  1. Just a small status update I've finally finished nLiting the XP so it would run at a reasonable speed on the laptop. Took a while getting everything right and perfect Also, tested plop on the laptop and it can boot off my backup USB boot originally meant for my computer meaning that it does work fine for me. Now, all I need to do is to do some final testing on the nLited XP and then start making it boot from a USB instead of a virtual CD on VMWare.
  2. Ok, I'll try plop and USB Driver Disk (Ver 1.9) this weekend, just need to find a USB drive first... And rechecked the model (Acer Extensa 710DX not 760DX). So, basically I use a floppy to boot plop or DOS with USB drivers and then it boots off a USB? And for Windows, I follow http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=16713 and make some minor mods to the instructions. If all goes well, what lightweight software would go well with this laptop? (For doing basic tasks, better lightweight alternative to ones that are listed are appreciated) Email: Stickies/Note Taking/To Do List: Music Player: Musikcube (+ plugins) Chat: Windows Live Messenger Browser: Opera Security: HOSTS file, Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware PDF: Sumatra PDF, PrimoPDF Image Viewer: Irfanview Word Processor: Atlantis Others: 7z, Teracopy Integrated using nLite: Xable's SP3 pack, Kel's runtimes, Kel's CPL Bonus, DirectX, .NET Framework, CCleaner, Notepad2. Hashtab Thanks for the suggestions so far
  3. ...::: Thank you, thank you, though my voice doesn't reach you... Forever watching over you. :::...

  4. Hello, I run a computer club in which me and some of my friends tinker around with old hardware, build old systems from scratch, install old operating systems etc... However, I seem to come across this inconvenience - some of the systems do not have drivers for sound, video etc... Since it is very hard to about impossible to deduce and find every driver for each hardware that we have, I decided to get a bunch of Driverpacks for 9X (from this forum). The problem is that if I burn these driverpacks to a CD (obviously separate from the installation disks) can Windows deduce what hardware it is and automatically install the correct driver? Because last time I remember, I had to manually go through each folder and subfolder and try every single .inf file. I personally wouldn't want to handle 10 people asking for help because they do not have the drivers for some hardware (and multiply it by how much hardware needs drivers). Is there a better way to do this? Thanks in advance for any suggestions
  5. Hello, I got an really old laptop (about 12 years, Acer Extensa 760DX from memory) that I'd like to install some kind of OS, preferably XP for basic IM (with Windows Live Messenger), email, a music player, firewall, stickies note program of some kind and some basic word processing. The operating system MUST have support for a D-Link GWA-110 USB wireless adapter. Specs: Pentium I with MMX 333MHz, 128MB Ram (upgraded from 64MB), 40gb HDD (upgraded from 4gb), 4MB graphics, 1 USB port, LAN port, floppy drive, Maestro sound. Anyway, the CD drive does not recognize any disc except the original recovery disk containing Windows 95a (with USB support, no mass-storage drivers though), and my Windows ME disc (well, not anymore). Being an old laptop, it will most likely no have any USB boot support. From a long while ago, Windows ME currently is installed on the laptop with at least one failed attempt of a XP installation. Thanks in advance for suggestions and help how I can get a decent OS with wireless support installed.
  6. You can also get PrimoPDF http://www.primopdf.com/ It's also free like the Microsoft Office Save as PDF/XPS and can also convert anything that prints into a PDF file.
  7. Ok, I'll make the traces tonight but I'll have to wait till the next week till I can upload it (slow internet atm). Disabled the Server service and most of the services which depend on it. Doesn't seem to be that much faster.
  8. True it is the same OS name but the underlying architecture has some differences. Office XP was made at a time when 64 bit processors are not popular and hence, it was not considered by Microsoft. It may work, it might not. Outlook XP does seem to cause problems in Vista 64bit (just tried it on a virtual machine). On another note, there is no 64bit version of Microsoft Office (yet) but Office 2003 (maybe a few errors) or 2007 should work fine. You can either: - Try using compatibility modes to see if it would run better. - Buy a new version of Office - Use a virtual machine (running XP) to run Office XP
  9. It is slightly faster, but dtill takes about 5 minutes to get to my desktop. The ScRegSetValueExW call failed for Type with the following error: Access is denied. The following service is taking more than 4 minutes to start and may have stopped responding: Server Contact your system administrator or service vendor for approximate startup times for this service. If you think this service might be slowing system response or logon time, talk to your system administrator about whether the service should be disabled until the problem is identified. You may have to restart the computer in safe mode before you can disable the service. The Diskeeper service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort4.
