Alternative to Windows Sharing (with UNC path support)?
osRe replied to osRe's topic in Software Hangout
Fully integrated FTP might do, but just using FTP URLs, even where it works, is far from integrated. I'm after something that works, in terms of general interface, just like Microsoft Networking. Having \\server\path usable from any program for read or write. Maybe something based around NFS exists? FreeNFS looks like it might be in that direction, but it's too minimal. -
Can anyone suggest a low-level alternative to Windows Sharing? Something that works just the same, UNC paths and all, but does correctly access management, login, and logout. I'm fed up with the Windows default. It's always trouble and always cryptic. Alas, I cannot find any alternative and I suspect nothing of the sort exists.

Thanks. This is intended. Otherwise you can't Alt-Tab to a single window if the focus is elsewhere, like the desktop, taskbar, or windows without taskbar buttons. I might look into that later on.

windows 8 file explorer acting strange any ideas please
osRe replied to hydroplant's topic in Windows 8
What's wrong in the first case? The only thing that seems different is the navigation pane. -
And here's the fix. AltTab-no_desktop_no_thumbs_v2-win8_x86.zip

Try renaming alttab.dll in system32, then copying the replacement. And I'll have to have a direct look...
-
That's sad. I've never paid attention to the fact that since WinXP you need to modify system DLLs in order to load user styles/themes, simply because I never had to use them. But with Win8's unpleasant stock UI I am starting to notice it. Particularly with Win8's lack of color/font configuration, I really don't see the point of officially disallowing 3rd party skins. BTW, some skin elements can be adjusted from the registry, like window border thickness.

Here's the modified 32-bit DLL. Replace the original DLL and restart explorer.exe. Assuming the AltTab dialog shows, and assuming your Windows doesn't crash and burn , check if the desktop entry is gone, the thumbnails are gone, and if it shows up also when there's only 1 window. EDIT: Deleted buggy file.

If you upload the 32-bit AltTab.dll I could have a look. You'll have to test it and hope for the best, though. But I think it'll be fine.

Any idea how to disable in Windows Explorer windows, and the desktop, file hilighting on mouse hover? I'm talking about the hilighting that follows the mouse and happens in addition to the darker hilighting of the selection focus. Web searching suggests it can't be turned off, other than theme editing and using an empty bitmap. I'm still hoping there's a registry setting to control it. Any idea?

AltTab.dll modification v2: Previously, Alt-Tabbing when only a single program/window was open didn't do anything. This update shows the task switcher also in that case. Ideally I'd want the classic Windows behavior where Alt-Tabbing immediately switches to the single program without showing the task switcher. But that seems more complex to do, so it'll have to do for now. AltTab-no_desktop_no_thumbs_v2-win8_x64.zip

GL: Removing the reference to AltTab.dll shows the classic dialog which shows a few extra items for otherwise invisible Metro windows ("Start menu", "Snapped Desktop", "Immersive Background", sometimes more). I've further changed the DLL to both disabled the thumbnails and remove the desktop entry. For Win8 x64, AltTab.dll v6.2.9200.16384, 87,552 bytes: Offset Original bytes Modified bytes 0x4d45: 41 0f 95 c6 -> 45 30 f6 90 0x51a8: 48 -> c3 0x5c21: 0f 84 -> 90 e9 If anyone wants to try, see the attached modified DLL. Now, why does the icon of the first program annoyingly flicker once when opening the task switcher (original or modified)... AltTab-no_desktop_no_thumbs-win8_x64.zip

Well, Windows 8 has all the Metro baggage. Did you get the classic Alt-Tab window on Win 8 (Hold left Alt, press and release right Alt, hold Tab) without the extra Metro items? In the meantime I started digging into patching the DLL to get rid of these things. So far I got rid of the desktop item on the new task switcher. The thumbnails will take more work. If anyone wants to test the task switcher without the desktop item, on Win8 x64 modify AltTab.dll (v6.2.9200.16384, 87,552 bytes) as follows: offset 0x51A8: 48 -> C3
-
Thanks. But... these are exactly the things I tried. Alt+Tab Tuner is subjected to Windows limitations, so no 0 thumbnails size, and small sizes affect also icons size. AltTabSettings for classic mode shows extraneous items. VistaSwitcher is not dynamically sized. So it both takes up too much space, and with enough windows doesn't show them all without scrolling. If it weren't for these two issues I'd probably use it despite my preference for a compact icons-only style.

