  1. Hi, i have a friend's old laptop on which needs 98se (for reasons others than just hardware compatibility) and i actually want to be legal in obtaining it. Previously (2004), I was told by MS that non-royalty OEM copies could be sold with a piece of essential, non -peripheral hardware, as long as it came with a COA but i read here that this has changed, at least for XP and Vista, so that OEM's can only come with a PC, to which they are forever "married to." I called MS (1-800-RU-LEGIT) about it and the first attendant thought that this (new restriction) applied to any OS, so i asked someone in sales who said as far as he knew you could still buy an OEM with any kind of essential hardware, even an audio cable. He said they would have told them if (what the above link claims) was the case. I find no clarification for this online, and know that for many this is not a big deal, but i do want to be legal (and MS itself does itself no favors by not making making getting answers easier). And yes, i hope Linux becomes more of an option for the non-geek. Thanks for helpful advice or comments on the whole scheme
  2. Nothing for my model. Maybe a deal on actual sound cards would better. With this one you cannot record what comes thru the inboard sound without a line splitter.
  3. "Taskbar Shuffle it help keep the taskbar a little easier to organize (works with systray icons too)" Thanks. "the breadcrumb menu is better than the up button IMO." Some people like this better, but in some situations i cannot navigate up in a single pane windows, unless i use alt and up arrow. And i would rather just deal with single pane mode, for space purposes. No big deal.
  4. As one that both spends a lot of time behind a PC, and who likes to better things, I would like to start a thread of software and hardware improvements and ideas i would like to see implemented, or have found, and invite others to add to or comment on such. 1. Speech recognition (speech to text and commands) Vista (even HB which i have) provides this but it is very very basic. If you don't have Office i have found it only writes text to WordPad, and at that it leaves a lot to be desired. As my fingers increasingly are getting stiffer i myself would like to see this much improved. Vista recognition will also launch some apps, but nothing as varied and quick as it should be. In fact, i think the PC should be able to boot via voice command, which could allow extensive password restrictions. And rather than having to say Start and the name of a program, we should be able to set up any program we want to launch by voice command, as in “execute Firefox” (FF). 2. Remote telemetry and execution. PC makers could work with appliance and car makers to allow cheap transmitting of helpful data to your PC, such as electrical consumption, ambient temperature, etc. And laptops could have a program that allow basic analysis of engine performance. Etc. More devices could also be cheaply made to be receive commands from a PC (turn lights on, off etc.). 3. HotKeys: A built in hot key utility could really launch things quickly, and even shut down the PC. (I use the discontinued Copernic utility Winkey, and set it up so that the Windows key and F keys launch Internet apps, while Windows, shift and the appropriate key does other apps, while ctrl and a appropriate key does folders.) 4. Sys. Res. And activity. A single system tray utility that can show HD and CPU temps and activity, as well as specific Internet activity would be helpful. 5. The Task Bar. It would be helpful to able to be to choose different colors for each button (as in FF Colorful tabs ext.), as well as drag them to different positions, or Freeze one. And also to save different sessions. Also, be able to close one folder out of many in a grouped Task Bar button without it collapsing. 6. Saving web pages. As one who does much research, i like to be have the option of saving any web page with the URL embedded in the page, as the FF extension SaveWithUrl (http://nic-nac-project.de/~kaosmos/savewithurl-en.html) allows. In addition, rather than having to R. click + hit Properties in order to add a summary to such, this should be enabled in the initial saving of it. 7. Windows navigation. Rather than jumping though numerous hoops in oder to get someplace (like Advanced power management), perhaps a window could just list things. Or again, just speak it or hotkey it. Also, return the up arrow in Vista so that one can view folders in a single pane and navigate faster (i do know about Alt and the up arrow. But use the QTTabBar instead). Well, i am sure there is more than can be added, and that we are still in the “Model T” stage of computers and will see more improvements (as God yet gives grace).