  10. Ok, it was there and I deleted it.
  11. idstore.sst cannot be found anywhere on my computer. It is not in the %appdata%\peernetworking folder There isn't any folder called peernetworking anyway.
  12. I turned on my computer again after a few hours and only these came up in Event Viewer: That Server error never came out before, and it looks like it's not going to appear soon.
  13. Finally, it rebooted six times. The last few reboots took about a minute which is good. But when I started my computer this morning, it took nine minutes. Event Log: Server The following service is taking more than 4 minutes to start and may have stopped responding: Server Contact your system administrator or service vendor for approximate startup times for this service. If you think this service might be slowing system response or logon time, talk to your system administrator about whether the service should be disabled until the problem is identified. You may have to restart the computer in safe mode before you can disable the service.
  14. Right now, it's says "Preparing system" after it rebooted twice. And it's not doing much ><. I'll probably wait an hr to see what happens to it.
  15. If I disable the Adobe CS4 Service Manager + Adobe Version Cue CS4 will it affect the functionality of these programs? Quicktime and iTunes were only startup boosters to they run faster on launch, so I disabled them. I already disabled GoogleCrashHandler.exe, AtBroker.exe, GoogleUpdate.exe, MDGetStarted.exe, M4PRODUP.EXE, GrooveMonitor.exe (from MS Office 2007 - Groove?), QTTask.exe, Java Updater I do use an iPod - so should I disable Apple Mobile Device (AppleMobileDeviceService.exe), Bonjour Service (mDNSResponder.exe), iPod Service (iPodService.exe)? I've already disabled BlackfishSQL - SQL server from codegear (BSQLServer.exe -S=BlackfishSQL ), gupdate (GoogleUpdate.exe ), Nero BackItUp Scheduler 4.0 WLIDSVC.EXE is the Windows Live Programs service isn't it? Will it make Windows Live programs not work if I disable it? Also, I've tried booting into Safe Mode. Unfortunately, when I type in my password (it is correct - tried like 5 times), it just restarts the computer after showing a message that the password is incorrect. And, no - I've not run the optimization. Don't I need to finish enable/disabling services before I do that? Or can I just do it?
  16. Right now, I'm not sure what I really need and which I don't. I've already disabled some that I know I do not need. ESET Smart Security, HD Audio Control Panel, Realtek Voice Manager, Mediafour MacDrive, AnyDVD, DeskSpace, NetWorx, Adobe CS4 Service Manager, Adobe Version Cue CS4, Java ™ Platform SE U15, VMWare Workstation, QuickTime, iTunes, FileBox eXtender, Virtual CloneDrive Drivers I think: ESET Smart Security, HD Audio Control Panel, Realtek Voice Manager, Mediafour MacDrive, AnyDVD, Virtual CloneDrive Desktop functionality: DeskSpace (different desktop spaces), NetWorx (monitors how much internet I have used), FileBox eXtender (pin to top functionality) No idea: Adobe CS4 Service Manager, Adobe Version Cue CS4, Java ™ Platform SE U15, VMWare Workstation, QuickTime, iTunes
  17. In the Startup tab in msconfig there are: ESET Smart Security, HD Audio Control Panel, Realtek Voice Manager, Mediafour MacDrive, AnyDVD, DeskSpace, NetWorx, Adobe CS4 Service Manager, Adobe Version Cue CS4, Java Platform SE U15, VMWare Workstation, QuickTime, iTunes, PowerMenu, FileBox eXtender, Virtual CloneDrive
  18. Is it possible to run xbootmgr -trace boot -noPrepReboot -traceFlags BASE+CSWITCH+DRIVERS+POWER -resultPath C:\TEMP but when it restarts turn the computer off and then try again the following morning? It is usually with a cold boot that the slow startup happens. The boot process is much faster somehow when I restart instead of shutting down and pressing the power button again. Also, what paging size should I use, in case the error message in post #4 appears again? (When I made another one that message appeared. Don't know why the the one posted worked but now it won't work)
