never to return. in only using 2 computers so it would seem i don't even need a router, just a usb wireless network adapter, thats what in doing now, again i got it to work a few times but nothing consistent.. so is it possible to get into the programming of the router ?? i heard maybe change its ip address so it can just be a carrier or pass along the signal, is this possible ???? any ideas ?? thanks James
  16. i kinda do need a laptop. the wife wants me out with the family as much as possible. our desktop is stashed away in a small supposed to be bedroom we turned into comp & laundry room. so not only am i like i'm not home. the chair there is killing me. i really need to be in my recliner or bed most of the time to keep the wait off my spine. i suspect i don't need to play the first person games off my laptop. it will play my C&C games fine, so ill just live with that. just a little surprised to see a NVDIA GForce 9300m fall short. i expected more from it. not shore i want to put any more $$ into a laptop. being on a fixed income i already spent too much. but the wife made me do it, so i just wanted to try the other games. at this point if i can figure out how to network the 2 wireless I'll be happy with what i have and play as needed or allowed by it, i suspect i will need to go back to a wireless router. that is if i can figure out how to bypass it wanting DSL or Cable for the internet option. i need to share internet threw my desktop. i managed to get it to work once , no idea how but it was working and i was happy. turned it off and that was it gone. I'll start a thread about controlling a wireless router and see if some one can walk me threw a setup that will work. thanks James
  17. thanks for the help. Duhh! (at me) And bear in mind I do not have Vista (it's a different beastie, so you may need help in the Vista section on this as to location of some items). wish i could say the same, Vista seems to be the root off all my new problems.. unfortunately this all sounds like things i have tried already, but i will go back and walk threw it all again to make shore i did not miss some thing. i started out with a router. problem with that was the router wants a cable or DSL connected to it and wants to run the show. any chance you know how to get into the router and tell it to just pass the signal without a DSL or cable but as INTERNET sharing ?? with only 2 computers i should not need a router . i don't have a problem using it if its the best way to go. that is if i can figure out how to get it to let me do it with dial up ??? i need to find out how ? this was the reason i went to just using a USB on the desktop. the only reason I'm using a router on my wired setup is so i don't have to drag the wire back and forth from living room to bed room. if i was willing to drag the wire i would not need it, so in turn i should not need it with wireless as the same signal would be all over the house and i don't need to divide it to keep multiple computers separate. thats where it starts to drive me nutzzzz, it should be so simple as a simple 2 computer home network. i don't have a problem with turning on the desktop and starting up the dial up connection before being able to use it on the laptop. the wife is most of the time on the net on the desktop anyway, so its already on. LOL i set both computers to work group home network ( just for simplicity ) but you were correct that it needed fixing as XP and Vista by default name them differently. quick search on "subnet" thanks, I'll give that a shot. for some reason i alway have terrible luck with searches. must always use the wrong search word ?? thanks oodles!!! I'll take another look at the search and my settings. with a lil luck I'll report back with an all good up and working ??? thanks James
  18. Keyboard and mouse all the way! WOW no kidding, last time i tried that was an old tom Clancy's rainbow 6 game it drove me nutzzzzz how do ya keep the key's strait ???? made me give up on first person games until now. new computer new start, new toys. been surviving on C&C all this time, ready to step up to the big boys toys. although i just got warcraft3 so that will distract me for a bit.LOL thanks for the info James
  19. is dying to start playing some of these games. i got lost planet 2 weeks ago, spent $700 on a new laptop to play it on and still cant get it playable. i figured i would star with an older game and work my way up to the really good stuff ( like Fallout, and now Oblivion) what are you all using for a controller ??? will the XBOX360 controller work on my PC ?? i picked up a Philips controller, but its not right at all ?? directional stick is off, up is left, left is down, its not going to be an option. wish me luck, some day soon i hope i will get my chance to play too. it sounds like its going to be a blast.
