  1. B) dose Remote Desktop come with XP or Vista or both ? i'll see if i can find it on one of the computers. Thanks James
  2. i know my laptop supports a 2nd drive. so i wanted to add one to store all my pic's, tunes, and miscellaneous stuff to keep my OS drive clean, clear and fast. i know it has a 320GB SATA hard drive (7200 rpm) now, but when i look on newegg for drives they have like 79 Results when i search under "SATA hard drive (7200 rpm)" they don't all seem the same ?? some are, Form Factor: 3.5", others are Form Factor: 2.5" ?? then its: Cache: 16MB,Cache: 32MB,Cache: 8MB and ; Average Seek Time: 8.9ms, or Average Latency: 4.2ms i foolishly thought all i needed to do was look for SATA hard drive (7200 rpm) to get type and speed to stay the same as original install. seems like no such luck. so what do i look for?? or would i just be best off to drop it off for some one else to do it. i have replaced hard drives and ram, even a CPU heat sink with built in fan, in my desktop. but only opened one laptop, to change out 2 rams from 1 gig to 2gig each. only one cover and pop them in, but i don't think i got them in all the way and locked down. fear of breaking them kept me from clicking (pushing hard enough) them down ?? so what do you think ?? easy addition ?? leave it to the pro's ?? thanks for the impute. James
  3. Yes I wish I could magically adjust my motherboard to support intel core i7 CPU's and while I'm there I will make DDR3 magically fit into the slot. You might want to research what you say before you say it:( i didn't say it i asked it ?? i will look around in wikipedia, not shore if it will explain the above but dose look like a good reference point. thanks. cool, i7 CPU looks like a good thing. how do i find out what i have ?? do i have it ??? i have Intel centrino 2 duel core inside thats about the only part i did understand. hey, but look at all the cool stuff i am learning now.
  4. need to access and control other computer on my home network so i can turn on and off the INTERNET from the laptop. a few other things i would like to be able to do as well. any chance there is a free program out there for this ??
  5. Ponch; well that helped confuse me. i have 4GB DDR2 in my laptop as RAM and DDR3 in the video card ??? whats wikipedia ? starcraftmaster ; do you play on line or just at home ?? and do you also play command and conquer ?? I'm a huge fan of all those type games. just got C&C 3 and red alert 3. want the expansion pack for red alert 3 but it seems to be download only at this point. not an option on dial up so i gotta wait till i get to the coffee shop to download or wait till it goes hard copy. i need to check out star-craft with my new laptop with max graphics. will be cool to see all the stuff i was missing on my desktop comp. well that is it will load in Vista. lost a few games when i went to reinstall all my older games. still have a few to try out.
  6. i do have my server set to keep mail. i had it like that wile i was trying to get a mail server to work in and out.I'll try changing that. i tried outlook from office 2003 when i installed office, but couldn't get it to send ?? so now i am back to windows mail that came with Vista, as said its supposed to be an updated version of outlook. we all know how great the updated version of thins can be. i looked into if it keeps a copy after its downloaded and it doesn't have any copies, but i could only find an option to keep a copy of outgoing mail to change to don't keep a copy.?? it is completing the download and send. how would i have my pop3/SMTP listed twice ?? ha, found it. i did have it listed 2 times in my mail account. have no idea how i got it but seems i did have it twice. thanks all for the help submix8c; big thanks for the step by step, just what this new be needed. led me right to the problem.
  7. i finally got my mail to work both in and out, but now it downloads eve thing 2 times ??? any clue as to why or how to stop it. its not really hurting any thing just a bit annoying ? thanks James
  8. ?? my mother board to allow DDR3 ?? where do you guys learn this stuff ??? i got plenty of free time, where should i start ??
