I can think of: 1. SubInACL.exe (Microsoft) 2. SetACL.exe (Sourceforge) 3. Any form of scripting that removes: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Start Menu So what was the solution you actually used?

September Updates? =MS08-052 for IE6 +MS08-053 for "Windows Media Encoder 9 Series" (whatever that means) Also Tomcat76's list has not been updated since April . Yes, I know I can do it all myself - I just don't like re-inventing the wheel, that's all.

It would be helpful if the OP (Tomalak) or a MOD/ADMIN could change the second part of this thread title from "Version 7.1.6001.65" to "Version 7.2.6001.784" Please. __________ Edit: DONE! Thank you

Microsoft have changed their minds about WMP and XP SP3 again! For WMP11 there is no change from my last post. But for WMP9:

External Hard Drive 'inaccessible'
schloss replied to rd11runner's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
The part that worries me about data recovery for this drive is this part of the first post: That on its own could explain the two error messages in the screen shots posted above. Does anyone know how Maxtor implements this password protection? -- -
Because Microsoft only just realised that they made a mistake in their WU/MU system. KB936782 (MS07-047) has always been needed for WMP11 -- if you check the_guy's list you see it listed for XP SP2 AND XP SP3. On 12-August-2008 Microsoft realised that this update was still necessary but not being detected on SP3. Now it is! You can find this out for yourself if you follow the links that the_guy provides and read security bulletin MS07-047: Also, don't make the dangerous mistake (as many do) that MU/WU is infallible, or even anywhere near perfect!

Thanks for both replies. I didn't know there was even a Wikipedia list. I have a P1-133 and a P2-450 in the junk pile as well as a stack of 3Com NICs. Both computers hopelessy underpowered but nice and quiet because the CPU is passively cooled. Both also extremely heavy, incidentally, because of their very solid case + chassis. Another week-end project!

Excuse me jumping into the middle of a very interesting topic, but as regards this: what software do you use to turn this into a router?

Getting "crashed" hard drive to boot
schloss replied to buckdog05's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
I agree. Even Microsoft point out that the most common source of "Error Performing Inpage Operation" is physical problems with the disk. It's a very misleading message due to a quirk in the way Windows copies files of < 256kB. Recover whatever files you can, then junk the drive. -
If the Panasonic's SD formatter is freezing that means it is not accessing the hardware directly (or at anything anywhere even near directly) but is using Windows to do all the work. I was hoping for better things... At the moment, I don't know of a better formatter. The SD card association (for example) just has an older version of the Panasonic formatter. That's maybe because you have always been reading it through a USB attached card reader. If that is the case, then the SD/SDHC card will appear as just one more mass storage device. It also means that the hotfix may not solve your problem. Also I assumed (without asking) that you are still running XP SP-2. SP-3 already includes this hotfix. If all else fails, you may well have to send it back to Transcend, under their lifetime warranty. Here's the link: Transcend Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) System

spacesurfer, I agree it should be possible to salvage the card. Several points come to mind (you may know some of this already - but others might not) 1. SD cards are formatted FAT16, but SDHC cards are formatted FAT32. 2. Windows XP will need the KB934428 hotfix "Hotfix for Windows XP that adds support for SDHC cards that have a capacity of more than 4 GB" for SDHC cards. This is an unsupported hotfix, available by email. See KB934428 3. Formatted RAW is a polite way of saying no format at all. Your card should be recognised at the hardware level (in Disk Manager) but not by Explorer. 4. You can achieve RAW format by editing the SDHC card with a hex editor (zero the first sector of the physical drive). Don't try this if you have never done this before! 5a. You could try Panasonic's own formatter. See SD Memory Card Formatting Software 5b. If you do, read ALL the Panasonic page, including: which is near the bottom of the page.

All things are possible, but I doubt this will do what you intend. What actually do you want to achieve?

KB950759 (=MS08-031) is now obsolete, replaced by KB953838 (=MS08-045) Has anyone tested this to see if it has the same problem?
-
same - but it's run by a MSFT subsidiary. Your Product Key arrives by email, which only works for student addresses at recognized higher ed institutes, such as YYYYYY.edu in the USA or ZZZZZZ.ac.uk in the UK.

Thanks! WinDiff's not perfect but it's doing what I need.

I have a stack of XP install CDs. I want to find out what files are different on one of them. I could, I suppose, run CloneSpy against the CD and the SOURCE or SOURCESS folder tree of another build --- but that tells me the duplicates, not the differences. What I need seems to be the opposite of a duplicate file finder. Specifically, I need to find files with the same name but different contents, so some form of checksumming or file hashing has to be involved. A simple compare based on file names alone is not what I want. How do people round here handles this? Are there any well-known scripts or tools freely available? Sorry, if this has been dealt with elswhere some time ago, but this is a BIG forum and I am still finding my way around.

@ Tarun Thanks for the advice - I'll email the relevant forum admin. @Legolash2o OK, Kempelton (& ColorfulTabs & Hide MenuBar & NoScript) I could see. But what is removing "Mozilla Firefox" from the Title Bar?
-
If you mean Firefox, looks to me like Arvid Axelsson's Kempelton 3.0 (Kempelton 2.0 has a different Home icon) Firefox addon # is 5394, see here: Kempelton :: Firefox Add-ons Only been out about 5 weeks (2008-06-17), and already up to ver 3.0.5 (2008-07-04). I like it so much I've just installed it myself (needs Fx3 & Windows). BTW What's the solution if all you see is IPS Driver Error instead of a forum? (Happens elsewhere, but only temporarily)

That's an awful lot of questions, all very interesting, but not all relevant to HFSLIP. The short answer is that you are going to have to understand EXACTLY, the contents of the Registry at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Time Zones including figuring out why some entries have a TimeZone_nn entry (and some don't). (Please let ME know if you discover an answer to this) Can you add/delete/change name of time zones? Obviously the answer is YES, because that's what MSFT does in its updates. Can you alter the DST rules? Yes - but you will have to understand the contents of TZI and the related sub-key "Dynamic DST" for year-by-year variation. Jerold Schulman wrote this up in his JSI tip 0389, which should tell you most of what you need. Can you change the zone name "magically" depending on the year? NO - MSFT simply delete the old name. EDIT: Sorry - msfn's editor seems to be broken for me, can't post proper links, change fonts, formatting... GRRR! JSIINC is now closed, but JSI tip 0389 lives on at http://windowsitpro.com/article/articleid/...e-registry.html

That's because they are not just for XP, they are generic Windows. I have no idea why Tomcat76 lists something else for Win2k (which looks like it has been pulled from WU or WSUS).
-
OK, I've read the relevant pages and can see what the workaround is. Does anyone know: "Why this problem doesn't occur in normal situations"? [xpsp3 page] Not just idle curiosity, but want to know where the boundaries are.

Well, yes, time flies when your thread gets hijacked! If you are still looking for an Office patch list (which I agree is almost impossible to find) then Gary Busby maintains a spreadsheet over at Bullet in Blue (Here). Don't know of anything else for Office. Be warned --- his spreadsheet is in Office 2007 (XLSX) format.

Have you tried Log Off & Logon again? Quicker than a reboot.