  5. Hi all. Have been running Vista basic for about a year on a 39gb partition which increasingly keeps on getting smaller. I now have only approx. 7gb left. I actually resized it once but never thought i would need a 50gb partition as it looks like i may. I only really use it for Windows and Program files (not multimedia or documents) and empty Temp and recycle folders as needed, but Vista keeps growing. Today i found a neat freeware app, Drive Spacio (http://www.drivespacio.f-sw.com), and i find 2 folders in the Windows dir that are rather large. The 2 main folders are SoftwareDistribution and winsxs which are over 3gb ea., and have funky folder and files names like msil_accessibility_b03f5f7f11d50a3a_6.0.6001.18000_none_4daadb2992fccae3, or 849e9b1219110b6a8fe90f980141bb16. I see you have a guide on the winsxs folder, http://www.msfn.org/board/Guide-WinSxS-Dup...el-t109131.html, but i think i should just leave it alone. But what about SoftwareDistribution? The real space eater folder is called Download, and i do not even download to this drive. I cannot tell what they are (perhaps Win updates?) by the names. Thanks.
  6. Thanks for the update. i should go get it i suppose. All is running as before, and i can see not difference with sp1, and the slipstreamed vista w/sp1 just came in, thank God. I did write back to MS support and referenced this thread. And told them you could work for them.
  7. Thanks for the update. i should go get it i suppose. All is running as before, and i can see not difference with sp1, except that Windows movie maker is more flaky than before. Rather than just crashing when you load to large a file, it deletes all the clips you are working with (and saved as a project) when you import another video. Back to XP for this i guess. The slipstreamed vista w/sp1 just came in, thank God. I did write back to MS support and referenced this thread. And told you could work for them.
  8. I used 9x up until last year, and went diectrly to Vista hb, and ended up dual booting with XP home ( tweaked), on a Dell e520 PC (3.08 ghz cpu, 1.5gb ram). My old PC, with an AMD 650mhz, MSI6195 mobo, 320 ram, was used extensively on the web and otherwise for about 5 years, wearing out one PSU, and only got one virus all those years (thank God), so i was not looking for more security. And it is actually faster from full boot up to basic tasks like navigation and launching folders and small apps than either XP or Vista (in that order) is on the new PC , DSL surfing is about the same. And all are tweaked. I now use the old rig mainly as W/98se for a video player, running 4 pata HDs. But i do not miss the blue screens and freeze ups, and limits of 98se! I like the speed, software compatibility and navigation of XP home ed., but Vista HB is more stable, albeit slower, and has better power and disk management. As lack of system resources was a recurring problem for me under 9x, two freeware apps i found indispensable were Tclock http://homepage1.nifty.com/kazubon/tclock/ and FreeXPpro http://www.yourwaresolutions.com/software.html. The first can be programed to give not only time in seconds but memory load and cpu load and sys. resources. You need the MS resource meter installed. Under tclock properties i used (i think) ddd-M-d\\hh:mm:ss//R-C-S FreeXPpro can be programed to alert you when sys. res. get to a predefined level. Also for looks, Transtext makes the icons transparent" http://www.realityrift.com/applications/transtext/
  9. Thanks for what seems to be a confirmation. I will tell the church lady. She thinks she opened it easily before but i think she is mistaken. I said that us guys like to take things apart, so give me the screw driver! I have a good fat32 recovery software software on my old 98 PC, and i am hoping (praying) to be able to use a ext. enclosure on her drive to recover the mysteriously deleted OS enough to restore it. Maybe. Yes, this Micron is in better shape, but the one on ebay was only going for a dollar + 15.00 S+H, w/out a HD or OS.
  10. Hi, i volunteered to help fix an old but still usual laptop, a Micron NBKU360 TransPort Trek. I would like to remove the HD, but i cannot find a way to get to it. Unlike most laptops, there is no access panel, and the only tabs are for the battery and the DVD rom. Here are pics of what it looks like from a seller on ebay. If someone has ever opened one of these let me know. I want to take the screws out but the owner wants to avoid that. The software problem is that the entire Windows folder has been deleted, and she has lost her Windows 98se disk that she bought. I was able to save all the rest of the data to an external drive by using a copy of knoppix.
  11. Good to your concise closure. You are not the first person the Lord "spoke" to in their sleep! SP1 is running fine with no discernible difference. Still lags behind XP, but it has it's strengths. Hope this thread helps others. Maybe see you when i have another prob.