  9. dude they come in blue. thats way cool. i have the brown version. cool for not showing dirt or finger prints on the inside as mine is black inside. if they had told me i could get it in blue and black i would have gone that way no question. but i still love the brown and gold version i have. its way more computer than i will need for a long time, call me a happy camper. now all i gotta do is save up some more $$ to get oblivion and fallout 3 ( in that order ) . although i still have to get threw command and conquer 3, C&C generals, &C generals zero hour, C&C red alert 3, oh ya and C&C's Yuri's revenge. so I'll have lots to play wile i save up. lost most interest in the lost planet as its a rush threw thing and I'm not a big fan of the run threw kill and go as fast as you can. any way its a smoking fast comp with great graphics. i maxed out the graphics in C&C 3 made 3 huge bases with massive defenses, the made an attack with well over 100 units counting infantry and vehicles to try to bog it down. it didn't even phase it. they all attacked at full speed no lag or anything. my desktop would start to bog at about 45 units on low rezz. this thing is just smoking fast, and thats without over clocking it, just running it on factory specks. i would definitely recommend this laptop to a Friend or any one for that matter, its great for games. OK i celebrated enough.............well for the moment any way. i do plan on geting an under the unit fan thingy though, some how i just dont see replacing the graphics card as that easy. always better to not have to.
  10. sweet, that the kind of game im looking for. a game i will still play 3 years from now. i still play my C&C games from 10 years ago, just love them lil critters. looking forward to Oblivion first then fallout. just have to let the wallet recover from buying this laptop a bit first. thanks James
  11. ASUS G50VT series its way cool, has 2 over clock settings to speed up the CPU .normal, fast, and fastest. its way more then i need or will need in the near future, so I'm good to go for a wile. as for overheating, even with my games on highest graphics its not even working hard. kinda worm air coming out of the vent but nothing bad. i don't bother to over clock it, and run the games below max graphics to help me see them better. too much smoke and heat waves with the explosions to tell what your shooting at . its just way cool. $899.00 + Tax. oh ya and it looks cool as all get out with the cool design and flashing lights in the lid. 12. hey guys, are Oblivion and fallout 3 rush threw games?? or can you take your time and wander around looking for cool stuff or just checking things out ?? kinda like metal gear solid, or is it more like lost planet or medal of honor ?? in lost planet you have an eco soot that you have to keep filled up so you have to rush to the next check point to fill it or kill a bug to get a little. if ya run out of bugs you gotta hurry. i found in medal of honor you really need to run threw killing fast and move as well. i like games that you cam spend more time wandering around in. metal gear has limited wandering space, but you can go slow and check out or kill as you feel the mood. I'm looking to get a new game and was wondering if Oblivion and fallout 3 fell more into the wander and kill as you want mode or more of the rush if you want to live kind of thing ?? so how about a whats it like on them ??
  13. the usb is a network adapter, i just couldn't get into it to fix the IP address conflict. well i couldn't get into the router aether for that matter. i had the best results with the usb as far as making a regular connection to the laptop, just couldn't get the INTERNET to pass threw it to the laptop ?? but i could get into the desktop folders from my laptop with the usb no problem. just a question of consistency and INTERNET that was the problem. I'm shore its also some thing simple to get it working and I'm just not getting it. no biggie, all is good now. I'll just throw the USB on e-bay or some thing to get rid of it as i don't have a receipt for it. short story, its all good and I'm happy. now off to play some games.
  14. all is good now, cant thank you all enough. i could not access the wireless router threw XP, or rather i could get to it but not make any changes. explorer would lose it when i went to save changes?? so i took a shot st it threw my laptop with Vista and it took the changes and is now working great. it was an IP address conflict as you said, well you and all the articles . i just couldn't find access to it and then make the changes. i still cant seem to get into the wireless usb adapter, so i went with the router. accessed it threw Vista's network places, under manage view computers and devices. did a double click on the router and boom i was in. made a change to the last .1 of the address changing it to .22 closed it up and chose home as the security location. i took down the fire wall wile doing all this . its back up now but I'm not shore i need it if I'm coming in threw the desktop doesn't the desktop cover the security needs ?? better safe than sorry. all is good now, i could not ask for more out of the new comp, or network setup. i have windows mail working in and out, the wireless network is running strong ( well at dial up speeds ) and games are way cool graphics, way better than my desktop could ever hope for. just need to work out my N52te and I'll be good to go. the N52te is not a huge deal, but will help out in 1st person games. i can live with or without it, the computer is good to go.
