Ohh, chee thanks.. atleast someone replied i thought i was just talking to myself, in this forum ! n'ways thanks for ur suggestions, i'll try to look it up. but i think the settings that i use are the default settings enabled with xp.. Still i'll try to find if i can rectify this prob.. n'ways this problem has already forced me to think alternative solutions.. so by the time i even come across a page scratching the surface of this problem, i've been already shifted to one of the best os'es out there... LINUX (gentoo) and i heard that reiserfs4 is much much better than any other fs out there in the wild.. so, the adventure begins Bye, Jazz

ok, heres the situation,. when i transfer big 700mb files from one partition to another, it takes 3 minutes... But if i start the file copy process and immediately kill the explorer.exe process, the copy takies only 18-20 seconds ! can someone tell me why is this happening and how do i overcome this problem Another thing to take notice is that, when i keep the explorer.exe and then start the copy phase with cmd.exe, it takes the same 3 min's to transfer.. But then again if i kill the cmd.exe it completes in 18-20 seconds.. Why are the explorer.exe and cmd.exe cause of slow transfer speeds in Windows XP ??? i've checked this with windows 2003 and it works perfectly there, i.e takes only 18-20 seconds to copy the file.. I've also tried reformatting the primary os, install xp without sp1, with sp1 and with sp2.. still the same thing... slow transfers till i kill the explorer.exe process I bet thsi is the most challengin question, u've heard.. and me too.. so lets see if we can come around this problem together.. I bet many out there too are experiencing very slow transfer speeds from their hdd's and they dont even know this cuz they never might have thought that explorer.exe is the root cause of this evil !! Best use of High capacity Raid/0 Config !
Jazz replied to Jazz's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
EEHU ! well ya i know that, thats why i'm using only a part of both the drives for the raid setup and will have individual seperate normal partitions on both the drives, to suit my needs, like misc data backup or for something else, that i dont wanna put on the raid... I've provided the disk setup, not in graph form but i think it serves the purpose.. I hope that helps.. Bye, Jazz -
Best use of High capacity Raid/0 Config !
Jazz replied to Jazz's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
no ideas ?, guys i need to take a decision based on ur inputs help me please... -
Hi,. well first for my pc specs and config.. P4 2.4 (533), 512 DDR (333), Intel i845-GEBV2 Mobo. 120Gb (7200rpm 2mb Cache) Seagate Hdd, 52x32x52x16 Combo Liteon Now for the real stuff.. ok, now all i need is the maxium I/O performance.. (cost effective solution ofcourse) So, i decide to go in for Raid/0 Config Software based... I plan to get another Seagate 200Gb (7200 8mb Cache) hdd and plan to use that for my primary drive.. Now first question that comes to my mind is that how am i gonna utilise all that space.. it's kinda true that a whole bunch of GB look very less in a matter of months, so i know i wont be regretting this decision any time soon.. Still partitioning and configuring this setup for the optimal Raid/0 is a challenge... consedring the fact that i plan to install atleast 4 different os'es including Linux. So, i'v kinda outlined a sample config of my partitioning structure and how i plan to use it.. It would be great if anyone could suggest me a better use of my space, or my partitions, to get the optimal performance outta my setup.. Ok some doubts regarding this idea are that as the drives have different cache size how bad will this hit the performance of the setup ? and will the faster drive wait a long time for the slower drive to complete the i/o operation ?? Also, how if i just sold the 120gig hdd and got me teh 200 gig, will the performance be faster this way ? Bye, Jazz PS:- please respond to this as i will be making my decision on your opinions....

Hmm, if u're goin in for a lcd then i dunno, but for crt's try to get the samsung NF series monitor, specially the 959NF 19" crt, its got aperture grille technology, sony triniton picture tubes and whoo, it give u a resolution of 1600x1200 @ 85 HZ Now thats something... eh, and ohh boy they look so sleek and sexy, i have one myself.. i absolutely love em.. its 0.2mm dot pitch, so its kinda sharp and the colours are kool Else, go for the boring mitsubishi.. they're good to, but too bulky,. Bye, Jazz

hmm ok first u see that in the ends of the cable... One pin slot must be closed.. check the cable area which u insert to your hdd connector... One pin should be blocked, if u see all the 40 holes open , then its not a ata-100 cable, if not then buy a new ata-100 cable.. Ok if thats not the case, then remove any other device connected to the same channel, and goto bios and set the dma mode to either auto or udma 5, OK.. Other wise if even thats not the case then set the dma mode to 5 via ur application accelerator interface... I think then u should have greately improved your hdd speed... Let me know if this helps, mean time i try to figure out wass goin on with my hdd.. Bye, Jazz

