  1. Thx PROBLEMCHYLD!, it could a great idea for everyone
but I have already done my own upgrade.

BTW, in my registry I have those 2 keys:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\USB]
    "SilentInstall"="1"
    "SilentInstallNotify"="1"

They came from the nusb.inf of Nusb 3.6e:
    ; Silent Driver Install
    HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\USB,"SilentInstall",,"1"
    HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\USB,"SilentInstallNotify",,"1"

Using the ME SYSDM.CPL allows USB Storage Devices to be "autoinstalled" without prompting you to choose the driver and click though the dialog boxes, similar to Windows XP and up.
It does however have some unresolved bugs under 98SE. (See this thread where I tried, unsuccessfully, to fix it.

    Hi,
This has been solved since 'Unofficial Win98SE SP 3.22': http://www.htasoft.com/u98sesp/
when SYSDM.CPL was updated to version 4.90.0.3002:

  3. I have sent a feedback and request to FastStone.

BTW, on their homepage, it is mentioned: 'All products work on XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8.x and Windows 10'

but if you compare with the last snapshot from Wayback Machine (mars 30, 2015, with FastStone Image Viewer version 5.3) you get: 'All products work on Windows 98, ME, XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8'

so the bad news may be that they already know about that...

  4. I have already tried to disable KEx extensions (but not uninstall), or disable KernelEx for the Child processes, disable custom heap, as well as several other specific compatibilities,

    but it doesn't help :( .

BTW, once again it is the "support for unicode filenames throughout the software" that must have broken the 9x compatibility.

  5. No glitch here since the release (for what I've done).

You're right  Drugwash, there's a bug! (at least that one):

open a jpg file (for instance) and try to save it in another format (gif or png), you can't access the Options button!

    My bad.   :blushing:

I've try all possible settings of KEx specific compatibility mode, but it doesn't help  :(

I use the legacy KernelEx 4.5.2. That could be a good reason for me to try the jumper's 4.5.2015.9 update.

  6. it would be so convenient if good ol' regular Notepad could display newlines correctly when I double-click the file.

Choose a Notepad replacement like one of the above, rename it 'Notepad.exe' and drop it in place of the original. You will enjoy the 'good old Notepad' with so many more features ;)

metapad for this purpose is very light in one file, that means fast.

You could even use a reg patch to open any non-associated file in Notepad by default.

  7. Akelpad supports UTF-7, UTF-8, UTF-16 and UTF-32 as well as a large variety of ANSI encodings. Encoding options in the open/save dialog or by right-clicking the encoding field in the status bar.

    Indeed Akelpad is very impressive.

I will give it a further exploration.

  8. Hi Drugwash,

unless I make the whole dialog larger, together with resizing the controls, then recompiling the application.

Yes, it is what I did, but you don't need to recompile, everything can be done from inside Resource Hacker.

If you want check with my language Dll, you will see: Français (French) for Metapad 3.6

The translated "all-in-one" exe has been uploaded here: Metapad v 3.6 (Fr) (same result but with one file).

I've also noticed the UTF-8 issue which doesn't convert the text at all in/out. And it really bugs me out that Unicode suport is not full

You are right, I was notifying it in my previous post #6.

But still, metapad is a very nice program to use in Win9x, with a bunch of features for his light weight.

  9. FastStone Image Viewer goes in version 5.4

So far so good with default compatibility in KEx 4.5.2 [sorry, compatibility is broken with Win9x. See below.]

    Version 5.4 (July 31, 2015):

    • Added support for unicode filenames throughout the software. Now you can view and process images named in different types of characters (e.g. Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Japanese, Korean, Russian ...)
    • Added support for symbolic links
    • Improved Batch Convert, Crop Board and Draw Board
    • Many other improvements and bug fixes

    Details: http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm

    Download: http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDownload.htm

    Enjoy.

  10. metapad is awesome.

It has much more features than any one else of those lightweight notepad replacement!

BTW if you use the Dll language plugin, you need to indicate its complete path in metapad which changes constantly if you run metapad on an USB key.

So, I have translated directly the exe file with Resource Hacker (and a few more strings in an hexadecimal editor) to get metapad in my own language with only 1 file.

  11. No antivirus at all here for years and years, and never had any problem surfing. They are slowing too much on old PC.

(Only using ZA 5.5, proper configuration and passive protections like Hosts file, ActiveX killbits, ...)

I really wonder if it is possible to any current malware to recognize such legacy OS as Win9x and infect it.

  12. Resource Hacker version 4.0.0 just released (2 May 2015)!

I've unpacked the setup exe (it's an Inno setup)

and it is running just fine in Win 98 SE! :thumbup

The settings are written in a local file: RESHACKER.ini

    Changes List:
    What's new in 4.0.0 version:
Main changes include better displaying of images (esp. 32-bit images)
Now allows creating RES files from scratch (including template dialog, menu, string table, version and manifest resources)
    Numerous cosmetic improvements

    Enjoy!  :D

    EDIT: from the same source:

People who want to use a portable version of Resource Hacker, just install it using the setup file give below and after installation, copy "Resource Hacker" folder from "C:\Program Files" folder to any other desired location like another drive, USB stick, etc and you are ready to enjoy the portable version.

LATER EDIT: I was wrong.   :blushing:

Cursors are NOT displayed in this new version.

I've tried to set Kernel Ex 4.5.2 to a specific compatibility, but it doesn't help  .

  13. I certainly support jumper in the stance that releasing bugged versions and sources helps no one. He is under no obligation to spend his time on this project for you or anyone else - if it takes him some time to polish his current version and make the sources available, then that's his business and his alone.

+1 ... and BTW thx to the wonderful people helping here all those projects! :thumbup

GhostlyDeath if you actually want to help, stop with your requirement and legal threats, and politely offer your assistance, ...it won't harm you