I've modified the Win8 Alt-Tab task switcher: * "Desktop" item removed. * No thumbnails. Utility for Window 8.1.2 64-bit (AltTab.dll v6.3.9600.17415, 118,272 bytes; after 11/2014's update KB3000850) The program doesn't modify any files, and includes configurability. Report if you find any problems. The following downloads are plain modified DLLs: Download for Windows 8.1.2 64-bit (AltTab.dll v6.3.9600.17415, 118,272 bytes) (Windows 8.1 after 11/2014's update KB3000850) Download for Windows 8.1.1 64-bit (AltTab.dll v6.3.9600.17031, 108,032 bytes) ("Windows 8.1 Update") Download for Windows 8.1 64-bit (AltTab.dll v6.3.9600.16384, 108,032 bytes) Download for Windows 8 64-bit (AltTab.dll v6.2.9200.16384, 87,552 bytes) Download for Windows 8 32-bit (AltTab.dll v6.2.9200.16384, 67,584 bytes) --- Original post: Is there any way to remove the thumbnails from the Windows Alt-Tab task switcher, and also get rid of the desktop entry? So far my searches yielded nothing. You can decrease the size of the thumbnails, but beyond a certain point also the program icons start to get smaller. 0 size isn't an option. Surprisingly there are just a few alternate Alt-Tabbers, and none of them have a look I like. Enabling the classic Windows switcher solves the thumbnails and desktop, but adds multiple extra entries, apparently Metro stuff, that should normally be invisible.

SATA to IDE adapters: which/what/why?
osRe replied to dencorso's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
I did have Win9x in mind, but I guess it's not Win9x-specific so Hardware is a better fit. I just rarely/never visit other subforums, so it hadn't even occurred to me to put it elsewhere. On the other hand, Win9x folk would know more about, and be interested in, old hardware. -
Welcome thisis. v10.63 works for me on 98SE. No KernelEx, no ME DLLs (that I'm aware of). It might need the latest IE6 updates for some DLLs, but that's just conjecture. The only oddity is that semi-transparent GUI elements look wrong, but it's not a big deal.

Perhaps the problem is somewhere else? I don't think any modern controller chip would do that in normal conditions. The best way might be to get an IDE controller card. -
I suppose, but that's too much trouble right now. Even though it might just compile without a hitch.
-
Interesting that the subsystem change helps only partially. It might be possible to replace to an older version of gstreamer, but on a quick search I couldn't find binaries. Can KernelEx report what functions of it were used at a given time? What does msimg32.dll help with, transparency? Is it a simple DLL replace or does it require KernelEx?
-
Not for me on v10.63. Are you using KernelEx?

Does anyone get Opera v10.6 to play <audio> tags correctly? I can see the player controls, but it doesn't play. I think it may be a problem with its playback libraries (gstreamer), as audio.canPlayType() returns empty for standard MIME types (like "audio/ogg" or "audio/wav") instead of "maybe" or "probably". Anyone get it to play audio?

Thanks, ATM does seem to give a few more details. But what would really be nice is being able to see thread start addresses: Any idea if ProcExp may depend for thread info on external libraries like dbghelp? Perhaps it's possible to upgrade that.
-
I found in the ProcExp forum a suggestion to remove HKCU\Software\Sysinternals\Process Explorer. Now I can run v11.11 (but not newer v11s I tried). But alas, no thread details! I guess it's NT only. :-/
-
I use WinTop for quickly seeing what takes up CPU. But both, including ProcExp v9, don't have certain features that are in ProcExp v10+. Might be. Although I didn't have these apps running, or anything much else really. I'll try that. For me it's thread details.
