  2. I had gathered by this: that the package was attempted manually on a deployment of the existing source. If not, then I would totally recommend that as well.
  3. I was in the process of trying the MSDN workarounds: Disabling IIS admin Starting the SSRS None of those worked. deleted the *group SIDS in the reg When I executed a last time in frustration. It got past the initialization portion, and then I hit cancel after not seeing a difference in the install. This hung the process (naturally) so I killed it in taskmanager. I really wish this had not worked as luck is not very effective troubleshooting. No registry entry for the fix, no patches displayed on SQL registry edits in appcache and muicache, trash in c:\windows, 954606 4 places in control panel. I think I killed what was going to be a successful install. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925976 - ended up being the big winner.
  4. Thanks. It just started showing up in my updates today so your timing is impecable. If you could continue posting my issues before I experience them I would be much obliged.
  5. http://www.msfn.org/board/lofiversion/index.php/t62341.html Good thread on joining. The OP was doing it old school, but they still go through the things to look at from the .sif side and where to find your error log.
  6. WU keeps failing it on my XP SP3, so it is not purely a Vista issue.
  7. The download from filewatcher was good (i used the .th server). To avoid the registration either run an admin install on the package or use uniextract. Then install the .msi with /quiet. Still does not satisfy my need to be able to edit a single line in a single config file and leave like I was never there. But its good for extraction.
  8. I would go with something like speedtest.net and get up/down, more than just relying on ms elapsed until server response to a single request. a tracert or enhanced version of will show you how many miliseconds you are losing between your internal hops. In school we had one that logged in microseconds but the name escapes me.
  9. Your description runs a 30mbit fibre channel, into a switch, that has an old router plugged into it, does not sound incredibly ideal but leads to only speculation. What kind of router (speeds/ports) are you plugging your Fios into? What kind of switch (speeds/ports)? Maybe run a tracert to a known live destination, or hit a site like speedtest with and without your internal hops?
  10. http://www.msfn.org/board/Taskbar-Position...try-t11854.html -recommends moving the taskbar, rebooting, then exporting the key. attached is a .bmp highlighting all the changes made to the key when the taskbar is moved (WinXP).
  11. load up the sp2 in a virtual machine, copy over the sp3, double click. Or delete that copy and download another and try and slipstream it, whichever would be quicker. Maybe integrate from the command line will give you a more descript error.
  12. sounds like a bad/corrupt copy of the exe. did you try running the package an already loaded sp2?
  13. Just write a batch that runs the silent installs of the apps you want. Search "%app name% + silent install" for each item, and you are going to end up with all lines you need for your batch. Just make sure you use start /wait so they dont run all over each other.
  14. thats when i get 'operation not supported', whether i attempt to perform the procedure on the entire extracted cab or just the extracted .cfg from inside the cab.
  15. Thats a nice gui for extracting, thanks. (I think uniextract succeded with 7zip but just extracted). Still does not allow me to replace or edit. I get a lot of 'operation not supported' and 'can not update file' errors.
  16. I used uniextract to unpack it and found the config file and single line that i need to edit (just repathing a home folder from c to d). Problem is I lack skills in the whole repacking department. I have all of last nights experience with Orca, that actually peaked my interest. Which led to the question, that if I dont want to change the installer at all, just one character in one existing file and leave everything else intact, whats the easiest method?
  17. There is a config file inside an msi in which I need to change a single path. Is there a simple way to edit the file. I've got the extract and edit part, which made me want to ask if a solution exists that allows to simply edit a file and save with no repacking.
  18. have you tried getting away with a Net stop msiserver after the install, maybe whoever needs it next will call the new stuff? (could very well yield the cant be accessed error but I'd try it) The intermittent functionality makes it brutal. The key looks fine when you comment out all the 3.1 stuff and run it?
  19. yeah they shouldnt run in safemode out of the runonce. Since the entry remained present when you booted into safe mode that just shows it was not attempting and failing. Why not slipstream installer3.1? that way you can eliminate its peculiar function from the runonce. KB893803 /integrate:%source% might help if you post the other entries you are trying to run and see if they might be to blame as well.
  20. if your interp is correct you deserve those stars. I went with nerevars translation so at least the answers were linear towards retrieving plain text from the asterix in a command prompt. Although it indeed may not be the query.
  21. (If you got 0%) It seems it would be difficult to jack up every entry in what is seemingly a thorough .reg and not have very obvious errors/entries. Maybe its the way you are calling the file? regedit /s %path%\RegistryEdits.reg If you place your file in your loaded os and call it from the command prompt does it work?
  22. yeah tigerdirect has old school SDRAM starting at $12. I know shipping to australia is a little brutal, but thats a very light piece.
  23. yeah, thats totally not DOS. a search for asterix password recovery should help, maybe + windows command prompt
  24. Like a CD with a folder full of programs. And maybe a batch file in the root that when you double click executes some silent installs of said programs?
  25. (was not expecting an image) Imageshack is totally blocked on my network. Which would explain the lack of anything embedded in the first post. completely my bad.
