  1. Here is mine (Example is in bold) [boot loader] timeout=5 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows XP Pro" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /noguiboot Dumb question, Have you tried to set your default section up as default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS instead to boot to MCE? and is MCE actually on your primary drive in the second partition?
  2. I take a 7 in 1 cd with XP Home/Pro/Corp/MCE , 2000, and 98 (which I googled to find for downloading) on it when I go to visit customers site as some seem to never know what flavour of windows they are running. I select the appropriate version and then enter their code in. I have done this on Dell, Gateway, HP, Compaq, Emachine, and custom builtcomputers and without too much difficulty aside from some driver issues once the basic install was done. Also can be used to do recovery or resetting admin passwords when all seem to be locked out of loggin onto their accounts. Hope that can help you
  3. Actually, in the msdn and tech sites, they do talk about that. I'll have to dig thru my old stuff, but one of the powertoys provided by MS lets you setup a screen to do that as long as you have windows logo and say something like "Powered by Windows". You would create a new image, rename logo.sys to something like oldlogo.sys and substitute your image in its place (of course using the name of logo.sys ) Please double check that as this is what we use to do on older windows and I have not had as much call to do that in these times. Conversley, I have not tried this, if you put "/NOGUIBOOT" in the boot.ini file such as multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Embedded" /NOGUIBOOT might work for now. here is where i got some info from MSDN site on embedded XP alot of their tricks also works for other flavored XP's. Else you can do like this article Customizing boot splash Whatever you do Have tons of Fun with it
  4. Actually that is wrong about the domain. I prefer XP MCE and have 2 of them hooked up to log on to different domains. Unfortunately, my wife steals both laptops and takes them to her work and I get stuck working on the old non-portable tower. One of these days I will get one of those finger scanners and lock out a laptop for me to play with.
  5. I too am having that problem. Instead of modify grub I have been trying through the Boot.ini. I can get it to install, but on reboot I just get a black screen. When I have more time, I am going to try to hide the other partitions and see if that will work. If not, I will have to dig thru my old hard drives for an old boot.ini and ntdetect.com files from a win2k install that was similarly setup. I am able to get linux installed without grub by using boot.ini (my brother-in-law showed me that a couple of years ago) after linux has been installed. But my memory is real hazy on where I have to have the 1's and 0's. [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WIN98="Windows 98" multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WIN2K="Microsoft Windows 2000" /fastdetect I know the partion will be 1, 2, or 3 depending on how many partiotions you have on 1 drive. But I keep forgetting if it is disk(X) or rdisk (X) that has to be changed on a slave on the primary controller and which one has to be changed on a secondary controller. Time for playing is real limited for me , hope this can help you.
  6. Have you looked at programs such as dvdshrink you could do a search on dvd compression tools at google like below. google search on dvd compression tools
  7. Another thing that you can do is manually configure tcp/ip properties under the alternate tab. Input ip, subnet mask, dns, and gateway info. Depending on your router, this could also allow you to lock your network down even tighter.
  8. Might be a stupid question, but will it work on Channel 3 or 4 like a VCR? On my Hauppage TV card, that is what I have to do for recording from my VCR into digital format b4 burning onto dvd. Hope that might spark an ideal 4 you
  9. Still using a :afro: 286 laptop for network trouble-shooting calls. Also use dial-up and Apache web browser for DOS when I can not get on my computer at home. Finally upgraded the DOS from Zenith 2.1 to MSDOS 6.22 and Windows 3.0 for some of the older games that I still own.