****... i dont believe seagate is that bad, cuz i know for sure that previously i had good transfer speeds... i dint it realise it much over a extended period, until recently i had to ONLY move a 700 mb avi to another partiton, and OH boy i had to wait 3 min's !! that really p***ed me off, and i thought that my hdd had gone bust.. So to reconfirm i booted into linux and tried copying the same file to the same location !! whoaaa, what do i see.. it takes only 35-39 secs... Ok, thats why i'm more p***ed.. cuz i definately know its something to do with my softwares, drivers or the os itself and nothing to do with a brand.. Ohh infact the new seagate 7200.7 200Gb 8mb cache has selected as the best buy for price and performance at toms hardware.... so that proves it all, they claim it has a transfer rate of 64 mb/s and its even higher than the WD 10k rpm drive HOWZZ that !! I'm planning to get that drive soon... its even got a 100gb per platter density, so its awesome... http://www6.tomshardware.com/storage/20040209/index.html check that out... Bye, Jazz OK now please suggest me something, its the os i know for sure...

Dunno, i gave both the guys my files.. but nobody uploaded it Lets see.... Bye. Jazz

Jazz meets jJazz Ok well first there is no english, second the translation dosent work.. Bye, Jazz

duh, how have u connected all that ? pls specify the ide configuration.. i too have a 2.4 ghz, but i dont think that makes a hell lotta difference, as the dma is supposed to get past that... There has to be something wrong witm my config... maybe its the 2mb cache drives ? hey but the thing is that i need help ! my hdd transfers are very very slow now, pls suggest something.. Bye, Jazz

8 seconds !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! are u kiddin me !! OMG OMFG OMDFG !!!! jees.. u just made me feel like a ***in PIG ! i'm disgraced of myself.. i'm gonna suicide the minitue i turn 99yrs ! Ok lets get down to buisness... how much do u want for that $$$ Ok ok ok, just kidding.. man look what have u done to me !! phew.. hmm,... well tell me the transfer rates from the same hdd to the same hdd in the same channel ! Lets see how much do u get it then eh ! Bye, Jazz

ohh, thank gosh u're here eXtreme... i really needed some pro advice... Ok the thing is that if there was any fragmenation in the hdd, its pretty obvious that Linux and windows wud have to deal with it in the same way, cuz as i dont have any linux installed on my hdd, instead i had booted it from my cdrom, that makes the things more complicated... as i have my cdrom and hdd on the same cable, hence booting linux from the rom and copying the files, should instead be much slower in linux.. but instead the results are even more faster than having only my hdd on the data cable in windows i'm totally confused ! i bet it has to do something with the hotfixes, or the chipset inf utility or the intel application accelerator.. I'm very sure that most of the guys here have a intel chipset board, and obviously they all have the latest chipset inf's installed 5.1.1.xxxx and also they wud be using the intel application accelarator 2.3 , so why sint it affecting them ?? or is it that they have been affected and they are'nt aware of it ??? ok, i got 7200 rpm drive and it takes ~3 mins to copy one 700 mb file from any partition to any partition.. How much time does it take for you ?? Please help me out with this, as my primary os is windows and i dont want to live in an inferior surroundings BYe, Jazz

ok well u need to give some more info... like Hdd Model no: Os used : and have u connected the cd rom and hdd to the same channel ? are u using the 80 conductor cable ? Which chipset are u using, (intel, via, sis etc..), and is the dma enabled ? etc etc... People, pls tell me wass goin on ! i'm goin crazzy... has anyone else experienced this ?? i'm on winxp with all the hotfixes installed (sp1).. the same drive was working fine a few months ago, until i started really slow disk transfer rates and then i decided to investigate... The worst part that its working absolutely perfect in linux... Bye, Jazz