  15. sorry, the model is a ASUS G50VT series. its set up with 4GB of ram now and plenty fast for all my games.its set up for gamming i was just looking into future possibilities. in the other post i had a asus 90 series i think, but it crashed and i returned it and got this one.
  16. nope, i just had to give up on XP and use vista to reconfigure the router. and gave up on the USB, but hay its all good now so i can chill out and play some games.
  17. thanks guys, i was just wondering if it would help with games. the new laptop is plenty fast. just never hurts to add a lil. redhatcc : sorry about the wrong place, i just figured gamers would be the first to look into it as its showing up on gamer comps already and thats about all i see it in. thanks all. James
  18. cool, i must have been reading a very old post. if its been out that long i probably downloaded it with windows updater, yep. just looked at the properties screen, i have sp1 installed. at one point i could not wait to get rid of vista, but now every thing is finally falling into place and working fine. this new laptop is well setup to handle games and every thing else has finally fallen into place. i have my wireless dial up working ( i owe thanks to Vista among others for that) if PC Decrapifier takes the extra junk out i should be fine. after all i don't use the OS much any way. LOL i will look into a clean copy of Vista for future needs. windows 7 would have been nice before i finally got every thing working, but now it would require a complete rework after install i don't think i could go threw that again. to be honest, i suck at this computer stuff. i think some courses are in order.I'm going to look into that at my local VO-Tec school. thanks to all for the help James
  19. so can i just pop DDR3 on place of DDR2 or do i need to see if the mother board will support it of flash the bios ? any one done this ?? where do i start looking into it ?? maker of comp ?? just thought it would be fun to try to zip things up even more .
  20. i punched in the key settings i needed for lost planet, saved them and went to try it out in the game. but it reverted back to default settings. this left me without a grenade throwing option, no map or PDA access, and some ruff stretches for a guy missing 1/2 his bird finger. ( i should have taken mom seriously when she said shoot that again and I'll break it off. ) OK so it wasn't mom, but still makes for a tuff reach to the outer keys and a clumsy inside keys. short version is I'm having trouble getting the new settings to work. would i be better off to reset the keys in the game to match the controller ?? 1/2 the problem is they made this ting too controllable i think?? just too many options for the average Joe trying to play a game or too. can any one help out here ?? thanks James
  21. well i upgraded to a gamer laptop, so graphics are sweet and no longer an issue. so now its still the keys that are getting me. i picked up a N52TE key pad. having trouble keying it in right ?? i will have to check for a post on it, or start on if there is not one here yet. with a lil luck one of you guys will have one and meat me in the new post to help me set it up. Oblivion is definitely next on my must play list, then its on to Fallout.
  22. I'm all hooked up and surfing wireless, yaaaa the struggle is over and i can Finlay get on to enjoying my new laptop. now off to the gaming. thanks for the help. i ended up having to use a wireless router to get the job done, but its up and working great now. i hate to say it but it turned out to be VISTA that took over and gave me the access needed to get the router tweaked to work for me. XP refused to help but is willing to share its INTERNET connection with the router so i can grab it with my laptop. its all good.
  23. no one provides an OS disk any more i don't think. in the process of getting to this laptop i went threw 3 brands and 4 laptops, none provided an OS disk. ASUS provides a recovery disk, or rather 2. but Toshiba and acer gave you nothing and it just told you on startup to make one. i guess I'll just let the stuff run. the new computer is set up to put max. resources to games, so Vista is not hurting anything. it gets second shot at ram after my games that get dedicated ram. thanks for the help and idea's. i don't think sp1 is out for vista yet is it ? seems like i read some where its not out to the general public yet ?? thanks James
  24. i decided to add a belkin N52TE to help me get used to computer games. kind of a middle ground between mouse and game control. still need to get it tweeked in but so far im loving it. some one had a clue when they decided to make this bad boy. its all good, check it out here. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1192233008066 hope the link works if not i suspect any game store will have one, or you can look at best buy . com thanks for the help trying to get the keys to work for me is not the best option, i think this is a great starting point to convert over to comp. games