  19. This morning when I started my computer, it took a total of 12 minutes starting from the 'Starting Windows'. However, when I ran the boot trace which restarts my computer, it only took about 4 minutes. I've uploaded the file to Mediafire - boottrace.rar - MD5: DB33E75DA8A1E6E9C7DD330E883033FB - 71.1MB Link: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?flwjnnnhjge It contains: boot_BASE+CSWITCH+DRIVERS+POWER_1.cab boot_BASE+CSWITCH+DRIVERS+POWER_1.etl summary.xml xbootmgr.log
  20. The system now seems to be starting faster since increasing the pagefile size. Usually, I start the computer and after eating breakfast it still hasn't loaded but now... it does. Still done the trace though. Used: xbootmgr -trace boot -traceFlags BASE+CSWITCH+DRIVERS+POWER -resultPath C:\TEMP After the reboot: xperf -i "C:\TEMP\boot_BASE+CSWITCH+DRIVERS+POWER_1.etl" -o "C:\TEMP\summary.xml" -a It gave me: summary.xml (121KB) Attached is the summary.xml file. MD5: 4D8F7CDB25951B3F4009A8F7E6DDC1F0 summary.xml
  21. Right now, my paging file size is 4094MB which was automatically set by Windows. I've now set the initial size to 6141MB and the maximum size to 12282MB EDIT: Ok, that didn't work. Crashed my system. Fortunately I made a system restore before attempting it.
  22. I got the Windows 7 SDK and installed "Install Windows Performance Tool Kit (x64)" After that, I have tried: xbootmgr -trace boot -noPrepReboot -traceFlags BASE+CSWITCH+DRIVERS+POWER -resultPath C:\TEMP from the link you gave me. When I used it however it said: Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Performance Analyzer Version 4.6.7231 (C) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. '-noPrepReboot': This option can only be used with shutdown and rebootCycle traces. See 'xbootmgr.exe -help' for more information. So I typed the command without the -noPrepReboot option. And then it rebooted my system and saved three files in C:\TEMP boot_BASE+CSWITCH+DRIVERS+POWER_1.cab boot_BASE+CSWITCH+DRIVERS+POWER_1.etl xbootmgr.log After that, I typed this in Command Prompt (Run as Administrator) xperf -i "C:\TEMP\boot_BASE+CSWITCH+DRIVERS+POWER_1.etl" -o "C:\TEMP\summary.xml" -a boot It said: Warning: Applying restriction of access for trace processing 31987 Events were lost in trace. Data may be unreliable. This is usually caused by insufficient disk bandwidth for ETW logging. Please try increasing the minimm and maximum number of buffers and/or the buffer size. Doubling these values would be a good first attempt. Please note, though, that this action increases the amount of memory reserved for ETW buffers, increasing memory pressure on your scenario. See "xperf -help start" for the associated command line options. Not sure what that meant. Also, a summary.xml did come up in C:\TEMP but it is 0kb meaning that there's probably nothing inside.
  23. Hello. This problem really makes me irritated. My Windows 7 takes like ages. Simply ages to get to the desktop. Starting the computer is fine. Starting Windows takes about 5 seconds. But after I type my password, the Aero Busy cursor with Welcome just keeps on spinning for ages. The computer is responding as Num Lock, Caps Lock, Scroll Lock lights an be turned on and off. After the Welcome screen however, everything is fast and zippy Computer Specs: Gigabyte ga-ep45-ds3 Motherboard Intel Core 2 Quad 2.33GHz 4GB RAM DDR2 667MHz nVidia GeForce 9800GT 512MB Graphics Card 640GB Seagate 7200RPM SATA2 HDD Windows 7 RC x64 Ultimate (Build 7100) So, it is very unlikely that it is the hardware. Also, I scan my system with ESET and MBAM everyday, so it is also unlikely that it is a virus infection. 24. Took me a while to actually have enough time to tinker around with it... And yes, thanks Yzöwl and g-force it works now