  12. I deleted and added the line to the stwrt.INI as instructed, and installed that driver and rebooted to no audio. I then installed SP1 in about 40 minutes and then installed a 6.10.0.5515 Sigmatel driver, and all works fine, praise the Lord! Windows Personalization also has a few other quirks, in which I was able to reproduce the no Segoeui font problem. If the Vista theme is selected, but you change colors and fonts of items under Colors and Appearance>Advanced, it will change the theme to "Modified theme" from Windows Vista (as listed under Themes), but many of of the new colors settings that are selected and applied do not show up (3d objects, Tool tips etc,, are still the default color). And upon reboot you lose a lot of fonts including Segoeui (they are not offered under Advanced). If i change back to Windows Vista theme and boot then i do not recover them. Only if i use my FontLoader can i get them back. An additional quirk is that if you change Items beyond 3d objects (like Active title bar etc.) and later change 3d objects then it will change some of the other Items to the color of the 3d object. When i first set up my OS preferences i notice this. No big deal but for Sp1 there apparently is a price to pay for changing the MS defaults. Well, this has actually been like a break for me, but now i need to get back to work. Thanks again for your help.
  13. Ps. I found that the problem was not with the Theme, as i changed it back and choose Comic sans for all the menus, etc. and the SP1 box and the I accept.. box is fine now Some how Windows system fonts were not loading. This was noticeable in Safe Mode as dialog box fonts, etc. were very small. I have to wait till i backup everything today and i will try to install the sp1 the way it i and see what happens
  14. CONGRATULATIONS!!! I have been to personalization many times before, as Windows forgets some previous color settings if you change one and i do customize. I changed the Desktop Theme back to Windows Vista, and under Advanced ... Segoe UI was not listed under the fonts for Menu, etc. In fact the font name was blank for these. Nor did the drop down menu list a lot of fonts that were in the Font folder. But i had a little freeware app called Font Loader i had gotten to install some extra fonts before that were not loading in my Word pro, and it puts a right click option on the Font folder to Load Fonts. I choose that and it warned me about loading system fonts, which of course i ignored, and it loaded about 145 as i recall. I went back to Personalization and there was Segoe UI. Went back to try the SP1 again and behold, now i can accept the Windows license and proceed! May God bless that diligent tech guy named erpdude. There is a place up in Richmond WA that could use you And i am going to tell them that. Or at least the support guy who came up empty (at least they should use something like Arial for dialog boxes). I had posted this problem on Dell forums and will post your solution and link here. Why that font and others were not loading i know not. I had that problem under W/9x and that is why i got a font loader. I appreciate freeware too. Thanks again for your over the top unsolicited degree of pursuit of this. 5 stars Resolution
  15. Right on. I can post back after Vista/Sp1 arrives. As for UAC, that has been turned off a long time ago (only got 1 virus in 7 years of extensive web use. Thank God) . Glad the Intel 945/965 workaround was a help Thanks again for your work on MSFN. If you need a job recommendation you should get plenty.