Hmm for the intro fellas, i have a seagate 120gig 7200.7 7200rpm hdd, 2mb cache.. ideally it should transfer at very high speeds... liek for eg to move or copy a 700 mb iso from one partition to another , ideally it shouldnt take more than 40 secs... BUT, in windows it takes more than 2 minutes... i'm using intel application accelerator and the ide controller drivers are the latest... so wass happening ??, ok i've been a long lost linux user, so just to try my luck i tried booting with knoppix, set up my dma, read ahead thingy's etc etc and voila... it takes 39secs to do the same task !!! why ??? for some insight, i have the cdrom and the hdd on the same cable... but i also removed the cdrom completely and rechecked... still the same problems ! i was almost gonna buy a new hdd just cuz of this u know.. this is getting really annoying, and i have a very serious belief that some of the new hotfix is causing this silly stupid bug... but i dunno for sure.. Please help me. !! Bye, Jazz ps:- oo btw i'm using linux now and ohh boy it feels wonderful, i'm getting a strong urge to shift back to linux

i think that a centrino 1.5 performs as good as the p4 2.8, as it's got 1mb cache, hmm, to be able to play a game make sure that u have atleast 128 vram and atleast more than 256 ram like 384 maybe ?? that shud do the trick, then disable all the services and s*** , games can be a nightmare to play even on a very good spec on which the os and hardware is not configured properly... n'ways how much does that lappy cost ?? Bye, Jazz
-
@nuhi.. hehhehehe, ok that was funny.. hmm, regarding the 0.94 i dint see it uploaded it yet..and where are the presets ?? how do u use them.. i cant see any opion to select or enable any presets.. Pls shed some light

lol, cuz he just counted his windows and docs folder not program files Lol..

man it seemed as if u were speaking for me well i've been using opera 7.5 and its a big improvement in the gui as well as the performance, and i've never come across any javascript incompatibilities.. so i dunno.. Also, if suppose'dly the app crashes and u had to restart or whatever.. on the next run opera gives u the option of opening the exat same set of sites that were opened while the app crashe... i reall love this feature and cant live without that... It also has a very good download manager, so no whining on that... so opera for me.. Bye, Jazz
-
hmmm... i thought it scanned all incoming traffic, like java scriots etc etc everythign.. looks like thats pretty useless anyways Well i still are'nt sure if i'll make the switch, cuz in the real world.. kaspersky has detected a backdoor that even nod32 cant detect.. for eg.. goto h**p://cracks.lomalka.ru and download any crazor u'll get a file named awi.exe i BET u scan it thru any other av it wuldnt even show up and if u start it it'll still in ur processes list doin somethin fishy... But if u scan it with kaspersky it'll immediately warn and delete that file, saying its a backdoor app... any comments on this ?? if someone cud prove me wrong, (i'll really be happy) then i can happily shift to nod32, as i always wanted to but its just the sense of always being protected that i dont wanna compromise Bye, Jazz

only remove the components that u're sure of that u wouldnt need anymore... i think its kinda safe to remove the drivers as they come with ever piece of hardware anyways... But be careful while removing system components as i dont think they can be bought back to life in the same install..... @nuhi.. hmm for a suggestion that's been luring me for a while.. i think u should make some option, some extra app or a different section in the nLite itself that allows us to REINSTALL the apps that we had previously deleted from the source.... Like i mean, suppouse we removed OE from our install, then we install.. now if someday i need OE back ! i cant (pls dont mention install IE 6 again, say its something that only installs with xp, eg systemrestore etc) SOO, now what wud be the ideal scenario is that i fire nLite again , goto that diff section and select to reinstall OE, now what nLite does is it asks me for the UNMODIFIED xp cd, and it restores the files from it, and voila ! i got my OE back.. yeehaaa : get it ?? something like this... i know this wont be possible for all the removed components, but still even a few can be bought back.. it'd be something great... What say everyone ??? Atleast its worth a try i say, cuz xplite have something like this already.. i know as theirs is a post install method it's not that difficult for them, but wooa, look who we got on our side ?? NUHI NUHI Lets see what everyone gotta say abt this.. BYe, Jazz

Hmm that means that if we cant get the imon working in nod32 then the exploits coming from the net are a big threat ?? Cuz in kaspersky it has a very very good detection rate and catches almost all the malicious code right in the browers cache folder itself (i use opera).. Also i must admit that the interface of the new kaspersky 5 has greately improved.. but i got one little problem, thats that i cant update the defs directly from the updater and that i need the extended databases from the updater_x folder... any idea ? Cuz then it'll be able to catch even trojans, spyware etc etc... awesome package.. Bye, Jazz
-
Hey ppl, how do u update the defs ?? just curious... if u cant answer the question here pls pm me.. and also i cant get the imon working for me.. dunnow why when ever i turn it on it interferes with my internet connection, my net completely dies and i'm unabale to connect anything online... Anyideas ? i know that it plays at the winsocks level, is it that i have to enable any service for it to get working or what ?? Byr, Jazz