  20. 1 - hook up a cat cable between my desktop and my laptop - Works (may we assume that this is via the "switch box" and not a crossover-type deal?) yes using switch, but only so i can have one cable in bed room and one in living room. so i don't have to aether drag the cable back and forth, or unplug one and plug in other behind the desktop. so i have only 2 computers involved desktop ( with dial up internet ) Windows XP, USB network adapter N laptop ( needs to get internet threw desktop) Windows Vista built in wireless network adapter N+ only need switch to simplify 2 locations ( same computer) switch connected to desktop with 5 ft cable, 2 Ea 50 ft. cables connected to switch that i plug laptop into one or other cable depending on where i am. 2 - "tried to setup with a usb storage device" - now that part confuses me 3 - "win.XP wants to create a floppy disk to transfer info with" - you must be referring to the Home Network Wizard; when using windows home network wizard it has you put network setting onto a floppy disk or USB storage device to transfer settings to other computers you want to network. USB dongle, USB Storage device ???(lexmark 512MB USB storage device) 3. continued, unnecessary and can be bypassed via a tick-mark ("No I'm fine thanks, XP") Please explain ?? 4 - "program that came with the usb wireless network device" - assume this is the "USB wire-N network adapter"? yes came with BELKIN N wireless adapter ver.4001 , P58560-B , Pt# F5D8053. has drivers and software to support/set up network i un-installed then reinstalled just the drivers for the USB wireless adapter. It's installed, recognized by computer and working correctly. network software, not so good. refused to work, conflicted with setup wizard !??? would not turn off to let wizard control and would not control as it said XP wizard was controlling ?? 5 - (out of order...) - "would seem a bridge between the wire and wireless" i tried to bridge the wired LAN and wireless LAN on desktop ( computer sharing internet connection) so the wireless connection would also have access to internet ????? one of many attempts to get internet ( gateway device ) to show up in wireless network map of devices. i named the wireless network adhoc. with each attempt to connect it showed up as a new network name of adhock + # ( adhoc1, adhock2, adhoc3, and so on ??) i can at times get desktop computer to show up in wireless network places on laptop, but never with gateway device ( internet access ). correction i did it a few times but never consistently. once with a wireless router instead of the wireless USB device, then a few times with USB wireless device. but never 2 times in a row ??? 3 - may/may not even be necessary explain please ??? or direct me how to ( can be bypassed via a tick-mark ) 4 - which one are you trying to install this to? it's the driver for the USB Adapter... installing on desktop ( windows XP with dial up connection), yes it has drivers and a control program. program uninstalled, drivers reinstalled, device is working properly. 5 - which one are you bridging on? bridging the wired and wireless networks in network places on desktop computer ( the one sharing, originating dial up connection, widows XP ) x - only ONE PC may be connected to the Internet; the other "passes through" it via the "bridge" defined on the first and must therefore have both the Internet (your dial-up) and the USB Device. i suspect i used the bgige wrong ??? as i bridged both network connections on the computer with the dial up connection. it seemed from the network wizard that it was to connect the shared internet to the 2 networks needing to share ( or let other computer pass threw to internet) so i bridged the wired network connection on my desktop ( one with dial up) to the wireless network on my desktop. i did not bridge the 2 computers as in bridge the desktop to the laptop, is that what i was supposed to do ??? sorry to be so confusing, as you can probably tell i am way confused. so its kinda hard to be clear when you are lost to start with. i hope this will help clear it up. thanks for the help James
  21. This has *NOTHING* to do with wireless networks sorry, thought peer to peer software to be for setting up or controlling network ( wired or wireless) my apologies James
  22. well you can probably tell from the fact i did not know what it is that i don't have it if its not part of here, and I'm new here so i don't know what it all is. as for needing to reload all your programs and settings ?? well i don't have any installed now ?? except what came with this thing, most of which seem to be 60 day trial versions. i have a few games installed and will be installing works 2003 at some point. but figure i will wait till i get the rest figured out. so will i be doing a bad thing to go to win7 ??
  23. Most companies that sell notebooks do not sell them to be gaming machines that was the problem with the laptop i returned to get this on, its supposed to be set up for games. i just don't know how to configure the proper settings to do so. if that's not the case, they lied to me at the store again. i have 12 more days to find out if i need to take this one back too, or not. i hope 4 not. i will check out the gaming section, thanks. James
  24. will any of them help me set up a wireless network ???? i need help baddly PLZZZZ thanks James
  25. OK so i hook up a cat cable between my desktop and my laptop and bam, its all good. it finds, connects and sets everything up for me. so why is a wireless version so much trouble ?? or am i just screwing something up and don't know it ?? it would seem a bridge between the wire and wireless network connections should tell the computer's all that's needed to know so it will work. i tried to setup with a usb storage device but when i take it from the originating computer ( desktop with XP) to the laptop, all seems OK. then when it goes back to the desktop it cant be read and i think the laptop said insufficient data or some ting like that also. win.XP wants to create a floppy disk to transfer info with , but no floppy reader on my laptop. so that's no help. i tried to use the program that came with the usb wireless network device and it wont function right. it keeps telling me windows it trying to control the network, change setting to allow windows to have control or turn it off. OK so i tried to set it to let windows control and it wont let me save those settings ???? keeps reverting back to trying to control so windows tells me some thing else is trying to control ???? as a result neither will take control and I'm stuck in yaya land. i have dial up so going threw a wireless router is out of the question as it wont let you even finish the install without attaching a cable or DSL line to it ??? any ideas would be greatly appreciated every one keeps telling me it cant be done. i have made it work once with a router and again once with just the USB but Vista keeps asking me to give a location for the network (home , work , public) and then it sets security settings ( i guess) and bang, i lose the internet ???? or its just not there the next time i go to sign in ?? i would love to go to DSL or cable but none available out here in the country with the cows and wheat fields. satellite is out of the question due to $$$ ( come to think of it DSL or Cable might be also if i could get it) i have $80 invested in a wire network ( 2 cat cables @ 50ft each and a switch box) also have $80 in wireless with the USB wire-N network adapter. i would love to get the 100 ft. of cat cable running around my ceiling off there, not to mention my internet speeds are 3 times as fast when i has the wireless working as they are now on the cat cable. with long downloads i end up with speeds in the bts not Kbits, its horrid. please save me. thanks James