  16. OK, for review, there is no error message when i attempt to run SP1, but as i stated in my first post (pg. 1), " I have downloaded the stand alone SP1 file twice and from windows update once [twice], but when i run it the license dialog box comes up and the text goes past the margins (you cannot expand the box) and you cannot scroll sideways [only up and down], nor is there any "I Agree box" at the end. Changing Screen resolutions do not help. The text ends with "EULAID:VistaSP1_R1.0_Upgrade_RTL_en-US." NEXT is not available to click. (see image here] This happens even in Safe Mode, and with all audio drivers deleted (recycle bin) and disabled in the BIOS. [and changed display settings] And even after disconnecting the drive with XP on it (dual boot) [and the DVD external enclosure unplugged]. I cannot remove the sound card as it is part of the mobo.I have no other offending drivers according to the MS list, or strange hardware, and all other available needed updates from Dell or MS are installed." As for the Hardware lds, i simply copied and pasted it last time, and here it is again: HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7618&SUBSYS_102801DD&REV_1002 HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7618&SUBSYS_102801DD It lines up with yours FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7618&SUBSYS_102801DD There is no antivir running, and turning Windows firewall off makes no difference for SP1. And i tried it in safe made. And followed MS tech supports attempts (mem. diag., SFC, etc.). The best we could do was getting WU to list SP1 for my PC, but it will not install. The Display is the Intel G965 which is on Windows hit list for "Igdkmd32.sys – versions between and including driver 7.14.10.1322 and 7.14.10.1403z", but i updated it to version 7.14.10.1437 a while ago using a workaround. As for other hardware, I have sent you a message with pertinent specs. I downloaded and ran the KB950127 but the SP1 install does the same. Thanks again for your efforts, though it is not critical. I am content to wait till the Vista/Sp1 DVD gets here if you want. This could use a good clean install. And i also have XP (retail, a good buy, thank God). I plan to back up my whole C (Vista) drive (except the page and hiber.sys files) to an external drive first just in case i need things. I would direct the new install to there for drivers Another report someone got from MS support was "Action Plan: Kindly wait for further updates from microsoft which addresses the sigma audio driver compatibilty issues with service pack1."
  17. I had not noticed the correction you made to replace wrt_d8-4.ini from the AUD_allVista_5713.1 file with the one from a R173209 5713.1 file. So i found the R173209.exe file and used that WRT_D8-4.INI file to replaced the one in the v6.10.5713.1 WDM folder. The IDI drivers were uninstalled and i rebooted, and then i used DM to uninstall the generic Vista HD audio drivers (6.0.6000.16386) as directed, and w/out restarting the computer i ran run the setup.exe program again from the 5713.1 folder with the modified stwrt.ini file. After a reboot the driver version was 6.10.5713.1, but again no audio, and SP1 will not get past the license dialog box. The revised KB938371 was included in the latest WU updates today, and KB949939 says "This update does not apply to your system." I moved my audio back to ver. 6.10.0.5515. I think i just need to do a clean install with DVD SP1 slip streamed. Perhaps there is another driver that is not on the SP1 forbidden list.
  18. First I want to commend you again erpdude8 for your extra-ordinary efforts in seeking to get this resolved. But sadly, adding to the other 2 lines and running Setup as directed did not work. After a reboot the audio was no go, though the driver version was 6.10.5713.1, nor would SP1 install. And i am running 32 bit. I have also run check disk on my C drive as well. Strangely however, rather than reinstalling the old driver by having windows search for the best one out of the folder and subfolders, i just did a roll back and the driver version now is 6.0.6000.16386. Which doesn't work (i have not yet booted). But i think that is older than 6.10.0.5515, so i reinstalled that one. 19. Well, the install went well, though it took a few minutes, but after rebooting i have no audio and the SP1 file still will not run. The driver version became 6.10.5713.1. As said before, if it was only the Sigmatel, driver then i would think removing it and disabling it in the bios (as i have done before) would at least solve the SP1 install problem. I just let windows find another driver for this out of the many i have downloaded and tried. The driver version is now 6.10.0.5515 and it works. But thanks for your efforts. i will post back after i do the clean install with Vista SP1.
  20. OK, i have added the line HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7618&SUBSYS_102801DD=WRT_D8-4.INI to the STWRT.INI file, and have downloaded the R157052.EXE file R157052.exe. And copied the WRT_D8-4.INI file to the \AUD_allVista_5713.1_PV_IDT_v22_IAS\WDM\ folder. And finally, i will run the SETUP.EXE file from the \AUD_allVista_5713.1_PV_IDT_v22_IAS\ folder (not the WDM folder). All systems go for lift off.
  21. I have only 1.5GB ram on this Dell e520, and Vista basic lags. On boot up, while you get the Desktop in view after about 40 sec. (from when Vista is chosen as the OS), it take almost 2 minutes before you can open something like System Properties (Windows key and Pause/Break) without it hanging for almost 12 seconds. With XP this is much faster on the same PC. i actually went from a PC with a AMD 650mhz cpu and 320 ram running W/98se to this brand new PC, but found that the old PC is faster in booting to a fully usable state, and basic tasks like opening folders. (i can easily lists it's shortcomings too!) But in defense of Vista, it is more stable than XP, Power management works better, and Disk management enables you to do more than XP Home edition. It also has Speech to Text capability (not just the opposite), though it only seems to work in Wordpad, and also can enable you to navigate and open programs. This capability BTW, is still in it's infancy but should see more development as a viable feature. Or so i pray, as my fingers are stiffer as i get older.
