Would Not Copy A File To C:\Program Files
mikep56 replied to mikep56's topic in Windows Post-Install Wizard (WPI)
Hi Zorphnog, I tried a test. I manually created an empty directory under C:\Program Files called app1. So the path to this directory is C:\Program Files\app1. I can manually copy a test file to it, and I can use AutoIt to copy a file to it. However when I use WPI to copy a file to it, it doesn't copy anything. And I know the syntax is OK because if I just remove Program Files from the path and make the target directory C:\app1, WPI will copy the file to this folder. I hope that this clears things up. Regards, Mike -

Hi Zorphnog, Yeah the folder is already present when I try to copy the file to it. Mike -
Would Not Copy A File To C:\Program Files

Hi Kelsenellenelvian, I can post the command tomorrow, because I am at work now. However 1 thing forgot to mention is that I am testing this out in a virtual machine, not a real one. I didn't think that this would make a difference, but who knows. If I remember correctly the command was FILECOPY %WPIPATH%\Install\Folder1\appname.exe C:\Program Files\Folder2. I don't remember about quotes, but like I said, the syntax has to be correct because if I change the target directory to be out of C:\Program Files, it correctly copies the file. Regards, Mike -
Hi All, I have been using WPI for a few months and feel really comfortable with it at this time. I ran into a snag recently that has me stumped. I want to use the FILECOPY command to copy a file from the Install directory on my CD to a directory under C:\Program Files. There are no attribute restrictions in place, yet WPI won't copy the file. I know that my syntax is correct because if I just change the directory to a place other than C:\Program Files, it works fine. I was also able to use AutoIt to copy the file to the directory under C:\Program Files, so I am pretty confident that it is not a system restriction issue, but a WPI issue. I tried looking in the manual, but could not find anything about the FILECOPY command, even though it seems self explanatory. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Mike

Hi Beats, OK. As Meat Loaf once sang, 2 out of 3 ain't bad. Now, if I chose to setup nLite to do a quick format all the time, if it went to quick format a new HD, would it be able to determine that it needs to do a full format without user intervention? And just to clarify for myself, is it true that you cannot do a quick format on a new HD that hasn't been formatted yet? Lastly, how would I go about setting up so I have the option to do a full or quick format? I guess a single click for all that automation is still pretty good. Thanks for your quick response Beats. Regards, Mike

Hi All, I have been using nLite for about 6 months now, so I am pretty comfortable with it. I have 5 computers in my house that are always being upgraded, replaced, etc. (with a 6 year old and a 4 year old, well you can understand!). When I use nLite on a newly purchased HD, obviously I need to do a full format before installing any SW. But when doing a re-install of Windows XP, I choose a quick format. So I have 3 questions: 1) Is it possible for nLite to do a full format unattended, where I don't have to select the partition to format and the file system to format to? I always use NTFS, and almost all of my PCs have only 1 HD. 1A) If this is possible, would having multiple HDs in the system cause a problem, or can nLite select the master drive on IDE0? 2) Is it possible for nLite to detect if the HD is formatted, and if so, to do a quick format instead of a full format? If these scenarios are possible, then I would only need to boot with my nLite CD, and it would automatically select whether to do a full format or a quick format, depending on the condition of the HD. Thanks for a great application and for any responses. Mike

Hi ripken204 and puntoMX, Update: After downloading and installing the latest drivers from the nVidia website, still no TV Out. I had done a quick RTFM and found no pertinent information on this, so I decided to try the manual again, paying a little more attention to the details. And what the f#@% do I find in small letters at the bottom of the page?!?!? A little blurb stating that either the VGA or SVideo can be used at a time, but not both. So powering down and rebooting activates the Svideo out and de-activates the VGA. Conversely powering down and removing the SVideo activates the VGA. Let the buyer beware!! Thanks to you guys for the help, and keep on learning!! Regards, Mike

Hi ripken204, I do not get the exact screen that you show. The dropdown is not available, so I cannot select display 1 or 2. I haven't DLed the new drivers yet, so that is next on the list. It appears to me that the SVideo-TV connection is not being sensed. Like I said, the cable is tested to be good, so hopefully it is just a software/driver issue. I will post back when I have some more info. Mike

To ripken204 and puntoMX, Thanks for the quick responses. I will try to use these suggestions tonite when I get home, and report back when I have some results. Time crunch and that sort of thing. Thanks again for the quick responses. Mike

Hi All, I bought the Biostar TForce TF7050-M2 mobo specifically for it's TV-OUT capability for use in a HTPC. All is well except that I cannot get the TV-OUT to function. I have a TV with the SVIDEO connector on it, and when I run the 'TV Setup Wizard' and press the 'Preview' button, I get nothing on the TV. The cable is checked out good, the SVIDEO on the TV is good, and I loaded all the drivers from the manufacturer's CD. I figure that the drivers on this CD should be good enough to get the video onto the TV. The spec sheet for the mobo says 'Fully support HDMI function under Windows Vista', and 'OS support Win 2K, XP, XP64, Vista, and Vista 64. I am running XP Pro with 512 MB RAM, 500 GB HD, and an AMD AM2 proc. Although it doesn't specifically state it, is it possible that the TV-OUT function is only supported in Vista? As is normal with mobo websites, good info is hard to find. They had one blurb about turning power off, connecting the TV and rebooting, but I am sure that I did this and it didn't work. All functions are OK except no TV-OUT. Any ideas from the wizards would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike

Hi Kel, I finally got a chance to try out the NCAB program that you told me about 2 weeks ago. I was having no luck silently installing Nero 6 Ultra with all of its updates. NCAB worked like a dream, and so easy... a caveman can do it. Thanks for some killer software, and keep up the good work. Regards, Mike

Hi Beady, I had the exact same problem with a system that I just built. I installed the HD, optical drive, and card readers, and my boot drive ended up being H:. There were several suggestions as what to do, but in the end I just disconnected the card readers, did a quick format, which took less than 1 minute, and did a reinstall of XP Pro (unattended, of course). Less than 20 minutes my system was back as it was supposed to be. Sorry that it isn't the answer you were looking for, but this is the way to go. Regards, Mike

Hi All, To finally put this subject to bed, this weekend I did a quick reformat of the HD, which took about 20 seconds to perform, and then a reinstallation of XP Pro without the card readers connected. I will reconnect the card readers later this week after I put in a new DVD burner that I bought for this PC. XP Pro is now back onto the C drive, and all is good. Thanks for all the help from all the contributors of this forum Regards, Mike

Hi All, To puntoMX, Yeah, I was thinking that I would do exactly that. No need to wait until some dumb program wants to run off the C:\ only. To gosh, Yes, my CD is XP Pro with SP2 slipstreamed. To Mijzelf, I use a USB stick quite often, so I will not be using this method, but thanks anyway for the info. To Ponch, Yeah, after a quick format, I will disconnect the readers and install Windows XP. Then I will reconnect the readers. Thanks to all for your responses. Mike

Hi uid0, Yeah, I didn't think that I would have any problems running any SW in this configuration. I just thought for aesthetic reasons I could have the boot device c:. But the 500GB drive takes 2 hours to format, so I guess I'll pass until I come across a program that doesn't like running off of the h: drive. Thanks again uid0. Regards, Mike

Hi All, I have just built a new system using a BIOSTAR TForce TF7050-M2 AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 7050PV HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard, a 500GB SATA HD, a Silverstone ML01 HTPC case, and my UA Windows XP Pro cd. The ML01 has a 26 in 1 card reader built in. The UA Windows install went without a hitch. But when I went to the device manager, the HD was h:, and the various readers were c: - g:. Will having the boot drive as h: affect any program operation, and if so, is there any way to re-enumerate the drives so that c: is the HD and the readers come after without having to do an install again? If I need to do an install again, I would think that I would need to do it without the readers connected, then after Windows is loaded, connect the readers and let Windows find them. Does this make sense? Thanks for any help that i can get. Mike

To puntoMX, nmX.Memnoch, and bonestonne, Thanks for the quick responses and info. I just want to use this PC as an 'experimental' unit; not my main PC. But I think I can afford $15 to upgrade the processor. Thanks again. Regards, Mike

Hi Kel, Thanks for the help. I will DL NCAB and try it this week. Really cramped for time! Again, thanks for an awesome program in WPI. Regards, Mike

Hi All, First off let me say that this is an awesome forum and kicks @ss. I have an old PC that was picked up for $0. You know, one man's junk is another man's treasure, well just call me Fred G. Sanford. Anyway this PC has a socket 370 Intel mobo with a Whitney chipset and a Celeron 333 processor. I tried swapping out the processor with a celeron 800 and then with a PIII 800, both of which I am pretty sure are good. However neither would POST, so I placed the original processor back in the socket. Any idea why no POST with either processor, short of having 2 bad procs? Is the Whitney specific to the type of socket 370 processor that it can run? Thanks for any help I can get. Mike

Hi All, First off let me say that this is an awesome board for an awesome application! I have spent several weeks learning how to enter and install programs in WPI, and it kicks @ss! My question is in 2 parts: 1) I want to install Nero 6 Ultra Edition and I've seen that the command line to install is Nero.msi with various switches. When I look at the Nero 6 CD, there is a setup.exe in the root of the CD, but no .msi files. I ran USSF on the setup.exe file and it responded with the message about being a C++ file and couldn't find any switches. I am pretty sure that this is the right file to run because the screen that pops up after you run the setup.exe is the same screen that the autorun.inf pops up after inserting the CD. Is this the correct file? I searched the entire CD for a Nero.msi file, with all the nested directories, to no avail. 2) There are about 6 .exe files that can be downloaded from the Ahead site that updates Nero 6 Ultra to 6.6 Ultra. These are setup.exe files, so is it safe to assume that I just need to run these setup.exe files after the Nero 6 Ultra installation to have Nero 6.6 Ultra? Again let me say thanks for a killer app and keep up the good work! Mike