  22. Your seeming supererogatorical efforts are commendable. In my case, i have driver version 6.10.0.5515, and the Hardware lds is HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7618&SUBSYS_102801DD&REV_1002 and HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7618&SUBSYS_102801DD You will have to tell me if that is "similar." Meanwhile, i have the Intel file you linked to opened with the STWRT.INI in my sights, awaiting your confirmation what variants of HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7618&SUBSYS_102801DD&REV_1002 and HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7618&SUBSYS_102801DD to add, rather than DEV_7680. However, the latest reply from the MS free SP1 support is "Dear Daniel, Thank you for your response. I have ordered a new Windows Vista Basic embedded with SP1 DVD for you free of charge. You should expect to receive the DVD within 7 to 15 business days." So praise the Lord . This is what i inquired about, as i almost did a clean install of Vista but sensed i should hold back. I only have the Dell restore type DVD for Vista, so i am not sure if i could've made a slipstreamed Vista/SP1 DVD with it. Yet i am not sure that this combo coming will not have any problems, but i think it will install. If i find a usable sound card sometimes that fits this Dell i will likely install that. The integrated Sigmatel does not record audio from the sound card (i bought a splitter to do so).
  23. "Perhaps PeaceByJesus and lexonex may want to try this out . Just make sure to get the "Hardware ID" info of the Sigmatel/IDT Audio Device from either Device Manager or the DirectX Diagnostic Tool [DXDIAG.EXE] first, then add the specific hardware ID into the STWRT*.INI files from the 5713.x driver packages." Sorry to have missed 4 days, as i was doing a DVD project under XP with software (Roxio 8) that cannot run under Vista. Back to SP1, i did try a driver for Gateway recommended on Dell forums (where i was searching also), but it would not install on this PC. Maybe I could try the above procedure, but having tried uninstalling the offending Sigmatel driver on my E20, and disabling it in the bios (plus running in safe mode, or with basic services, and following the instructions from the free* MS Sp1 support), i am skeptical that altering the STWRT*.INI procedure would have any positive effect in my case. For once the offending driver is uninstalled and then disabled in the Bios, i would think that there should not be any audio driver listed that Sp1 objects to(?) I will be back under Vista tomorrow and see what it says in such a case. But good work Erpdudue8! Maybe you should work for Dell support. The latest MS reply (since 3-22) is "Hi Daniel, Thank you for your reply. From your description, I understand that you would like to order a DVD for Windows Vista Service Pack1. If I have misunderstood your concern, please do not hesitate to let me know. I understand the inconvenience you have experienced. Please be assured that I will do my best to help you. If you have a North American address, please collect the following information for me. I will submit an order for you promptly. It is free of charge." I clarified that this would be of no value as i already have downlaoded the file twice, and ran it from WU as well, and thus the only DVD that i would request is Vista with SP1. If they will not, i may try making one, if it can be done with the Dell restore DVD.
  24. I found this info here: "Windows XP Service Pack 3 Preview actually contains security updates and hotfixes issued by Microsoft Corp. up to April 2nd, 2006; 248 files in total Each hotfix needs to be installed manually. when downloading, you may also get additional applications bundled with the software's installer file. These third party application may represent a hazard for your computer, so you will need to carefully read the installation notes. Attention: Internet Explorer 7 is not included in the package." http://www.soft32.com/download_123572.html Here is the RC: http://www.tweakxp.com/Article39214.aspx I like XP myself better than VISTA which is noticeably slower, dual booting with XP on this Dell E520, 1.5ghz cpu, 1.5 Ggb ram, and my Win 98 on a 650mhx cpu w/ 320mb ram boots and opens folders faster than it. But i do not miss the 9x freeze ups!
